First post... let me itroduce myself first.
I'm Stu....I've been lurking here for years and finally unlocked my first phone!
I'm currently using the SideKick4g, and this foru was a HUGE help in the unlocking process. Thanks!!!
I think I may have gotten a little crazy with the deleting, however. Everything is running fine at this point other than when I try to change ring/notification settings. Trying to access things gives me a force close every time.
I'm guessing I deleted something crucial. Anybody know what it may have been and how I can go about fixing this and/or getting around the situation? Will a simple program such as ringdroid replace whatever I got rid of? Shold I just flash a custom ROM?

Let me add that I rooted with SuperOneClick, and used RootExplorer for ditching my bloatware. Hope that helps a little!

What did you remove? Ringtones are stored in /system/media/, do they just not show up when trying to set it, or does something else happens? Are you missing your stock ringtones, or just your custom ones?
When I go to settings>sound...selecting eithr phone ringtone or notification ringtone causes my force close.
I think maybe I deleted my system/media thinking it was the stock media player
Not that I'm too bummed about it. The stock rings are all just crappy versions of the "T-jingle".

Well, looks like you took a risk and it came back to bite you. Reflash your ROM and try again.
Well...there's where the problem lies. I've never flashed a ROM. I'm sure I can handle it....just never done it.
And if I do need to flash a new ROM anyways, I feel like I should just flash a custom ROM. The gingerclone looks pretty nice. Does this delete my original ROM all together in the process? Are custom ROMs free of bloat?
That will wipe everything, so you should make a backup beforehand. yes, custom roms are almost always free of bloat, GingerClonev2 is only 124MB, where the stock rom is over 200MB. There are a few issues we're still working out, but it's pretty steady. otherwise, Teddy is releasing an update to an older ROM sometime soon as well, so I'd be on the lookout for that.
Okay cool. I'm gonna do some quick research and figure out how to do this.
What's the best way to save my original ROM to my desktop on my computer?

If you have CWM, use the backup menu, which uses Nandroid to backup everything by dumping everything on your phone into images. This all dumps onto your SDcard in the clockworkmod folder.
You can't brick your phone using CWM, you can only do that using ODIN, and only if you're not following directions/being intentionally stupid

Once the CWM/ROM manager has backed everything up....i should be able to copy the backup to my desktop? same thing with installing a new ROM

Yeah, copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop, that'll copy everything off. I wouldn't suggest Rom Manager, many people have problems with that CWM. Look in the Dev forum for the CWM thread, and use that one.
In recovery mode, there should be a backup and restore menu. use the backup option, and then copy the clockworkmod folder from your sdcard to your desktop. that's your backup.
Okay. I plugged in my phone to the computer, and dragged a copy of the entire clockworkmod folder to my desktop.
Gingerclone is downloaded. Drag it to my SD? anywhere specific? or just on it?
On my desktop now is: folder/download, .recoverychecpoint(1KB), .salted_hash(1KB), .settings(1KB), and .settings2(1KB)
This is my backup correct?
I lost rom manager/root explorer.
After clearing stuff out and rebooting...it rebooted to the original rom with none of my added apps.
Can't download anything either at this point.

Download manager keeps stopping and forces closed.
I reboot into recovery...and my options are:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
If I try to reinstall packages, I get" E: failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip(no such file or directory)
E: signature verification failed.
I'm in over my head now. Anyone out there maybe wanna help walk me thorough this on AIM or google chat or anything?

Edit: actually what it sounds like you did was something similiar to what i did with a samsung galaxy s i deleted a bunch of apps and the i did a data wipe and factory restore without flashing my custom firmware through cwm and when it factory resetted it was real buggy from all the missing apps so u will have to odin

So I'm using lfaber's Supercharged V5 ROM and I tried to add the Reboot option to the power menu (JRW's method).
I messed up when following the instructions, however. I downloaded the ZIP to my phone and then installed it from the SD card, but forgot to wipe the cache first like the instructions said. So I wiped the cache and then went back and installed the ZIP again.
When I booted back up, I got force close messages for what seemed to be all my apps. Is this because I messed up the instructions? And what should I do to fix it? Can I backup into SCV5 again like I did at first or should I go back to the stock deodexed 2.3.6?

Usually it will force close because of an issue with signing, not because of cache wiping... try flashing the different 1% battery mods. (Don't forget to wipe cache partition and Dalvik Cache)

Is everything force closing or are just Google/Motorola apps force closing? Just keep closing the notification windows until they stop.
There's three ways of getting the zip onto your SD card, two of which may not be possible...
-Use the Motorola "Phone Portal" app to "Connect with wifi" and transfer the zip from your computer to your phone via wifi.
-Use the browser to download the zip file and make sure you can find it on your sd card
-Use a microSD card reader to put the file on your sd card
However there's another thing you can do that should fix you up.
-Make a CWM backup
-Flash SCV5, then the update zip
-Use CWM to "advanced restore" "data".
This will fix you up on any system modifications but restore your apps/data.
I didn't have an sd card reader, so I just backed up my system, then backed up into SCV5 and flashed the update. Phone is running fine with no force close issues.

