[Completed] Note 3 Remote Desktop "Mouse Mode" - XDA Assist

I understand that this forum is to direct me to a relevant thread or topic to post under. Would appreciate guidance for where to post the following question...
I am looking for a remote desktop solution, like LogMeIn or TeamViewer that doesn't require me to do any detailed configuration.
The problem is that LogMeIn, for example, won't treat my Note 3 phone as a tablet, so I can't use the mouse like a normal mouse. (The settings for mouse are "move mouse" and "move screen", but there is no direct mode available for phones to use a mouse like a regular mouse.)
My device is an Android 4.4 KitKat Samsung Note 3 phone (unfortunately rooting is not an option for me), and I am using it with the Note 2 dock with an external monitor and wireless usb keyboard/mouse. Everything works great except I can't find a good remote desktop solution that will allow me to work "normally" in terms of the mouse.
I also have Win 8 Home version and do not want to configure port forwarding and a fixed ip to solve rotating external IP address assignments. (Please excuse me if I didn't say that correctly, but I really don't want to deal with those kinds of complexities.) Yes, I realize that I may have too many constraints - no configuration challenges (which I think rules out VNC or standard RDP), and also no rooting of the phone. But I am willing to pay a small monthly subscription, e.g. I looked at PocketCloud with $5/month, but that doesn't seem to support my requirement either from a quick look at the manual.
Is there anyone who can suggest a good solution for my situation?

Hi,
The info that you provided is great, however the Note 3 is divided up on XDA by carrier, so:
If you will type Note 3 in the box above (type to find your device) , select your carrier version, go to that forum's Q & A to post your question, you should be good to go !!
Regards.

Thanks! XDA Assist is a great idea. First time I've ever seen that in a forum.
And I really like your tag line...

[Q] Using gps-500 with tablet?

I have a gps-500 (a usb based GPS receiver) from when my laptop worked and wondered if some guru out there found a way to make it useful with the tablet.
For the price, $19 or so to purchase the 'sensor', it would make the tablet become a cool GPS for any others where tethering is not an option.
(http: preceeds the line below, since I'm too new to post links)

googling "pharos gps-500 linux" turned up quite a few places of interest
I also wanted to thank the devs for the wonderful work they are doing to let us use with our newest toy.. i mean tool

i'm using a bt-1000x travel recorder, it's a bluetooth gps, i't working great, all i have to do is use a special program on the gtab so it knows about the gps, works perfectly with google maps

was wondering if you had gotten this going yet? I have a BU-353 usb gps receiver and haven't gotten it to work yet. also haven't found (so far) any threads in the Gtab forums talking about if usb gps work or not with the modified firmwares.
Nothing working for mine so far. I had looked at this,
wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Navit_on_Android
it "works", as in 'it wont crash', no maps show though. I have not yet posted any questions or such to see if anyone knows a way to make the program take its input from my gps receiver. Though it may be as simple as linking the programs expected input device to /dev/USB (or whatever the proper syntax is)
The nasty thing is I had to get the Google Market working on the dev kits virtual device so I could use the virtual device to download a supplementary apk which was required by Navit (a text to speech apk) ...(the market via my tablet couldn't find it, or GPSTether either)
And found this as well, still no joy

I'm so new to all this android stuff, 3 weeks, but I'm having a wonderful time playing and experimenting
Regards and have fun,

Was there any more info on this? I just bought one of these GPS units and can't get it to work.

[Q] Custom IR - Infrared apps (Similar to PEEL Remote Control)

Hello,
Just bough myself the amazing Galaxy Note 10, and it has "Peel Smart Remote" built-in app.
This app works fine with a lot of TV brands, but I believe it could be even better.
Are there any other apps that can control that IR emitter as well?
I want to be able to control my cable TV decoder, as well as other devices in my house, that are NOT available on peel.
As I'm trying to learn android dev (very beginning yet), I would love to know how to write my own app, so I could try to write something useful.
However, there are NO DOCS AT ALL about it! Not on Android SDK, not on Samsung SDK. No API related, absolutely nothing.
Looking at Samsung developer forums, their oficial position about the subject is that "there is no information about it, that's all we known".
Well, if "Peel Smart Remote" app is able to control that infrared chip, it MUST have a way for us (developers) to do the same!
Can anyone tell me/us how to start?
I don't know, maybe a little reverse engineering in peel's source code to find out how peel works, and reproduce it!
I believe I'm not the only one that is looking for some different uses for the IR Led Emitter on the Galaxy Note 10, so let's try to figure out something!
Thanks!

