S-Off - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I just got my replacement phone after a cracked screen. I am attempting to s-off and I'm unable to achieve it. I get this error...

I have done everything correctly and tried finding something online to help but with no success. If anyone has any ideas, it would be great.

If you can't get it to work use sunshine. It's 25 dollars but the only way. If you are following the right directions, have the proper drivers, and ask the other prerequisites, then you'll have to use it.

I would rather not pay twice for this since I did donate after it was achieved. I'm running on a mac and I don't believe there are any drivers for mac from htc. I also don't think I have been doing anything different from when I did it on my first phone.

Well getting it working or posting is your only option. If you are sure you're following the directions then posting is your last option before they lock it down for good

Yea, I guess I will have to do it by that. Kind of pissed but oh well. I tried a factory reset just to see and no good. Same spot and error it fails. Unless someone else has a suggestion, I'm going to hold off a little on the sunshine app. If no one has anything that might help, I will just use it. Thanks for all your help/responses.

I have seen others that listed recently that firewater still worked for them. While your using weaksause if you open your supersu does it keep saying it needs to update your binary then you hit continue and it fails then says reboot and try again but does this non stop ? If so maybe that could be the problem as it did that for me last week and I ended up submitting to the extortion and paying the $25 for sunshine. To me that is almost as bad as people that creat viruses then charge their victiims for the fix. If your supersu is doing that, maybe try downloading an older version of supersu off the net and installing it through an app like es file explorer, that would be of course after uninstalling your current version of supersu. I dont know but maybe you might be able to use superuser instead of supersu also if you have the same update binary issue I had.

There's no way firewater is going to work for you. What I would do is possibly get a hold of the developers, give them a receipt showing that you donated to them, and see if they will let you use sunshine without paying.
It has something to do with newer batches of M8's having slightly different hardware internals, which is causing unlocking variance. It won't be fixed because development is being poured into sunshine.

I tried using superuser and same thing. It needs to install the SU binary which always fails. Same with the current version of superSU. I tried running superSU 1.93, 1.94, and 2.00 with no luck of getting firewater to run correctly. IDK why this is happening as I have done this for 2 M8s with no problems. If anyone else has any ideas before I go ahead with sunshine, please don't hesitate to let me know.

You shouldn't be opening SuperSU at all after installing weak sauce. You just install weak sauce. Install SuperSU and continue on with firewater. Then when you ask for root in terminal make sure your phone is on so you can grant root. Should work.

I opened supersu and updated binaries right after I installed weaksauce. When I went to run Firewater, it worked for me the first time. Supersu is not the problem here, it's hardware variance with new batches of M8's.
If you're getting that fail message, you have to use sunshine. There is no way around it unless firewater is updated. Sunshine is the only method being updated to deal with this variance.

Maybe what you did but it's an unneeded step that's not part of the directions. I didn't do that and firewater worked first try for me as well.

I was just pointing it out just to show it did work with supersu being opened and updated before running firewater. Just helping out with the troubleshooting in case that was a potential issue.

Outside of the screens mine is a sharp by the way.. I wonder what the other internals are used that differ from one batch to another. Here's my thing if something was patched with an update or hardware changed causing the exploit not to work they found a way around it with sunshine and are now charging for their work. This makes perfect sense to me they put in the effort and work in order for us (who can't won't or don't know how)to unchain our devices. I can give you a long list of things I pay for that I don't take full advantage of but if I had to use sunshine it wouldnt be on that list. With that being said i still encourage anyone to try and use firewater first : )

[Q] Can't get S-OFF using Firewater Verizon HTC One M8

I've been trying to get S-Off for a few hours now by following the guide from rootjunkie. The phone is rooted with weaksauce but I cannot get firewater to work. When I run it, I get past where it says the first bottle is open and chugging... then it fails. I am following the steps correctly. First adb reboot, then wait 30 sec for root to activate, then continue the process. One thing that I have noticed is that after rebooting, when I'm waiting for root to activate, the phone disconnects and reconnects from my computer prompting the what choose what to do with device screens. Is this the problem? When the phone is connected to my pc under my computer i get a folder with the internal storage and sd card storage and another one with some verizon startup files. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it, all I want is to install the GPE Rom onto the phone. Thanks.

if we are able to fix this issue, it will be announced
bye bye.... sorry it didn't work out.
I thought I had seen some people stating that there was a patch released or something that made firewater unable to be used anymore. Haven't seen any official word of this, however people have used the other method and its worked. O believe it's called sunshine or something from the same developers, however it isn't a free method. Hopefully you can get this sorted out.

