[Q] AT&T HTC One X ROM & Kernel Problem - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi guys,
I'm newbie about android and please do not be angry to me for this question. I was read lots of topics from xda and another forums but I can't find anything.
I have AT&T HTC One X and i was happy with my phone. Maybe one year ago I rooted my phone and install ATT Stock Root - 3.18.502.6 - JB 4.1.1.zip. So, i followed instructions from xda's web site and everything was fine.
Last two weeks my phone starts to restarts it self. So, I decide to install everything again and open my phone in recovery mode with TWRP and wipe all data. (I don't have any backup of my original data)
I have TRWP's 2.7.1.0 version and I tried to install ATT Stock Root - 3.18.502.6 - JB 4.1.1.zip because I install it one year ago and it works fine. It installs fine but when I press restart my phone stuck at Quietly Brilliant screen and after 2 minutes my phone restarts it self.
Also I can't s-off my phone. I have unlock code bin and I applied it to my phone but something was wrong.
So please can any one help me please. I don't know why my phone acts like that.
Thanks in advance.

Ok so I know your a newbie but do you know your firmware is way out of date? We now have firmware for at&t that is at least 4 realises older than the current. I would say upgrade to a new ROM and firmware. If you don't wish to upgrade I have to ask what kernel you are using?

What he said. Also, did you flash the boot.img from the rom zip via fastboot? As you are s-on, you must perform that additional step.

I suggest he reads timaaas thread. Sounds to me like he should run a ruu to which he can still obtain s off.

Well thanks for suggestions, but I don't know what is the sequence for installing new firmware, rom and kernel. Could you guys please explain the it.

No, no, no! He can't run an RUU while s-on because it'll brick his phone. I know you mean well but you need to increase your own knowledge before you can start giving advice here, I've seen at least a few times where you've given advice that would result in a brick. I'm sure you don't want that on your conscience.

You more than likely only needed to flash the boot.img from the ROM zip by fastboot. Flash the ROM, then flash the boot.img, and your phone should boot up. Once you're all booted you need to get s-off. Look in my guide thread in my signature for instructions.

[Q] HTC Sensation: Phone ON, but screen BLANK after Android 2.3.4 OTA update!

Hi all,
I got the Android 2.3.4 OTA update, downloaded and installed it. The Sensation switched on right after update. The HTC boot screen came up, the boot-up sound played, AND THE SCREEN WENT BLANK!!
Now, I know the phone is actually ON, because I can call it from another phone and it rings. Also, the regular gesture on the screen to answer a call works too, but still, nothing shows on the display.. it's totally BLANK..
How can i solve this issue?? Thanks in advance
Try flashing a RUU again, there's a thread with all available RUUs here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
If you have a Tmobile Sensation then select TMOUS and open it after it downloads, and follow instructions. If it doesn't work, you should put the warranty to use if it has warranty.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Just wanted to note to you that my phone has never been rooted or has never had any custom firmware or any such thing done. This was the only OS update i've done since i bought it. Other than that, only tiny apps and games have been installed.
Also, the phone is not locked to any network.
Does your instruction still apply? if so, please let me know the way ahead. Thanks again

Yes, the RUU is a file that you open and it's like an OTA update but for computer, something like that. I have a Tmobile Sensation and I flashed this one:
RUU_Pyramid_TMOUS_1.29.531.2_Radio_10.42.9007.00P_10.11.9007.15_M_release_193714_signed
It's the latest leaked RUU I think, and it's the same version that came with my phone when I got it. I used it to get S-ON too after S-Off and rooting. There's a tutorial for that too here if you want to root. Let me know how it works.

