I just got my Verizon HTC One M8, and I noticed the messaging icon on my home screen doesn't show an unread count. The mail icon does, and the messaging icon on my DNA (running Sense 5.5) did too. Is this normal behavior, or has something gone wrong? Thanks!
I don't think there is an unread counter for messages, you could always use a custom launcher like nova and get them though
That's weird that they would remove that since it was in the last version of Sense! Also, the mail icon shows unread emails too! SMH!

Try removing messages from your dock and re adding it. You should have the bubbles unless you are on a custom rom with them broken.

I tried removing and re-adding the icon and it didn't work. I'm on the stock Rom, s-off, unlocked and rooted. I thought I was crazy, so I looked at my wife's DNA and she definitely gets the little green bubble with the unread message count. Just to be sure, you're verifying that you have an M8 and that you get the unread count on your messaging icon? Thanks!

No didn't touch VVM, just froze Verizon bloat like VZ Navigator, VZ Cloud, VZ Tones, etc. Nothing that should effect messages.
I'm actually surprised to see you have the unread notification! I just spent an hour Googling around, and I see a few people saying that they only get the notification on the email app.
The guy I work with has a One M8 as well, and he has the unread messages notification bubble!! I tried unfreezing the stuff I had frozen, and that didn't work. I changed my theme back to the default theme, didn't work either! Anyone have any other ideas that I should try? Thanks!!
I get them on CleanROM.

Unfreeze until they return. Bet it's tied to Verizon visual voicemail.
I found out that the culprit was the extended power saver mod. It replaces the Messages.apk with one that is compatible with the mod, and then you lose the notification bubble. I replaced the APK with my original Messages.apk and the bubble returned but now I can't launch messages from the extended power saver launcher.

So here's the thing.... that's probably an international phone based mod you flashed. The extended power option mod can be done and bubbles still be present. The intl phones don't have vvm... and even just swapping their MMS app for ours ends with missing bubbles on our (VZW) phones.

According to another post I saw, you are correct. An XML file can be edited as well as a smali file, and then you get both the extreme power saver setting as well as the notification bubble. I just wish someone would put them both together and release it!!

Awesome!! I can now launch messages while in extreme power saver mode! Let me ask you this...I reverted my messages.apk back to the original version to get the notification bubble back, which broke the ability to launch it during extreme power saver mode. Your apk fixed my ability to launch messages, and I still have the bubble! However, I just noticed that MMS is limited to 300K. Is that because of the messages.apk I'm using? Can I go back to the messages.apk included with the extreme power saver mod and still keep the notification bubble? And will my max MMS size go back to 1200K? Thanks a bunch man, I really appreciate your work and your help!!

It is not because of the messages.apk file. Your /system/customize/MMS/default.xml got tampered with the mod that you flashed. You need to re-flash the current rom your on again or if you made a restore?

Yes. It will be close to bottom. Should look like this:

500K

1200K

Some alternative home launchers (ADW) enable you to remove the text underneath the icons on your home screen(s). The mod does the same while keeping the stock Rosie.
Attached is a MetaMorph that you can use to apply to your existing Rosie.apk, that will remove the text from the icons on the homescreen(s), while retaining any previous edits done to your Rosie launcher. It does not currently recoup the space that the text previously occupied, however, it does allow for a "cleaner" look.

XML MetaMorph Control File <--- Apply using the latest MetaMorph Application
Note: When modifying Rosie.apk with MetaMorph any of your existing widgets on all of your screens will likely get reset and need to be re-added.
Also, for some reason on the EVO, Rosie does not appear to like to be edited via MetaMorph, and as such, after applying the MetaMorph, you phone may freeze, requiring a battery pull or issuing a reboot via adb. All will apply fine after reboot.
As an alternative, you can pull the 'resources.arsc' file out of the linked MetaMorph, and manually insert it into your existing Rosie.apk file, and adb push back to your phone. It is recommended to issue the push during a reboot, or generate an update.zip file to flash via recovery. Pushing via reboot or applying via an update.zip file in recovery will prevent you from having to re-apply any of your widgets. As mentioned above, applying changes to Rosie while the phone is fully booted causes you to have to re-apply any widgets.

Problem is, if you have any other changes to Rosie making it non-stock, a flashable zip will undo those other changes. It's such an easy change, if you want, post up your Rosie.apk file, and I'll modify it and create a flashable zip.
Will this myn-WarmTwoPointTwo-09-27-2010-RLS-1 ROM work with this .zip file on recovery clockwork mod flash?
Worked great with Myn
Btw.. thank you OP.

