[Q] Made the switch - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Hey guys as you can tell I made the switched after I had and unfortunate issue with my previous phone. Pretty much the act of god and stupid me I didnt have insurance on it so I had to start a new line and fork over the 220$ price tag, but anyways. I got the phone last night, and it's an amazing phone. For some reason i always been afraid to try out HTC. For some reason seemed to complex to me, but after I did more research it actually isn't.
I have a few questions and maybe I can get some help:
1) I follow root junky on youtube, and pretty much watched all his videos on the Verizon M8. From my understanding after reading through the forums that firewater will not work on newer m8 models, and that I would have to pay 25$ and get sunshine. This true about firewater? I had seen a few post about people saying it works, and more saying that it wont. I do have the newest sense 6, and and the update came to the phone.
2) I also noticed about the temporary root access apk, and that with a phone reboot it resets itself. So if i do the root and then obtain the root and use titanium back up that actually resets also?
3) I went threw the forum again about water proof/ dust proof, drop proof cases. Anyone here have one or used one and what do you think?
4) Lastly if I do the sunshine is that considered full root, and then I can add twrp through flashify, and then roms if I decide to go that route?
Thanks in advance,
the_rooter

Firewater is working on some people's still. It depends what hardware the phone has for some reason. So your process to root and soff will be, following the threads here.
Use weak sauce to temp root, download SuperSU after, do not open the app or anything. Don't try and update binaries or anything.
Then use firewater, using the correct directions, there's 3 different sets if I recall. Just pick the right one that is for using weak sauce root.
Then if firewater works great, you'll be soff and unlocked. If not, buy sunshine and run it. Then you'll get soff and unlocked.
You'll then get rid of SuperSU and uninstall weak sauce app as well.
Then flash a recovery. I'd suggest fastboot flashing it, but I guess flashify would work. But you'll already have fastboot working if you tried firewater so might as well flash twrp with fastboot.
Once you have your recovery, download the latest SuperSU zip found here in chainfires thread and flash it in twrp. Then reboot and you will be permanent rooted. Then you can flash all the Roms or whatever you want.
Hope that helps.

Did anyone find out the difference in hardware the phones that work, and is there a way to check on that or no?

No, you just try firewater. It really is easy. And if it works great, if not, no big deal. It will tell you, whelp, this won't ever work for your device is it fails. Then just use sunshine. Just read the how to threads and it really is simple. Droidmodderx on YouTube has a couple videos that are Verizon specific that may lend a hand too.

Once your s-off you will stay s-off unless they release an update ota and it can affect s-off and you flash it, in that case sunshine is supposed to work for your device once again. Just dont flash any new update until you know for sure that it wont affect s-off.

Pretty sure once you're s-off, you're s-off until you restore s-on. Flashing a custom rom won't change the secure write status.

Once your soff and custom recovery there is no need to complete this process again your done with it. You can flash ROMs in recovery if you don't like it.. Wipe and load something else : )
Edit.... Lol two of you beat me to the answer...

[GUIDE] How To Unroot And Then Reroot With 4.24.651.1

You Must Be Rooted With S-OFF To Do This!
Seeing how there is no way to root 4.24 yet, I thought I would throw a little something together in case anyone needs to unroot before taking their phone into Sprint. This will return your phone to stock with S-ON while leaving a backdoor to reroot with. I have tested this as best I can without actually upgrading my hBoot (I want to keep the eng hboot), but there are no guarantees you won't run into issues. You also must flash the modified PC36IMG before setting S-ON in order for this to work.
While it would be trivial to create a script to automate this process, I wanted to make sure you know exactly what this does so it is easier to re-root. Plus there's no fun in having a script do all the work.
I've included all the files needed to use ADB and Fastboot on Windows, Linux and Macs. They have been renamed to match the operating system (eg. ADB for Windows is adbw, fastboot for Linux is fastbootl) and you may need to set the correct permissions in order to use them.
You will need:
Unrevoked Forever - The latest version of Unrevoked's S-OFF and S-ON tools
E4GUnroot.zip - The modified 4.24.651.1 PC36IMG zip and an unpacked copy of Amon RA's 1.8 recovery
Basic knowledge about ADB and Fastboot
Plenty of Battery Life
A little common sense

