It is all in how you have it formatted. Did you follow lfaber06's instructions in the safestrap post about how to format and partition your card? I would guess right off that if you only have a 2GB card, it is not big enough to do what you need.
k. i will get a larger card and give it a shot.
thank you!

There are some issues with safestrap right now, and lfaber06 and I are looking into it. You should go have a read of the posts going on in there right now.
Just post back in here a couple more times, and it will allow you to post over in the thread about safestrap, because this is technically a double post, and the mods might take it down. Just post a reply to me with anything in it, I will reply back to you then you reply one more time, then you should be able to post in the proper thread, we would like to keep all the issues over in that thread.

Now try and post the issue with /emmc over in the right post. If you can't come back in here, and we can post back and forth a few times until it lets you post over there. I think it is 10 times, to be able to post in the dev forum, but I have heard others that have even 11 posts have had issues so give it a try.

Alright, so I rooted my phone the other day and then got it backed up using titanium backup. I put the backup on my laptop also to be safe. Well, something happened. I am not that familiar with Roms and everything. Well, I got the Darky's Rom 9.5 and then put it on my phones sd card. I started the phone up in the cmw (i think thats what its called) and then deleted the cache and data and stuff like that then I selected the install zip from sd card. Well, I did that and then my phone started to reboot. It kept getting to the Galaxy S 4G and then goes black for a second then re appears. Well, I cant seem to do anything. I can put it in download mode and I can go back to the cmw mode and everything. Well, I have the titanium backup so I just want to restart my whole phone and then re-root it again and then re install all my apps using the titanium backup. I am pretty nooby at all this stuff on phones. Please help me. I can still put stuff on my phones sd card and then I can go to install zip from sd card. If there is a way, please let me go back to the "out-of-the-box" settings. I think I need the default ROM for this. Anyways, thank you. I really need this to work. I hope I didnt break my phone! ='(
Also, this is my first thread thing like ever in my life, so yeah, dont get angry at me if I did something wrong
I would really appreciate it if someone could walk me through how to fix it. I will be on here waiting for replies, so we can have a conversation if you do not mind. Please help me, I cannot lose this phone.
Did you do an nandroid backup???

You are safe... you say that you can get the phone into download mode, right?
I can get it into download mode. That is why I am not freaking out as bad right now lol But yeah, what do i do? I need to download stuff and use kies and stuff again right? Thank you so much for replying too! I am so happy right now! lol But yeah, I can do pretty much everything except start the phone and get past the samsung galaxy s screen.
I could not do that nandroid backing (that was with the rom manager right?). Whenever i opened rom mananger and tried to back up the files, it never actually backed them up. It kept going to the one cwm and said error. So, I just did the titanium one and made sure to have it on my computer and my phone. Thanks for replying too! it means a lot
I would advise you to follow this thread if you have the GB bootloaders...
or this thread if you don't...
Once you have GB, you'll be able to re-flash with other GB ROMs...

Alright, I am not sure if I have the GB bootloaders. I am currently downloading the fully back to stock thing and am going to follow the directions. I have all my apks and data from before it broke, will I be able to put my titanium backup folder into my sd card and then backup the data? Or should my backup still be on my sd card. Yeah anyways, is it safe to do that? will all the files be one it correctly? Im just worried. But anyways, thank you so much. I was trying to read other forums but I couldn't figure it out. And I learned something, do not try to flash things when you do not know what you are doing lol.
I read somewhere that rom manager does not work for my phone; is that true? Do I even need Rom manager to flash my phone? sorry for all the questions, it is just so hard to find all these online haha Thank you very much again

Before getting into this tight spot... what had you done to your phone (re: modding)?
It sounds like nothing... which means it was a stock. Don't be confused by the judicious use of the word "stock" in these forums (I speak from experience here)...
Many of the "stock" ROMs which you will see are actually modified-stock ROMS. Some even say SMS-... indicating "Subtly-modified-stock"...
If your phone has the original ROM, then it is not GB. In that case, you'll need to use the second link... if you have a Windows machine. If your machine is not Windows, then that link will not help you because it uses ODIN which is a Windows-only tool.

No, if you look at the Wiki (link in my signature), you will find that there are 3 ways (excluding ROM Mangler) to flash ROMs to your phone.