Yea, that's the thing, my friend. I don't want to do anything like rooting/unrooting etc. etc. all i want is my phone's screen to start working.
before the 2.3.4 OTA update, I had Android 2.3.3 on my phone. is there any way to go back to that version of Android?
You not rooting/unrooting. You're just flashing the stock ROM back onto the phone. See it as reformating a PC hard drive for a clean installation. You will lose all data, mind

aah ic.. apologies for my stupid questions.. i'me truly a newbie when it comes to stuff like this..
can you please give me directions on which RUU to choose and how to go about doing the installation? umm... please...? *innocent eyes*
Haven't tried taking the battery out yet..? First thing I would do
Hi Tirozz,
Yea i've done all of that:
- took off battery, put it in after 30 seconds, switched it on
- did hard reset by going into that special mode by pressing power and volume down
- took off memory card and switched on
still nothing..
MicroWise, there is a way to get back to Android 2.3.3. Download this RUU if you have a Tmobile Sensation:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/cb7...00P_10.11.9007.15_M_release_193714_signed.exe
Open it in your Windows PC and follow the instructions, then you'll have the stock Android 2.3.3 back again.
If you don't have the TMobile one, download the corresponding one from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
Let me know how it goes.
I had the same problem,
& i solve it by installing the previous ROM & don't flash the update
install your compatible Rom form the thread above,

Thanks for the instructions, KCuadrado. And again, i'm very sorry for being an absolute idiot in this area and bugging you all with it..
my sensation is not a Tmobile.. infact its not tied to ANY operators.. and doesn't have any operator logos on it either.. it is not network locked.. so which RUU do i use from there?
I don't know how to help you now :/
Check the RUU forum thread and ask if someone has a RUU for your HTC. Or you can try rooting and getting SuperCID so you can flash any RUU file, but it's easier to ask on the forum thread for your compatible RUU file.
Alright, Thanks a lot, dude.
I shall go over there

What is the model of your phone and what region are you in? I assume it's an XE or XL, not 4g. I will try to help you.. are you at all familiar with adb? What does it say on the screen of the phone when you press the vol- and power power? Can you take a photo and upload it?

so do i have to go back to stock recovery?? how to do that??? and i have s-off and rooted stock rom thx

A little bit of help please

So I just got my sensation today from a friend.
It used to be rooted, but he said he unrooted it.
I just checked hboot and it says at the top "unlock" and s-off.
But I do not have root privileges .
A little help trying to figure out what's going on please
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
So how do u know ur device is not rooted?
If it says s-off, you're pretty much good to go on installing a custom ROM.
Is there a custom recovery installed? That will be the other thing you'd need.
As far as the ROM you're already using, you can install a non rooted ROM on an s-off phone.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
Rooted means the ROM is rooted.
S-Off means the phone itself is 'rooted' (I'm mixing up terminology here to make the explanation simple.)
So you have a phone that you can do anything to. If you install a custom ROM the ROM itself will be rooted, meaning it'll come with Superuser and full root access to the ROM files.
If you have a non rooted ROM on the phone now, you will only be able to flash a new ROM via recovery since you won't be able to run an app like ClockworkMod from the non rooted ROM. But that's no big deal. It just means you'll have to download the ROM you want, copy it to the SD card, and install it via the very easy to use recovery module. And I'd bet heavily that the recovery version on your phone is ClockworkMod and not the stock, so it'll be super easy.
If not, there are still yet other options.
Ok that makes sense.
I just double checked and I'm currently not rooted.
I booted into recovery and I'm current using
4ext 1.0.0.3 beta 7

You are golden.
4ext is a recovery that will let you flash ROMs. With S=Off you can flash most anything you like. If you want to flash an ICS ROM you'll have to upgrade the firmware first (unless it's already been done.)
There are easy to follow guides in the forum on how to do that. Pay attention to the parts about being SuperCID first (It's easy. Just pay attention to it)
For a regular Gingerbread ROM just download the one you want, put it on the SD Card, enter 4ext recovery and flash it. Should take about 2 minutes to set up and about 10 minutes to install the customer ROM after you start the recovery process (10 minutes of the ROM loading. Not 10 minutes of you doing anything. You can go eat a sandwich while the recovery installs the ROM)
If you need any assistance with using 4ext ask for it. (I've never used it so I can't talk you through it. I've only used clockwork) There are plenty of people here who know exactly what the step by step action is to make sure you get it right.