So you were trying to use Firewater. If you only need root Weaksauce should do the trick.
If you want S-off and permanent root and Firewater does not work, use Sunshine.
It'll cost you $25 but it's guaranteed to work and you'll be supporting future development!

Use sunshine, firewater is hit or miss with phones. Most people are having trouble with the updated version. It's $25 but it'll S-off your phone.
If root and soff is your goal... Agreed use sunshine to achieve and save some headache if your having issues at the same time supporting devs. Suggestion make sure you are following the steps outlined for firewater some people have still been able to use firewater after getting this message. They are either being impatient or not following the steps completely but again sunshine = no headache and dev support.
Same thing happening to me. Does anyone have any idea's. I don't have cash for sunshine at the moment but now I'm obsessing about this.

I re downloaded firewater and well everything else.
I literally just got s-off on mine 5 minutes ago using Firewater. It took me like ten tries. Try using the original micro usb the phone came with and if it doesn't work just unplug and try again. If that doesn't work 25$ for s-off is a great price for a sure thing. I hope you get it to work
When I got my phone a few weeks ago, it was up to date (firmware, hboot). I was able to gain s-off with the weaksauce/firewater method on the first go...what would cause firewater to not work on some VZW M8's?
I have pm'd the original files I used just over three months ago to several people requesting they try and get back to me but no one has responded. If anyone wants to try with my older files that is having issues with firewater pm me. Its just a thought.. The only other thing is that during the soff process a data connection is needing to be active. Something going on there?

Its possible that firewater was altered to no longer work so there would be no choice but to fork over the $25 and use sunshine. I guess the name could apply to your wallet as the sun shines in it when your forced to open it lol.

More about curiosity for me... I donate when I can and when it's due I am greatfull for what has been accomplished. $25 for soff is absolutely worth it and I have stated this but as much as it's hard to believe some people don't have an extra $25 to spend or can't arrange their finances to afford it. Would I have paid $25? Hell yeah but didn't have to because firewater was available. I agree... For those that are frustrated and are not able to use Firewater use sunshine quick and easy from what I have seen.
Can you post how to use sunshine? Thanks!

[Q] Recently Locked Bootloader, S-ON & Unrooted TAMPERED FLAG

So, I needed to return my phone back to stock recently (yes, HTC ONE M8 VERIZON).
Followed the directions posted here and all went perfect. Did have to purchase the "Universal Unroot" app to get SuperSU to uninstall.
About 20 minutes later, I get a notification stating there was an update from Verizon for OTA. I follow the onscreen prompts (figured, what does it matter, phone is stock again) after the install, I get a prompt stating the phone has been tampered (or something to that affect), so I load the bootloader and I see the *** TAMPERED *** flag on the top.
Is there anyway to get that removed now that I am no longer rooted, on S-OFF and my bootloader is locked again... Before turning the phone back in to Verizon?
Did you take a nandroid backup after rooting? If so just flash that. As for the ota, they are more trouble than they are worth most of the time. You can just grab the radio and firmware from it, posted in the development area, then flash nusense6 custom Rom to get 4.4.3. It's mostly stock.

I can't remember honestly.
I have 2 folders in my TWRP backup folder on ext_sd.
The problem right now is I am no longer rooted so, I am a bit stuck...
Correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't think there is a root method for Verizon 4.4.3... Is there?

thanks for the tip, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel, tomorrow I may be all good.
I can tell you 100% for sure that Sunshine does work with stock Verizon 4.4.3. They updated their thread with that information. You'll probably have to pay the 25$ (if you haven't already paid it before) but it is seriously the easiest S-OFF exploit there is. You just install the apk, open it, you get a prompt for payment either paypal or credit card, then it runs compatibility tests and then S-OFFs. You literally have to do nothing but install the apk. You don't even need root to use it. It does it all itself. After you run Sunshine, fastboot flash the latest TWRP, then flash SuperSU zip for root. (you can get that here: http://download.chainfire.eu/420/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip ) and your are good to go. Resetting the tampered flag may be difficult though. I'm sure someone has done it somewhere though.