I'm a little confused as to why the 1% battery mod is involved at all?
Also, restoring data via CWM didn't seem to bring back my home screen setup. Would I need to restore system in CWM for that? I'm guessing if I did that my force close issue would just come back though, right?

Restoring a CWM data backup should bring back your homescreen setup, as it restores the entire /data folder... Interesting. Don't restore system otherwise your problems will comeback
Very strange, shouldn't be nothing with the reboot.zip that would affect any of that unless you got a bad download?

Yea, I got an error when I backed up through CWM, but it was just generic. I was more worried about having the phone working at that point than having everything backed up, so I didn't worry about.

Not at all. When I first released the reboot.zip it worked fine with V5 but I have always run my 1% vertical mod and when I flashed it I lost the ability to reboot with the power menu. So I then went back and modified all of my 1% battery mods to work correctly with my reboot.zip. you should have zero problems with them as long as they are mine or the one that comes with V5. I have not had a chance to test with anything on 2.3.5 yet though
The reason I first recommend you to flash a different 1% battery mod was because it re-writes any system files that the first flash may have messed up. Now that you're up and running again you don't need to do anything else.
It's odd that your homescreen configuration wasn't saved... what launcher do you use?

I use the one that comes with SCV5, Go Launcher. I was able to restore the home screen directly from the Go Launcher app. So at this point, I'm up and running, but I still don't have the reboot option. Should I just backup as is (with SCV5.1) and try flashing the reboot option again the same way I did before? I would just seem weird if I just did the same thing again, because why I wouldn't just have that same force close issue like the first time?

I second that. Do a CWM backup then redownload the mod, and flash it. The download may have been corrupted last time around.

Edit: this worked perfect. I realized when I did the download again that originally downloaded via the QR code, so maybe there's something wrong with that? Or something wrong with my phones QR code reader? I used Goggles.

Every ROM I flash I try to Freeze/Uninstall and remove from Boot Many, the YouTube App.
I don;t use it ever, but even if it says freezed successfully it still comes back after reboot.
What's so special about it and will it creat a problem if I delete it and main question is how?

In my other android device experience, Nook Color / Simple Touch, YouTube is instrumental in the Google Apps authentication process. For instance to get market working on nooted versions of those devices you had to sign into YouTube first.
Why are you trying to get rid of it?

Never used it, if I need to I can view it in the brother. Just another app that loads up on boot and sits there using the battery

Fair enough. Why don't you give it a try? Make a nandroid backup and then delete the file via ADB in recovery mode (or move it to /data/local/tmp for easy restore). Clear Cache / Dalvik reboot and see if anything isn't working properly.
I would say you can delete via ADB in ICS but many people, myself included, are having issues mounting /system in ICS. It could be possible that this failure for /system to consistently mount could be why TiBu isn't freezing it properly.
Use root uninstaller, its how I have removed all system apps since my gb 2.3.1 days on my x10. A very effective method

I use 7zip. open the archive and delete it, or add whatever .apk you desire. I always do this before I even flash a rom. Winrar should work fine, though.
Did anyone try to backup the way suggested in this thread?
It'd be great, if it worked: a full backup (apps, settings, everything) without needing to root. I'm trying this right now, but when the phone prompts me to allow backup I tap on the "allow backup" button but it's if it weren't tapped (nothing happens, not even the tapping animation).
Someone tried this?
Edit: it would also allow access to some files that are unaccessible without root...

It will get part of the way through the backup, but silently errors out after a few packages and shows backup complete (when I know it isn't). Removing a problem app just results in it failing on the next one. On my Nexus 7 it works as expected, so there may be a bug in the stock version. Would be interesting if someone with CM or anything non stock could comment.

Agree, would be interesting to see if the issue is related to HTC rom.
I've read on the Nexus 7 subforum that a user is stuck at my same point. I wonder what's causing this...
I had no luck either, although it has been awhile since I tried. I thought I read something on the original documention that made it sound like I wouldn't have any luck. Forget what it was now--
I was able to get this to work with my wifes stock unrooted one s (still on android 4.03 and sense 4.0).
in developer options you need to specify a password BEFORE you start the backup and enter that password on the "full backup" start screen.
i also couldnt get it to create a file for the backup in C:\ so i created a folder, and put it in there, but made sure to check permissions and that the folder was not read only.
I havent restored the data yet, but actually getting the backup file and it being an appropriate size (about 680mb), i would say i am optimistic about the results.
I will report back after i root and update the OS.

