My wife is getting my gs3, But..... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

The wife gave me a gs4, with the condition I unroot my gs3 and give it to her. Sweet, until when I connect my gs3 to my computer odin, never sees it. I am running:
Odin ver 3.07
Android version 4.3
Baseband version I535VRUCML1
Kernel version 3.0.31
CleanROM 8 core Edition
Hardware version I535.10
Do have samsung drivers installed.
I am assuming/hoping that is more info than is needed.
My plan was to use odin to put stock kit kat on and lock everything back up. But when I enter download mode and connect to my computer(whether odin is open before or after) Odin never puts a com port up, aka it never connects to the phone. Am I running the wrong version of Odin? If so, which should I be running?

i normally use odin 3.07 but i updated to stock kitkat with kies this time without a hitch. if youre locking it down for her thatd be the simplest way.

for me when i hooked my phone up it told me there was an firmware update available. if thats not the case for you try going to tools and firmware upgrade and initialization. you got the phone on a tw rom right now or aosp? that might be part of the problem if its on aosp.
p.s.- tell the wifeh to stop hovering, pressure dont help fix phones XD

Nothing happens when I plug in my phone. If I try telling kies that my phone model is Sch-i353v , it tells me to check the sticker and try again

Did you check in device manager? My problem was fixed by updating the device driver through device manager.

Consider yourself lucky given the high likelihood locking up the boot loader after returning to stock.
I would stick with CleanROM 8, nandroid backup your current image, wipe data and hand it to her for the first boot setup process. She will never know the difference and never be prompted to take a lock-it-up ota...
Fwiw, did you try different cables?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

Sorry, I fixed this last night and failed to post. I tried two cables originally. Eventually I got frustrated and tried a third cable, and everything went through like a champ. There may have been some cussing at this point, but then there was beer. So it worked out
Thanks a ton for the responses folks!!

Just a min, update failed...I think cause launcher pro was the default home...trying again damn it.

Let the BRICKING begin!
Would love an ODIN of this ROM... looking forward to it!
Installed Kies... Update process starts but Kies crashes. Anyone else have this issue? I'm currently trying to unroot to see if that makes a difference.
Edit: Exact issue is: MSC.Thunder.FirmwareUpdate has stopped working.
Does it regardless if I choose to backup or not the contacts and data.
Edit 2: Unroot changes nothing.
Edit 3: Doing a factory reset on the device doesn't help either. WTF?

Wonder if it'll be 2.2.1...
Ok so I just got back from writing an exam and will try to reinstall Kies. I tried 2 times to update through my computer this morning and once on my wife's PC (She has a Captivate as well)
All 3 attempts it says that Its downloaded the update but then it fails when it tries to install. Now remember I've not rooted or anything, so i think that there might be a newer version of kies or something...going to look now.
But anyways it tries to update it says a bunch of stuff like: You phone Jsomething1 and the update is supposed to be Jsomething2...I dont get it.
Remember I dont hack or mod phones in the slightest, so I have no clue what this J1 (mine) and the update of j2 is...?
The update is big though, takes a few minutes to download and I have a 16mps download speed...
Downloading this version of Kies and will try again:

I'm with Rogers with an AT&T Captivate (Rooted and Cognition 2.3b6). Will I be able to update my device to it? I much prefer the Rogers software than AT&T's. I don't care if I have to use Odin or erase everything.

No, not recovery mode.
PC runs W7-32 for what it's worth.
In the meantime, I did some research on the error I mentioned above.
It appears it's a very common issue with KIES.
There are a few workarounds.
So far, I tried the "SIM-out" method and it doesn't work for me.
Next, I'm trying the regedit method.
Will report on results.
@silvertag: your upgrade worked fine or you haven't tried yet?

Nowhere you have to check Kies server to know it's been released. There is still no confirmation from Rogers last i checked.

