I just received a "new" Photon Q thanks to a warranty swap from Motorola. When I got my 1st Photon Q last year, I used this thread to root the thing...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856480
That thread is ancient, though, and some of the links don't work.
I've been searching and searching... and I'm stuck. This is my 2nd day of searching, so I'm resorting to a new thread.
The phone is unlocked thanks to Motorola's unlocking tool.
I finally found & downloaded the 6.0.1.3 recovery from here:
http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Following the directions that are pretty uniform across the 'net, I keep getting errors. Is this file/image no longer good? Is there another way to gain root access? I'm not particularly interested in installing ROMs (not opposed to it, it's just not my main goal at this point.) I just want Root access so I can do a few minor tweaks.
Thanks to anyone who can help... this wasn't nearly this difficult the last time I did it!
Try TWRP, it auto-root's the device after flashing recovery.
Use this version until the official is updated.

Thanks for the fast reply!
So, I just download that & use it as the recovery image, right? As in, I use that instead of the 6.0.1.3 file from CWM that isn't working...
Sorry... not necessarily a noob, but it's been a long time since I've fooled with any of this.

No worries. TWRP has directions on how to flash on their page.
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/137
I just use the fastboot method myself. Just use that "test" image I linked earlier - or if you want official, use 2.6.3.1. I'm working to get the official updated, but it's been difficult coordinating with the TWRP team... especially since the device is now in so much limbo. I can tell you the test image works great, I'm still using it.

I am in need of some help. I had used the one-click root to remove clockwork off my TF and upgrade to the 8.6.5.13 image tonight......and then when I tried to go into the stock recovery I get a failure. If I install clockwork I can boot into recovery but can't get the stock recovery to work.
Can someone provide the image for the stock recovery for 8.5.4.13 and also instructions on how to get it installed and working??
It would be greatly appreciated - I have a feeling that if I can't get this fixed I may not be able to install any future updates.....
Oh, yeah....the one click root failed for me so I am no longer rooted. Will need to find another way to get root again.......
thanks.
Just root again using nvflash method
Go here... http://-rom-development.com
You will need to register with the site to download the files, but this will return you to full stock rom as well as stock recovery.
There is no such thing as stock recovery.
BTW..no links to outside forums that require regristration
Well thanks for raining on the parade pal. If u want to be a smart ass about it, then I will say this. If you have ever seen the exclamation point or android screen with gears while performing an OTA update, that would be a sudo stock recovery. It is needed to install official firmware updates and is accessed by "booting into recovery partition." Secondly, I wasn't aware of me posting an external link that requires registration a violation of xda rules. If it is, my bad. Just trying to help..as thats what we do here on xda...help others. If its not, then STFU.

WOW....A little butt hurt are we
Stock recovery
Ok, before I go too far, could someone provide the behavior of the stock recovery? If I boot into it and don't have an image to recover, would I see an Android guy with some gears that would then generate an error - due to no image to recover?
If so then I think the stock recovery is still there....I just have never used it.
Thanks....
That is correct. The "stock recovery" has no menu system. If you have cwm installed then it doesn't exist anymore. If cwm isnt installed then its there
If you rooted and then installed clockworkmod recovery, then you won't be able to access what is the stock recovery. If you don't have cwm recovery installed, then you have the stock recovery. There is almost nothing to the stock recovery, but the two graphics that I mentioned above, leading some people to believe that there is no stock recovery at all. Just because there are no options to choose from doesnt mean there isn't a recovery partition to install the firmware from. If you want the stock rom, go to asus's website and download the firmware. I believe you place it on your sd card and then boot into the recovery parition but holding down the volume down + power until at the very top of the screen it gives you the option to boot into the recovery partition by pressing the volume up button. At that point, the system should see the firmware and start installing it.
Thanks! I guess that I may be ok, will find out later.
The only wierd part is that I lost root and even though I am using the one-click method that uses the live ISO, I can't get root back. I may need to use one of the manual methods to get root again.
Thanks for all the help.

Ok, Now I have a major lesson learned - using one-click root - I "removed" root and went thru the reboots and then re-rooted it again and NOW IT WORKS! The one difference? I had a Droid X plugged into my pc when previously attempting to root and the process wasn't working quite right.
When I removed my Droid and unrooted/rerooted, the process went right and my TF is now rooted! So when attempting to root in the future, don't have any other Android devices attached - they may cause issues.
Lesson learned - thanks for all the help.

Hey,
I'm trying to install the [ROM] Team Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.2 - Moray [9/10/11].
I've got CWM installed (version recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img but also tried latest version from ROM Manager).
Each time i try to install the .zip it get's to opening package and then just exits to the CWM menu?
It's probably a common thing, but couldn't find anything from a search? Anyone got any ideas?
This has been covered many times so take the time to do a search.

