Bricked Device - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I'm quite new to this. Anyways, I found an old Nexus S lying around in my house. My brother claimed he tried to put a custom rom on it years ago and it bricked.
I was wondering if it is unbrickable, i've been searching for countless hours and no luck.
The phone doesn't turn on.
It isn't recognized by the computer when i plug it in. (i might not have the drivers idk)
It heats up if I attempt to charge it.
I don't know if it is possible to unbrick ?

How hot does it get when you charge it? It should get pretty warm, but not hot to the touch. If the battery is still good, try using Wugfresh's Nexus Root Tool (google it, can't post outside links yet), that will let you do anything you need without having to manually use ADB or flash through recovery. It will walk you through installing the correct drivers the first time you run it, then do Flash Stock + Unroot from the main screen, with the soft-bricked/bootloop option selected. Follow the prompts, it will download all the stock ROMs and stuff and install them for you. If that doesn't work, it might be irreversibly bricked.

One possible test is that if the soft key buttons light up at all, it is not yet bricked.

You could try a new battery, they're like $5 on ebay. With a new battery, and if it doesn't enter fastboot after charging (hold power and volume up) then it would seem to be truly bricked.
---------- Post added at 02:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:28 PM ----------
You may also want to try a different cable, if the battery is dead and the cable isn't carrying a charge it would have the same effect as being totally bricked.

I'm certain the battery works. I heard jtaging it will unbrick it, but it cost like $40 to jtag it which isn't worth it since phone isn't even worth $40

JTAG is the only way to check if it will still work. The only other option is the resurrector mod which involves desoldering and soldering microcomponents on the main board.

Atrix 2 not turn on

Hello guys I'm here because my Atrix 2 will not turn on.
The only thing is the white LED lights ...
What should I do?!
thank you!
Hmmm... What were you doing prior to it not working? Dropped? Something minor occur resulting a reboot? When did you buy it? Finally... Any physical damage on the castor screen from impact damage?
I've rooted the phone, and before when I've reboot the battery appear on the screen...
I know with my captivate I used to be able to take the battery out, plug it in and it would boot. Try that... Yank tha battery, plug it in, and try to boot it
hi i have the same problem, i tried what you said but it still wont open.
i think its like a bug cause when i woke up it just stoped working with no reason!!!
p.s. sorry for my english
Try using the fxz file. My phone used to be glichy and do weird things. I flashed it and now it works fine.
Can u boot into AP fastboot mode?
no the phone is like totaly dead i cant even do a hard reset nothing at all....
could it be just a bad cable and it wont charge?
Do u still have the warranty? If so I'd just get a new one. It sounds to me like u have a bad phone! Did u get it from best buy?
no i just bought it from e-bay this phone is not yet released in europe
---------- Post added at 11:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:19 AM ----------
"BOOM" the phone just opened by it self WTF is going on with motorolas? lol i am just happy for not losing my money.
Oh in Europe? I assumed u were in the states! My bad im sure u mentioned it. I just wasn't paying attention.... lol. So u see nothing at boot ? Not even the M in the start? Nothing at all?
Well the only thing I can think of at the moment is:
Press the volume buttons at the same time and hold them down.
Then press the power button.
In the menus look for AP fastboot.
If u can see that u can flash the fxz. Im sorry. Its 1:30 a.m. here in California! Im so tired. Im sorry if I couldn't help u! :-/
it was doing nothing at all it was totaly dead but some minutes later it just opened by it self and works great again what to say......those phones are going to get me crazy. lol

The same thing happened to me after rooting and flashing Romulus. Used the phone a week or two, never rebooted it. Battery ran dead one night and wouldn't boot the next day. It seemed to not want to take the power from a usb hook up(pc), white lcd light and even self booted like in the quote here. Finally, during a self boot, plugged it in to a wall charger and it recharged no problem.
I definitely think there's a glitch with NO POWER AVAIL in this model's bootloader somewhere, and I'm in the US! Kinda afraid to turn the damn thing off again though...
Any delving would be nice!!!
Help us Obi Wan, You're our only hope!

