Alright so I have the phone in the title and I have been researching how to root the One X for 6 months or so just lurking many different forums and I have been having trouble finding a working guide to root my phone, My phone is on 3.18 software and Android version of 4.1.1
The newest threads I see about rooting my phone are from 2013 and then I found this thread that was updated back in May of this year, but I am very new to the whole scene of rooting and such. I have backed up all of the files from my phone that I need, but I am still having trouble figuring out what files and guide I should follow for my product as to avoid bricking my device. Any help is greatly appreciated! For the past half year I have been busy trying to understand more about rooting to possibly aid in learning how to root, such as what S-off is and why it's recommended to do and what unlocking the bootloader does/why it's important(still not quite sure) I've just had such trouble and late nights finding an up to date specific guide for my device.
Just go to the guide thread in my signature, I have instructions there on how to get SuperCID so you can unlock your bootloader.

Thank you so much! Just a question, so even though my phone is a One X (not XL) will the guide still work for it? Just making sure.
Your phone is the One XL, at&t just marketed it as the One X for some stupid reason.

Hi. I just got a new phone so I no longer have a need for my lg stylo 4 plus so i thought "why not experiment". How can I safely root this phone? I've heard that a lot of rooting tools are spyware and im not really sure what I should do. Thanks for the help in advance!

First, you need to establish whether or not the bootloader is locked on the device, if it is, you can't flash the device in order to root it. If it is locked, your only options are to try all of the one-click universal rooting apps and PC programs and hope that one of them has an exploit that works on your device.
If it is unlocked and you can get a copy of the stock firmware for your specific device model number, you can try extracting the boot.img from your stock firmware then try the Magisk rooting method. Do a search for how to use Magisk to create a patched boot.img and how to use it to root a device, then do some searches to learn how to flash the patched boot.img using your device's compatible flash tool.

If you have a locked bootloader or if there is not a TWRP for your model number, the only options that you have are programs on PC and android apps that are used to root devices, programs and apps like the ones that you said you tried already. Try all of them, as many of them that you can find. Maybe one of them will work for you, if not, you are out of luck.

If these instructions work to unlock your bootloader, and, you can find the stock firmware containing the boot image for your device, you can try fastboot flashing a Magisk patched boot.img. Instructions here. YMMV
Is there a way to root without a computer? If not what is the easiest root method? I used to root phones all the time but recently I have been getting the newest phones so there's no devolpment (and it was Samsung lol). I have a work computer but it's pretty locked down on what I can and can't download. Thanks in advance!
AFAIK, you can't root without a computer.
Download whatever you need on your phone, tools and stuff, get to that work computer and copy all of it there, root the phone and delete afterwards.

Get an old cheap laptop.
You want a computer to root.
