Root and Unlock Bootloader - Verizon HTC One (M8)

ADB is up and running.
Stuck at WeakSauce and SuperSU.
WeakSauce says it was successful. SuperSU says root failed.
Not sure if I missed something. Does it only work with older versions?
I did follow the trouble shooting steps of uninstalling and re-installing in the exact order.
Should I keep trying that?
UPDATE - Root Checker shows I have root access.
SuperSU keeps stating failed.
Thanks.

If Weaksauce says you're rooted, I would skip SuperSU for now and go straight in to Firewater.
Do it exactly like they say and you will be S-off and ready to install a custom recovery and SuperSU.

Ran Firewater and it says nothing can be done. I'll try again later.

Haven't even picked up my m8 yet but I know I've had similar issues with my m7 as well as my DNA... Turn off your virus scanner and firewall and run again.. try to stop as many processes as possible before attempting again.. worth a shot at least

If you follow all instructions and have taken into consideration all trouble the shooting then you may have a device which requires you use the sunshine apk. Sunshine is made by the same devs that created firewater but costs $25 after completed. http://theroot.ninja
If by chance you are curious about why one works and not the other there are many threads that have been discussing this topic. One in which jcase (Dev) has take the time to post a few comments.

[Q] Tested rooting with Gingerbreak 1.2 but it doesn't work

Hiya - I would have posted this as a reply in the "Root the OTA updated RUU with gingerbreak thread" here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057104
But unfortunately things have changed here recently and since I have < 10 posts I can't reply in that thread directly, so I'll go ahead and discuss my findings in here.
I returned to stock a while ago because I didn't like the radio, gps and sound differences. I like the stock ROM fine enough, but I would like root on my phone to remove the ATT bloat, use Titanium Backup, etc.
Since I rooted my phone a while ago, I already had S-OFF, so that wasn't a problem. I received the OTA update a while ago. Today I used gingerbreak 1.2 (via adb push) to root the phone. The rooting went well - Superuser was installed. I went ahead and installed busybox and that seems to have worked, but the root itself isn't stable.
For instance, every time I try to run Titanium Backup and it asks Superuser for permission, Superuser crashes.
I also get the same result when I run term emulator and attempt to issue a simple SU command:
"the application Superuser (process com.noshufou.android.su) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
So it doesn't seem like this method is going to work so well for me after all in order to achieve my goal of a stock rom with no bloat. Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, is there a workaround? I don't assume so because I don't see one in the thread, but still I thought it prudent to bring this to your attention.
Thanks!

I did see that once, open the superuser.apk then pen the app again as a temp workaround, once they get permission they tend to work. If it persists, I believe you can update the su binaries and that should resolve it. I think it has to do with the version of su that gingerbreak installs. Someone who has dealt with this problem could probably better answer it, but this may help.

I did that and SU still crashes whenever an application asks for root access or su is invoked from terminal. I even installed the latest superuser binary from the market.
The bonus is that I can at least enter custom APN settings, so that's nice.

Now that sounds like the recovery.img has been corrupted. Even without root, if recovery.img is fine it will boot cwm. I hate to say it, but I would RUU to stock and start the process over, and verify that you have CWM before proceeding, as my method does not have a recovery.img to flash.
The other option would be to try attn1's pd98img.zip of the Inspire 1.84 RUU in the dev section, that may also work, then let you flash CWM recovery from ROM Manager.

(Q) Can't root/s-off my gf's M8!

I had no problems rooting and getting s-off on my M8 months ago when the exploit was released. I used the weaksauce/firewater method. Now when I try to do the same thing to my gf's M8 it won't work. It's running stock 4.4.2. any ideas? I run weaksauce -> download/run supersu -> try to update the binaries but it keeps saying installation failed. need help! thanks

Reboot your phone. Wait for a pop up message that shows phone is rooted then run super su? Have you downloaded any rooted apps like root explorer? Reason I asked is because once you run the app supoeruser should pop up.

You're getting stuck on weaksauce? Try to uninstall everything, reboot, then re-download weaksauce and install again. Sometimes the root won't apply correctly.
If firewater doesn't work, you might have to use sunshine.

It just takes a couple minutes to reroot after every reboot. And where in the instructions are you seeing to download and run supersu? Don't do that.