It's not ROM related, it's dead battery and charge-mode related. I think that there is not enough battery to boot into charge mode. Power cycling can help if you catch it and plug in at the right time.. or you could always go MacGyver on it... see HERE for some previous discussion on this subject. Glad you got it to work, though.
Also, you need to reboot your phone more often than once a week (try like once every day or two) - or it can start to slow down and lag.
white led means insufficient power..
you need to use your wall charger...
what if there is no Led what so ever?
tried charging the battery and it seems it did, because it got a little hot
but stiLL didnt turn on a bit, its Like compLeteLy dead now.
i was trying to fLash the stock rom 4.0 with rsd Lite and when it 'reboot' to start doing its stuff, it never booted again
and after that im not able to see any lights on my phone, (tried aLL key combination)
(ceLLphone has no guarantee, bought it on ebay)
do i need to send it to a repair shop, or change the circuit board?
or just get another one?

If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be making money in a very weird way.
i saw that thread before and i couLdn't find it, thanx for the Link.

Is it bricked?

I have a Rogers Skyrocket and I was trying to update CWMR touch.
I tried several times through the terminal emulator and it failed. I must confess, I wasn't being careful this time. My attention was divided as I thought it was business as usual. I tried searching for apps on the Play Store to flash them, but Rom Manager cost a few bucks and Recovery Manager didn't work.
I was going to reboot into download mode to use odin and my attention drifted away. When I looked back at my phone, it was off. I tried turning it on, but no response. I know it had at least half the battery left. I tried a battery pull, but nothing. Plugging into the computer or wall to charge does not initiate the charge.
Is there anyway to fix this?
I'm gonna be honest, it really does sound like a hard brick. Try another battery pull and hold the power button while u reinsert. Any vibration at all means u have hope
Damn. Will Rogers replace it? Or am I going to have to pay for it?

can you get the download mode or the recovery?
if not the i'm pretty sure its hard bricked.
but you might try a jig to force it into download mode.
you can tell rogers it was a failed update by kies, and the will send out a refurb but they will want the broke phone sent back to them oh and i hope that's brand new(less than 30 days)or they might say no.
i got two refurbs out of them this way.

try it and see, if you bought it directly from them i think they just give you a refurbed one on the spot, ok just read previous post, so maybe not on the spot.
or keep it charging for awhile to make sure the battery wasnt dead. once you know the battery has a good charge and still wont boot, do a battery pull for like 10mins, then try, if still nothing then it looks like a hardbrick

yes rogers will replace it but they may charge him a little if the phone is more than 30 days old. he can try to charge that battery as you stated and hope for the best.
i can give him link to a good jtageer 50.00 is what he charges, if indeed the phone be bricked.
i bricked mine and it would vibrate but nothing would happen.
your only hope is to try download mode.
i thought i bricked the other day it would show the i727 screen then turn off. but i could get into download mode.
Unless battery meter was wrong or there was a massive drain in power within a few minutes, then the battery shouldn't be dead. I did flash CM9 nightly last night coming from official Rogers ICS if that has anything to do with messing up battery stats.
In regards to the 30 day thing, my wife bought me the phone several months ago. I don't think I bought an extended warranty either.
What is this jig/jtag thing? I remember reading something about it a while back when I was using the HTC Dream.

a jtag is needed if there is no bootloader on the phone. no bootloader means a dead mobo black screen no recovery or download mode also jig wont work = dead mobo and jtag is required.
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-jtag-brick-repair/
if you are interested in getting it jtaged.
also rogers will charge you a little to replace the phone but not much.
ohh forgot, a jig is a loop used to short 2 pins in the usb port to force the download mode.

full replacement if under 30 days otherwise a nominal fee will be required because it is software related not a hardware fail.
they will send him the phone but when they get the old one back and run ther tests thats when the fee will come in.
also the playing stupid trick might work as they will not even bother to check the phone but they might and he will get dinged.
i'm sure if he sends the phone in rogers will just send him a refurb rogers is pretty relaxed when it comes to customer service as i stated before i got two refurbs easy enough.
i sent my hard brick in 3 months after and they fixed it for free and checked it off as a faulty pcb. they just replaced the pcb and sent it back

well im sure with you phone it would be because the mobo is dead but if it were a smashed screen or something like that i don't know as i stated my two refurbs had previous owners **** on it.
Should I even bother trying to get my phone fixed with a jtagger? I prefer to keep my phone than swap for a refurb.