The linked zip file is a MetaMorph. It is not a flashable zip that can be applied via any recovery.

Anyone else notice that this doesn't work with the HTC Sense settings widgets? This removed all the text from my home screen (flashed with Metamorph only lost my widgets not my icons) but the Wifi, GPS, Mobile data, and Ringer Profile all still have text. I assume this is because they are widgets not app icons?
Also oddly enough it un-centered the Phone icon on my Rosie launcher using Virus theme, it is now slightly to the left, doesn't matter at all to me just found it odd.
Again sir, another great MOD. Glad you have an EVO now, I always seem to like your MODs.

That is correct. Any widgets that have text under them are essentially not program shortcuts and would have to be modified directly, as opposed to globally via Rose

That is what I thought for the widgets just wanted to be sure. As for the phone icon mo that was actually me not being observant lol. Turns out it just removed the word "Phone" that was next to the phone icon, I just never noticed the icon was off center till the word was no longer there. This is an awesome mod to bad soon after flashing this I found a really awesome font, one awesome enough for me to want my icon text back lol. I had to flash my Nandroid back up to get the text back. Do you know if there is a way to make a metamorph to bring the text back instead of having to go this route?

Oops, that should not have happened, i.e. remove of the 'Phone' text. That is an accident on my part, as I have it removed, and it is in the same file. I thought I was working off a stock Rosie for this mod, but clearly I was not. Sorry about that. I will modify accordingly.
You can always grab the stock Rosie.apk out of the ROM zip file you originally downloaded and just push it back to your phone to undo this change.
So with this mod taking away the texts, is it possible to manipulate the size of the icons as well??
Hi,
This is my first Android app, NBLauncher. It's a simple app that let you add shortcuts to apps as buttons in the notification bar (expanded view), so you can quickly launch an app from anywhere (as long as you have access to the notification bar). I've seen similar apps on the Android market, but I haven't seen one that uses multiple buttons/apps on the same notification line. NBLauncher currently allows a maximum of 15 buttons (three lines of five). After installing, launch NBLauncher from app drawer to configure what apps you want to add to notification bar. Use the up/down arrows to rearrange the order of the buttons. Make sure to click "Done" when exiting. You'll then see the NBLauncher icon on the notification bar. Pull down the notification and you'll see the buttons to launch your app. It also saves the list of apps so you when reboot the phone, it auto-starts with your configured list.
Two minor things that I haven't figure out. Maybe you guys could help.
1. Each notification line requires it's own notification icon in the bar. So if there are three lines of buttons, there will be three separate icons. I have made only one visible and the others invisible, but I have no idea how to get rid of the invisible icons while keeping the notification. Any ideas?
2. During installation of the app, Android lists accessing phone book/contact as one of the things that the app does. But I am not touching the phone book or any contact info. How can this be? How does it determine what an app could do? Based on permission? This obviously has an negative effect of scaring people away from the app
Feed backs and suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
can you give us a little screenshots before we give it a go?..
Nice, I like it, much better then App Launcher, which costs $2 right now.
I couldn't find it in the Market though, did you pull it?
Only complaint so far is that it doesn't play well with lcd density changes. I'm set at 161, so the UI is a little cramped when setting up, but the launcher in the notification tray scales perfectly and looks good. There are several market apps that don't scale well with density changes, so it's not even that big of a deal. Spare Parts, MixZing, Mint.com, and Shazam don't either, just to name a few.

If minSdkVersion is not set in AndroidManifest.xml, it assumes a minimum version of 1. In the SDK version 4(ish?), a few new permissions were added, so if minSdkVersion is below that, those permissions are included whether you need them or not. Read Phone State was among these.

