So I've noticed that test builds of MX Player Pro become available here however it's much easier to receive updates through the Play Store automatically rather than having to regularly check the website for new test builds. Many app developers use Google+ Communities or Google Groups that use Google's beta-testing and staged rollouts feature to automatically keep people in that group up to date with the testing version of an app so that if somebody is marked as a tester for the app on their Google account and they install the app through the Play Store then they will automatically receive the test version of the app rather than the regular stable version that most people will receive through the Play Store, this encourages more people to become testers and submit bug reports as well as makes the app updating process easier for testers and ensure that they're all up to date so they're not submitting bug reports for an old version of the app. Is there any chance of having something like this for MX Player Pro? I had a look around and couldn't find something like this but please show me if it already exists.
EDIT: If this could happen then it would also be very helpful for the custom codecs too.
TL;DR
Anyways, someone has already asked before, and the developer said he will think about it for MX v2.0. The developer actually explicitly stopped using Play Store beta in the past for some unspecified reason.

These are the main concerns in android beta test.
1. For each and every minor update the changelog is to be entered in all supported languages. MX Player supports around 70+ languages & it's very difficult to enter the change log 70+ times for each and every minor updates.
2. As of now the test builds are mostly bug fix versions, not the one for testing new features. So, only recommended for those who has reported/facing the issue. They are getting informed through problem specific thread. Only they can report the particular issue is fixed or not. If it is in the case of beta test community once you opt in for beta & you will continue to get beta builds untill you opts out. So, it can't be used with average users for bug fixing.
3. We have planned to use a closed beta test community for the upcoming major upgrade v2.0 in which new features are to be tested before landing as stable. So, please watch this forum. We may announce the beta test once it's ready to test.
4. Regarding the custom codec, it's very difficult to maintain the custom codec for each and every test version. It will be compiled only from the ffmpeg source for stable version. Anyhow I will consider to compile the custom codec for beta too once beta testing is started.
Thanks you both for the very quick and helpful replies.

Regarding #1, I did not know they had to be published for betas, would it not be adequate to put something along the lines of "see changelog at https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/" (with the actual URL to a changelog) in each language or something? I guess even just the URL alone would be adequate and you wouldn't have to edit it for each language, it would only be for the few beta testers who wouldn't mind anyway.
Regarding #2, just because something is mainly bug fixes and not features does not mean that we'd prefer to test it than be on the stable build. I see your point about the average user, could this perhaps be worked around by changing the title and logo of the app slightly for beta builds like how Google do with Chrome and Chrome Beta? So the beta app could be called MX Player Pro Beta and have a little beta strap on the icon or have something inside the app that makes it obvious that you're still opted in for the beta and a button in a menu to take you directly to the opt-in/opt-out page?
Regarding #3, I will watch out for that, thanks! Do you have an ETA for v2.0?
Regarding #4, I'm a bit confused as to how you publish test builds of custom codecs, I though that because of this post you only have test builds of certain custom codecs at certain times, so you could just put the test builds in the play store for the custom codecs that actually have a test build

My first 2 points are the reason.
One more point I have forgot to mention is that beta builds are not immediately rolled out. When we tested last time it took some time to be rolled out completely. Not everyone is getting the update immediately after uploading to the playstore. So, it is not the efficient way to test the bug fixes real time.
Releasing a seperate bata is again going to a head ache and will make confusion. There is no way to switch to stable version untill or unless the user updates the stable build. Otherwise we have to maintain two applications separately.
Be Patience till we call for beta test for v2.0.

Ah okay, well then for the moment is there any mailing list that I can easily subscribe/unsubscribe to for updates to the test builds of MX Player Pro or the custom codec for ARMv7 NEON?
This forum is the place to watch regarding updates.
ktsamy's custom codec thread has all the updates regarding his custom codec.
Regarding MX Player bug fix versions, the developer will reference a beta version whenever one is created to address a specific issue highlighted in a forum thread here. The developer always posts test builds on his own website here: https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build

Hello everybody,
like I guess quite a few people here, I develop for Android in my free time, and this is my second app. It's a finance tracker, hopefully an evolution to the well-known MoneyWise. I decided that I wanted a new one since, although MoneyWise is definitively useful, it's ugly and its usability is a little bit too cumbersome.
So, I made LBudget with the Material Design principles in my head as much as I could and, if any of you uses the Google+ app, you'll hopefully find the navigation relatively familiar.
The app is still in Beta phase (using the Google Play platform) and, because of the current condition of Android L, it will remain as such at least until a stable release is commercially released. Nevertheless, I would like to use the time until then for the app to be tested and improved. If you would like to contribute by installing it, you'll first need to follow the annoying Google Play standard procedure:
Join the testing community at https://plus.google.com/communities/117254163315407088886
Register as a test at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/org.jorge.lbudget (use the same account with which you joined the testing community).
Download the app in the link that the aforementioned page provides once you become a tester.
For reporting bugs, requesting features, or such, I want to really encourage you to utilize the project GitHub issue tracker, but if you don't know how to use it just leave a comment and I will "port" it to GitHub.
Also, if you're interested in contributing but not using Android L yet or simply don't want to install the app, you can contribute to the translation project at https://crowdin.com/project/lbudget
Went to check this out, but it says I need a newer SDK version. I'm not on L, anyway to make it compatible with 4.4.4?