REALLY bricked my Droid Charge

I got it rooted, I got a custom rom, didn't realize I needed to mount the system (never had that step before), then it got stuck at "Samsung" so tried going back to stock, and apparently flashed the wrong md5 file, or didn't flash all of them? I wasn't sure why four downloaded, and then bricked it. I've tried every trick I can find, battery, sd card & sim card out, plug into computer, hold down volume buttons, plug battery back in, nothing. It's simply not responding to anything. I did contact Samsung, since I read somewhere here someone else did a serious hard brick and Samsung replaced it for them, but also I was wondering about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242466
Has anyone tried it? How did it go? Would you recommend sending in my phone for replacement or would you recommend trying to make it unbrickable. I would ask the help of someone I know that does a lot of tiny computer work like this.
Thanks!

when plugging your phone into your PC, does the PC recognize it? how about ODIN? If not (for either), try re-booting your PC and try again.
If so, then use the "return back to stock" MD5 file with PIT file via ODIN

Yup. Tried that too. Tried volume up, tried everything about 10x over. :/ Thanks though.
I don't mind doing warranty exchanges for legitimate hardware issues, but if it's something I caused, I don't want to abuse the system. Honestly, if you can't get to download mode, suck it up and pay for this service: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-droid-charge-jtag-brick-repair/
I'm not sure if unbrickable mod was every fully finished on this phone, and even if it was, it isn't exactly a beginner's mod.

with the battery in (or plugged in) and pressing the power button, do you at least get the Samsung logo or nothing?
if nothing, the battery could be completely drained. plug it in (to a wall, not PC) and leave it alone for a good 30 minutes - then check back to make sure that it has power (you might see the battery charging icon). after then, I would let the phone fully charge up and then try the ODIN process again.

then I'm pretty sure that could be the issue. that has happened to me once before where the battery just completely died on me, and not even plugging it in would cause it to boot up. give it some time...
Ok, I ordered a Jig from the guy on ebay, he makes them in the US, $5.50, free shipping, He even waterproofs them he says. I'm :fingers-crossed: it works before I try sending it off anywhere.
Charging the battery didn't produce anything :crying:
I suck!!!
I just saw (this morning) a vid of a captivate (or fascinate?) user who bricked his phone and couldn't get a response out of it. He then proceeded to rig an old charging head to run roughly 300 kilo ohms to the 4th and 5th pin. Once he plugged it in, the phone was forced into download mode immediately.
I won't be liable for anything I'm saying in this post, but I would suggest you take a look at that vid and see what you can come up with.

Wrong. If the kernel is corrupted it won't charge. (at least that's what I've noticed) If you have a battery charger (I do since I keep spare batteries) that may work if it really is a dead battery.
If a USB jig doesn't work (it did for my friends Infuse, but I've never tried one on the Charge) then I'd go in and get it replaced.
Feign ignorance and tell them it won't turn on after you took the OTA.

Feign ignorance and tell them it won't turn on after you took the OTA.

still doesn't hurt to leave it plugged in overnight or for a few hours - you can't re-fry it....
but agreed on the last part - tell them that the OTA bricked/fried your device

Leave it plugged in overnight, then try the jig. Doesn't work, get it replaced.

