[Q] /sdcard not accesable anymore - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi together,
earlier I wanted to finally give the L-Preview a shot so I downloaded it and installed it as it was mentioned in the thread's instructions. Everything was fine until I was forced to reinstall it because Wifi kept getting stuck at switching (which didn't fix itself after a reboot) and some other things. So I did everything again like I did before but after I booted it up again and set up everything I noticed that in ES-File manager I couldn't access my sdcard directory. So I booted back into my recovery and saw that even there my usual sdcard directory was nearly gone except for a few folders (0, clockwordmod, legacy, obb and TWRP) which I couldn't see in ES-File explorer before. Because I was a little confused (and angry because I never had something like this happening) I just rebooted my device and connected it to my pc to see what I can access from there. But it was the same result like with the manager, there were no folders at all . So I went back into my recovery and just looked a bit around and after a while I found out that the whole /sdcard files just moved to the "0" folder that is inside the "old" sdcard-directory. And this is kind of where I am at right now not knowing what to do to get everything back to normal. I hope there is a way I can recover all of my files or at least a way that I can move them to my pc (had a few backups on there that I was too lazy to move which I do regret now...). If there is someone who understood my post and knows a solution to my problem please help me! I am actually quite lost right now because I can't even use Whatsapp without loosing all of my messages
I am sorry that I can't give you any pictures of my phones status but I don't know how I could do a screenshot/video in TWRP :/
Edit: I found an older device of myself with which I was able to take some pictures (has very bad quality because it has a little crack in the camera)
On InternerSpeicherSeite1 you can see that on my pc it shows that storage is used up but on InternerSpeicherSeite2 you can see that it is empty if I open it.
In ES you can see that there is this /legacy instead of /sdcard.
In TWRP1 you can see that the whole /scard directory is nearly empty.
In TWRP2 is the /sdcard direcory that is now in /sdcard/0 but unaccesable from anywhere except TWRP.

Move all your folders and files back to the old place, or get them to your pc with adb pull (use google if you want to now how) and flash the factory image for safety

You can learn to adb pull by clicking the link in my signature and then locating the adb and fastboot thread
Don't adb push your data back though. Adb pushing your entire sdcard back will cause permissions problems so use MTP to transfer data back

its a common issue with L, i even experienced it myself. first, there is a short terminal emulator command you can use. i dont know what it is, but a search should find it for you. itll move all back to where it should be. or secondly, you can do what i did. i didnt know there was a terminal command, so i used root explorer to move everything back manually. took me about 15-20 minutes.

I already know how to adb pull but it just gives me the output seen on the picture...

there appears to be 3 different terminal emulator scripts people have been using, one for for some but not for others. heres one that i found, try it out in a terminal emulator app..
su(press enter)
restorecon -r /data/media/0/*(press enter)

I've tried your command but it did nothing.
But I found a way simpler solution now, as I could still access my data in TWRP I was able to flash a 4.4.4 Rom (that I luckily still had on my phone^^) and now I can access everything including the "0" Folder on my pc again. So I'll move everything on my pc now and then copy it to the /sdcard directory
Thanks though for your help, really appreciate the support from the xda-community!!
But I gotta say good night now as it is already 1am but I will update this post one more time tomorrow giving a final result.

You already know /sdcard isn't working properly. Pull /data/media/0

Rooted now how do I flash a rom?

My buddy got this phone I want to hook it up as he's not great with tech stuff i rooted with z4root and just need to know how to access recovery cause i didn't see a reinstall packages option in standard recovery ? Any help would be awesome thanks guys
I just rooted with Z4root... then I installed Titanium Backup and then ROM Manager, giving both apps root access (which I verified with the SuperUser app). In ROM Manager I did "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" and chose the Fascinate option and was told that it downloaded the latest ClockworkMod Recovery. What's my next step?... Choose "Reboot into Recovery" within ROM Manager or do it another way. (My goal is to install Voodoo5 using the stock ROM for now. I have the Voodoo5 file on the SD card.)
EDIT: Whoops. I just realized that I had downloaded the two files to get CWM working but hadn't followed the unzipping, etc. instructions. I'd better go back and read that CWM thread again...
First get CWM working
Then check out this ROM
Or this ROM
and if you really wanna get fancy check out this kernel
Just in case you screw up
If you need more help on each specific topic, just ask in the appropriate areas and there is usually someone around that can answer questions.
Thanks for the quick links... really appreciate it.
BTW - Titanium Backup asks for USB Debugging to be enabled... do you have to do this? It creates issues for me when connecting the phone as mass storage to my PC.
ALSO - I'm assuming I should take an initial backup with Ti before I get too far into this, right? Not having done a backup before... is Ti the best to use? (Do I just choose batch and pick an option(s)? Does choosing "Backup user apps + system data" backup game save data?) EDIT: Just did this and it ran fine but it switched my Live wallpaper back to stock?!? WTF?