If you have to use the 2nd thread (the GB Ext4 Starter Pack), you will be formatting your SDCARD. So, no, the backup will not be on your card. We need to get those onto your computer somehow (if you haven't already backed up SDCARD onto your computer).
I used the first one. So I still have everything. I think it will all work out perfect=] Thank you

As for ROMs, my advice to you is to install the Valhalla-Final. My advice is based on the fact that this is the only final GB ROM that I am aware of. I have recently installed this and I have nothing bad to say about it.
On the other hand, if you like bleeding edge, then keep your eye on Valhalla Black Edition. I played with it over the weekend and, although still a work in progress, I have high expectations of it.
Not to be narrow-minded, I have heard good things about the one which you were originally setting out to install... I may look at it myself!

why? twrp can be passcode protected as well. anyways, its easy to get around the recovery security features as well, if a person really wants to use the phone. you can always get a stolen phone that protected in the phone and recovery, then just flash the system img on it, and itll be a "new" phone after.

doesnt matter anyways, as all this security isnt real security, all it does is discourage the people against breaking in, unless they REALLY want to.

speaking of, i just a read article a few days ago, i dont remember where.. if you wipe your phone completely, and sell it, the new user can easily still get all your info off of it, even though it was wiped.

Yes same with any filesystem, nothing is ever deleted. It isn't easy though... But if you follow the link in my data recovery thread you can see its possible.

Just further to the above.
When you do a basic format or wipe, it just clears the filesystem entries but leaves the files. If you could mount the media in a pc, you could use standard data recovery methods.
Of course you can't mount mtp devices as a drive. You could take a userdata.img and uncompress it then mount it as a loop device on linux. There are windows alternatives too.
Only way to prevent is to overwrite the blocks with other data, even if it's empty data (eg you could dd an image. ).
Not sure if fastboot unlock does something similar.

Little bit of a shameless plug. But I made a thread/video a couple of days ago about using NFC to unlock your phone. If you have root/xposed framework you can download the module, authorize an NFC tag and just leave the NFC tag somewhere safe. This way if you forget your password you can unlock your phone with the NFC tag.
Here's my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/quick-unlocking-nfc-smartwatch-t2826592
Or....just write the password down and keep it somewhere safe. I guess that would be the most simple solution.
That's it. I'm dunking my phone in the toilet just in case I lose my phone later.

Not necessarily easily, but data is theoretically recoverable if there's enough of the storage medium left to stick under an electron microscope. The best you can hope for is to make recovery too financially prohibitive for the attacker to consider.

Woudl anyone kindly give me a copy of your nandroid backup please? I have a corrupted file system. My /system/app and my /system/priv-app have both been combined together in /data/data. There are some other unique changes too. I don't even know how the phone can operate like this, but it works flawlessly. Unfortunately, I have been hacked and nothing works to get rid of it. If anyone has good adb command skills and can guide me, I'd be happy with that. My adb commands are not extended, and not of them work thus far. I want my phone back in good shape. As of now, there is a bootloader script that erases any changes upon boot.. I need help here. I keep asking, and I see dozens of you reading... but not one reply. Help would be nice. Lol

If it was that simple I wouldn't be here asking for help. I've been flashing for 4 years. Hundreds of times. More than 20 devices. There is a modified bootloader that wipes any updates and keeps the script alive. It takes over my whole OS. I know because I have two Note 5's. One I just got from my friend. It has never been rooted. So when I compare the two, I see lots of major differences. Some of my settings are completely gone. Like the ability to use fingerprints to open websites and verify Samsung account. Then, on the unrooted phone, when I swipe left to briefing, it says "Briefing" wants permission. On my previously rooted, but currently unrooted phone, it says "Touchwiz Home" wants permission. On top of that, I'm not getting the prompts for permissions when I open a app. They are already granted. when I first flash BPC3 and immediately flash TWRP I can see my system files in place. When I boot and look again form ROM Toolbox, the /system folder is empty and I found everything loaded in /data/data. I see several locations with recovery scripts, and one with a fstab.storage in the cache folder. If I delete the cache, the phone will not boot. If I take any of the /data/data apps out, the phone will not boot. I have successfully got it to boot one time and everything seemed fine. However, over the course of a day, little by little, everything reinstalls itself. I'm assuming from a masked backup location. This is a real hack job, and I need some help. I'm not a complete idiot, however, this kind of thing is WAAAAAY over my head. I could start snapping screenshots and posting them here if any of you want to learn more about this and help me get it fixed. I can't use this phone like this. Somebody has complete control of my device.