I had the same issue when I first installed weaksauce. It was weird, root checker said I was rooted, but weaksauce would not reroot when I rebooted my device. I just downloaded a fresh copy and ran it again, and it worked perfectly the second time.

Rooting my m8 on 4.4.3

Okay I'm getting tired of trying these methods and them not working. Weaksauce does not work. I messaged jcase personally and he directed me to a website where I downloaded an apk called sunshine. He said it's the only method that works for 4.4.3. I open the app and hit okay, then temproot, to gain root. Already having supersu installed, a pop up comes up asking me to grant root. I grant it. Then I try firewater and it tells me SU or FU. Basically saying my device is not rooted. What am I doing wrong??? I have my ADB set up and working properly, I have all the files in the right places. What do I need to do? I don't understand.

Firewater does not support 4.4.3. You would need to use sunshine in order to gain s-off/unlock and then you will be able to install a custom recovery and then root your device using SuperSU zip file. It will cost $25 to use sunshine, but well worth it and the only way that I know of to have root on 4.4.3.

I just did this on 4.4.3 and I'm new to this but here's what I did:
1. Install and run SunShine to gain s-off/unlock. Did you pay for SunShine? It costs $25 and if you did not pay then you did not complete the process.
2. Install TWRP by following the directions on their webiste. I used the Fastboot Method.
3. Once in TWRP it will ask you if you want to root and install SuperSU.
Just running SunShine does not permanently root your phone.
I haven't paid for it yet. I won't be able to until I get paid next week:/ so I guess I'll just have to wait. Thank you both for your replies. So in other words, that app will s off the phone and unlock the bootloader without even having to plug it in to my pc?

That's correct, nothing needed from your PC until you're ready to install a custom recovery (ie: TWRP). Super easy and well worth the $25! Just make sure you're plugged into a power source.

Root with WeakSauce, then find Firewater to unlock that thing immediately. After you're unlocked, then use the RUU running around here to update.

No harm but honestly, don't you think somebody has posted this somewhere on a development forum for such a popular device. Go to the HTC one m8 general forum and then look at the posts. Somebody has completed a thread specifically detailing how to root, s-off, bootloader unlock, and flash a custom recovery.

Uninstall supersu and weaksauce, then install weaksauce then install supersu but DO NOT OPEN SUPERSU ever not until after your done with firewater. When your phone reboots while using firewater right after android loads open the weaksauce app and make sure it shows you have root access. This is where it usually fails because weaksauce is not giving root access during the use of firewater, when you manually open weaksauce it will give root access then firewater will work.

Exactly that was what I listed lol. Because sometimes weaksauce will not give root access and if it does not then trying the rest of firewater will not work, you open weaksauce and make sure it confirms you have root access otherwise reboot phone and start over just never open supersu until after firewater has given you s-off. This is where many people cant get firewater to work because they are assuming weaksauce gave them root and it may take weaksauce a while to give root access so you need to open weaksauce then finish with the steps on firewater. It took me a few m8's to figure out but it really makes a lot of sense.
disable OTA -prior to root?
Been looking around for a solid answer to this and haven't been able to find one. Since this thread is essentially what I am looking to do (get M8 now, hope it still has 4.4.3 or lower) and unlock and root prior to taking any OTA, figured I would ask here as it very much related to the OP.
Is there a way to disable the OTA update prior to being rooted? I'll need to turn on the phone after I receive it and it will go through the normal setup so I can check the OS version prior to running any unlock/root method. During this time I am sure VZW will try and push the OTA. I know I can 'postpone' the install (usually) but wasn't sure if there was a better, more permanent way to lock out the OTA from happening just to be safe.
Thanks

The ota you can chose to not install it just dont hit install and dont mess with the update at all, and try firewater but from what I have seen posted most cant get it to work any more, my advice is try a few times and look at the tips listed in various posts but be prepared to have to use sunshine. Its $25 but if you have to use it then you have to use it, otherwise you will just be wasting your time where you could be enjoying the benefits of s-off. Either that or sell it and go with at&t or tmobile and use htc dev for free and live fine with s-on, those are pretty much your only choices, good luck and enjoy when your unlocked.