It sounds like you don't have a ROM loaded. The same thing happened to me after I upgraded the firmware. (Which has been done to your phone based on the info you provided) The firmware worked, but it had no ROM to boot into.
A quick re flashing of the ROM through the recovery and everything was back to normal.
With S-On though, I'm not sure you can flash a ROM. can't hurt to try it though. You're not going to make your problem worse.
I'm pretty sure I've already tried that, but I'll have a go again. Thanks for the help.

You need to flash the Clockwork recovery. You can do that by creating a PM58IMG.ZIP file with the clockwork recovery image and putting it on the root of your SD Card and running it as an update.
Or the much simpler way (Meaning fewer extra steps) is to use 4ext this one time to install a custom ROM, boot up into you rnow working phone and download ClockworkMod from the market and let ClockworkMod flash itself as the new recovery.
You might have to install Google Apps separately to get access to the market. That's dependent on the ROM. Some have it prepackaged. Some don't.
You won't have to go back and reinstall the ROM or anything after flashing the new recovery through the ClockworkMod app. Everything will work fine even though you installed it using 4ext.
Thanks a lot bro.
Question.
Can I now, just download clockwork from the market and flash it over the recovery I have now?

No. Not if the ROM you have installed isn't rooted.
Clockwork needs Superuser access to do anything. So it wouldn't be able to function without root.
There's nothing wrong with 4ext. It'll work just fine to boot up once even if you strongly prefer Clockwork.
(Also....not to be greedy, but I wouldn't complain if you hit the thanks button! )

On the plus side it's not worthless. It has value on eBay as a bricked device for parts.
Also, there's a thread around here somewhere called something like "Think you bricked your device? Check here first"
Check in there for other solutions. (That thread might be for the MyTouch 4G. I just switched phones so I've got all my threads between the forums mixed up in my head.)

Yeah that's a thing. Poor build quality at the factory.
From the poll that's up around here somewhere your odds of getting a dusty screen are about 50/50.
You can find that same thread in any forum for any HTC device on XDA. It's poor quality control by HTC.
You can tear the phone apart and wipe it down....but that obviously has a lot of other risks. Unless the dust is so bad it physically blocks the light from the screen from showing through....learn to like it.
Well I did the tear down and hinge fix for the g2.
Can you point me to the direction to what you have said.
Thanks bro

That'll give you everything you want to know.
Skip the part about obtaining S-Off since you've already go that. Do the rest of the stuff. (Step 2 in that guide is how to get Clockwork recovery the PM58IMG way. It just doesn't call it Clockwork.)
The first thing you need to do though is pick which of the ROMs you want from the 900 threads in the development section.

PLEASE HELP!!! My HTC One X is completely messed up and i would like some help**

Hello everybody i am posting because my One X is messed up. I bought the phone from radio shack and i love it. When i first bought it i rooted it and then downloaded fun root apps like titanium backup, and set cpu. I heard about custom roms and i wanted to try one. So i followed the instructions given on the website. Im sorry i dont remember what website it was that i downloaded it from. So i downloaded Clockworkmod from play store and installed it on my phone. Then copied the rom to my sd card. I tried to flash is but nothing would happen. So i tried to boot into recovery mode and i woould get a legal actions page, then my bootloader would say ***tampered*** ***locked*** ***security warning***. So then i tried to unlock my boot loader via htc dev and i got the error 160 mid not allowed. So i wanted to unroot and restore so i deleted supersu and the su files from my phone and i used root checker to check if unrooted. it said *not properly rooted*. But my phone can still view and download root apps.
Then i tried to restore my phone to stock, but when i pressed factory reset i would get the same legal actions page and my boot loader would say *tampered* *locked* *security warning*. And my att software update doesnt work. when i press on it it says htc dm has stopped and after that it does nothing when i press the button. And many apps close unsuspectingly. I would like to completely revert my phone to stock so i can start over again. thank you.
I have the HTC One X dual core usa version
i bought it at radio shack
It is on AT&T
Sounds like you might have tried to install a rom for the international version. Be thankful it didn't work.
You can't unlock via htcdev without changing your CID because AT&T is blocking it.
The version of CWM in the Play Store (ROM Manager?) is not supported for this phone and will not work.
To restore to stock, you need to flash the RUU for your current version. Check your software version in Settings.
This may come across as rude but you are obviously aware of XDAs existence since you are posting here, why on earth would you do anything to your phone without FIRST checking XDA to make sure it's kosher? I see way too many threads like this and it boggles my mind.
You guys don't want to come to XDA for help with your ROMs and mods, but as soon as you screw something up you come running to us for assistance.