Help me bro. This isn't something normal. Please. I'll provide you with whatever information you need. Read the above post.
Oh yeah, one other thing. When I use ODIN I am getting a message that says... "receiving message from bootloader. Please wait two minutes." Then it go the next file and says the same thing, On the third file it fails.
Okay, so I found some logs in the dropbox folder and found a bunch of code linked to a GitHub account owned by this guy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=1897326 I'm not saying that he is responsible, but I am saying that someone is using his code maliciously. I have it on my phone, I have system logs to verify it, and I have tons of problems with all my accounts being hacked. My phone will not reinitialize on Smart Switch. Nothing works. Sombebody please help me update my bootloader. I don't know how to do this myself and I can not find any information anywhere. Flashing a new sboot.tar with ODIN does not work. Upon reboot, it gets erased and the same old crap comes back.

I'm still working on it. This has some incredibly complicated scripts designed to stop any fixes. I haven't figured it out yet. I have been working non-stop for a week now. I think I'm close to figuring it out, but I'm not as good or even close to his skill set. A lot of this stuff is like looking at Chinese. I'm working on a new initramfs to get everything in order again. I hope to be finished soon. I'll post a detailed fix when I am finished. I'm not going anywhere, I'm here to help others as much as possible. I'll be posting a fix soon.
Somebody share their 100% stock nandroid with me. If you are worried about your data, restore the backup, do a factory reset then back up that nandroid and send me a link in a pm. I need it badly. This crap that i have isnt going away with anything. In four years, this is the ONLY device that I have not been able to fix. I know somebody was smart and backed up their factory image before they rooted. I need that person to step forward please. My device is severely f**ked up. If I could use a .tar or a zip file to fix my phone, I wouldn't be here asking for a nandroid. Rooting my second Note 5 would be stupid because I see the same app data already infected on this one. Once I fix my 64GB Note 5 I'm going to sell this 32GB . Nobody buys a rooted phone. I own a cell phone repair shop. I know they won't buy rooted phones unless they are stupid. They always come back complaining about Samsung pay or something security wise that alerted them to the fact that is has been rooted. I'm seeing some of the same **** on my unrooted phone that I see on my rooted phone. It is the app-data, but at least with this phone, I can factory reset and get rid of it and start over. I 'm going to send emails to Google and ask them to clear my stored app-data on every app that is on my account. I can't keep this **** off my phone. This mother***ker wrecked my device. I have removed two of the 6 extra partitions, and now it won't boot. Even if I flash a new .tar with a pit file and nand erase. This is my first phone is four years of flashing and modding that I have not been able to fix. I am not getting any help. Just dumb questions like this one over and over. Lol IF I COULD DO ANY OF THAT, I WOULD NOT BE ASKING FOR HELP. I need a nandroid because that will fix my phone. The one I have is altered and the rest got wiped from my computer when I posted that I had logs. Those got wiped too. This person behind this is all up in my computers and phones and I can't keep them out. I've done everything. Wiped hard drives and started with a clean install on both, bought a new router and set up new passwords. and flashed my phones. It slows them down, but hey get right back in everything over the course of a week. I'm so f**king sick of this. The funny part, I bet more that half of you have the same problems, but you aren't intimate with your devices enough to know that someone is there. This person behind this is highly skilled.... to say the least. This **** was on my phone for at least 3 months, maybe four, before I even realized something was wrong. That is how smooth this is. The phone works flawlessly still. (until I removed two partitions anyways. Now it won't boot.) Share your stock nandroid after wiping it with a factory reset. I don't need any of your personal information.... Just your legit partitions layout. What is so funny about that? I have seen this request a few times in the last four years. I never thought it would happen to me though.
You wanna know a little secret? The app power saving feature has been hacked to allow apps to retain some of the battery power when the device is turned off. Here is the deal. It is not really turned off. It is in a hibernate mode that retains the app-data so that when you turn the phone back on, everything comes back. You think this is not possible? Lol you better study more, and start opening scripts on your device and reading them. You'll find all sorts of neat things if you have been flashing and modding.

I'll take anything that I can get as long as you are 100% sure that it is unaltered. I'd love to have the L and the M if you don't mind. Just so I have options. I'm dying to end this b.s. Please send me either one or both. I promise I"m not gonna abuse you in any way.
The truth is, it doesn't matter. You can still revert all the way back to OI6 from PC3. I tried AOK but it wouldn't flash. Send me anything bro. I'd be grateful.
I'll see what I can do when I get home at work now what version is your phone currently running??