Hummmm now that was weird...
I just downloaded that touchsquid demo, and they have A LOT of limitation on the demo version: "you cannot try the samsung TV in this demo version". Also, you can't download it from market/play, you download the INSTALLER from play, and have to allow "allow other source" to install it.
I mean, if peel is obscure, touchsquid is even more!
What are they afraid of?
nope!
Demo mode has limited function because of license...send me a pm arr arr!
You install the .apk from market, And then You install the help And settings apk. These two are separat. No Idea why.
The developers of touchsquid are extremely responsive, I paid the £11 for the Samsung tablet version, it nicely controls my UK sky+, Samsung tv and hdmi switcher "straight out of the box" and after a couple of email exchanges my Phillips DVD system, they responded to emails the same day and in both cases updated their device database with correct ir codes within 1 to 2 days. Bearing in mind how poor Peel its for non American users, this it's the only alternative at present, it's a bit of a niche due to the general lack of devices with an ir emitter so any attempts of the developer community to make one would be keenly anticipated

I wish Logitech would get in on this. I LOVE my harmony one remote, and would happily pay for an app that would let me do the same with my tab, even if it is a spendy app.

That's strange - stupid Logitech! I found that the best IR software for Android is the one that comes with the Sony Tablets. It has a great database of existing devices, but it also allows the IR blaster to learn commands from existing controls (ie I have an infra-red controlled light switch which it works with).
I imagine if there is an API for the IR Blaster someone could program such features in.....it's frustrating that Peel doesn't work with Sky though. I might try the suggestion above myself.

Any chance you could post links to the Sony apk and to that IR switch that allows the Note to learn commands? That would be great!

Just sent. License from who? Samsung? I mean.. Do we need to have a licensed remote control to work with Samsung (or other) devices?
Or is the license about using their trademark?
I mean, (if we got that API), can't we develop apps to control Samsung (and other) devices?
Can't we share them for free on Google Play? I can't think a way that this would cause financial losses for them!

Actually, Galaxy Tab/Note only have IR Emitter.
It doesn't have a receiver, that's why we can't have a "IR Code Learning" with our Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Note.
Are there any developers here who can help me disassembly existing APKs, and try to find out how to control that IR chip?
I never worked with Java before, only learned to disassembly compiled C/C++ applications...

As said before it's merely a blaster - not a receiver. Touchsquid is great but sadly the ui is seriously lacking polish!!
Yeah, yeah, I get that the Note 10.1 does not have a IR receiver. If you read the quote I list, a poster claims to have a switch that allows the sony app to learn. Hence, I asked for a link to the app and the switch.

No he doesn't - because that was me who said that. In fact, what I said was there is on the Sony S Tablet, the program is capable of learning commands BECAUSE the Sony has an IR receiver built in. Which doesn't help us because the Note 10.1 doesn't (which I have found out since making that post). I never said it would work on the 10.1!

Well the Note hasnt a dedicated IR receiver, but maybe the camera could just do the same job. You can see the IR diode of any remote flashing if you point at the camera whilst using the cam app. Anyway there are already tons of IR codes available on the web, all we need is an app which is way more customable than the Peel app.