That is exactly what I did. Could not get Firewater to work, so went with Sunshine and worked like a charm. I now have TWRP and SuperSU installed and ready to go.
One question though - the OTA file did get downloaded and it was big...... anyone know where that file gets downloaded to so I can delete it to free up space? Been searching on the phone and online and can't find a good answer (it isn't in cache).

You did look in download on your internal memory right ? You could just do a full wipe of everything except ext sd card, then just make sure everything except ext sd is selected, or take sd out. Just have your rom of choice on your sd card ie mine would be viperone 3.1.0 lol. Another thing to get a full wipe make sure everything is mounted in the twrp mount settings.
If my suggestions help you please hit the thanks option at the bottom left of my post please.

Question about Sunshine

I just got an HTC One M8 today and I want to get it to s off and install CyanogenMod. I'm on the 4.4.4 build and I have root with Sunshine but when I grant it root and it does the compatibility check it says "At this time, SunShine cannot work on your phone"
Is there a fix for this or do I have to wait for Sunshine 3?

I would give it a couple more tries. When I did mine it took me like 3 tries as it kept failing. I had to reboot and run it again. Are you running sunshine while you have root access with weaksauce2 ? I think you need to be and open weaksauce2 to make sure it shows you have root access. And if it reboots then does nothing for a whiles try opening weaksauce2 and see if that lets it work. I would say give it a couple more tries it cant hurt but may help.

It worked for me, current Sunshine...
I have M8 that came with 4.4.4 ... After days of research I finally just tried WeakSauce2 (It worked, gained temp root) ... Make sure you are using WeakSauce2 and not the original.
Then reluctantly, I tried Sunshine and it said it wouldn't work, as you stated. But I tried anyway. ... And it worked FIRST TRY.
I hate the fact that they charge (and charge so much) for it, but it was one of those I'm determined type things... I really hope the that trend of charging so much doesn't catch on. I'm all for donate or a couple of bucks but dammnnn come on... It's supposed to be for fun and everything, not to make thousands of dollars...
Anyways, the current sunshine worked for me, on 4.4.4 , and yes I am sure It was 4.4.4 KitKat and not 4.4.3 ....
Good luck.
My M8 is coming Friday. Do I go straight to Sunshine or do I need to Weaksauce2 first. I thought Weaksauce was now part of sunshine.
Thanks.

Like I said, I first only used WeakSauce2. I rebooted the phone several times just playing with the phone and re-ran weaksauce2 several times also (just playing, testing root, etc... ) - Days later I finally decided to just try Sunshine one night. I left Weaksuace2 running, ran Sunshine, and it worked.
I don't know if it is 'baked in' or not, but this was my experience.

Running weaksauce isn't needed. I'd try sunshine first as soon as you boot up your phone, if it doesn't work weaksauce may allow it to work after running it.
No Joy
Phone came with 4.4.4. Tried Sunshine. Failed. Weaksauce2 gives TempRoot. Weaksauce2 plus Sunshine fails. Manually installed SU. Kept screwing around and ran Flashify to TWRP. Phone booted to a scary red triangle. After awhile booted normally. Decided to start over and did a factory reset.
Did learn I didn't need a SIM Cutter or a trip to Verizon for a Nano SIM. It came with a VZW SIM and VZW has an online app to activate a replacement phone. Enter MEI, SIM ID, they text a code, you enter it, BAM, your done.
Not sure where to go from here. I'd pay way more than $25 for root. Really surprised this phone came from Amazon with 4.4.4. Always been able to get root before locked out. Missing my rooted S3 already other than it was old and slow..
All I really want is TiBu and Tether. Can I do that with just Weaksauce2 TempRoot? Does Freezing "Updater" block further updates so I can deny them until safe?
Thanks

I'm talking out of my @SS right now, but can you Unmount filesystem and then Remount as Read-Write while you have temp root, and then try Sunshine ? Im not sure that would make any difference at all, but If I was stuck I would try at least ...
Could you also use a Firewall and program like Autostarts to block and disable updater as well as disable it ? Again, I don't know, just saying...

Thanks

Freezing updater would probably stop further updates, but you may want to take it if the next version of sunshine will work on it.
You just need to wait for the next version of sunshine to come out. Jcase and beaups want to wait for the lollipop release so the next version of sunshine will work on it. You did about all you could do for now, so you just have to wait for the update.

No. With s-on write protection is enabled on /system. Any changes you make will revert on reboot.