[Q] Need help rooting Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959W from Wind

I have been trying to root the Samsung Galaxy S 4G from Canada's Wind Mobile. I wonder if anyone out there with Wind and this phone has any success. This phone is model SGH-T959W, which is different from the T-mobile SGH-T959V. I thought they were similar, but not really. This phone was just released in March 2012, and has the latest firmware.
Details:
Model no.: SGH-T959W
Firmwware ver.: 2.3.6
Baseband ver.: T959WUQLB6
Kernel ver.: 2.6.35.7-T959WUQLB6-CL965783
Build no.: GINGERBREAD.WUQLB6
I have successfully rooted several phones before and am good at following instructions. However, I have pretty much tried every method suggested on this Galaxy S forum with no success, including SuperOneClick, manually using ADB, Fastroot, Z4root, Samsung Kies Mini, Heimdall One-Click, etc. Some of them simply said "Failed", ADB and SuperOneClick seemed promising with progress messages for a couple minutes and then just hung forever. Kies Mini won't even recognize the phone even though it's a Samsung and I have updated all drivers.
My main goals of rooting the phone are to try to resolve the random shut-down issues that's been plaguing the Galaxy line of phones, and to run Titanium Backup. Eventually, I'd like to upgrade to ICS. I'd welcome any help.
thanks,
Billy
Unfortunately your phone is not supported on XDA. Do not use any flashing tools from this forum. You have a high risk chance of messing up your phone. Good luck.

Can someone push the kies gingerbread tarball to mediafire or bittorrent or something.
I'd like to collect a little more info.
I will also need someone with the phone to test for me. You need to be familiar with and running linux.
I don't play well with windows and may need to remote to your linux box and get on the phone.
Hi bhundven,
Thanks for offering to help. I'm the OP of this thread. I'd like to help you help me, but I don't have a linux box nor familiar with linux. Also, what is "kies gingerbread tarball"?
I do have the phone that I can do the test for you, if you can show me what I have to do.
thanks,

Is there a Thank You button that I can click on to show my appreciation?
I have followed your link and read your other post on the 959W. A couple questions:
1, is the USB JIG a must? What does it do exactly?
2, I was not able to root the phone at all, by any of the methods found for the 959V on this forum. So, how do I upgrade to any other ROM's without rooting? Will the use of this JIG solve this issue?

The jig will force your phone into download mode no matter what, unless you are hard bricked. Its not necessarily a must but highly recommended.
I was in irc with bhundven and the other user and as long as you do not flash bootloaders using heimdall to flash something like the antonx one click kernel will get you root. Then you can flash any of the roms. Just remember dont EVER flash bootloaders until he can get a tarball and make a Heimdall one click for the 959W.
A good way to get root using heimdall is follow this post.

Like I said tho dont flash bootloaders PERIOD.

Werd. The only way the JIG will not work, is if you have hosed your bootloaders (specifically the SBL).
It would be awesome if someone got their T959W unbrickable modded, so we could play with bootloaders.
More so, it would be awesome if someone could get me a kies or leak tarball for me to mess with.

No one has sent me a kies or leaked tarball for the T959W.
Following the directions below is much like the red pill in the matrix. Once you take it, you cannot go back to what you had.

Some of the kernels do not install root to the rom. So you will also need to install a rom that comes with su (root).
Most of our current roms do, including cm7 and cm9.
Installing cm7 or cm9 should be the same as the instructions in the thread, but I'll reiterate this once.
Get the boot.img (see the cm7 or cm9 threads)
heimdall flash --kernel boot.img
Let the phone reboot. When you see the "Galaxy S" screen, pull the usb cable and pull the battery out of the phone.
Put the battery back in the phone. Put the backdoor back on the phone (so the battery doesn't fall out).
Hold the vol+ and the vol-, then hold the power button until you see the "Team Acid" screen. Then let go of only the power button.
When you see the clockwork mod recovery, let go of the volume buttons.
Plugin the usb cable and go to "Mounts & Storage" and enable usb storage. Copy the cm7 or cm9 zip file to your sdcard.
Don't forget to safely unmount the storage on your windows, mac, linux box before disconnecting the cable or unmounting usb storage on the phone.
Unmount usb storage on the phone.
Go back to the main menu.
Factory Reset & Wipe data
Install the cm7 or cm9 zip from the sdcard.
Report any issues on the cm7 or cm9 thread, ask any questions on the respective Q&A thread here in the Q&A forum.