What is really a "IR Code"?
Is that about the frequency of IR Led Blinking?
For example, on PEEL you have to choose your device, than you can customize key codes.
Example: My LG TV: Vol-up=326, Vol-down=327.
Peel doesn't support it, but let's say it DOES, and I choose "Samsung TV", but customize the Vol-Down code to "326".
Will it work on my LG TV? Or are there any other variables that intereferes on it?
I mean, if the only variable is that "code", than we could make a "Brute force" trying codes from 1 to 6556, and pause it when something happens to our TV or any other device, is that right?
About the camera working as a IR Receptor, that really would makes sense IF camera could take enough fps to decode the frequency.
That's something to investigate.
Are the programmers in "Android Development" aware of this thread? Someone with a little more technical information could add more to this thread (I can't post there, unfortunally).
Here's a good explaination of codes: ww w. hifi-remote.c om/infrared/IR-PWM.shtm l.
Some raw LG codes are here: files.remotecentral.c om/library/3-1/lg/2008_television/index.ht ml.
For the moment i have no idea how the 'code' number in the Peel remote is linked to the raw code. Illhave a look there tomorrow
Does anyboda have new informations regarding a infrared remote APP?
It would be great if I could remote control my LED Stripes with the Galaxy Note 10.1. There are some similar apps like IRDroid but all are using an external device.
Would it be possible to use the integrated infrared interface in android APP?
I copied the following response from Samsung's developer forum. Samsung will not release the API for the IR blaster on Galaxy Tab 2 series.

Hello!
We would like to find out if we can utilize the IR (Infrared) port on the Galaxy to comunicate to a another device. We do not see that the Standard Android SDK has any support for IR. Does Samsun have an SDK or API to utilize?
Thanks,

Here is another forum post, I noticed that the username of the last response is "TouchSquid". They must have either talked to someone higher up at Samsung or figured it out on their own since they now offer an app.

This lack of an SDK is both bizarre and confusing. Both of the available apps - Peel and Touchsquid - are useless for different reasons. If you could combine them both then they might add up to a useful app but separately they're useless. I've tried and uninstalled both.
The thing that's really needed is someting I've been after for a long time and I'm surprised no-one has yet thought of it - a combined IP Remote. All the Hifi and electronics manaufacturers have their own apps and SDKs to control their equipment over wifi and each one needs to be installed separately. Imagine a single interface that could talk to all of the various IP controls. You wouldn't need an IR port then, just a set of IP controllable equipment.
It could be extended to incorporate things like Mediaportal or XBMC, WDTV live, AppleTV? - basically anything with a web based interface and an SDK. Build it so that each remote is added as a plugin and it can be expanded as each new device comes along. It would be the ultimate Home Cinema remote!
Someone get on it!

[Q] MS Remote Desktop on Note 10.1

I've installed Microsoft's Remote Desktop app, and made some changes on my desktop (actually laptop) to be able to use my Note 10 as a Windows client. On my home WiFi network, using my Note 3 as the router, it worked nicely. However, I'm not really going to use it sitting next to my laptop, but rather when I'm out on town or some other place. I realize that I won't find my laptop through its name on my network, this requires more advanced settings, so I've searched for tutorials on this. However, those I found where rather rudimentary, meaning I actually understood everything and had already implemented it. I'm sure a "true" remote setting requires a more sophisticated setup. Hence, are there any users here who have already implemented this? Do you set up a special account on the desktop/laptop? I understand if it is a daunting task to explain all this to half nitwit like myself, but I am capable of learning, so if you know a good thorough tutorial on the subject I'd happily devote some time for the subject.
If you have your laptop running on your home network and you want to access it through Remote Desktop while somewhere else, it is a significant setup needing some technical knowledge to make the system visible on the internet as you have found out. You need to create an opening through your internet router, set up some sort of dynamic DNS service and so on.
You may be better using a tailor made solution designed to do what you want without all those hassles. Not wishing to advertise anything specific, but TeamViewer is very much intended for this, running as an app on the tablet and a service on the laptop PC. The software hadles the communication between the two through a central 'broker' service.
I'll go ahead and name names. Ive tried several and my favorite so far has been either Pocket Cloud or Jump Desktop. Jump is my daily choice and can be easily set up on your PC using your Google account so you can always find it, even when off of your own network. Jump also seems a little smoother than Pocket Cloud. Both support 1 free connection I believe.
Good luck finding the right one for you.
As for direct RDP without Jump Desktop or similar, you'd need to set up your router with port forwarding and choose a port that you will use in conjunction with your external IP address to enter into your RDP app on your tablet. Problem is that some ISP hardware (like my DSL modem) has built in firewalls that prevent port forwarding from working. Not to mention that your IP address may not be static unless you pay for that option specifically with your ISP. Consequently it may change every time the power cycles on your DSL modem or router.
@Spydervoice
Ahh, very helpful comment, much appreciated. So a dynamic IP, which is what most ISPs provide will in essence spoil the experience unless I set it up specifically for each day. See, this is the kind of erudite reply that makes a person willing to endure spam and LOLcats on the Internet.
I used Splashtop before, with my ASUS Transformer, but the lag essentially made it a bust. What was nice about the Microsoft RDP was the instantaneous response. I actually ran a session of Word on my Note 10.1 and it was neither uncomfortable nor frustrating. Hence, my interest in making a session available over the Internet.
Assuming I could do this whole thing about opening up a port in the router, do I expose myself to hacker attacks?