Quick links are awesome! They save time, for sure.
Check the box to ask each time for mass storage and kies. Then you can have debugging enabled, and yes you have to have it enabled or TB won't do it's thing properly. You can switch it back and forth also. That's what I do.
I use TB to do my app and system data backups. Just run a batch backup on user apps and system data, like you said. That's the best option to start with. This isn't the same as a nandroid backup, but it's a good second choice for if you need to wipe data and restore apps quickly like a ROM install that requires you to wipe data/factory reset.

Perfect. Thanks! Only thing is... USB dubugging doesn't stay ticked, it's ticked and Ti says it's not, or the connection still triggers a missing driver error message with Vista on the PC. Oh well.

Nandroid backup will be there once you get CWM working.
You can do everything from the phone, just read down through the pages to find the people that have done it. They have left instructions using terminal emulator and root explorer. You will find that in a lot of instances many problems will have different ways of dealing with them. You probably don't have the Android SDK which is how you get ADB working on your computer. This isn't critical, it just makes it so that you will have to either install it or use the other means available. (ie terminal emulator and root explorer)
Still getting errors after trying several of the things in the thread... Q:I never did get a robot voice when I ran Z4root and never saw a place to choose permanent... should I run Z4root again? I mean, I was able to install Ti, etc. so I must have root, right? But I think my issues stem from not being able to get redbend_ua into the /system/xbin folder. Astro can't paste it there, Root Explorer can't paste it there, but in the terminal it appears like chmod worked... thoughts?

I tried this. Used root explorer to finally get redbend_ua into system/xbin but when I try to run the commands in the post it cannot find redbend_ua. I also cannot cd into xbin within the emulator to ls ... says xbin not found. Explorer can see it there... what gives? do you have to restore redbend_ua inside the xbin directory or will it work to restore it elsewhere?
EDIT: cd to /system/xbin worked and an ls shows the redbend_ua there but the chmod 777 redbend_ua fails to "Unable to chmod redbend_ua: No such file or directory
EDIT to the EDIT: Hang on... think I may have found where I went wrong. What's the terminal command for delete?

Are you doing /system/xbin? The first / is important. You don't need to cd to xbin, though.

Isn't there anyway to flash a rom using odin ? If not are the codes the same for terminal emulator as they are for adb to get cwm working? I'm from the vibrant section of this site running nero v4 right now I have a good understanding of odin for the most part but this not having an easy recovery is bs lol

I've never flashed a ROM using Odin, but that doesn't mean that it can't be done. The process should be the same using terminal emulator or adb, just more of a pain. I agree it would be nice to have full CWM Recovery support (or any full recovery support) but I don't have the money to spend on a phone to send to Koush right now to get that done. As soon as I do, this will be done and then I'll have a tester phone for firmware builds. It really isn't that difficult to get it working, though. I've done it probably 30-40 times now and even the first time the only flub was in a typo for the second to last character (thought it was a 1 and not an L)
So you type this stuff in all in one line or what?

Depending on which parts you are talking about, yes. Each new line is a line of code. If it moves to a new line, hit enter.