First, you need to do A LOT more reading before you try to unlock your bootloader and flash ROMs. You missed a ton of steps and it is pretty clear you didn't do your homework. I am not trying to be rude, but trying to save you from ruining your phone.
Check what firmware you have. I assume 1.85 if you have root, but please check. If you want to be able to re-root your phone do not use the 2.20 RUU! Go download the RUU . Follow the instructions and run the RUU to return your phone to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238 (1.85 RUU)
You can then start the process over with rooting and unlocking. You must have SuperCID before you can unlock your bootloader. Use TWRP and not CWR because it is not supported on the AT&T One X. You must NEVER try installing a ROM meant for the international version. (Stay in this section of the forum!) Once you root and unlock, you will not be able to download OTAs from HTC.

thankyou so much!! that was such a stupid mistake. The indian people making the videos i was watching for instructions should have been a dead giveaway that it was for the international version!! again thank you so much. so where can i download RUU and instructions. and if you can what would be the best way to root and unlock bootloader for my version of the phone?

I edited my reply and included two links. First is to the 1.85 RUU. Make sure you don't have 2.20 by going to Settings -> About -> Software Information and look at Software Number. As long as you don't have 2.20, download that RUU, plug your phone in, and run it. IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING! so make sure to back up the contents of your SD card first.
The second link is to the AT&T One X resource Roll-up. Everything you need to root/unlock/rom will be in there.
The steps are in this order:
1. Root using the 1.85 root
2. Get SuperCID
3. Go to HTCDev.com to get unlock token, flash unlock token, unlock bootloader
4. Flash recovery (TWRP)
5. Flash ROM
Make sure you read ALL of the instructions first!! And I would recommend CleanROM once you get that far.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you mess up your phone.

Good point! I just automatically do that every time I flash a rom so I always forget to include that as an additional step. But that will save a lot of time if anything goes wrong.

Although the answer is already in this thread, if I were you, I would take this time to use the search and find out what an RUU is and what it does. You are going to use them many times in the future so might as well know.

You should see all the skyrocket users coming to the i777 forums saying they bricked and have no idea why... Probably by flashing a rom for the wrong phone....

As long as you flashed 1.85 then the root script will work. You may have to manually set the day ahead and try again a few times. Read the thread. Search the thread. Your answers are probably in there.

So you run the one click method, it tells you to try to run the AT&T software update, and your phone does nothing? That is what is happening?

[Q] HTC ONE X ATT stuck!! help Please!!

I have recently tried to flash my htc one x att android version 4.1.1 to the latest cyanogenmod 10.1. After i flashed it, i rebooted my device and got stuck in the htc logo. So i tried to restart it, even tried to factory reset. My phone doesnt even have a rom on it, so i cant do anything. my bootloader is unlocked and i am S-ON. I have TWRP recovery installed though. I tried to flash multiple roms, but cmd just says cannot load "file name".img. I cant flash anything right now. Please help, thank you!!
What firmware and hboot versions are you on? And where are you downloading the ROMs?