I only tested the app on Droid X (my phone) and Evo 4G. Haven't test it on Samsung Galaxy series yet. Sure. As long as you site the source and keep me updated on any findings so I can update my app accordingly.
To be more specific, I think the problem is how button events/intents are handled vs. default intent of the notification content view. I'll try to post some code when I get home.

sent from my hero, which no longer sucks ass
Okay guys, at the suggestion/request of Konikub, who was told this couldn't be done, I, "Team LoneWolf" , decided to crack open the stock HTC Messaging application (Mms.apk), in order to investigate the possibility of inverting / applying a "dark theme" to the application.
It seems this has not been done before, and upon initial investigation, I can see why. Many of the HTC Sense applications share common resources (themes, styles, icons, etc), stored in com.htc.resources.apk. So, if you attempt to modify something used by Mms.apk, but stored in com.htc.resources.apk, you are going to unwittingly modify the appearance of other applications, and if other corresponding elements are not adjusted in those applications as well, you are going to have problems.
So, things that are "challenging" are the things I like to try and tackle, and inverting this application was a tough cookie, requiring extensive edits, in some cases to "undo" references to items stored / defined in com.htc.resources.apk, and rather, make them stand alone directly within Mms.apk. This required major edits to XML, Styles, Colors, local .pngs, and Smali/Java code. You wouldn't think simply themeing an app would require all of this, but Mms.apk did.
Essentially, what this mod has done, for the most part, is flip most text that was black, and made it white, and most backgrounds that were white, and made them black (inverted), giving you a bit more visual interest, as opposed to the stock "white" look.
For those running a dark theme on their phone, who prefer to use the stock messaging app (I use Handcent, lol), this should fit the bill nicely. Again, thanks to Koni-man for the "nudge" / "coaxing" to take a look at this.

Flash the attached (HtcMms.zip) via recovery. Also, let me know if I missed anything. It is certainly possible, as there are so many menu options / tasks that can be done, that I may have overlooked.
EDIT: MetaMorphs attachments added (morph_*.zip), to modify the default 'tap to compose' area from gray (shown in screen caps above), to black (screen capture), and another to return the application icon in the app drawer to stock color. DO NOT ATTEMPT to flash these. They must be applied using MetaMorph, AFTER you FIRST flash from recovery the original mod (HtcMms.zip). After applying using MetaMorph, you will need to, at a minimum, issue a Hot Restart, for the application to re-appear in the app drawer. It will disappear after applying the MetaMorph, and re-appear after a restart.

1. It changes the message icon at the top notification bar default.

3. Make the main message icon default color not blacked out.
Other than that very good work!!

3. Make the main message icon default color not blacked out.
Other than that very good work!!

Lol, I made it they way you described, since that's how I like it. If you have other preferences, have at it ;-) Those are simple personal preference tweaks.

Great Work OP!
Now gmail, mail, dialer, and gvoice??!!?! huh....huh?!?!?!
Wow, JS. Nice. I want to use this, but question. Does this include any of the mods that were put into it from Calkulin. More specifically, the compression fix and 5MB limit fix. It's fine if it doesn't. They're just good to have.

I modded this from a stock Mms.apk. I'm not familiar with the details of the mods Calkulin did, but I assumed they were to the framework, as opposed directly to the .apk. I'll have to look, as, honestly, until now, I've never really used the HTC Messaging app.
BTW, I'll probably knock out a few MetaMorphs shortly, with some "other" preferences, such as the mentioned black "tap to compose" area. I did it that way initially, but didn't like it. It looked like too much black to me and made it hard to differentiate the compose versus non-compose areas. I'll probably also do a MM to restore the stock application icon. I wanted to darken it to denote it is a changed / darkened version of the app.
Thanks been wanting this for a while. I knew you was going to give us something cool you was too quiet.
You are the man.

Okay, FYI, I've attached 2 MetaMorphs to the end of the OP based on preference.
The first MetaMorph will change the "tap to compose" area from the modded gray in the OP, to black for those who prefer it, as shown below:
The second MetaMorph simply returns the application icon in the app drawer to stock white.
Note, after applying using MetaMorph, you will need to, at a minimum, issue a Hot Restart, for the application to re-appear in the app drawer. It will disappear after applying the MetaMorph, and re-appear after a restart.
Nice job Js really nice looking man, you have done some really good mods for the Evo communuty and I use them thanks again

After just getting around to installing your rotary unlock mod, I am loving this!
Only problem is I can't install it. I go into the recovery menu, choose install from zip and then confirm, I get an error.
Installing update...
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported.
Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5.
It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and updater-binary) to create working update .zip packages.
Any ideas why I get this error? I haven't changed anything since I installed the rotary lockscreen. Maybe switching to Amon recovery?
This is pretty easy, just for reference I'm on a n900w8. Canadian Note 3, But I do believe it is the same on all?
First things first,
Prerequisites:
ROOTED Note 3.
A root file explorer (I use ES File Explorer)
A text editor (one comes with ES File Explorer)
Common sense.
1) open your root explorer
2) go to /system/csc/ and open others.xml with your text editor.
3) scroll down until you see NFC and "DEFAULT"

This may be a silly question, but I noticed you do not have the horizontal red and green arrow icon. Do you know what it is and how I could get rid of it?