How To Unroot:
Make a Nandroid with the Boot, System and Data partitions along with your .android folder.
Make sure you have Radio S-OFF and not S-OFF from the ENG hBoot. If your bootloader shows SHIP S-OFF you should be good, if it shows ENG S-OFF then you will want to run Unrevoked Forever to make sure S-OFF is set from the radio.
Use ADB to reboot into RUU mode.
Code:
adb reboot oem-78
Once in RUU mode flash the PC36IMG. Be very careful that you do not interrupt it, doing so can easily result in the permanent bricking of your phone.
Code:
fastboot flash zip PC36IMG_4.24.651.1_Rootable.zip
Watch the output and make sure it completes correctly. If you get an error saying something about "remote 90: hboot pre-update" flash it again.
When it's finished flashing reboot and make your way into the Recovery.
Code:
fastboot reboot
--or--
fastboot reboot-bootloader
The recovery may show a green arrow for a few moments, wait for it to turn into the Red Triangle with an Exclamation Mark inside of it. Then push Amon RA's recovery to the phone and bring up the UI.
Code:
adb push amon_ra_1.8-mod /
adb shell "busybox --install /sbin"
adb shell "nohup /sbin/recovery &"
Now that the Recovery is up, use it to flash Unrevoked's S-ON tool.
You are now fully unrooted with S-ON! After you remove your SD card there will be nothing on your phone to show it was rooted.
Click to collapse
How To Root Again:
Reboot into the Recovery and bring up Amon RA's recovery.
Run Unrevoked's S-OFF tool to unlock the NAND.
Flash your Recovery of choice and use it to restore your Nandroid
And that's it! You should be good to go again.

Good job and very educated post.
Just figured it may come in handy to someone, I had to unroot mine a few times to take it in to Sprint and I always did something similar to this to make it easier to reroot. If you wanted too you could even restore your data partition from a nandroid and remove all the root apps, that way your phone is still how you like it just unrooted for the time being.
Thank you sir. Very informative and useful post..
I have a question about this since it seems what your describing may help me. Since I got my E3d I have been playing around with my e4g and I upgraded mt hboot not realizing it would turn s-on. I know I'm still rooted since i have flashed at least 3 custom roms since then. I am on cm7.3 currently. For my case would using the unrevoked s-on/s-off tool to turn s-off work?
Great job here, hope I never have to use this though but should help many that need to take in their phone for service.

I've been with my Evo since the beginning so I have no issues, but a friend of mine just bought the Evo. Unfortunately, his came with gingerbread with 4.24.651. Since his is not rooted to begin with, we can't unroot and reroot, so is it safe to assume that this method will not work? If so, are there any known methods to root? thanks in advance....

[Q] a couple of rooting/unlocking questions

Hey everyone,
I'm kind of a noob when it comes to development for the HOX and HTC in general; I previously had a Galaxy S II and it was incredibly easy to root and flash custom roms. I just had a couple of questions regarding rooting for the HOX:
1. I'm currently on 1.85, and I know that means I can still root. However, the 2.20 update hasn't even popped up on my phone. Also, whenever I check for updates, it just returns to the previous screen, like there's no update available. Does this mean I can still root using the 1.85 one click exploit?
2. How "safe" is rooting/unlocking the bootloader on the HOX? I know unlocking the bootloader is not officially supported on the AT&T version, and that you have to get SuperCID in order to unlock it. With all this modification, is it pretty safe to root and unlock the HOX? I really don't have the money to spend on another phone if I somehow brick it lol.
Thanks!

Good to know, thanks! I thought it might still work but wasn't sure. I see... What would be an example of a soft brick? I've read that if a problem occurs, you can run an RUU to restore it to factory default. Also, I don't have much experience with ADB either lol. I've read Gunnyman's primer though.

Issues installing supersu after s-off

I don't normally ask for help usually many others have had the same problems as me and I can learn from their mistakes but this M8 has given me more headaches than any other phone I've ever rooted. I was using a SGS5 until a few weeks ago because my S3 died in its sleep and I didn't do my research before heading to the Verizon store. Once I realized the bootloader wasn't going to be unlocked I traded for the M8 because I can't keep anything stock. After 3-4 hours fighting with firewater I finally broke down and used SunShine to S-off but now I'm having trouble getting SuperSu to install. I am fully S-off and when I open the SuperSu app it says I need to update but it fails every time. While fighting with firewater I tried using Superuser so I just tried that and it fails as well. I really want to try Viper but until I have SuperSu set up I don't want to risk doing anything to it. Any help is appreciated
Edit: Even after SunShine I don't have root until weaksauce kicks in. I think I'm supposed to, huh?