Also, you mentioned command said "cannot load filename.img" which seems weird, ROMs are in a zip format. Exactly how are you trying to flash the ROM?
And, did you factory reset in bootloader? If you did you've corrupted your sd card/internal storage and you'll need to format it.

Ok, firstly it looks like you're downloading the ROM for the wrong device. M7 is not your phone, your phone is Evita. So that's your first mistake. Find Evita and download that.
To format your sd card, go into recovery, then select mount, connect your phone to the pc, and mount usb storage. Now using Windows you need to go to my computer or device manager, find the drive that popped up when you mounted, and format it to fat32 format.
Next, fastboot flash boot boot.img does not flash a ROM, it only flashes the boot.img. You need to flash the ROM through recovery. First extract the boot.img from the ROM on your pc and put it in your fastboot folder on your pc. Then copy the entire ROM zip to your phone. Now you can flash the ROM through recovery, then reboot to bootloader and flash the boot.img using fastboot.

Dude u gotta read a lil more before u just jump in and start messing up your phone first download a ROM for evita. Then make a copy of the boot image of the ROM, and place this in the same folder that your fastboot is in. Then transfer the ROM file to your phone. In recovery wipe data and system, reboot to bootloader, Flash the boot image in fast boot. Then after u do this Reboot to recovery again and install ROM file and gapps. Wipe cache and ur done

naw your phone will work with them, the version of the phone doesnt matter unless you had an older version. In this case if yu had an older version then yeah, some of the newer nighlies wouldnt work for you. But No worries dude ur on the newer version, as long as its the right rom for the phone Evita they will work. For now I recommend trying out the newest cyanogenmod nightly till you get a lil more comfortable with what ur doing. Or if you want a sense rom the sense 5 imagio rom is my personal favorite

Yes, this is my first android phone. im downloading http://goo.im/devs/Cory/evita/cm10-1/cm-10.1-20130610-UNOFFICIAL-evita.zip. it says 2 hours left lol so im going to restart the computer and erase cache. And i hate this new user thing, i have to wait 5 minutes to post this.

SIM unlock didn't work, factory reset wiped everything, phone doesn't boot.

But wait, there's more.
I just exchanged an Xperia S for this HTC One S in excellent condition. It was already bootloader unloked, has TWRP only that it was sim locked. I tried the unlock.sh script (both from terminal emulator, and root explorer) then manually getting the UN_lock_code and subtracting the reversed 7 digits from the IMEI (with the added one), and even the automated app. The script kept running and never show the unlock code, and the one I got using this method wasn't accepted.
Then I thought I should to a factory reset and try again. So I reboot to bootloader, chose factory reset and now everything is wiped. No OS installed so I can't boot, TWRP won't mount USB storage so I can' flash any other rom.
Please help.

Knowing that it is C2 will prevent you from flashing a ROM that isn't compatible with your phone. From experience, I'd go with PAC Rom. It has a ton of features, and should allow you to do anything you want. As far as SIM unlocking, shouldn't you be S-Off first?
And you formatted the phone via Windows? I've never heard of such a thing, never mind it actually fixing a problem.
But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And your issue seems to be resolved for the most part. Regarding booting, that is.

I'm not sure, tbh, do I? But if I do, that's what I'll do first, however, I don't recall reading anywhere S-OFF being a prerequisite to sim unlocking.

Well yeah... oddly enough... I formatted the phone's internal storage via windows and then I was able to mount it as USB storage from recovery.
further edit: I managed to flash a rom and boot the phone.
For the sake of trying everything, I would s-off first. The easiest way is from stock right after running an RUU, without a custom recovery, No SU or busybox, and a locked bootloader. Moonshine worked for me after trying all the other methods.
I personally love the Viper ROMS. I only wish they would have kept updating the ones for the ONE S and slammed kitkat into it. It would be my daily driver. I use a ville with dirty unicorn 4.4. It's my daily driver.
Awesome that you got it mounted. Maybe that forced the drivers to reinstall properly. Did you check for fastboot and ADB functionality and visibility from the computer? You'll need both of those before attempting s-off.

