[Q] Not able to take MicroSD out from slot. - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Been using XT1045 for almost a month. Recently bought a microsd and phone will report "unexpected unmount" periodically.
When I insert the MicroSD card, I don't feel the resistants from springs like how you feel when you insert SIM card. When I tried to get the MicroSD out, I will have to drag it out instead of "push and pop" like the SIM card.
Is my XT1045's MicroSD Slot defected? Thanks guys.

The problem is with your sdcard. Moto G 4G doesn't supports class 10 UHS-1 sdcards. Motorola is working to solve it. There are other threads here talking about it.

Problem solved.
The microSD is Sandisk class 10 from Amazon, Moto G LTE has problem to keep it stable to work.
I don't have any slower card, but from the forum this is one common problem with high class microSD cards.
If you have the same problem, you need to purchase a lower class Card, maybe Class6.

Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 card

Bought a Kingston 16GB SDHC Class 10 card for my Desire a while ago, and found out it is not a happy match. Simply too unreliable. Went back to the good ol' trusted Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 6 card.
Anyone got any experience with the Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 card on the Desire?
Hi,
I have a Kignston µSDHC 16Go class 10 and I'm very happy with it. What do you mean with "unreliable ?"
My device was becoming noticably slower with this card instead of faster, and I got read errors continuously in apps like media players, Astro File Explorer en Root Explorer. Possibly it was becoming slower because of the read errors.
A chkdisk on Windows 7 continuously gave errors and a chkdsk on EXT4 Recovery sometimes was even unable to fix errors on it.
Reformatting only helped for a short while, then the read errors would reoccur.
So I finally gave up on it and trashed it.
I read everywhere that the Desire is very picky when it comes to memory cards.
Well, it seems like your kingston card was dead, it shouldn't give any error on a chkdsk.
Did you know you can get it exchanged from Kingston under warranty ? It has a lifetime warranty. I had to do it for mine because the first one I had was defective from the beginning, I couldn't format it at all.
Trust me, I have this card and it works flawlessly since I got it exchanged !

I did exchange it already, the 1st one truly was crap, far worse than the 2nd one, the 2nd one was slightly better but still crap. So I decided to ditch Kingston altogether.
Lexar cards
I've had good luck with a lexar class 10 32gb cards. No one I know has any transcend cards though.
I can't use Transcend micro SDHC 16 GB class 4- I had to pull the battery almost always after using an app that accessed SD (camera, gallery, music player etc)
I've found that samsung has been a dream with good speeds and no issues (as of yet...). As for the Kingston i got a class 4 card and that worked fine for me.

Ooh nice! Thanks, will buy one now.
Transcend 32GB SDHC Class 10 card on my Desire for 2 weeks, feel fine.
Got the card. Works flawlesly. Also increased the SD card read cache to 2048kB, I get a write speed of 11+MB/sec, read speed of 25+MB/sec now. Nice

[Q] What SD card are you using?

What SD card are you using now for your HTC Sensation (XE)? Tell your brand (important), size and tell me whether your phone is rooted.
The main reason why I asked is because I recently bought a SD card that has issues (Click here to take a look at the issue I am currently having) and I feel like buying a SD card with no problem. I have the 8GB which came with my phone when I got my phone, but I gave it to someone else.
My current SD card is SanDisk 16GB Class 4 SDHC Card. don't know if anyone having this card has been affected with the issue I'm having.
A-Data Class 10 16 GB - phone is rooted, no issues.

Phone is rooted and no issues.
Same goes for a previous 16gb Class 2 Sandisk and the original 8Gb that came with the phone.
Just a quick point, have you tried removing and reinserting the sd card several times? I had something similar happen during a phase of swapping cards 16/32Gb etc and it was down to a dusty/dirty connection.
I have a class 10 16gb sandisk SD card and never had any problems with it, very fast. I had a class 2 card in it at one point but that was a mistake - it was noticeably slower. Class 10 cards are more expensive, but faster, than lower class counterparts.
My phone has always been rooted.
As for your problems, worst case scenario, it could be a dud card or you may have a faulty connector in your phone - try somebody else's sdcard first and see how that goes. If you get the same problem with another card, its your phone, unfortunately. If you have no issues, then you need a new card, obviously.
Best scenario is a file system problem. Try connecting it to your PC and repairing the file system and see if that helps.

It's possible, or the SD card isn't seated properly. I do find it slightly odd that it does mount, but only in read-only mode. Have you tried completely erasing and formatting it? There could be a bad sector or something on it.
SanDisk 32GB Class 4. Works fine, not fast when transferring files but not a slouch either. Good all rounder for price/performance/size IMO.