Your prolly right. I would still try it tho. If you paid for Sunshine I would definitely contact Jcase on IRC.
alright, so jcase just worked his magic on my phone...
he typed some stuff, it worked, i'm happy...
i am now back to stock ROM, S-OFF, Unlocked bootloader, stock recovery & rooted
i followed the instructions here once jcase got me all sorted out with the above...
what i see becoming an issue is, I am on verizon software version 2.21.605.2...
all I want to do is get my phone to a state where I can return it to verizon from here...
I have read the 2 major write ups I have found on returning a phone to stock but, they are all for previous versions of verizon software...
anyone have any ideas/links to give a brother a hand?

Well they will work. You could use the RUU and return to 1.55.605.2. Doesn't matter what version you are on now, it will work. It will put you at almost 100% stock. Just re-lock the bootloader with a command and you can send it back.

So the question is, how can I root it and S off?

Root with WeakSauce, then find Firewater to unlock that thing immediately. After you're unlocked, then use the RUU running around here to update.

No harm but honestly, don't you think somebody has posted this somewhere on a development forum for such a popular device. Go to the HTC one m8 general forum and then look at the posts. Somebody has completed a thread specifically detailing how to root, s-off, bootloader unlock, and flash a custom recovery.

whelp, this sucks, firewater can not work on your device
no amount of reflashing, retrying, or ruuing will fix...
DO NOT COME TO IRC ASKING FOR UPDATES OR ETAS!!!!!!
if we are able to fix this issue, it will be announced

Uninstall supersu and weaksauce, then install weaksauce then install supersu but DO NOT OPEN SUPERSU ever not until after your done with firewater. When your phone reboots while using firewater right after android loads open the weaksauce app and make sure it shows you have root access. This is where it usually fails because weaksauce is not giving root access during the use of firewater, when you manually open weaksauce it will give root access then firewater will work.
tried and it did not work, this is driving me nuts
Just use the sunshine method if the others not working. I mean that's what I would do.

After adb reboot and before running the rest of the command open weaksauce. Then continue.

Exactly that was what I listed lol. Because sometimes weaksauce will not give root access and if it does not then trying the rest of firewater will not work, you open weaksauce and make sure it confirms you have root access otherwise reboot phone and start over just never open supersu until after firewater has given you s-off. This is where many people cant get firewater to work because they are assuming weaksauce gave them root and it may take weaksauce a while to give root access so you need to open weaksauce then finish with the steps on firewater. It took me a few m8's to figure out but it really makes a lot of sense.
disable OTA -prior to root?
Been looking around for a solid answer to this and haven't been able to find one. Since this thread is essentially what I am looking to do (get M8 now, hope it still has 4.4.3 or lower) and unlock and root prior to taking any OTA, figured I would ask here as it very much related to the OP.
Is there a way to disable the OTA update prior to being rooted? I'll need to turn on the phone after I receive it and it will go through the normal setup so I can check the OS version prior to running any unlock/root method. During this time I am sure VZW will try and push the OTA. I know I can 'postpone' the install (usually) but wasn't sure if there was a better, more permanent way to lock out the OTA from happening just to be safe.
Thanks

The ota you can chose to not install it just dont hit install and dont mess with the update at all, and try firewater but from what I have seen posted most cant get it to work any more, my advice is try a few times and look at the tips listed in various posts but be prepared to have to use sunshine. Its $25 but if you have to use it then you have to use it, otherwise you will just be wasting your time where you could be enjoying the benefits of s-off. Either that or sell it and go with at&t or tmobile and use htc dev for free and live fine with s-on, those are pretty much your only choices, good luck and enjoy when your unlocked.

That is exactly what I did. Could not get Firewater to work, so went with Sunshine and worked like a charm. I now have TWRP and SuperSU installed and ready to go.
One question though - the OTA file did get downloaded and it was big...... anyone know where that file gets downloaded to so I can delete it to free up space? Been searching on the phone and online and can't find a good answer (it isn't in cache).