How about ViperSC2? Will that do?
I'm not sure, tbh, do I? But if I do, that's what I'll do first, however, I don't recall reading anywhere S-OFF being a prerequisite to sim unlocking.
Well yeah... oddly enough... I formatted the phone's internal storage via windows and then I was able to mount it as USB storage from recovery.
further edit: I managed to flash a rom and boot the phone.

adb devices lists the phone, however fastboot devices does not... it keeps waiting for device. I tried this fix for windows 8.1 but I can't get it to take the modded drivers. It says it finds them but can't install because the system supposedly cannot find the file.
That seems to be an issue with Windows 8.1. It also seems to be the only OS affecting fastboot. There is a file I used to get all of my drivers working properly, with ADB and fastboot. Fastboot is required with any S-Off attempt. I'll go scope out the file and return here.

Try this! This should work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
This is what I used last night to reinstall my drivers with working ADB and Fastboot. It also comes with a picture guide on how to fix the device detection. It's fast, easy, lightweight, and best of all, it works!
Your help is really appreciated.
I already tried this fix as well but I get the same error message. Damn system can't seem to find the file when I am pointing it to it...
I need to get some sleep now, will try more tomorrow.
Tried that and I still can't get fastboot devices to enumerate my device. Pfffft.

No sweat. I've got nothing going on later, so I'll do some research for ya! Night
OK, I managed to get fastboot working, but not S-OFF. Moonshine doesn't work, it keeps saying something needs to be fixed and that I need to read, haha funny. Thing is I followed the exact procedure and met all the prerequisites except for being on a stock ROM.
Currently I am running ViperS C2 5.1.0 baseband 16.22.30.03U_16.11.20.24_M, build number 3.19.401.101. I tried a couple RUUs but none worked. Which am I to use? What next?

What is your carrier and CID? MAybe I have a RUU downloaded. I tend to grab them all. 2tb space, plus tons of cloud storage.
[EDIT] I also posted a thread on how to s-off, if that helps. I'll still look for the appropriate RUU.

CID: HTC__032 And when you ask about my carrier do you mean the one I want to use? It's Vodafone Romania and so far I'm sure the phone works with Orange Romania. Other networks I haven't tried.

I found this repository with some RUU. The last one is the most recent and the closest to your radio version. Reverting flashing this RUU should update your radio to match it. Once stock, you should have the ability to s-off and will have a new kernel. Have you tried flashing the kernel through fastboot?

If you mean this one then I tried that and eventually it gives error 131 CUSTOMER ID ERROR and saying it cannot update my device.

Was your bootloader UNLOCKED when you tried that update? Because RUU require that the bootloader be LOCKED before they have the ability to flash.
fastboot oem lock
if you didn't know.
Other than that, I'm at a loss. Until you find the appropriate RUU i guess

Nope. Bootloader is Relocked.
Now I'm facing another problem. I flashed TWRP via WinDroid HTC ONE S Toolkit and now, when I chose recovery from HBOOT, I get a red triangle with an exclamation mark.
edit: the red triangle was due to flashing TWRP on a locked bootloader. What I plan to do do now is flash this stock rom and try getting S-OFF and eventually sim unlock from there.
*fingers crossed*
further edit: apparently my cid is not supported by this rom.

You will have to SuperCID then. That requires S-Off most of the time. Back to stock it seems. The RUU hunt continues. I've been looking for you, just to see if I stumble upon it.
[EDIT] http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2644607 TRY THE FIRST RUU HERE! This one is the same CID as your carrier. it may upgrade your radio and hboot.

PROGRESS!
I managed to get S-OFF. Do I try sim-unlocking now, or is there anything else I have to do first?
