Odexed or deodexed? - General Questions and Answers

How do I know if I am odexed or deodexed? I have a sprint note 3 4. 4. 2

Get Root Browser and look in /system/app. If you see any .odex files then you are odexed. If not you are deodexed.

what is the difference?

Odexed is a little faster. The data for the app is stored in a .odex file. You cannot modify the system though. Deodexed is where the odex file is translated in a file called classes.dex and that is stored within the apk. Deodexed roms are fully customizable and you can mod the system much easier.

How to go back to defaults but stay rooted...

I want to go back to the ORIGINAL DEFAULT most up to date 2.1 version but stay rooted, is this possible?
I am on Fresh 0.3
Thanks!

Stock (1.32.651.6) with root. Deodex and odex available (06/10/2010)
What does deodex and odex mean?
This is the correct file I am looking for right?
By TrevE from the DamageControl ROM post:
Deodex basically takes the odex file and stuffs it into the apk as a classes.dex. First boot it dissembles the file into /dalvik-cache (i believe). Now there is basically 2 copies of the odex, one in the apk one in cache. This makes it "portable". This allows modders to work on the apks & easily change stuff. If you want themes or stuff like lockscreen fixes you MUST use Deodex.
Odex is how things come stock. It takes up less room but making modifications or taking apks from other roms is hard. You cannot use themes with this version!!

[Q] Is a partially deodexed phone okay?

I'm using xUltimate to deodex the files on my rooted Motorola I1 but I'm getting errors with a few of the system apps(Phone, CameraMoto, etc.). Is it safe to copy to my phone just the successfully deodexed apks and let be the few odexed apps? Or does everything on my phone need to be either odexed or deodexed for the phone to run?
I'm also very interested to the answer to this...
Well, it took a few failed reboots, but as of now my phone seems to be working while only partially deodexed. It's fully booted and I can make a phone call - haven't tested anything else. Everything in /system/framework is deodexed, but there are still a few apks in /system/apps that are not.
The output from the failed reboots seemed to indicate that at least one of the still-odexed apk files needed particular odex files in /system/framework and couldn't find them, raising an unhandled exception(I'd deleted all the .odex files from /system/framework once I'd copied over the deodexed versions). I copied back the odex files the apk needed(just the .odex files, not the originial .jar or .apk files) to /system/framework and the phone booted successfully.
So right now my /system/app has a mixture of odexed and deodexed files; my /system/framework has only deodexed jars but also has a few of the original odex files. Not sure if the phone would be okay with a mixture of odexed and deodexed files in /system/framework, especially with regard to certain critical jars. I seem to recall, however, attempting to put a single deodexed file(services.jar) onto a different phone(HTC Incredible) and not getting good results.
As long as the framework files are odexed, both deodexed and odexed apps in /system/app will work.
If the framework is deodexed, all /system/apps has to be deodexed, if not, the apps will be disabled on boot and won't show up in launcher (they won't get deleted). The device won't boot if for example the settings app gets disabled..
The framework cannot be deodexed partially.
Thanks Fr4gg0r, that makes sense and jibes with what I found. So far I've been able to manually deodex some of the /system/apps that xUltimate couldn't deodex itself, so I may not need to run with a partially deodexed phone, anyways.

Won't work because he's using a odexed Rom whereas the Mods only work in a deodexed Rom
Sounds silly but what if he just delete SystemUI.apk and SystemUI.odex, services.jar and services.odex files then flash the mentioned mod, will it be OK???
tbh, I didn't test this method, although it works in some other mods!!!

Sorry I've not understood. Do you have a way to add toggle on LSZ odex stock rom? If it works, can you write a little guide to do it, please?
updated instructions and changed the translator http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38715726&postcount=14
Thanks a lot Klementiy. I went through odexer.sh, and it seems so simple now.
I can confirm that this works.. If someone want the CWM package for Odexed LSZ, I can post it here.

Instructions on how to make Odex:
1. For First you need to open an archive with modifications and see what sort of files
2. Look on your phone or at this address https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B...ring&pli=1&docId=0B_tjIX7pV_liQjR3VGhoY0VMSWM which of these files have a second file Odex
3. Install this archiver https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.zdevs.zarchiver ZArchiver.apk: http://yadi.sk/d/qhsL2d8n31-w8 and in the settings set compression "uncompressed"
4. From the archive with modifications extract the Deodex files for which you want to create files Odex
5. With an archiver to open our tool odexer_4_update_internal.zip: http://yadi.sk/d/ZLLm-1Qw2uNMF and on the way tmp / MOD add the Deodex file to the appropriate folder for which you want to make a file Odex
6. Exit from the archiver, go to CWM and install the resulting archive
7. After application of the archive in the internal memory card appears folder odexer, in which be necessary apk and odex and which is necessary to put a hands in system, framework and preload, because when they wrote the script, then the preload section has not yet been activated by the system
... shorter than anyone should, he will understand, good luck !

Instructions for installing mods for Odex-firmware:
1. Extract all apk and jar files from the archive for modding
2. Install this archiver ZArchiver: http://yadi.sk/d/gkKGRw3e3_lID and in his settings select the compression method "No compression"
3. With an archiver ZArchiver open archive odexer_4_update_internal.zip: http://yadi.sk/d/lkaVBHxc3_kkG and on the way: tmp/MOD to the appropriate folders to throw the files with modifications, You can throw in any number of
4. Exit from the archiver, go to CWM and install the resulting archive
5. After running the script on the internal memory card appears folder odexer with the new apk and odex files, which must be manually placed in folders on the device, do not forget to set the permissions and ownership are the same as in the original file
CAUTION:
1. This script was created when not yet used section preload, so the script does not know section preload, ready archives use only for sections system/app and system/framework, for working with the section preload/symlink/system/app use only hands
2. If you move any files to the section preload, do not forget to make sure that the system/app to these files have the proper labels symlink, if the symlink is missing, it can easily be created by using Root Explorer: http://yadi.sk/d/dWKFeyRX3_lEh
3. After all the manipulations with the replacement files do not forget to delete the folder: data/dalvik-cache and reboot the device

this will never work, cause you need the framework jar files completely odexed or deodexed - no mix possible (except some google or third party stuff also working as deodexed in an odexed version)...whereas it is no prob to have a mixture in apps with odexed and deodexed

Odex files.

I have a question...
Can i delete odex files manually in /system/app and /system/framework without consequencies ?
Enzo.
No you can't, they form part of the app. You'd have to deodex the ROM or replace the apps with their deodexed versions to remove the odex files without issues
Thanks !
Deodexed rom stock founded, i replace the odex files by the deodex versions.

[Help]Deodexing system/framework

I am using
Android lolipop 5.1
I am new to deodexing .and i have successfully have deodexer my system/app and system/priv-app
But when I tried to deodex my framework
I could only deodex some jar files because only some of them have odes in framework/arm
From my research I found out that test of odex are located in framework/arm/boot.oat
My question is then how will I extract these odex
And even if I extract and recompile these odex
The system will still contain boot.oat so it would neglect
The jars and still will use the odex files contained in boot.oat
So what I want
I want to deodex my framework
I want system to use classes.Dec from jar and not fromboot.oat
I want to modify android.policy.jar but the classes.dex of android.policy.jar is struct I. Boot.oat
Sory for long post
Thanks in advance! !
