OEM TouchWiz and TouchWiz EZ Apks - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I went on a system app deleting binge and caused the task killer and memory "buttons" to disappear from left button/single press. I still get the recent apps listing, but no kill all and memory buttons at bottom.
The most likely candidates for having caused this I suppose are the two TouchWiz things I deleted.
If someone could post or point to where those could be downloaded, I would appreciate it.
Alternate explanations and remedies would be appreciated as well.
TIA!

Download a stock rom, unzip it, take what you want.

Thanks. I wound up reinstalling my rom it was so quick. I tried extracting things from .img files, but couldn't make it go on my windoze box. By that time I had expended enough effort to just reinstall.

APK Building Block

Will make this quick for everyone.
- This is solely for the purpose of expanding ones expertise in dealing with APK's within its roots.
- This is NOT for the purpose of taking away from the Developers of any APK's whether it be third party, free or even paid and should be used with common sense.
- I am aware that there are lots of stuff floating around on the internet about apktools. However, I have not seen anything within the home of our One SV and so thought I would share it.
- In addition there are many techniques as well as programs which can be used for such purposes as deemed by the individual using such tools, however, as for right now, this is my preferred method as I like to keep it 'old school' even though its the new age .
- As well, I can not recall the names of those which should be made known on here for their work, and dedication to making this possible by appropriately giving them the thanks which they deserve.
- If names arise down the road just let me know and it can be fixed (simple enough).
- AND IN CASE YA DIDN'T GET IT ..... I do not take credit for this work. I am merely piecing the materials together and sharing it all in one bundle within a zip file. Just unzip the file and within the apktool folder you will find a .txt file named instructions. The instructions are so basic my daughter could walk you through it.
- So, without further a due.. I present apktool package. <--- click me
EDIT:
- Insure that you have installed Android SDK
- Insure that you have installed Java JDK (JRE is included with the latest JDK version. It is not needed to install both separately.
And if batch files do not work when running them through command then insure you give CMD administrative rights.
To run one of the many batch files just bring up the command as promptly needed then type out the name of that batch file ending it with its extension .bat and it will run its course. If the command fails to run then insure that you are within apktool folder directory.
Hmm, well, if I wasn't limited for ten posts (which is understandable as to why) I would share an apktool which can be used on an android device vice needing a computer. Will have to come back to this later.

[Q] Visual Land Prestige 7L Root / Rom (a10)

Hello,
First post, and I know you shouldn't just go straight to questions. I've searched and read and read and read. So, here is my question(s)...
I bought the VL Prestige 7L for my son. He's 3, and it was less than $80. This is much better than having him break my iPad or my wife's Kindle Fire. I know it is a bit of a sub-spec tablet, but it will be perfect for him. My goal is to clean it up, restrict what he can do, and set it up with games / movies for him.
So:
1. Remove extra stuff / apps
2. Add Google Play market
3. Setup User accounts and customize interface
Reading this, and a few other sites, I've learned that this tablet is based on the Allwinner A10. Now the question is what to do with that information. It seems I have options, and I don't know why I would choose 1 over the other. Here is what I've found:
Option 1: Use LiveSuit to install a custom img on the tablet. But what img to use?
Option 2: Use a market place script. But there isn't a JB version that I've found so far.
Option 3: Install CyanogenMod 10. However, the 7L isn't listed in the un/supported tablets, so I don't know if it will work or if I need the legacy drivers, etc.
Any thoughts, recommendations, other options I may have missed?
Thanks in advanced for any help and insight you offer.
Best,
Brad
Anyone?
No thoughts, advice, words of encouragement?
Unless I hear some sage advice before tomorrow, my plan is to attempt CyanogenMod with legacy drivers, and then drive to WalMart and buy a new tablet to replace the brick that I create.
If nothing else, I'll document my disaster for everyone else to learn from!

Subbed to hear the outcome. I have the Pro 7D and am looking to pretty much do the same thing you are. I will tell you that any apps you install will go to the 512MB of memory and not the 8GB of storage. You will need to go into Settings>Apps and move them to the "SD Card" (there term for the storage). An external SD Card will show up under the Storage heading in the settings as SD Card, The built in storage will show as NAND Flash.
Good luck. Looking forward to hearing how it turns out.
Outcome... part 1
Ok... after digging around a lot more, here is what I did...
I used LiveSuit 1.07
Installed this image: www dot tabletroms dot com /forums /prestige-7l /6294-jellybean-4-1-1-rabid-rom-7l-full-root-google-play-w-voice.html
Following this instructions: www dot topnotchtablets dot com /A10Firmware
Everything loaded and boots. I'm having an issue with the touch drivers (so basically I can't use the tablet).
More to come later.
(apparently I can't post links, so you'll have to deal with the words)
Everything seems to be working, except the most important part... the touch functionality.
The ROM loads, the Vol buttons work, the Power button works, the will boot into recovery mode correctly, connects via USB...
... just no touch.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Sincerly,

Deadly Downloads

I've noticed on several occasions that download sites recommended by a small percentage of folks here are literally "crawling with viral fecal matter disguised by the download file in most sinister fashions, the most popular is to catch a user who is not paying close and I mean very close attention to what is happening not only when you install the program but also when you un-install it. Case in point[still cleaning up from it]: Yesterday my partner used my laptop to get Odin for a rooting project. I found what I thought was the latest version, said to be the latest from this site:
odindownload.com/downloads/Odin-V3.10.6.exe
This file installs nearly a dozen bogus files on your computer and never installs Odin. I have included a partial list of the companies participating in this bit of ugliness below:
Guardian
Vuuc
Doctor PC
Cinema Plus
trovi.com
AND the EVER notorious PC CLEANER!!! These programs resist the uninstall, hide files in the prefetch folder and in the local appdata folder to reinstall themselves. I hope this FYI helps you avoid an hours long cleanup. My antivirus software caught 20 win32 viruses in the space of an hour while we were trying to install the Odin software. Be advised!!!!
thanks buddy.