Thanks for the responses everybody. I tried leaving it plugged in to just the wall charger, but seemed like the phone was heating up and nothing else was happening after an hour so I unplugged it. I don't think anything is physically fried, just really need to get the programming worked out.
They shipped the Jig already, and it's coming from the US, so it probably won't take but a couple of days to get here. I'll let you know as soon as it does and I get to try it!
Dog gone it though, I don't have a battery charger. I've got 4 batteries, and a battery charging station for my original Droid Inc, DH is using. I wish I wasn't so low on money! I would order the battery charger today too, just in case.

Hard Bricked...

Last ditch effort for a solution here.
I have a 16gb white that's been performing just fine... i did unlock the bootloader and root, but had no issues. That was several days ago. Today, I installed a flashlight app from the play store. (Droidlight LED Flashlight by Motorola). Once I ran the app, the camera LED came on for about 2 seconds, and then both the LED and the screen went dark. The battery was at about 80% when this happened.
The device is now completely non-responsive. Holding down the power button and any combination of keys does nothing, and there is no charging indicator when it's plugged in. I've never bricked a device before, surprised this seems to be caused by a play store app (although if it's truly bricked, I suspect some sort of power issue).
Thanks for any advice anyone can provide before I have to RMA this thing. Any Ideas?
Can you get into the bootloader? Hold Vol down + power

Nothing works? You might be the second brick of the day
You could try to remove the battery, maybe that'll help.
edit: ofc try RMA first.

Hook it to a charger for some time and then try to get in fastboot mode once in a while, then go to recovery and delete the cache and do a data factory reset and reboot. That is what i would do at least.

Can't get into the bootloader. I've tried the following combination of keys...
Vol+ and Power - nothing
Vol- and Power - nothing
Vol+, Vol- and Power - nothing
Power on it's own for 2+ minutes - nothing
---------
Contacted Google and they're getting me an RMA... regardless, I'd be careful about running that particular app, or possibly any flashlight app.

What do you mean with second brick, does this happen, if you install a Custom ROM?

I think he means someone else started a thread as well indicating that they also had a bricked phone. I read that thread before I created this one, as mine wasn't related to fastboot or recovery. My brick occured from actions that occured during runtime, and root wasn't even acquired by the app that caused the failure.

No it doesn't happen unless you don't do your homework and screw something up. If you read and learn it's very hard to hardbrick your phone. But this is the second one I've seen today. In both cases there are unique reasons it happened.

I flash my Phone with custom ROMs since the beginning of the Nexus era. To root and to flash my Nexus one took me like 2 hours to complete it (I admit, that I received some help back then).
For me it doesn't look here like it happened because of anyone's fault. The phone is available since this week and he's already rooted. He doesn't look like someone, who is new to it.
drain and recharge
if you have a secondary phone use it for a few days and leave your Nex5 to drain. Should be completely drained in 2-3 days. Then charge it up and try to enter bootloader.
PS: you could also try to open the phone and manually disconnect and reconnect the battery...

I'm going to let the battery drain, but there's literally no power running through the phone right now, it's doing nothing. Something was fried, I'm afraid it will take a lot longer than 2-3 days for the battery to naturally drain.
I'd love to pop the back off and unplug the battery (that was my first thought) but I'm not doing anything to risk getting the phone replaced. I'll RMA it.

Q: dead or still alive?

Hi all experts.
I have one inquiry about my Samsung galaxy S II lte (SGH-1727) Issue.
at the beginning I read too much here but I couldn't find any answer for my phone problem.
the problem happened yesterday, when I was using my phone as usual then suddenly restarted, this issue happen many times before and its ok for me, it tried to restart but suddenly stopped( black screen), I removed the battery then I tried to restart it again, I felt the vibrating start, then stopped, without any respond at all till now, I tried many times to remove the battery and restart it but without any respond, I connected it by using the usb cable, but nothing, ( no vibration, no battery charging) the only thing is my computer can`t recognize the hardware.
I tried to do hard reset or anything, but without any respond.
Kindly, I want to know weather if this phone is totally spoiled or there is something I can do for it to make it usable again, I have a good knowledge about WM5,6,6.1,6.5. but a little bit about android.
thanks
What operating system are you on? Rooted? Do have have a nandroid backup?