You did look in download on your internal memory right ? You could just do a full wipe of everything except ext sd card, then just make sure everything except ext sd is selected, or take sd out. Just have your rom of choice on your sd card ie mine would be viperone 3.1.0 lol. Another thing to get a full wipe make sure everything is mounted in the twrp mount settings.
If my suggestions help you please hit the thanks option at the bottom left of my post please.

Question about Sunshine

I just got an HTC One M8 today and I want to get it to s off and install CyanogenMod. I'm on the 4.4.4 build and I have root with Sunshine but when I grant it root and it does the compatibility check it says "At this time, SunShine cannot work on your phone"
Is there a fix for this or do I have to wait for Sunshine 3?

I would give it a couple more tries. When I did mine it took me like 3 tries as it kept failing. I had to reboot and run it again. Are you running sunshine while you have root access with weaksauce2 ? I think you need to be and open weaksauce2 to make sure it shows you have root access. And if it reboots then does nothing for a whiles try opening weaksauce2 and see if that lets it work. I would say give it a couple more tries it cant hurt but may help.

Yeah I had root with WeakSauce2 when I used it and I tried a bunch of times.

This seems like a long shot but I think I've read that the new sunshine has weaksauce baked in. Have you tried uninstalling your standalone weaksauce and running sunshine as is? It's worth a shot.

It worked for me, current Sunshine...
I have M8 that came with 4.4.4 ... After days of research I finally just tried WeakSauce2 (It worked, gained temp root) ... Make sure you are using WeakSauce2 and not the original.
Then reluctantly, I tried Sunshine and it said it wouldn't work, as you stated. But I tried anyway. ... And it worked FIRST TRY.
I hate the fact that they charge (and charge so much) for it, but it was one of those I'm determined type things... I really hope the that trend of charging so much doesn't catch on. I'm all for donate or a couple of bucks but dammnnn come on... It's supposed to be for fun and everything, not to make thousands of dollars...
Anyways, the current sunshine worked for me, on 4.4.4 , and yes I am sure It was 4.4.4 KitKat and not 4.4.3 ....
Good luck.
My M8 is coming Friday. Do I go straight to Sunshine or do I need to Weaksauce2 first. I thought Weaksauce was now part of sunshine.
Thanks.

Like I said, I first only used WeakSauce2. I rebooted the phone several times just playing with the phone and re-ran weaksauce2 several times also (just playing, testing root, etc... ) - Days later I finally decided to just try Sunshine one night. I left Weaksuace2 running, ran Sunshine, and it worked.
I don't know if it is 'baked in' or not, but this was my experience.

Running weaksauce isn't needed. I'd try sunshine first as soon as you boot up your phone, if it doesn't work weaksauce may allow it to work after running it.
No Joy
Phone came with 4.4.4. Tried Sunshine. Failed. Weaksauce2 gives TempRoot. Weaksauce2 plus Sunshine fails. Manually installed SU. Kept screwing around and ran Flashify to TWRP. Phone booted to a scary red triangle. After awhile booted normally. Decided to start over and did a factory reset.
Did learn I didn't need a SIM Cutter or a trip to Verizon for a Nano SIM. It came with a VZW SIM and VZW has an online app to activate a replacement phone. Enter MEI, SIM ID, they text a code, you enter it, BAM, your done.
Not sure where to go from here. I'd pay way more than $25 for root. Really surprised this phone came from Amazon with 4.4.4. Always been able to get root before locked out. Missing my rooted S3 already other than it was old and slow..
All I really want is TiBu and Tether. Can I do that with just Weaksauce2 TempRoot? Does Freezing "Updater" block further updates so I can deny them until safe?
Thanks

I'm talking out of my @SS right now, but can you Unmount filesystem and then Remount as Read-Write while you have temp root, and then try Sunshine ? Im not sure that would make any difference at all, but If I was stuck I would try at least ...
Could you also use a Firewall and program like Autostarts to block and disable updater as well as disable it ? Again, I don't know, just saying...

Freezing updater would probably stop further updates, but you may want to take it if the next version of sunshine will work on it.
You just need to wait for the next version of sunshine to come out. Jcase and beaups want to wait for the lollipop release so the next version of sunshine will work on it. You did about all you could do for now, so you just have to wait for the update.

No. With s-on write protection is enabled on /system. Any changes you make will revert on reboot.