I use spalshtop hd every day from different places with no lag at all. Might give it a shot again, if you got decent home rig.
Have you tried TeamViewer? I find it works mostly well, and you don't need to worry about home connections changing addresses and such.

Tips for a pleasant XDA:
Search before asking. Someone has likely already asked.
Spell your words completely, and use punctuation. It confuses people when you use "u" and "ur" and "dat", or when you wrongly use "there/their/they're/your/you're".
Be nice. Don't be rude, just move on to another post without leaving a comment. We are not 7 years old.
And PLEASE, do not ask for the "best" anything. We all have our preferences.
(I feel like a twit for somehow missing an earlier post suggesting TeamViewer)

If you have trouble with Dynamic IP you can always use a dynamic DNS service. Most modern routers include the capability, or you can get client software for your PC or NAS. This will allow you to have your own DNS name which remaps your IP address whenever it changes.
---------- Post added at 09:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:31 PM ----------
The other thing to watch out for if you are opening your router the big bad world is make sure you have only the port you need open to the outside world, and don't use the standard port for RDP 3389. Just a word of warning.
The part about opening up a port is what causes apprehension. Even if I use a different port, aren't there something called "port sniffers" available to hackers interested in breaking in?
Sent from my SC-01F using Tapatalk
another great solution if you do not want to mess with port forwarding and dynamic dns (paid though, and not too chip) is logmein. it is the simplest i ever used.
next one mentioned somewhere in this thread that worked for me too is Jump Desktop with google account set up. i think this one is free for one connection or so...
i have never used team viewer do do not have an opinion about that
original win RDP will work only with ports forwarded and dynDns service running on your router.
port forwarding tutorial by ms:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...op-connections-from-outside-your-home-network
dyndns confug will vary in different routers.
i was using it for some time with both pocket cloud and jump desktop and both worked great. never had any issues even when working through 3G.
hope it helps...

[Q] Is there such a Note Taking app?

After desperate searching without any good result, hope to get some advice here.
I've been looking for a simple yet decent note app.
Evernote is too "heavy", it is powerful, but not my type.
What I've been looking for is a note app, with the following features:
1. cable of adding new note, either text of snapshot with 1 click. Lots of apps can do it.
2. With PC client, or web client, so users can organize notes on pc. It is terrible do the input job on any phone, compared to PC.
3. searching inside a specific note. This is one of the key feature which is so hard to find, don't know why. Lots of apps is only poorly cable of indicating which note is the key word in, but can't locate it in the specific note, which means users have to search the key word with their naked eye inside the note, can't believe it!
App of Note Everything is almost what I need, but it doesn't have any PC client.
Any advice or clue is appreciated!

[Completed] Does anyone own a Nubryte Touchpoint?

I'm looking into getting some of these to replace a few "dummy" switches that I have that just act as scene controllers in my lighting network. From the videos I've seen, it appears that they run Android (here's a video showing the google keyboard being used).
My issue is, I want to use them with my native home automation apps as simply android tablets/intercoms on the wall. Does anyone own one and can confirm if anything like adb is available over wifi?