You are absolutely correct. I used to always make nandroids, but I got cocky and lazy and quit doing it. Now I regret totally regret that. I will never in my life root another phone without making a nandroid and keeping it safe in two spots. One in the cloud, and the other on a OTG all by itself. I need you bro. Please send me a good nandroid so I can end this nightmare. Lol

Yeah, that is fine. Rooted is great as long as you didn't mod it before that nandroid. If so, the partition layout will be intact and when I flash it, it will wipe my device completely and I'll be good again. I have seen a few others with this problem over the years, and the only way they fixed it was by using someone's nandroid. I'm am a big fan of the Evo 4G! That is what started it all for me! Lol I made some pretty awesome JB roms for the Evo. You can see them here. http://android.aokforums.com/roms-vf3.html When I get this cleared up, I'm going to make something nice for the Note 5. It's been awhile since I've compiled any roms, but I am suddenly eager to start up again. Thank you for stepping up here bro. I won't forget this.
I can send you a backup of my current setup now but it's the deodexed marshmallow rom with sky-high kernel version 3.0

Hey all! My friend has an s3. He is in a different state so I can't experiment on it quite yet.
He has a lot of files he needs to recover from the internal storage. He already has the sd data.
The issue is that the phone will not fully boot. It gets a little past the verizon logo and crashes.
He has tried wiping cache, and booting without the sdcard in.
What can we do to get those files for him?
Verizon said they can't use their diag machine since the device needs to fully power on for them to service it in that fashion.
Is it possible to flash the stock system partition without overwriting data via Odin?
Bump

Really kind of a tough situation.
Can he get into recovery mode? If so maybe he can pull data from it that way. There's a few ways to do it. It's hard to tell unless I see what the phone does when it boots.
Sorry for the late reply, hardly ever check these forums anymore.

I know he can get to stock recovery, because he's wiped cache that way. I don't believe that he is rooted or anything. I won't know for sure until I'm in person. The issue is that he thinks Verizon wants him to send the phone to them. He used a free upgrade. They sent him the replacement phone with a return box, so he's still not sure at the moment. And I haven't used an upgrade in about 4 years so I don't remember ever having to give back a device.

If he has USB debugging enabled be can use ADB to pull the SD card folder onto his computer in recovery mode.
Otherwise can't do much with stock recovery, if he's rooted you may be able to load TWRP from download mode and boot immediately into recovery mode.

He's got the SD data. We're working on the /data/ partition now. I think it's mainly notes and pics if I'm not mistaken. I'm really hoping that he's rooted and just forgot or something.
We can make it into odin mode.
You don't need root.

I'm thinking of trying to flash stock via Odin to see if that will make it boot. Otherwise, it may have to go jtag route.
I am going to attempt to ODIN on it. Unfortunately I don't know what version of android he was on.
Which ODIN files would you recommend? Preferably one that won't need me to wipe the data partition. Also, please provide links if possible. I have found some stuff on my own, but a lot of links are dead.

Odin will wipe everything. Every .tar file I've come across essentially just return the phone to a completely stock state.
Wish I had old stuff but I don't. What have you found?

Ah, I had found one that said it wasn't going to wipe data. I'll try to find the link again today. They were saying it was like doing an ota update and it would leave data in place.

O wait I think I vaguely remember, but that we when the bootloader was unlocked, like 5 years ago.
Make sure you post the for here and I can try to help you, but if it's an older version it won't. You need to make sure the Odin file is the same or newer than your current bootloader.
@BadUsername I found this, which has the crappiest hosting servers I have ever seen. You can only download one file a day, so I need to keep changing my IP if I need more than one file from it. here
This is the no-wipe file i was referring to. I am just not sure if it is an android version that his device will accept. I am not sure if Odin allows you to go forward and backward. Here

Just open up download mode and post what it says in the top left corner.
Also that file you posted first is the newest one, assuming it's legit it would work. That would for sure wipe everything.
Bottom one is old, probably won't work. Odin should just fail and not let you flash it. If it did work, it would fail at the bootloader stage and brick your phone anyway.

That's what I was afraid of. I have no idea how updated he kept the device. And since I can only get into stock recovery and download mode I can't learn much about the device. I wish I could just adb in and grab the data partition off of it. Verizon is hounding him to send the device back or they will charge him $500 or something absurd. Which seems extra crazy since he has had that device since it was released. I thought for sure he would own it by now. Verizon has never asked me for a device back.
Have you found any helpful odin stuff out?

I won't be able to see the device until tonight. I will try to see if he is around the device now so he can let me know. His house has terrible reception and no wifi so I am trying to gather everything before the next time I go there.
@BadUsername Do you know if there is a list of odin files anywhere? This sub seems so disorganized imo. I can't find a helpful sticky or anything.

You can still pull nearly everything off the phone with adb from download mode if USB debugging was enabled, you can literally pull every partition and extract what you need.
You can load a very old version of cwm recovery through Odin and flash aroma file manager if you are rooted, if you can get into recovery. Then you can move whatever you want to an external SD card.
Other than that you're likely stuck.