Once you've been infected there is no reliable way to fully remove everything even if your AV says your system is clean, they obviously hide some backdoors enabling it to come back later. I mean 20 infections, damn, consider that install toast. Wipe the disk and install fresh. Really have to be careful with what you're installing...
you might not be aware of windows software & network firewall called comodo, which probably would've caught a lot of these if you use it in 'paranoid' mode
basically it will ask you before something is allowed to happen with unknown/ unprofiled exe', once vetted you can put the exe into a class (for behaviour rules applicable to a group of apps), or define behaviour specific to the app in question- comodo would follow these rules automatically - not dissimilar to iptables for network apps
the rules are 'ask always', 'allow' and 'block', while you can remember any specific choices, or have them apply for this exe run only - the actions to which rules can apply are in my attached screenshots
when i run the file at that link, it catches it as unknown, then allows me to run it in an isolated 'sandbox' - doing so results in a crash of the app, which is never a good sign; if i remember next time i'm on my other machine i'll let it get a bit further on in a vm and see what methods it uses to attempt to persist itself
i pretty much dont use on-access virus scanners anymore, rather, i use comodo in paranoid mode - i still use standalone sophos and avg instances occasionally, that i run before i do a backup

What happened after I deleted .apks in /system/app ?

Hello all,
I fell into a huge problem. I use a Nexus 5 16 GB variant with all sorts of games I can put inside of. Now I ran out of storage.
My smart ass told me search for culprits and I was ruthless on files as small as 50 MBs. . Now, then I saw a treasure trove of space which could be freed and that was in #/system/app. I deleted almost all of them and left behind some like Bluetooth.apk and NFC et al.
Now two things happened
1) I can no longer use the 'Explore Storage' in the Other category of Storage found i Settings app. It would say, Settings has Crashed.
2) I can no longer sync my contacts to Google as After asking to add account, it just asks again. Earlier I seamlessly used that feature.
I don't know what's broken more.
Please someone help.
Much thanks in advance.
Have you tried a full reset? Kinda of a risk... But worth it at times. My old phone I could delete all the system apps, then reset it and they'd all pop back up.

I have the ROM with me. Flashing that will ( or might) restore every functionality. But the point is why it did happen and unbreak the broken without flashing.
Why would you think that deleting anything from a system folder is a good idea...?
Just flash the system.img again. That should restore at least a working system, though I'd guess that you'll have to do some manual rework to restore lost apps. Your data should still be intact.
Just guessing, to be honest. I'm still astonished that you did this...
Have you considered an OTG USB stick? The attached photo shows an additional 128GB of storage on the tip of my little finger. I can post the links if anyone is interested.

I don't know why I did that. Maybe because I saw those apks lying there and thought to myself, what are they doing here. I deleted all of them.
The next part is more important now. I installed the same ROM on the same phone using multirom and then copied the whole system/app folder to my other ROMs broken app folder. And this helped remove the broken Settings functionality. But the Contacts functionality is still broken. Lastly I will flash the system image if I could not find the reason behind this. Thanks sir for the help.

Suddenly lost SD access - S7

Literally two days ago I was playing tunes from my SD. Yesterday "access denied" - effectively the SD ceased to exist. In fact, the data is still there when looking through MTP and, of course, mounted on my Linux machine. Why did this fail overnight???
The one possible gotcha is this is an ex-rooted machine. It lost route when I made the mistake of letting SU update its binary. That was a month(?) ago and the phone's been 100% solid (root aside) until two days ago.
Obviously I now feel some pressure to re-root and obviously the SD will be at least feet away from the S7 while doing the go to stock to root process.
If there's a way to regain r/w access (while not rooted) in the meantime...?
I'd try backing up the MicroSD card to the PC, delete/recreate primary partition > formatting it and testing it back in the phone first, if it's working, copy your files back to it
I only wish. The data's there via MTP, so it's readable through that channel, and the SD's readable on my Linux machine.
The problem is why did read/write permission stop working, while MTP still accesses the data. PowerAmp, for example, can't find the SD and neither can Player Pro. I also tried to read the data with FX - access denied.
The only thing I can think of is either an app update or one installation (app to control a GoPro clone) did something ugly. But that seems, to me, to be "reaching for it".
Meh... the phone is beginning to show other bad habits. Rather than work around the problems, I re-flashed to stock firmware, and will go back to root from there.

It's only readable on your Linux machine, you can't copy from it?

Readable - just copied some music folders to my linux box. (now playing Trauma (remix by Workals) by N'to - electrominimal - now about four years old but still works - 3M+ views on YT)
Since the phone seemed to be generally less than 100% stable, I took it back to stock and will re-root it to Nougat.
My guess is something (an update?) flipped permissions.
I've moved to Nougat. When the phone is back to the way I want it, I'll try rooting. There's no explanation for what went sour, but it's moot now.
So long and thanks for the fish!
I rechecked the SD with H2TestW (v. cool SD tester for Windoze) and... flunk. I've captured the contents and they seem to be intact. But there's now no doubt the SD is toast. So this did begin with SD failure. The good news is I moved to rooted Nougat as a result. I can live with that.
