Nexus 5 speaker lint, or mono sound?! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey folks, I was messing with my phone today and inadvertently covered up the left speaker on the bottom which reduced the volume by 90%. I covered the bottom right speaker, no appreciable change.
It looks like the right speaker is full of lint! Any pointers on how to get that out of there? Maybe I should pull the case open rather than jamming needles in there?
Then I was reading this article
http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2014/01/29/nexus-5-review-the-long-term-owners-test/
And it said the Nexus 5 has a mono speaker. Waaaaaiit a second. There are clearly two speaker grills in the bottom. Doesn't that mean stereo sound? I thought I had a lint problem, and now perhaps they're just fake holes?

Nope, just one speaker. The second grill is only for aesthetics. Sucks, I know.

Ghetto!

Did not know that! Interesting.

This thread made me laugh LOL. But on a serious note yes the right grill is a microphone. It's the phones main microphone for say when in a phone call or recording video that's what it uses.

Yes it's funny. There are a million threads about this, yet no one uses search before posting.

[Q] Speaker Question

I noticed today that my music is all coming out of the LEFT speaker on my phone. If I cover it with my hand to type, I can feel it heavily vibrating on my hand and the music gets heavily muffled. I tried covering the RIGHT speaker, and noticed no difference at all to the music volume/quality. Is this normal? What is the RIGHT speaker used for?

This is totally normal, the left speaker is the actual speaker while the right is a dummy that i believe houses the microphone.

[Q] After replacing the screen, earpiece grill is not working

Hi there,
I replaced my broken screen with a screen+frame which has the grill on the screen. However, after replacement, I can not hear any sound when somebody calls me. I need to use the speaker or the earphones to talk to somebody, pretty annoying. Do you have any idea what I did wrong or missing?
Thanks.

Did the speaker grill have any coating or covering on the inside? Perhaps you either disconnected or tore a ribbon cable that was connected to the speaker (if there was one)? I had similar issues with my screen replacement, but had issues with no cellular signal. I'm going to have to take mine apart again to investigate. I would suggest the same for you...

Hey, I had the same problem when I first replaced. The solution is easy. I forgot to plug in one of the cables which apparently increases the cellular signal. See the pictures attached.
I can not open the grill, for the sake of not opening the screen from the frame I bought the screen with frame and grill. So this defeats whole purpose.
Anybody has any idea about it? Is there a special connection for earpiece speaker?
Are you sure you have the ear speaker installed ? I don't think you have to open the screen to change the speaker.
In step 19 in the iFixit guide they remove the speaker BEFORE they remove the screen.
By the way where did you ordered the screen + mid frame? How is the rest of the quality ?

Hey Thanks for this. I installed it as well but still not working, interesting. I'm going to reopen try to fit it again.
I bought it from here: aliexpress.com/snapshot/6480736262.html?orderId=65692759745232 - DHL sent me the item in less than one week.
There is also alternative: vifocal.com/lcd-display-digitizer-replacement-with-middle-frame-for-oneplus-one-64gb-16gb.html
Quality is ok, I had ghost swipes before. It's not happening any more. Maybe because of software fixes (I'm on CM12 nightly, Lollipop). Apart from that, the colors are a lil bit washed out. I got used to anyways Sometimes under bright light (outdoors afternoon), greens look so weird. Overall I'm satisfied because I dropped the phone a lot in the past and mid frame was full of scratches. Now I have new mid frame.
Here they said the ear speaker is extremely fragile so i think it's
possible you broke it.
How is the speaker connected anyway ? I diddn't find any connector in the teardown.

So it's obviously not the original one :crying:
But contact the seller that you didn't get an original one. You can get a refund. And write him a bad critic on aliexpress that it is not original so he can't trick more people.

it might not be the original one but it saved me from the time without any phones. I gave him a good rating etc. Asking for refund would be unfair in my opinion.
Yes I also saw that xda recommendation, maybe I broke it I don't know. WIll give it a try tonite. Ordered an earpiece speaker just in case from the aliexpress for 6 bucks, but i'm sure it will take at least 1 month to arrive.

Thanks everyone, I solved the problem by putting the speaker unit horizontally 180 degree flipped and it started working.
Nice :good:

K1 Speaker may be faulty

Just wanted to ask if anyone who has the K1 about their speakers
I feel on my unit the sound coming out of the top speaker is louder than the bottom speaker is that normal? for example at max volume I can feel the vibration of the sound from the top speaker but not the bottom.
Also I can make the bottom speaker frame click by pressing on it like the plastic is slightly separating (This in particular is concerning) but I wanted to see if it was a manufacturing thing I cba RMA'ing for a replacement just for that to have the same issue.
It happens when you press on the top of the bottom speaker with your thumb kinda like jiggling a tooth you'll hear it and feel it move.

speaker are ok for me..
About the clicking it depends..
On mine it's not the speaker that move but a little click came from the rear tablet panel...but it's definitively not faulty...only normal plastic assembly

I've got the clicking when pressing around speaker grills on both top and bottom edges. Not sure what to think about it but I don't like it. Might return it and keep the Dell 7840.

Audio coming speakers on side but not from front grill; normal?

Hey all. I know the title of this thread is odd, but let me explain. Sadly I dropped my K1 today (never carry a tablet under your arm). Thankfully it was in a case (nothing heavy duty) and didn't fall far, but did land on it's side (left side if you are holding the tablet with the forward facing camera on the top). The screen is fine, but I got worried that something may have happened to the speakers. I downloaded Stereo Test (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jasonfarrell.stereotest&hl=en) to test them and they work, but I noticed something odd. The sound seems to be coming from the speakers on either side of the unit but not the front facing grill. Is this normal?
Yes it is perfectly normal. I have never dropped mine but I have noticed the same thing as well when I am holding the tablet in landscape mode with my hands gripping the sides.
I think the older tablet had holes for the speakers facing towards you when you looked at the tablet but the newer K1 has ports on the ends instead now, so firing side ways?
EDIT ignore me, i can see the holes on the front

Because I'm highly paranoid, can anyone else confirm this? Please?
This is what it looks like under the rubber. Just two holes that the speakers point up to

Can't make out the holes but I do see that there are no speakers underneath the rubber grill. Thanks.

Do you get sound through both bottom speakers?

I thought the audio speaker volume was a bit low and noticed sound is only coming out of the left speaker hole. It's really obvious if I cover up the holes in turn. Could you tell me if yours is the same please?
There IS only one speaker...
Ah, well that would explain it. Silly me, I thought - two speaker holes = two speakers!
One is speaker and the other is the mic
Silly me thought the exact same thing today. I randomly put my phone up to my mouth and noticed the sound went away after covering just 1 side.
Thanks for clearing that up guys!