I figure if you wanted to do this you would've done it anyways but going to recommend this anyways. If you would like, the simplest way to do this is by flashing a custom recovery such as TWRP or Philz CWM and using that to flash the SuperSU.zip which will flash both the app and the binaries required to use it.

SuperSU flashable zip & just incase you cant find it, the download link.

If you're s-offed and unlocked you don't even need to root first, just flash a custom rom after making a nandroid. Every custom rom is already root injected.
Or like previously mentioned, flash a supersu zip and it'll inject the proper binaries.

[Q] Recently Locked Bootloader, S-ON & Unrooted TAMPERED FLAG

So, I needed to return my phone back to stock recently (yes, HTC ONE M8 VERIZON).
Followed the directions posted here and all went perfect. Did have to purchase the "Universal Unroot" app to get SuperSU to uninstall.
About 20 minutes later, I get a notification stating there was an update from Verizon for OTA. I follow the onscreen prompts (figured, what does it matter, phone is stock again) after the install, I get a prompt stating the phone has been tampered (or something to that affect), so I load the bootloader and I see the *** TAMPERED *** flag on the top.
Is there anyway to get that removed now that I am no longer rooted, on S-OFF and my bootloader is locked again... Before turning the phone back in to Verizon?
Did you take a nandroid backup after rooting? If so just flash that. As for the ota, they are more trouble than they are worth most of the time. You can just grab the radio and firmware from it, posted in the development area, then flash nusense6 custom Rom to get 4.4.3. It's mostly stock.

I can't remember honestly.
I have 2 folders in my TWRP backup folder on ext_sd.
The problem right now is I am no longer rooted so, I am a bit stuck...
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't think there is a root method for Verizon 4.4.3... Is there?

The problem right now is I am no longer rooted so, I am a bit stuck...
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't think there is a root method for Verizon 4.4.3... Is there?

Check out this thread. It should help you. You are still on 4.4.2 cause the update stopped.

The update did go through though... I'm on 4.4.3 stock S-ON, no root and locked bootloader... And now SuperSU is reinstalled.

I believe the only option for you now would be to use Sunshine to achieve s-off again and then reset your flag. That will cost $25 unless someone has anything else I haven't been able to find.

Where did you download from? The new version is supposed to temp root by itself.
Check out their website: http://theroot.ninja/

First off, thank you for responding so often trying to help me out with this...
That is the link I downloaded the APK from, it was named "Sunshine_latest.apk" or something to that affect...
I actually just noticed that I still have a few older TWRP backups stored on my ext_sd, saved under /TWRP/BACKUPS/**DEVICESERNO**...
Can I flash an older backup although I am on the below?
Stock Recovery
S-ON
Locked Bootloader
No root?

I'm sorry, but I have never used sunshine so I don't really know what to tell you from here. I used firewater back in April when the phone first came out.
Best thing I could tell you is to check out their irc chat http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=sunshine-support to see if someone in there can help you out. @jcase and @beaups are the ones that created the program and they are usually in there to help.

thanks for the tip, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel, tomorrow I may be all good.
I can tell you 100% for sure that Sunshine does work with stock Verizon 4.4.3. They updated their thread with that information. You'll probably have to pay the 25$ (if you haven't already paid it before) but it is seriously the easiest S-OFF exploit there is. You just install the apk, open it, you get a prompt for payment either paypal or credit card, then it runs compatibility tests and then S-OFFs. You literally have to do nothing but install the apk. You don't even need root to use it. It does it all itself. After you run Sunshine, fastboot flash the latest TWRP, then flash SuperSU zip for root. (you can get that here: http://download.chainfire.eu/420/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip ) and your are good to go. Resetting the tampered flag may be difficult though. I'm sure someone has done it somewhere though.

I tried running sunshine on my phone... It wouldn't run because for whatever reason, it couldn't gain root access to the phone.

Then go grab Weak sauce ask out of the original development forum, install it, open it, then run sunshine again. That's what I had to do when I used it. It was before they built root into it.

Your prolly right. I would still try it tho. If you paid for Sunshine I would definitely contact Jcase on IRC.
alright, so jcase just worked his magic on my phone...
he typed some stuff, it worked, i'm happy...
i am now back to stock ROM, S-OFF, Unlocked bootloader, stock recovery & rooted
i followed the instructions here once jcase got me all sorted out with the above...
what i see becoming an issue is, I am on verizon software version 2.21.605.2...
all I want to do is get my phone to a state where I can return it to verizon from here...
I have read the 2 major write ups I have found on returning a phone to stock but, they are all for previous versions of verizon software...
anyone have any ideas/links to give a brother a hand?