I am unable to find the system/vendor files to remove them. I have root permissions since it allowed me to run Titanium Backup.
I used ES File Explorer and wasn't able to find the necessary folders to remove Monarch. Any advice?

Go into the settings of ES file explorer and check everything under root settings. The only folder you want to get rid of is the Apps in the vendor folder. Anything else can harm the system. I just used the cut feature on the apps folder and pasted it to my sd card to make sure it worked first. Good Luck!

I had to make sure to change it to always boot in parent mode or else it tried to boot the monarch interface on a cold start and, not having the necessary files any longer, just ended up with a blank screen. I had to restore a unit to factory and then switch to boot in parent mode, then remove the apps folder. Works like a charm now.

Guess I missed something and should've read better, how did you set it to boot only into parent mode.

I found no need to delete the vender/apps folder as it can be used to help get rid of "Android is upgrading ' message after each boot up that seem to come when you install apps from play store

I used TWRP to do anything - rooted or unrooted you can make change as you wish .
when you are in TWRP mount system then use advanced and file manager

I was able to get it to work by going into a startup manager and freezing kidsmode2 and nabimode. I erased the apps folder though cause I wanted the space freed up.

I deleted some files I shouldn't have. My nabi 2 keeps rebooting. It goes from the start up screen to "Android is upgrading..." Then back to the start up screen, then again. When I try to go to "Recovery Kernel" I get the Android laying down with the Red triangle over his chest..any suggestions?

1-switch off.
2-press power button & vol + together.
3-press vol - to go to recovery kernel and press vol + to select it.
3-android model should come lying down with red triangle!.
4-press vol - & vol + together.
5-select the system reset and press power button.
6-after that switch off and on with all new factory settings.

I created a new gapps package that does away with the upgrading message on every boot.

Completed the OTA to 1.9.37, root, and gapps install - had the upgrading message on every boot but fixed that with the new gapps package (thanks a lot to all the great developers on this forum!)
However I still have a problem since the root process that I haven't seen addressed so far after searching the forums.
After my putting the Nabi 2 to sleep and plugging in the charger, it will fully charge and turn the battery light green as it should, shortly after that the device then powers off and requires a reboot/cold start vs. just a quick click of the power button to return from sleep mode. It does reboot fine and has a full charge - all other operations are normal.
Any suggestions on how to eliminate this power down/reboot after charging?

I flashed your package but the android upgrading still shows up for me,only for a few secs and it seems as if no programs get upgraded...what are your thoughts on this? How can I find the stray files that are causeing this?

My tablet only boots in TWRP v2.2.2.1
I've flashed at least 5 different images in fastboot using at least 5 different methods. Every time I think I make any progress, I reboot my nabi2 and it reboots directly to TWRP. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to flash a backup of 1.9.37 or just a program thru install? I know that if you wipe system and then flash another backup, if the backup is no good, twrp will not boot system but go right back to twrp. That is a safety setting, cause if it booted with no system installed you would most likely have a bricked device. That happened in the early days of Twrp, so they added the safety setting. If you flashed a backup, how long did it take, a good backup or image will take 10+ minutes, a bad 1 will say done in 1-2 minutes or less.
Might help if we had a little information about what you where doing.

I tried flashing multiple backups and they all go to twrp. The backups only took a minute or 2.

Ok your backups are all bad, that's why it finishes so quick and won't boot out of TWRP recovery. You will have to download a image file and get it into the TWRP folder on your sdcard. You will have to download it on your computer unrar it and name the folder something like unrooted 1.9.37 and transfer it to your micro sdcard. Then put micro sdcard back in tablet. In TWRP recovery, you will have to go into Advanced>File Manager. In file Manager, you will have to click on external sdcard and copy the file from there back to sdcard>TWRP>backups>serial#>unrooted 1.9.37 it doesn't matter what the folder name is that you put in the serial# folder but the all the others are as named and your new folder HAS TO BE IN THE SERIAL# FOLDER, or Restore will not see it. When that is done go back to main menu and Restore, you should see your new folder, choose it and swipe to restore. This should take 10+ minutes. You should be able to reboot to system then.

I'm having the same issue since the gapps update, where the Nabi shuts itself down while charging. Sometimes it can be a real pain to reboot after it does this.

i cant delete /vendor/apps always tells me (app can not be deleted) thats in es file explorer the others say its deleted but its still there???

In es go to the menu where you turn on root explorer and tap the words 'root explorer' then a menu will pop up, tap mount r/w and then set /system to rw. You then should be able to delete the files. After you're done deleting set system back to read-only.