Hi there, I have been looking for a way tu root my cellphone. I'm from Mexico but I lived in canada for a while.
so i bring my cellphone samsung T959W from canada!.
So I have been reading your posts from july when you said that you was comparing the differences between v and w version and i arrived to this post!
so I did this!:
1.- I download the sdk of android to put my cellphone in download mode
2.- I used heimdall press flash and wait until the samsung screen pull the cable and battery.
3.- press volume buttons and power button then I realize that now my cellphone when i turn on it says exclusive for t movile
and after i pressed volume buttons and power the acid screen didn't appear to me also when I'm in recovery mode there is no such option as install just the update option and when i try to put the cm9 it says that it couldn't confirm the signature
also if you need the tallbar or the thing you said... just let me know what to do! I'm noob in this kind of things!

What you need to do is download this Heimdall one click that is just the kernel.

Run it just like you did the other one and then you will have a custom recovery. After that you will be able to flash the roms you want.

I had never heard of "framaroot" before and I always like to know where software is coming from before I run it.

[HELP] Sort of Bricked my GS4

Im new to owning an android, and thought it would be a good idea to root and flash a custom rom onto my Sprint Galaxy s4 sph-l720, Not a good idea. I found some good tutorials to flash the stock rom back onto the phone. I've tried every guide and tutorial there is, but everytime, odin fails. I don't know what i am doing wrong, i may be trying to load the wrong firmware, i am not sure. I was on 4.4.2 Kitkat when i flashed my first custom rom onto my phone, my current custom rom is on 4.4.2, This is very frustrating and at the moment, i do not have a working phone until i can get Odin to stop failing. Thanks for reading. Quick replies would be appreciated!

custom binary blocked by frp lock

Got myself in a bind. Bought a new Note 5 today to upgrade to 64GB. Forgot to OEM unlock, and the phone is bricked for the moment. The new image N920TUVU3DPG1 isn't available to download yet. Any suggestions, or does anyone know where the new image can be found yet? What a rookie mistake! Smart Switch in emergency recovery tries to flash N920TUVU2DPD1 and fails. Downgrading doesn't work either.
same here. where can we get it from?

Just downgrade to an older version via Odin if possible. It can be done on Verizon so I don't see why not on yours.

I tried the previous version while in download mode using Odin. Loaded the stock rom in the AP slot and started it then it failed pretty quick. The com shows connected before I hit start but it still fails.

You have to make sure you have the correct firmware! You should be able to see which one is already on the phone while in recovery mode.

I think we're stuck with a very expensive paperweight until Samsung releases full firmware for the N920TUVU3DPG1 update.

OK, thanks. Looks like we aren't in the same situation though. I can't get into, or flash TWRP.

Hope u fixed ur problem, I'm still on Note 4, was waiting for u to fix the new firmware for us last month, and now we just got another one, so shocked Samsung is actually taking care of the Note 4 N910T,
My rom boots up, but can't see sim card, external storage, wifi doesn't connect and so forth, I guess they did something with the new MM that @dsixda kitchen doesn't work correctly somewhere anymore,
need to learn Ubuntu, not easy with no help,,, I made an external drive with 16.04 but need to java development and figure the rest out, not easy with 2 kids.. and wifey..
and u r also in FL, by the way thanks for the updater script for the past v5.1.1 roms we had...
Samsung keeps raising prices on these phones, ridiculous no reason the new Note 7 will be $849 cause they r only making egde style phones.
I'm glad they pushed me to my limits, first it was HTC, I had all the HTC phone till M7, for when they had the first tmobile dash windows phone.. haha..
don't know whats next, maybe crapple... no rush since the note 4 is still rocking good,
but the Note 7, water resistence is awesome is the only kool thing I guess.
Seems like I'm having the same problem frp lock and drk has anyone found a solution yet. I can't seem to find any way to fix this yet. Appreciate any help in advance
I could help with this issue, just let me know if you need my assistant I would have to remotely do this to accomplish this thanks..

Stock Firmware

I have the Samsung Galaxy S7 that I just received about a week ago from AT&T. I am (was) running Android 6.0.1. I have the SM-G930A variant and was running rooted touchwiz. I tried to revert back to stock firmware, but was careless and used the wrong Odin files, causing my phone to brick. I was using stock recovery. When I try to use the Smart Switch program, I get to entering my serial number and when I click ok, the program crashes. Can you point me to the right Odin files or how to keep Smart Switch from crashing? If there's no solution, just let me know so I can tell my parents and get grounded until I can move out.