Class refers to the minimum write speed the card is capable of. Often times, good quality cards will outperform their class ratings. Ex: A Class 4 card is rated to WRITE at a minimum of 4 mb/s.
I have a Sandisk 32gb Class 4. Write speed is in the range of 6 mb/s depending on the size of the file.

Any class of card will work in your phone, but try and get 4 or above, as class 2 is really just a bit too slow (though it will still work)
PNY 32GB Class 10. Works like a charm. Not rooted but S-Off
Hi everyone. The 8gb which came with the phone was not sufficient for me. I got myself a Kingston 32gb class 10 card.
I also had a question. I have most of my apps on my sd card (quite naturally). How do I transfer all of my existing data/apps to the new card? Just a copy-paste or is there a more sophisticated method?
EDIT: My phone is rooted
I'm using a SanDisk microSDXC 64GB UHS-I, speed upto 30MB/s, running perfectly.

I don't know what cards would be compatible with this phone, but in the past I've found that formatting a card on my PC has sorted non-working ones out on my phone. Have you tried that?
Yes i've tried formatting it in all possible formats.
sandisk worked

known bug - microSD not working
According to several Nokia.com discussion threads, this is a known bug with the 820. The card might work for a few minutes, but soon goes corrupt. The card can be re-formatted OK in a PC, and phone will recognise it again (but only for a few minutes). If you've changed the settings to store photos etc on the card, the camera will also stop working when the card goes corrupt (because it can't store the pics anywhere).
Apparently a patch is due one day to fix this...

I can confirm this through experience. Pretty bad issue since the phone only has 8GB of internal storage.
I have tried the following cards and have had the same exact experience:
Sandisk Ultra 64 Class 10
Kingston 32 Class 6 (I think)
Trancend 16 Class 10
For me, the SanDisk Ultra UHS-1 with 64 GB works fine WHEN I reformatted it on the PC to fat32 with this tool: fat32-format.softonic.de
Before, the phone recognized it, but crashed and I couldn't move files to it. After formatting, no more problems
I have this card here
SanDisk Ultra 64 GB MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card with Adapter (SDSDQU-064G-AFFP-A)
Worked as soon as it was inserted to the phone and I have several videos and photos on it. 58.X GB formatted capacity. I would not recommend using a card that is NOT listed as compatable with the phone.

TurboTuck, thanks for the info.
Have you loaded the microsd with more than 10Gb? Issues usually occurs when more than this amount is loaded to the card.
...mine is working perfectly with a 16 GB class 4 microSD sandisk card.
Anyone tried a 32Gb class 4 microsd?
Just to throw in my .02.. I reflashed my 820 last night and the SD card is still working fine.. It is an 8 gig class 4 I believe. I have a 16 gig class 10 somewhere that I will need to try.
I'm still holding off on really celebrating, though.
Kingston cards work always for me

I already loaded it with 12Gb and has no lag at all.

Moto G 4g LTE - Sandisk ultra 32gb microsd card won't mount

I picked up the Moto G 4g LTE version recently hopping on the fact that they added an sd card slot. Anyway, I purchased this http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra-MicroSDHC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B007XZM6VG/
microsd card hoping for some nice expansion. But for some reason whenever I insert it it says damaged sd card, tries to format it, then says blank sd card, and basically loops this process. Now here's the weird thing, this sd card works fine (can read and write) in other people's phones, but just doesnt seem to work in mine!
I even tried my friends 32 gb microsd card and it worked (it was a slower class 6 varient),I tried *my* sd card in that persons phone, and it mounted and worked fine, the sd card works in my PC also.
I'm wondering if I need a slower speed card? Maybe class 6 or 4. Because I read up on another guys problem on here, his is freezing but he got a slower 32 gig card and now it works without a problem. I know he was having a different problem but I'm wondering if the phone is having an issue with class 10 cards.
Anyone having the same problem or have any idea what might be going on?

Hi,
As I mentioned on the "other guy"'s topic, I experienced this kind of issues with my previous phone, which were entirely solved by replacing my 32 GB Sandisk class 10 card with a 16 GB Samsung class 6 card. AFAIK, fast cards may cause malfunctions with some Android phones, because of the access response times.