I had to thank you Muffycheeks for your excellent answer. I am not sure why you did not at least give an indication about where to find the answer or what the issue is? Lucky this was posted in Q&A and not in the dev thread!
I am new to Xoom (only got it since yesterday) and have managed to get the bootloader unlocked and custom recovery installed. For some reason when I reboot the device the recovery is flash back to 3e (I suppose this has been also debated millions of times but I cannot find it yet...)
I had been able to flash one of the custom roms but it gets stuck in bootscreen. I wiped everything I could think of and followed a couple of advices and still not working.
I am downloading the other rom (as far as I can tell there are only 2 customs with one of them based on the other one) and will see if that works.
Sorry Addicteddddd for highjacking your thread but I have been searching for a while until I found your thread and I thought my issues were over to find the standard helpful XDA answer. Some people might have had their device for years but some other are quite new to this.
K.
EDIT: It seems that one of the recoveries do not advise if a ZIP file is bad and therfore comes back with no message. I suppose this is why this is happening.
I downloaded 3 ZIP files and they are all corrput. Not sure what is happening here but anyway.

I don't know if you used this guide but there is a bit of discussion of some issues regarding cwm recovery versions and some pitfalls while trying to flash.Check it out if you haven't
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249798
Also, how are you downloading the file? Are you getting the right version? If you are using the R4c v3.2.0.0 it should be called solarnz, not tiamat. The guide has the correct link.

I´m guessing you have a custom recovery installed?.
Get the latest paranoid update from HERE and the latest gapps from HERE.
Boot into recovery and flash ROM GAPPS and if necessary SuperSU and then reboot. Should work.

Hi there Litchi,
Thanks for posting.
I'm so bad at this stuff, I used the Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh. I really am a bit clueless on what custom recoveries have been installed. What I can tell you is that I have Paranoid Android 4 Beta with the corresponding GAPPS.
I tried doing Clockword Mod for backups but eventually just stopped trying, and used the backup provided in the toolkit (nandroid I think).
I installed the Paranoid OTA hoping that it would take care of me having to do it through my PC again since the drivers were such a mess last time.
Could you just provide a bit more detail as to the steps I'd need to take for that? I hate being so illiterate at this stuff.
Really appreciate any more help you can give! Thanks.

You really need to read the sticky at the top of this forum called [FAQ] [REF]★ All you need to know about Android | Read this before you post/root ! ★
It gives you all the information you need to know. We pretty much all here advise against using toolkits for the exact reason in your post, it leaves you knowing nothing about your system, what you have got or the knowledge to use it. These toolkits are seen as a shortcut, but please be aware, there are NO shortcuts
Please read through that thread a few times. Don't flash anything else until you understand the process, what you have got and how to use it. Please don't take this the wrong way but you are not ready to flash things yet. Even if you have already flashed something, there are holes in yoru knowledge that can have disastrous consequences.

It may be an issue with the CWM recovery which is what I assume you have installed with the toolkit, as thats about standard...
In android, /sdcard on the nexus 5 isn't actually an /sdcard. /sdcard is actually /data/media/0 so whenever you are looking in what you think is in /sdcard, you're not... it's /data/media/0. It's been like this since 4.2 Jelly Bean, when multiuser support was added to android. The theory is there will be multiple /sdcards, for each user that logs in. The default user is use "0". With me so far?
Before multi-user support, /sdcard for devices with no physical sdcard, was simply /data/media. Now, CWM never bothered to update it's code to point to /data/media/0, so even today, basic CWM doesn't know the full location of your /sdcard. If the updater downloads the files to /sdcard (which it should), then tells CWM to look in /sdcard for the files to flash, the files cannot be seen because CWM is looking in the wrong place.
Essentially, you should look at ditching CWM and it's antiquated configuration in favour of Philz Recovery or TWRP. Both use /data/media/0 correctly as /sdcard

Please forget the toolkit!
The only thing you need is fastboot.
download TWRP or CWM recovery.img and flash it in fastboot. Boot into bootloader, connect the device with usb cable to PC, open cmd in windows and type following:
fastboot devices Enter ... that should give you a number, means your device is connected
fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img Enter .... that will flash the recovery of your choice to your device. Then from bootloader you can select with volume up + down to boot to recovery. Do that - in recovery you can select what you want to do. Flash rom + gapps + supersu and you are ready to go.
Here is a good link for learning how to use fastboot. beginners-guide-on-how-to-setup-and-use-fastboot/
Learning fastboot is highly recommended - its the same what fastboot does, with 1 difference --> you know what you do

I found this just tooling around. Use your favorite file browser, I used

Could you explain in a little better detail on what you mean Enigmatic177... I'm pulling my hair out Hehe
If anyone makes or finds a working recovery please post it.
Itson is a zip file that was installed after last update it has the basics to unlock the boot loader. I unpacked it used Rom toolbox pro rebooted to RECOVERY did regular reboot system upgraded.
A couple if bit mapp errors 11111. Then I basically flashed CWM.
Before you do this the partitions change from ext2-ext4. I'd advise

I think i know what seems to be the problem. I think i might have accidentally replaced the boot img with the twrp recovery img. i did not make a backup before this happened. is there anything i can do to make my phone boot up to its normal image? thanks
Nope. It is officially a paperweight and no one I know of has access to the stock ROM either.