[Q] [URGENT] HELP!!! Followed instructions, now stuck at Boot Screen!?? [SGS4G]

I sure hope someone can help me! I followed the instructions posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122508&page=3
Here is a detailed list of steps I've taken:
1. I had previously rooted my phone, some months ago, and I don't recall the specific steps but I'm pretty sure it involved BusyBox and SuperUser..
2. I had seen earlier instructions involving the use of ClockWorkMod ROM Manager, BUT I only installed the App, I DID NOT do any flashing with it (or anything at all). I simply uninstalled ROM Manager as soon as I saw the newer post and warnings!
3. I downloaded the "update.zip" and "recovery" files to my Dropbox from the links posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
4. Opened my preferred File browser, "File Expert". It has root permissions, and handily, connects to Dropbox as well. I selected Menu > Mount > Mount as Read Write.
5. Copied the two files from my Dropbox account to the root of my SD card. Then, realizing the instructions actually required them to be in /system/bin, copied the files again, browsed to /system/bin, and Pasted the files, selecting "Overwrite" when asked.
5. I exited out of File Expert, powered down my phone, waited a minute, and then pressed (all together at the same time, but starting in this order): VOL Up + VOL Down + Power. Held all three for about 3 or 4 seconds until I saw the typical boot screen that says "Galaxy S 4G exclusively from T-Mobile -- SAMSUNG" -- waited another moment, then released the buttons.
6. Ohh CRAP!
It's been about five or ten minutes and it is STILL sitting there on the same Boot Screen! I'm afraid to turn off the device, afraid to do anything at this point, I'm terrified I've bricked my phone!
I've seen bits and pieces around these forums regarding something called "Odin", but my worst fear at this point is that I may be at risk for losing all my data. *sigh* Backing up my phone was my whole goal in the first place (Probably took precisely the wrong approach..)!
So...
ANY IDEAS? Any possible way to save my phone AND my data??
The update.zip was supposed to stay on the sd card. Only the recovery.bin file was to be pushed to the system.bin folder. Your not bricked. If you were your phone would be dead. Showing no life at all. As far as how to boot the phone I'm not sure. I would pull the battery and put in back in then try powering on. Don't know if it will work or not. If not you may need Odin.

Moving to Q&A
I think at this point, you won't be able to recover your phone without losing all your data.
I've goofed and had my phone stuck like that, too. I was able to use adb to catch it and get it into download mode. I didn't try getting into adb shell, though. If you can do that, then you can move the update.zip from /system/bin to /sdcard. If you can open the shell window then try the following commands:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system
cd /system/bin
mv update.zip /sdcard/
reboot

Phone won't finish boot process, need urgent help

Alright so looks like I did something completely stupid and now my phone won't finish the boot process. I was looking at some remappings for the recent key to the menu option and from a post in the development section I found a thread in the International One X development forum that had re-odexed files so that the recent key stayed as the recent key and holding the home button became the menu key. Since they were re-odexed and I had root access I figured I would just manually replace them on my phone with Root Explorer...bad idea. The files were:
System/Framework/android.policy.odex
System/Usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl
After I moved them and reset permissions I rebooted my phone and now it goes through the first couple of boot animations but gets stuck on screen that displays beats audio at the bottom.
I really need to know what to do to fix this. When I plug my phone into my computer it recognizes it as a new \drive, but I don't have access to any of it (still says I need to mount). I also have the android SDk and adb installed if thats of any help. I would really like to not lose any data so hopefully thats possible.
Please help me with this if you have any knowledge of what to do.
Just one little quick update. Even though my computer won't let me access my One X as a drive, when I use command prompt and adb to check for adb devices my One X is listed.

Alright I'm downloading that now.
In the meantime, how do I get root access with adb/give it permission to overwrite read only files? I pulled the two files that caused this messed and pulled my backups, but when I push them back to the phone it tells me I can't because their read only. I'd rather do it this way since I will be changing only the files that caused the problem.
EDIT: Is the RUU really going to delete all the information on my device? If thats the case I would really appreciate figuring out how to get adb to push my backuped files to the /system directory instead

Yeah, the RUU returns your phone to factory (but doesn't touch your personal files)
EDIT: Also, just pulling this off the top of my head so take it with a grain of salt...
adb devices
adb shell
su
*grant the su request on your device*
adb push <from> <to>

Thanks for your comment. I used the RUU and it kept my personal data so its not a big lose. Had to reinstall a few apps, but for most of them (games at least) my saved data was still there.
I tried a lot using adb and just couldn't get it to work. I don't the phone got far enough through the boot process for root access to be allowed. I was able to run the one click root tool while it was in its stuck boot phase, but it still wouldn't give me permission to modify the /system portion of the phone to be read/write.
All in all though this was a great learning experience. Prior to this happening I knew nothing about adb and now I know commands for pulling, pushing, remounting, shell commands, and other things. I also learned how to fix a softbrick (first one) and what RUU is.