Had the same issue. resolved by getting a different brand and lower class. all issues resolved.
I'm using this card bought thru Amazon for 17.99 ------Samsung Electronics 32GB EVO Micro SDHC with Adapter Upto 48MB/s Class 10 Memory Card (MB-MP32DA/AM)------
I have had 0 problems with it and high benchmarks, I use to use Sandisk but after multiple problems with multiple cards over they years I have completely abandoned them for Samsung and have yet to have a problem.
The problem comes from that, some cards won't fall back to lower performance level and thus causing issues for the device that it is inserted in.
Some devices does not have problem with that tough.
Another reason could be the file system used, but that's less likely, although not very rare.
And one more thing is that brands like SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston etc are the actual developers of the SD technologies and sometimes you may get a product that is using newer technologies, which often causes troubles.
I purchased same Sandisk micro card from Amazon as OP did. I got same results. It is sitting here on my bed with RMA on it to back to Sandisk. Just got a new speck sheet which was posted from the motorola forms that says the following:
Micro SD UHS-1 "The card will work, BUT the Moto G 4F/Lte WILL NOT SUPPORT UHS 1 - SPEEDS.
So it appears, a slower speed card is in order. I just had to purchase a Samsung 16 gb class 6 card. Would rather have had a 32 gb but could not find in class 6.
Random and Sequential of my 32gb Samsung Evo UHS-1 in my Moto G LTE using A1 SD Bench
Thanks so much for the input and advice guys! I was too impatient to order another sd card and wait for it to ship so I went and bought a random 32 gig class 10 card from a brand i've never heard of called "Monster digital" and it works perfectly. So I'm not sure what really fixes it, if it's a brand thing or size or speed or what. But my change from my non working sd card was Speed: UHS-1 -> Class 10, and Brand: Sandisk -> Monster Digital
Regarding the SD card issue. I tried with three separate phones with a 32gb class 10 and and a 16gb class 4 -- failed on two of them, but works fine on one of the phones. So there is definitely a build quality issue ( and/or difference ) between the phones, aside from the mentioned 'supported sd card class.' Both of these cards work fine on all other devices ( pc/laptop/tablets including old SD card readers with adapters )

Wanted to give an update. Tested with four devices now ( 2 black, 2 white ) and First one ( white ) worked, next two did not work, but the fourth device ( black ) it worked to detect 32gb sandisk without fail. So there is _definitely_ a difference between them from device to device -- maybe even assembly line quality control issues depending on week of manufacture, who knows.
Very interesting (and puzzling). Do they all run exactly the same version of Android? Are they all exactly the same model (eg. XT1032) and the same internal storage capacity (8/16 GB)?

Oops, Moto G LTE is 8 GB only, sorry.
Yes.. exact same model/capacity and OS, all ordered within the same 1 week period ( two being RMA )
Can verify that the XT1045 4G LTE performs very well with a 64GB SDCard inserted internally, ALSO..with a 32GB MicroSD card inserted into the USB / Charge port..and runs both very well, and with both cards mounted..

I have a Moto G LTE on order, and am wondering if the various problems people are seeing are due to the file system used on the card: exFAT or FAT32. I would assume the newer SanDisk cards are formatted with exFAT. Does the flavor of Android on the phone support exFAT ?
Another issue I've found in the past with some other devices and ROM's is that if the card is formatted as exFAT, it might need be set up as a primary partition and not a logical drive (using MiniTool or some such).
But we'll see what happens when the phone & card actually arrive
As far as I'm concerned, my cards were all FAT32-formatted, both the malfunctioning SanDisk and the Samsung that worked well. Nothing to do with exFAT vs. FAT32 then.

I am getting 'Removed SD card' / 'SD card removed, Insert a new one' error by using exact same Samsung 32GB EVO Micro SDHC. I could not format it by using Moto, so I did a full format in my PC, Same result. The microSD symbol is UHS-1 (one capital U with '1' inside') - matched Amazon's picture.

Nonetheless, I'll take the safer route you guys talked about and try for a lower class speed. Samsung Evo 32GB SD Card not working?

I just got a Samsung Memory 32GB Evo MicroSDHC UHS-I Grade 1 Class 10 Memory Card without Adapter For my new Moto G 4G. I put it in, it said "SD Card removed. Insert new SD card" on the task bar. I then wiped it and tried to mount it, but it then apparently the file system didn't work. The SD card doesn't seem to work on this phone. But here's what really got me- I put it in my 3 year old HTC Sensation, and it worked 100% perfectly.
Am I to believe that a 2014 phone is inferior in supporting peripherals to a 3 year old 2011 phone?
Anyway, unless there's something I'm doing wrong I'll need a new 32GB or 16GB SD card. Anyone link me one?