Hey
Has anybody found a custom rom?
Finally. Easy as pie
Ok, I downloaded an image (w5c_twrp_bumped.img)
put that img on the root of my sd card
downloaded Rashr from the google play store
opened rashr and tapped 'recovery from storage', navigated to external sd and tapped the image and tapped
ýes please'
flashed it. after the flash the phone rebooted into the twrp recovery.
then just rebooted back into the system
worked perfectly.
im new here im not allowed to post outside links yet, just google "w5c_twrp_bumped.img" should take you to a link for a download of that recovery
i got twrp now as a custom recovery. on my lg realm.

OK, I grabbed and extracted this. I used Flashify to simply flash the recovery (w5c_twrp_bumped.img) and it works like a dream on my LG Realm.
OTOH, trying the same on an Exceed 2 gets me TWRP, but it cannot mount much of anything and the backup fails. After failing, it tells me "No OS found, continue?" I continue and get the message "Appears your device has no Root, install now?' I am absolutely certain I have root, or wouldn't even be able to run Flashify, so I continue and it simply boots into the OS just fine. Perhaps the readme isn't complete, as I see the following file in the extracted folder (resources.zip) with no explanation of why it's there. It "appears" to be a flash-able zip that installs "itson" (whatever THAT is). Note that the Realm has this in the /system/vendor/itson, yet the Exceed 2 doesn't.
Have you actually used this on an Exceed 2? And if so, what am I missing here?

I'll do you one better. Just forget about the post you replied to, as it's convoluted as hell. Install TWRP 2.8.6 from here. Ignore the big red warning about the Realm, as he evidently hasn't updated the OP. You can view my notes regarding the Realm in this reply. Tested several times and verified working better than anything else available. Easiest recovery to install I've ever dealt with (all done with an .apk). The option to access via cold boot (battery pull procedure) is something to behold
Be sure to thank the developer, even if you need to create an account to do so. Very VERY nice work!

Before you replied I installed the version 2.8.5 from here:
http://androidforums.com/threads/twrp-2-8-5-0-for-realm-ls620-and-exceed-2-vs450pp.908704/
Is 2.8.6 better? Looks like the 2.8.5 can't be booted into via key combo from power off? Are there any other differences? I just used the Rashr flash tool from the market to flash 2.8.5. Worked flawlessly. This is actually my mom's phone and it wanted to do a system upgrade but I wanted to back it up first so that's the reason I wanted a recovery.
Pretty cool though, this recovery installs just via an APK!!!? That's amazing!
I'm tempted to install this on her phone next time she comes over... it should be fine right?
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

That one will cold boot with the battery pull procedure too. A little further down that thread you'll see I modded it to work correctly with the Exceed 2 in addition to the Realm. I like the 2.8.6 better if only that the dates of the backup are correct now. The 286.apk will work fine and overwrite your current recovery. If you leave it installed, you can always open it and reboot to recovery from within the app. If I have more time I'll post a screenshot, but running late for work. I think the screen dimming/timeout issue was fixed as well, but I haven't verified that. I normally disable that in TWRP anyway, as I like to monitor what it's doing during a backup/restore in case of errors.

THANKS!!!! I'll make it a point to flash that to my mom's phone next time I get the chance!
Hi
I accidentally deleted with TWPR the system of my OnePlus One and it seems I cannot install a new rom.
I downloaded gapps and the original Oneplus One rom (zip) file and also the android stock. None of them works. It seems I need a
different format/special rom do recover from this. To make things more complicated I have a Mac and most instructions I've found are for windows.
Is there any rom I can transfer after mounting and flash via TWPR? I don't know much about android development so I appreciate technical details in replies.
Thanks!
Exactly which zip files are you trying to flash? What are the filenames?
Transmitted via Bacon
use a toolbox and an option to flash to stock

i assumed you fixed this since we have not heard back from you. Just an fyi - can you at least let people in your thread trying to help know you have been successful in doing what it is you were trying to do.
If not then simple download any rom transfer to your phone and flash it with TWRP and thats it. May I also suggest you dont use a toolkit since it will not give you the knowledge to fix your phone in the future
Indeed, i fixed it last night. Thank you very much.
It was too late for me to be able to do the captcha (actually, even now it's difficult).
I was using the Mac OnePlus One toolkit which is a real life safer. I already learned quite a bit but I was grateful to have the support of the toolkit. There are quite some hoops to jump through and I needed to use fastboot. Due to some reason I wasn't able to just flash a rom.
Cheers

Here's a hint. Fastboot IS how you flash a new room for the first time had you not used the tool kit you would have seen this and done it that way lol