Well, the app is compatible with L+, so understandably if you try to install in 4.4.4 you cannot. Probably it is feasible to adapt the app to 4.0+, but my intention was knowledgeably using only the new features of L to become familiar with it.

Hello, and welcome to XDA!
I find those things inaccurate, as the notification area estimate (including percent complete) rarely matches (or comes close to) the Play Store app estimate. That also begs the question on responsibility...are you talking having time remaining within the app, or in the notification area?
Right now for either, it's a fight against time. With the former, you are dealing with an older version of Google Play and Google Play Services, the responsibility of Google and that version (guessing 6.x where current is 8.x) is critical security updates only (if any at all) - no feature requests allowed. The latter scenario, probably relies on the former for information, but if not, it would be the responsibility of your ROM developer (e.g. Samsung Touchwiz 4.2/CM10.1/et cetera). They are in the situation of getting only critical security updates (if any at all) as well. After all, Android 4.2.1 enters it's fourth year of existence in November, and the attitude of Google is once a new codename has been officially released, all attention goes towards the new version (so the older stuff quickly becomes "abandonware").
CyanogenMod has been good on keeping older Android versions alive. Not so much for themselves, but for the older ROM's that borrow their code. The recent StageFright problem (dubbed SF1.0 as there is now a new batch of vulnerabilities) CM went back as far as 10.1/4.2.2 to patch the problems. With latest SF2.0 and the recent release of Marshmallow/6.0 I don't know if CyanogenMod will go that far back for their fixes this time (I am watching, as I have some Android 4.4.4 stuff to patch and plan to base off of CM11).
That was the long. The short being, since 4.2.1 is no longer a priority, I don't see it happening. Sorry.

Hi,
Placeholder threads aren't allowed on XDA so this thread is closed for now. Please contact me when you have a download to share and we'll open the thread again for you.
Thread re-opened.
Okay! here is the official (not beta) app! Please download it and test it out and report for Buggs or anything that's on your mind about the app.
New update coming version 1.1
Just tested the app and I found some minor issues:
Some buttons don't work in small screens
You can't click buttons however you want, you have to click them in order in order to acces them
Text is being misplaced
As this is my first ever app, it is going to be alot of unstableness (lets just call it that)
About version 1.1
I could not find a way to fix the button issue without crashing the app on click of the button.
I decided to have one button on the home page that links to another page that has the other button. It is not convineint but it is better than before and it makes it using the app a little bit more/less simpler (depending on how you see about it). I feel it makes it more simpler but hey, evrybody thinks differently
Update to version 1.1
I finished the new update and here it is! Please report any buggs or something wrong and dont hesitate to ask for suggestions
There is soon coming an app update (V.1.3) that will make it work on smaller devices. I will make the text somewhat smaller to support them. It will also leave space for other information.
Release for 2.3?
I might release an app that works for android 2.3, please kindly thank or reply to this post if you agree. The app works perfect on 4.0 and up and I don't really know if anyone still uses android 2.3 since nearly every old phone has a well working ROM for 4.0 and up.
Update to version 1.3
Whats new:
Fixed UI and added more information in app informatiuon.
Added a new event.
Check first post for download link
Update to version 1.5
Whats new:
You can now see who's online!
You can now see how to connect to the server!
Updated events.
New permisson, internet (used for the ''who's online feature'')
Update to version 1.6
Whats new:
added a file a flight plan page
Updated events
Fixed bugs
I have started an open source project to support Chromium + custom patches for adblocking:
https://www.bromite.org/
What is Bromite?
Bromite is Chromium plus ad blocking and privacy enhancements; it started as a port of NoChromo and nowadays adds more privacy-focused patches and is maintained against the latest stable Chromium.
Development & donations
Please join the development on Github for improvements.
Donations are welcome and help supporting development and build server costs!
Download & availability
Bromite is available for download from the Bromite Official website, which points to the Github Releases for all the downloads, and via the official third-party F-Droid repository.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Does Bromite support Google Sync, Translate or Data saver?
No. This is not a limitation of Bromite but of all Chromium-based projects in general, as general public is not allowed to use Google's APIs for free unless when using Chrome.
Q. Does Bromite require root?
No.
Q. What is the SystemWebView?
It is the core component of Android for all web page visualizations. For example when you access a new wifi network and need to activate it, that is using the SystemWebView. If you do not know what it is then you do not need to install it.
How to enable DNS-over-HTTPS?
See this wiki page.
Q. Can you add dark mode/some cool themes?
No.
Bromite is about adblocking and privacy.