I have a set to the left of those, with a solid green and red icon that I can't figure out. The one under Wi-Fi at least make sense, or indicate activity. The icon I have seems to just sit there. Thanks though!
One day when you get some time on your hands scroll through all your settings, and turn everything thing on and off and see what removes it, then let me know and i'll see what I can do to help you out ;p

It has been there about 12 hours now, since I activated the phone. I suppose I could try rebooting at lunch and report back.
Edit: I'm dumb. Rebooting made it go away. It must have been a remnant from activation, a confirmation that the service was activated successfully.
Sorry for wasting time and hijacking the thread!
while you're at it, any idea how to remove the blocking mode icon?
You can use wanam/exposed framework. Has an option for removing statusbar icons

NSA Mirroring is turned on.
It is not in the manual, or at least the copy I have. It could be an icon for an app you have loaded onto your phone though.
I would think you could pull down the notification window and see a matching entry??

Look for something in the others.xml involving blocking mode, But I have no idea if it would be there or not.
Like the fellow above me said, there are apps that remove status bar icons for you. (I just prefer to do it myself rather then install another app i only need for 5 seconds)

I also noticed this the first few days I had my phone, looked it up under settings>about>Icon Glossary, just says "Sent" and "received" for some data I'm guessing, not sure where
ANYways, I've got the Verizon version of this phone and when I navigate to the directory to edit this file, I open the text file and it's completely different than the file I'm seeing in this post;
I see the following:
Any reasons why my file is different? Where I could possibly find this NFC file for verizon Phones?
I like that NFC icon, but Aussie version never have that icon..

Please make that image smaller, i believe its against forum rules to post one so massive.
Is that a note 3? I'm on the n900w8 model. Not sure if that will make a difference but i even had a different NFC icon then you to begin with (a ugly blue N).. Let me know and i'll look into it

Black Toggle and Notification dropdown background with colored text for MDB08i.
Also, anyone that likes a different keyboard needs to check out Shaftamles thread (which he has had forever) and try some of his google themed keyboards.

I can Make one. Just make a copy your systemui.apk and framework-res.apk but I have stock copies.
It works. I like it, but if the notification is multiple lines, such as an email, the subject line is still super dark grey.
I would also like a stock one.

Yes the text in the notification. One line Is blue, middle section is dark grey, next line is white.
Are there any dangers to using this with MMB29Q, besides it just not working?

Just flashed it on my mmb29p without a problem. This zip makes a restore zip in a folder called ozop. Flash it to restore. These notifications don't work well with gmail. I use blue mail so it doesn't matter to me.
As a precaution, copy your current systemui and framework-res off to the side so you can get a full restore.

Caused some trouble for me on MMB29Q. I flashed the zip, the notifications theme did indeed change, however it produced some strange results with my pull-down settings, including altering the lock screen (this may be intentional?). Shortly afterward, I flashed the "return to stock". Phone now boots properly, but crashes a few seconds after putting in my PIN. No problem, I will just restore from last week's backup after work tonight. Too bad it failed I am a fan of your work. But no harm, no foul.
One other thing: is there a version of this mod without the center clock? I would be willing to try again if this were fixed. I will also post screenshots which may be beneficial.

Update: Recovered via TWRP easily. Screenshots attached of the mayhem that ensued. I don't pretend to know anything about theming, but it seems to me that most options are being mislabeled and this is potentially why the ui crashed. Perhaps because I used system ui tuner to move icons around? I am running stock ROM with ElementalX kernel, so the fault is more than likely on my end.
Update 2: As far as theming, the "StockblackNoteBlackToggleBG" zip is perfect except for the flipped navbar. If you could just switch it back to normal, it would be wonderful (also, dialog windows are rendering strangely - black text on black background). Thank you in advance. You're the best!

Try this one. The dark text on dark background will continue on gmail. It is an in-app issue. I already had this uploaded so I'll give you a zip to switch the nav bar back to normal. I had to pick a color to take the place of the dark text so you wouldn't have blue on blue. I can change it if you like.
The background is transparent so whatever is open behind this will show.