Did u read about the sticky power button from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176593.
if you tried resetting then where you able to get it in to recovery mode
could be bad battery and/or battery contacts.
need more info

I have been read the button problems for sure, but I think it is not related to the button, there is no respond at all, even not charging, usually if I use the charger, it should start charging, correct me if I`m wrong.
the battery was full and working fine, I tried to clean the connectors too, nothing changed.

could be a bad cable, bad battery, bad phone port, or hw failure.
id keep trying to revive it by either changing cable/charger and/or battery and keeping it plugged in for a long time, if all else fails then it probably a bad mobo or memory, happened to my sons s2 where his was getting hot while recharging and his phone died, no response of any kind, under warranty i think they replaced his mobo

so it means there is a possibility that the battery can spoil suddenly, without any previous indication.
nothing with USB cable.
anyway, thanks for your good information, appreciated.

if battery is removed and phone is plugged in it should vibrate, mine does, seems as if yours does not have any life so mobo would be my first guess.
and yes battery could just up and die, but would give some symptoms b4 hand

Trullty Dead?
so i have spent lots of time looking for this issue with my Hercules. i had beeb trying some roms and i think i bricked it, bad,
so odin can see it (gets a yellow) but;
i can not power on the device, get it into recovery OR download mode,
my pc cant get to the information on the phone (i have tried with SD in/ out SIM in /out)
the pc makes the noise when i cycle thru power, but the screen shows nothing,
i have installed Kies but it dosent see the device,
there hasnt been a good post that comfirms that my phone is now a paper weight,
but there has to be a way other than spending $40 to have it repaired (not including shipping)
USB JIG looks interesting but i cant see how that will help in this case...
to be honest this is my first time at ROMing around with a Galaxy,
previously i had an Gooapple 3G and was able to ROM around quite abit no issues with a bad brick like this i was able to save it before
but if anyone has any ideas or can confirm its a hardbrick let me know i only have a few hours between jobs to fix it and cant at night gf takes laptop to night shifts.
thanks for your time reading over if you have questions about anything please ask, i payed for the phone outright to put on Rogers so there is no warrenty anymore and Rogers wont cover repair.

If Odin sees it there's hope. Keep trying to get into download mode. This should be helpful, read it all http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26056924

Oh thanks, I just noticed your comment because I thought there is no chance to get my phone alive again, I think I should try this, I have one question regarding the usb jig, is there a specific JIG for every samsung galaxy model? or it is all the same for the micro USB Samsung galaxy phones? and in this case, what is the indication that will make the device run again, is there a special software to install? or after plug this JIG I can be in the bootloader? and is there any possibility to get some of my data or contacts again? thanks for your respond regarding my phone issue.
Jigs don't with on this device. Don't waste your time.
You need to try to odin the stock firmware.

This is incorrect. Jigs do in fact work. However most of the time you will be able to enter download mode without one.
I have had my skyrocket completely unresponsive to any input/button combinations. I tried my homemade jig and was able to recover via Odin. Without the jig my skyrocket would not have been repaired.

hi toyes
just a question regarding your experience regarding this issue, do you mean it was totally unresponsive? not even yellow sign? not even vibrate by connecting the USB cable? and regarding USB JIG, is it the same with 301k resistance? or there is some modifications?
thanks a lot.

Basically I had zero response from the phone. Was playing around with the jig and buttons, put the phone down with the jig in it. Looked back 5 mins later and it was in download mode.
I do think there is something different with my device though. Ever since I got it back from JTAG it has never wanted to reboot. Selecting reboot just shuts the phone down. Every once in awhile it reboots from recovery ok, but that is about 1 in every 10 attempts. When it doesn't reboot I need to long-press the power for about 30s - 1m to get it to fire back up. I am thinking it is some type of hardware issue but not too concerned because at this point it is still 'working'.