Well they will work. You could use the RUU and return to 1.55.605.2. Doesn't matter what version you are on now, it will work. It will put you at almost 100% stock. Just re-lock the bootloader with a command and you can send it back.

[Q] Just bought a brand new HTC M8 need help

The phone is still on 4.4.2 and tried to OTA update but I quickly caught it and put on airplane mode and disabled all radios.
So the question is, how can I root it and S off?
Android Version:4.4.2
Software Number 1.55.605.2
Kernel 3.4.0-gfa487c9

Root with WeakSauce, then find Firewater to unlock that thing immediately. After you're unlocked, then use the RUU running around here to update.

Is Forrester an app? Also whats RUU?
No harm but honestly, don't you think somebody has posted this somewhere on a development forum for such a popular device. Go to the HTC one m8 general forum and then look at the posts. Somebody has completed a thread specifically detailing how to root, s-off, bootloader unlock, and flash a custom recovery.

awesome tyvm
whelp, this sucks, firewater can not work on your device
no amount of reflashing, retrying, or ruuing will fix...
DO NOT COME TO IRC ASKING FOR UPDATES OR ETAS!!!!!!
if we are able to fix this issue, it will be announced
bye bye.....sorry it didn't work out.
Keep getting this sadly

Uninstall supersu and weaksauce, then install weaksauce then install supersu but DO NOT OPEN SUPERSU ever not until after your done with firewater. When your phone reboots while using firewater right after android loads open the weaksauce app and make sure it shows you have root access. This is where it usually fails because weaksauce is not giving root access during the use of firewater, when you manually open weaksauce it will give root access then firewater will work.
tried and it did not work, this is driving me nuts
Just use the sunshine method if the others not working. I mean that's what I would do.

After adb reboot and before running the rest of the command open weaksauce. Then continue.

Exactly that was what I listed lol. Because sometimes weaksauce will not give root access and if it does not then trying the rest of firewater will not work, you open weaksauce and make sure it confirms you have root access otherwise reboot phone and start over just never open supersu until after firewater has given you s-off. This is where many people cant get firewater to work because they are assuming weaksauce gave them root and it may take weaksauce a while to give root access so you need to open weaksauce then finish with the steps on firewater. It took me a few m8's to figure out but it really makes a lot of sense.
disable OTA -prior to root?
Been looking around for a solid answer to this and haven't been able to find one. Since this thread is essentially what I am looking to do (get M8 now, hope it still has 4.4.3 or lower) and unlock and root prior to taking any OTA, figured I would ask here as it very much related to the OP.
Is there a way to disable the OTA update prior to being rooted? I'll need to turn on the phone after I receive it and it will go through the normal setup so I can check the OS version prior to running any unlock/root method. During this time I am sure VZW will try and push the OTA. I know I can 'postpone' the install (usually) but wasn't sure if there was a better, more permanent way to lock out the OTA from happening just to be safe.
Thanks

The ota you can chose to not install it just dont hit install and dont mess with the update at all, and try firewater but from what I have seen posted most cant get it to work any more, my advice is try a few times and look at the tips listed in various posts but be prepared to have to use sunshine. Its $25 but if you have to use it then you have to use it, otherwise you will just be wasting your time where you could be enjoying the benefits of s-off. Either that or sell it and go with at&t or tmobile and use htc dev for free and live fine with s-on, those are pretty much your only choices, good luck and enjoy when your unlocked.

That is exactly what I did. Could not get Firewater to work, so went with Sunshine and worked like a charm. I now have TWRP and SuperSU installed and ready to go.
One question though - the OTA file did get downloaded and it was big...... anyone know where that file gets downloaded to so I can delete it to free up space? Been searching on the phone and online and can't find a good answer (it isn't in cache).

You did look in download on your internal memory right ? You could just do a full wipe of everything except ext sd card, then just make sure everything except ext sd is selected, or take sd out. Just have your rom of choice on your sd card ie mine would be viperone 3.1.0 lol. Another thing to get a full wipe make sure everything is mounted in the twrp mount settings.
If my suggestions help you please hit the thanks option at the bottom left of my post please.
