Alliance ROM & Knox Question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

You'll have to forgive me as I am fairly new to rooting and flashing custom roms but I have a possibly ignorant question. I recently purchased an already rooted verizon S III with CM 10.2 off Swappa and would like to flash the Alliance rom build 23 and was wondering if custom roms such as the Alliance rom come with anything Knox related in the rom? From what I have read I want to avoid anything with knox or 4.3 OTA related like the plague. Am I safe from any of the issues related to this if I install Alliance or another custom rom? Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks

You are safe with flashing any custom rom except the ones that say "locked bootloader only". Every 4.3 TouchWiz rom is deknoxed and the bootloader is removed. Stay away from the stock 4.3 or 4.4 builds and you'll be fine.

Awesome, your thanks meter just went up sir. Flashed the Alliance Rom and using the KT kernel and loving it so far. Gotta thank the Alliance team also, mad props to all that made it possible. Still a lot of exploring to do and I'm sure I'll have more questions but mad props to XDA too for being the go to place for answers and help.

[Q] I have not yet accepted the OTA on my rooted 4.1.2. What should I do next?

I have a rooted SCH-I535 running stock 4.1.2. I am still getting OTA update notices every five minutes and it is time to move on to 4.3. What has has been your experience out there? My goals are:
1) to keep root, and
2) run 4.3 stock and have the option to play around with 4.4 ROMs.
Should I OTA to 4.3 then root? From what I have read, it may not be possible to flash custom ROM's this way. Can I get 4.3 ROMs and 4.4 ROMs another way? What is the best method from a rooted 4.1.2?
Thanks from an noob.

If you take the OTA 4.3 update your boot loader will be locked and you will not be able to do anything that you said. If you have Titanium Pro use it to freeze "SDM 1.0" that will stop the update nags. If you want to go to 4. 3 you will find a rooted, stock 4.3 rom with an unlocked boot loader developed and posted by "Old&Slow" at this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895

Huge thanks for the SDM freeze tip. That was my primary nuisance. It worked perfectly.I followed the link you provided. The ROM seems to be a bit buggy. Are a lot of you staying with 4.1.2? I like the idea of cloud printing and a few other updates, but I don't know if I want to risk my flash going off every time my phone rings. Can anyone recommend a good 4.4 ROM that can be flashed from my current state?
In general, the 4.4 ROM's are going to be a little more "buggy" when compared to a custom TW 4.3 ROM. From my understanding of this it's due to the devs being able to use the official OTA as a base and just customize it. I've ran both and prefer the custom TW 4.3 ROMs. To each their own however.
If you want to stay as close as OTA as possible, scrosler has posted a 4.3 ROM on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III Android Development thread. It's titled, "[ROM][1/27/14] - Stock Rooted Knoxless - VRUCML1 - Android 4.3 - Stay Classy XDA!". I'd link you but don't have that ability yet on the forum.

Hey just you know 4.4 ROMS do not use the OTA as a base. The OTA is 4.3 first of all. 2nd its Touchwiz. 4.4 ROMs are AOSP only. Not Touchwiz. Now 4.4 ROMs just like any AOSP ROM use the Stock AOSP source code from Google as a Base (stock AOSP like on a Nexus) and then merge in device specific proprietary drivers after. They are buggy at first especially the modem/radio because we have to reverse engineer those proprietary drivers from Samsung to work on AOSP. Blame Samsung for not releasing source code for the modem.

That's what I meant. Sorry, wasn't clear in my post. I wasn't saying 4.4 ROMs use the OTA. I understand how they are built on AOSP. I was trying to say 4.3 ROMs have less problems (usually) because the devs have the OTAs to work with. For the most part anyway (I've read about the kernel problems on VZ 4.3). Thanks for clarifying.

This is an easy upgrade (and one I did, going from a 4.1.2 ROM called BoneStock 3.4 to MOAR 7.1 and then to my current TW4.3 ROM, CleanROM 8.0). Its pretty similar to any other ROM you have flashed. You just need to make sure you flash a ML1 modem (which it appears you have already done), then flashing the new ROM.
There are a number of good TW 4.3 ROMs found on the Verizon Galaxy S III Android Development thread, and while I have experience with Mother of All ROMS aka MOAR (recently updated to v8.0) and CleanROM, but each phone is different so what works best on mine (or even what has the features you value most) may differ for you. Best to research each of the TW 4.3 ROMs by reading the specific developer threads and even asking questions once you have researched. The developers and the community is very helpful once you have done your own homework. Pay attention to what the developer instructs in the OP of each thread, as most of any question have about how to install are usually answered in the OP.
The good news... these ROMs are getting rock solid... pretty problem free and smooth. Good luck and enjoy the new ROM!
UPDATE: one suggestion... you may want to update whatever Recovery you are using. I do know going to a 4.4 ROM requires the latest TWRP (the recovery I favor) to 2.6.3.1 which I am pretty sure is the latest version. It may not be required for 4.3, but seems a good idea none the less. You will also note that your files will then be stored in a different place (I am not technical enough to explain this... so do some research on that). This will make a difference when you back up important files (pictures, messages etc) and also when you do the nandroids. And always, always make nandroids!

[Q] Verizon GS3 4.3 - Questions on unlocking bootloader and installing ROM

Ok, so, like the title says, I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 with 4.3 (Firmware VRUCML1). I already rooted it. And after trying to install a custom recovery without unlocking the bootloader, I had to use Odin to return to stock. And then, I bricked it after trying something else.
So my question is, what are the proper steps I should take (after rooting, since I already did that), to installing a ROM?
Get to stock than download safestrap and use safestrap to make a rom slot. Than you can install a TouchWiz 4.3 custom rom. Unfortunately if you are on stock 4.3 than that is your only option as you can not unlock the bootloader.

Like ImUnderTheBed said, safestrap and 4.3 TW ROMs are your only option. Everything you need is pretty much covered in the OPs of these two threads:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639337
Ahhh ok, so basically, find the safestrap apk for my phone, then I can just install a tw rom. is there a certain version of safestrap that works? Or just safestrap in general?
Also, so, since you said only TW roms, I'm assuming that roms like AISP and MIUI are out of the question. Or just Kit Kat roms in general?

Couldn't even be bothered to read the first few posts of the Safestrap thread?
You can run AOSP roms like CM and Omni, but nothing based on Lollipop

If they are on a locked bootloader no custom roms can be installed at all

VZW S3 with 4.1.2 - latest version of Android I can flash?

Apologize if this has been answered, I quickly looked through the relevant sections and stickies and came away confused.
I currently have a Verizon S3 that has an unlocked bootloader and is still on 4.1.2 (some debloated stock ROM). I'd like to update it to a newer version of Android, but do not want to get rid of the unlocked bootloader. From what i've read, that means I cannot flash any TW 4.4 ROMs.
I'm confused as to whether I can flash any of the following:
- a TW 4.3 ROM, e.g., http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591895
- an AOSP 4.4 ROM, e.g., http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2400577
I have no interest in upgrading to lollipop fwiw
Thanks!
EDIT: thanks a lot, installed the TW 4.3 ROM with no issues

Heh I cracked the screen on it when 4.3 was still a dream, so I gave it to my parents to use wifi-only. For their use (basically chromecast and traveling abroad) 4.1.2 sufficed, but I thought some sort of updated OS would be nice from a security perspective.