[Q] Unfortunately Launcher has stopped and other issues

Hi guys,
I've been reading you for a while, but this is actually my first post.
Currently stuck with a "Unfortunately, Launcher has stopped" on my tablet, with no access to any menus except my Settings. The menu bar (back, home and multitasking) is now gone. I've got my keyboard to navigate, but something in the display is also quite wrong, image seems to be zoomed, or set at the wrong resolution. Tried to search on the forum, but all posts found were not about the same rom or the same issue. Sorry if I missed one.
Here's a little background story:
I've rooted my TF300T about a month ago and installed Hydro 4.1. It has been working very well since then, but in the last days, I thought that my tablet felt a little slower than usual, so I started searching if an update to 4.2 was available.
I'm not sure if this is what caused the issue or not, but I went into my "Power button" menu and went into "Recovery" mode (instead of Shutdown, reboot, etc.), which then restarted my unit into TWRP menu.
I then selected the "System" submenu and simply touched "Reboot". (terms might not be exact). At the first reboot, I got the problems that I described.
Can't do much, popup keeps appearing on my screen. I haven't tried yet to clear the cache of my Launcher, which I'm trying to avoid as I would prefer to avoid rearranging 5 pages of icons, but between that and reinstalling everything, obviously I prefer to simply lose my display preferences.
Can anyone help me about what caused my issue, and what can I do now?
Here are 2 screenshots that I took, showing that my bottom menu is missing and that the fonts aren't set right (clock and left icon). Also, my notifications menu now appears near the middle of my screen.
EDIT: I unfortunately cannot post links yet
I remember installing an app (with root access) that gave me a menu about my resolution. One thing that I'm wondering, could it be that the resolution got changed and I simply never rebooted since the change, which now caused my Launcher to crash? How can I launch an app without having access to the app menu?
Thanks in advance for your help.

What you describe is likely caused by changing the resolution. Are you still running hydro 4.1?
You can likely recover by replacing your build.prop or editing the one you now have. build.props are usualy rom specific so you need one from the rom you are using.

Yes, still using Hydro 4.1. I do have a build.prop editor installed on my tablet, but since I can't launch app, I don't know how to do it.
I'll try to connect the tablet to my PC and see if I can get access to my file from there.
Thanks!

I'm presently downloading 4.1 hydro to retrieve the build.prop. If you unzip it the build.prop is /system/build.prop also located there on your tab. I have another fifteen minutes to download if you wish for me to supply the file!

Boot into twrp – twrp provides adb access by default.
Use twrp mount menu and check mount system.
Then type
adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
adb shell chmod 644 /system/build.prop
in twrp reboot system
type
adb kill-server

We should be able to push with adb, set permissions, and reboot.

Ok, my Fastboot folder is currently at the root of my C drive on my PC
I entered your command and got after the first one "adb server is out of date. killing...
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
FYI, before I got your last post, I used Android commander to push the build.prop that I still had on my PC when I installed the custom hydro 4.1 rom.
After my reboot, I got the Asus logo, than a black screen that does nothing.
I then rebooted in Fastboot and followed your instructions.
So now, it seems that my pc doesnt see my tablet anymore when in TWRP. is this normal? Do I need to restart it after checking "Mount system"?

Ok, I just killed my adb.exe, tried the command again and that got rid of the out of date error.
But, still stuck with the "device not found".

Slowdown, I'm getting behind. I'm willing to help but you are now worse off than before.
Sit tight for five minutes and I'll try to give you a twrp flashable zip for your build.prop and hope that is the extent of the damage.
If not we'll try to go from there.

This is a twrp flashable zip that only replaces your build.prop with the one from hydro 4.1.

