I'm looking for a plain and simple SMS messaging app, paid or free that does not rely on servers up in cloud to perform its simple task — sending and receiving simple text messages and MMS. I'm not quite happy with the Hangouts app, and Google seem to have removed the Messaging app.
Hello SMS looked very good until I read the privacy policy. I'm not interested in passing any of my data over a third party server for a task as simple as sending texts.
Any other recommendations?

You can get the AOSP Messaging app by downloading an AOSP ROM and taking out the apk

Thanks. But I'd rather opt for a solution that is maintained and updated via Google Play.

Well then there are way too many and they aren't too hard to find.
Here's one that has an XDA thread:

Yup. Best SMS app I've tried so far and my current default.
Sliding SMS is also nice but there're some bugs that dev is still working on...
I'm using textra it seems like that's the one I always go back to. It has quick reply like the new iOS 8 and its fast and stable.

Textra is light, simple, and does everything you need it to do. Best app and very customizable notifications.

With this app, MMS can be received without switch data ON

QKSMS is by far the best texting app I have ever used, it was made by a dev on XDA and ever since early alpha it's been my daily driver. Simple UI, no over the top features, slick, quick and beautiful. https://plus.google.com/communities/113548623434189541823
I also recommend 8sms. It's based on oasp sms app with some extra features.

88 is good. So is Handcent.
You can try EvolveSMS too, i havent read the privacy policy, but its a damn good looking app
Highly recommend this SMS app

Well designed UI, works smoothly and it's FREE!
You have TextSecure for sms & mms. Really good & secure app. It's free, no ad.

When ever I seem to search good SMS apps on Google, I'm just getting stuff like WhatsApp, which isn't SMS.
I don't like hangouts being part of SMS.
I like Textra myself.
Handcent sms.
I don't use it myself.

You could try Facebook Messenger.
Go to settings in the app --> click SMS/MMS --> Activate to receive and send SMS
Maybe you like it, maybe you don't. I do like it a lot and I think it' worth trying out!
You can find the app in Google Play.
Android 4.1 JB Messaging SMS looks just like SMS did on the N4, down side is that MMS doesn't work in the app.
One of my favourite updates in KitKat is personally the hangouts texting integration. Much nicer interface.
I found a great app called evolve sms. It has a ton of customization options. Very fluent on my m8. No lag. It's much better than the default messaging app. You should check it out! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.klinker.android.evolve_sms

+1. However, this is all subjective. Kinda funny seeing yet ANOTHER thread about this.
I like hello SMS. Aesthetically very pleasing.
The only thing default is missing for me is a Quick Reply or popup. Tried Hello Sms, but I don't like hoe the popup disappears after 3 seconds. Evolve is beautiful, But I found it VERY laggy even after archiving. Textra is very functional, but aesthetically boring as hell. wish their was a facebook chat type sms messaging app with the same functionality. Thoughts?

I think it all depends on your taste. I like evolve because you can set it to no limit on mms and there's a bunch of themes for it. Funny I haven't experienced any lag on it. Hello sms is a good one as well.
HTC ONE M8?
The main thing missing from the stock messaging, as well as several of those mentioned is the ability to intercept and move messages to a private area. I have people I message that I don't want displayed in a general inbox. GoSMS Pro is what I've used though due to the ads recently, I'm reluctant to give my absolute backing.
Yes I'm aware that I can move messages after the fact but I wan't it done for me before people go creeping through them.

On stock messaging app I can move messages to a "secure" folder which is password protected and not shown on the general overview.

I haven't needed to use this in awhile, but private message box works with the stock messaging app and keeps messages private. You have to go to the dialer to even access the messages. It's really very secure.

I always use Textra but [email protected] I am loving this EvolveSMS app already. It's beautiful and very snappy (I feel like this is a word I haven't heard since the beginning of the Android platform back when Noah was the man on PhoneDog.com lol).
Hi everyone! I'm working a new Android messaging app, and to test my idea, I have a few questions for which I'd love to hear what you have to say.
Do you feel that you spend too much time on your messaging apps?
Are many of your conversations productive?
Would you like it if conversations were short and to the point? If so, with what kind of people would you want this (ie your friends, family, colleagues, etc...)?
Do you love the mute notifications feature on apps like Whatsapp?
I appreciate your time - feel free to PM me or reply on this thread. Thanks!
I would love you see a messaging and email app all in one. Like the same platform as the new Inbox. Its super smooth and convenient. If you could text too it would be perfect to me
Nexus 5 running Lollipop/ElementalX
A messaging app that lets you send files of any size or extension would be great.

Why would you wan't to clutter messaging & mailing

Any extension would be cool. The size is limited to whatever your service provider is set to and I dont think there's any getting around that.
Split to another message and reassemble at the other end..

I agree with this guy, I would love that. Simple/fast/clean app for SMS and email accounts (outlook/gmail etc)
I did the Nougat update, and was wondering the pros or cons of using a third party SMS app. I've used Handcent for very long, and more recently Textra, but I see the stock app is rather good and has many options.
Just looking for feedback, thanks in advance.
I use google messenger. Fast, simple. Can change chat colors.
I'm a big fan of Google Messenger and Yaata. I've always disliked Textra, and I can't stand that the stock client doesn't open links in a browser, but in a preview window.

Reading about both, and Google Messenger seems like a good option.
I use Android Messages. Google just changed the name of their messenger app. But I love it because it's fast easy to use and handles everything I need.

Just out of curiosity, does any 3rd party messaging app support texting over WiFi? I know the stock Samsung one does, but would something like Android Messenger or Textra work using T-Mobile? I never knew if this was an app-specific feature or if it was related to the network.

Some do, but as far as I know it's carrier dependent.
As to my original post, I still haven't decided on an app. Textra was real good on my old phone, so it's either it or Google Messages.
No one mentioned it but I've used Chomp for years. Texting over wifi works 90% of the time. Not sure why it doesn't work all the time but my wife uses the stock app while I use Chomp. Neither of us have any complaints.
Stock sms apk doesn't have schedule sms function. So which apk do you recommend for this function on oneplus? I tried few from play store and are horrible.
Is there any other app other than Textra? It does everything and the only app I use other then WhatsApp and that's mostly for friends out of the country and better group chats.
Can only agree, Textra is the only SMS message app worth using.

I have to admit, I've never tried anything after I started using Textra 4 or 5 years ago, just never thought of even looking I've been so happy with Textra.
Thank you for all opinion. I though about app that is only for schedule sms because I satisfied with stock message apk.
If you are using Textra do you uninstall or turn off stock sms apk?
In my opinion is pointless to have both application.

You can Also look to YAATA right here on xda. It is like Textra but a bit more secure as well as far more themeable.