Alright, I'll wait for your answer before trying anything else.
So now, I've got your latest .zip file.
Still can't see my TF300T from my PC, so, ADB is a no go for now.
In fact, I do see it in the Device Manager, but since my last reboot, it now shows an exclamation mark on it as if my drivers weren't good.
Since you mentioned the file is a flashable zip, I'm guessing that I can flash it using TWRP without going through my PC?
Can you give me precise info on that, since I do not want to mess with my system more than I already did.
Thanks

Look at the bottom of my previous post. You will find a new link there. Just flash with twrp and reboot. Don't worry about wiping or any of that, just flash and reboot.

Yep, that's the file I was talking about.
I now need to flash and reboot, your file is at the root of an SDcard in my TF300T, I go through the Install menu and then, can't seem to view the content of my sdcard. Tried to mount it first but can't select it either, it will simply stay on "Internal Storage".
EDIT: The RCK icon is the only one right now that boots me into something. If I try the USB icon, it just stays on that screen forever.
Trash the two zips you have downloaded. I'm providing a new one for when we get back to that point. And there will be no doubt about which zip you are using.

OK. First I'll explain your earlier comment about adb being old. Twrp expects a recent adb or refuses to allow adb access ( we'll not worry at the moment about that but it is something you need to address later (I hope).
If you have a cord between your tablet and pc remove it. The sdcard may be mounted as data on the pc and not allow twrp to mount it.
You have been using this sdcard prior to this exercise?
Do you have any backups or flashable zips or anything of that nature on your internal sdcard?
If so what?

Zips trashed, kept only the one provided in your latest answer.
No cord between PC and tablet. Still unable to click on "Using external SD" or "Mount SDCard". It simply won't let me check the box or switch the bullet.
As for using this SDcard before, yes in a PC, but no, first time in my Asus. Also tried with another one just in case and same result.
As for backups and flashable zips, I kept everything from when I did my root and rom install.
I do know that I have a backup in the Restore menu of TWRP, which seems about the time I installed it. I suppose I could simply do a restore and avoid additional headaches, but my question is, what exactly will it restore? At this point, I'm mentally prepared to go back to what I had after installing Hydro 4.1, as long as I can use the tablet ASAP.
Asap = restore your backup.
If I'm restoring a different rom I'll wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache, and Factory Reset. If the backup is from the same rom I'm flashing and I want to keep the apps I have Installed since the backup I won't Factory Reset.
Good Luck!

So, I did the restore, and I'm up and running, but, no more Hydro 4.1. I guess my backup was probably what got done right before the installed it.
The good thing is, my tablet is working again and my root is still active. The bad part is that I'm gonna have to dig my head again in all the tutorials and try to find the best one.
Hey, I wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help, if it wasn't for guys like you, newbies like me would be stuck with useless thin computers.

Great I'm glad you are happy. I had hoped for the outcome you expressed but this works also.
You're welcome!

Cant delete backups / Memory Full

Hi, Im new to this device but right after I got it I did the right thing and voided my warranty Rooted and installed a custom recovery. The recovery has been a bit of a pain but that is a story for another thread.
The problem I am having is that when I try to take a backup from recovery it errors (I forget the error, sorry. ) however the backup is still right there in the backup directory. I tried a second attempt at a backup (to see if it would error again) and these two backups filled my remaining memory. lI of course used my file explorer to delete these extraneous backups-- only to see that they are not deletable. I also tried on the PC. The folder lists read and write in the permissions. I am kind of at a loss as to what to do. IIRC correctly from a while back with this issue the answer lies somewhere in CHMOD, but I cant quite seem figure it out. CD to the directory in a terminal emulator and then CHMOD 777? Thanks for your help in advance.

If you are using TWRP, It is not possible to delete twrp backup images using normal ways. Either you can install esfile explorer and navigate to device/data/media/0/twrp/backups/ and delete from there. Or use file manager in TWRP to delete the backups. I think there is also another option in twrp to view or delete backups.

Ill check out the other things you said, but Im actually getting this problem in ESfile... Ill report back if I can get at it through the recovery.
Edit: ESfile works. I followed the path you laid out ad got there just fine I didnt realize Id have to take such a roundabout path. Thank you.