@pato2015 let me reply here to stay on topic: yes, I also noticed this problem yesterday...it's due to a build setting in Chromium. I am rebuilding it with the fixed flag and will take some hours now to complete.
Tomorrow I'll post again when it's ready.

It would be good if you could compile the official version which is v61 at the moment just like 'ponchofiesta' did with Chromium instead of this dev version.
This version you did is development version with many bugs.

I assumed that all tagged versions are stable releases; can you point me to the official explanation about this? Like, how do I know which tags are stable or not.

This might be due to missing codecs; I suggest checking again after I release a more recent tag, then reporting a bug on Bromite's github issue tracker otherwise.

Can you open an issue on github? I need to know android version, architecture (ARM or ARM64) and the sample video that fails.
I also suspect that some codecs are missing; I have found some information about how to enable them and will try; if anybody else has more information about how to enable all codecs on Android, please post here or on the GH issue
Edit: I am now building with codecs, it's going to take a long while..so keep tuned and I will post when builds are done. This means I restarted the build for the red blink too.

- I just installed it from bromite.org and it is actually v64.3242.0 not v63 as stated above. How come?
- Change log says: "added x86 target CPU" so is it already included? If yes, the bromite.org site still only have radio button for ARM and ARM64 for download... no x86
- I guess the Bookmark sync will not work in this either as Google disabled it for third party builds, right?

Don't know. The source code tag is exactly what I posted, the Google Chromium developers have probably changed the internal version string but not the tag.
If you build from the tag 63.0.3239.6 you will get the same version you found, not something I am responsible for.

The Google API keys are not embedded (would be pointless, I cannot pay for the quotas needed for a project of this size and the free quota would be exhausted in a blink); but you can always make your own and specify them via environment (not sure how that works on Android).
The only thing disabled are embedded API keys; everything else is enabled (except NaCl, still buggy compilation even after my patches).

No worries, I do this because I want an adblocking browser for myself (without root), and thought I'd share the build for others too. If I match the server costs I am happy already.

Thank You looking forward to a great app.
Thanks for owning the maintenance & upgrade of this beautiful app.
However, I have few issues related to APKGrabber
- Whenever, i click Ignore button, in a few seconds, I see a FC.
This is on Asus Zenfone Max pro m1, stock android, non-rooted, bootloader locked, non-twrped phone
Log option do not work all the time. i see an empty screen while i click on log from the right 3 vertical dots
- I would like to visit APKmirror instead of downloading from it.
Is it possible to provide an option to copy the link ( I mean click to download / Long hold to copy the link kind of option)

I think if both methods ('old APKUpdater'; visit APKMirror and new APKGrabber; direct download) could be available as option in App preferences, that would be great and serve both needs.

Hi,
Artem here from APKMirror. I'm glad someone revived APK Updater, so kudos on that!
However, the setting you added to directly download from the site now turns the app into a leech which uses up our bandwidth without giving so much as an ad or page view in return. We had an understanding with the previous author about this, and because of them we actively helped him with the fast API and did not block his app. This direct download addition to APKGrabber now, however, goes against all of that.
Please remove it, as it's against our terms of service.
Thank you for understanding.

Hey,
sorry, didn't know about any agreements. New release is out, bringing back the old behavior. Furthermore, i deleted all previous artifacts containing that stuff.
@Archon810 is anybody actively maintaining the API? I would like to get in touch to propose some questions about it. That would help making APKGrabber an up-to-date, stable app.

I'm hoping some action can be taken without penalising the developer, having detrimental effects on APKMirror and the average user

If there aren't to many probably nothing will happen otherwise direct linking will probably just be blocked.
Edit: I love the new ignore button right in the updates window.

Cool, was just putting it out there because more often than not its just a handful of people that tends to ruin it for others.

Yeah so far so good thank you for the updates. Continued fine tuning version detection would good.
When it would auto download from apkmirror we didn't see where it would download them too.
Is your app setup for the Google Feedback for when it crashes? I just sent a log of it crashing.
Can you please add play store link of the app to be updated?
Thank you.
Glad to see this project revived.
Though it still seems to struggle when in background on Pie - actually, I can't remember wether APKUpdater could even achieve a successful background scheduled search - it will start but won't ever finish.
Getting to its UI will show it still hasn't been able to fetch the installed apps' list & actually start the search. (VPN used + WiFi only setting ticked if relevant)
Also, APKGrabber updates never are found after just opening the app but only when a manual search is launched regardless of the auto option being active.
Also, if I may, I'd like to submit a couple of ideas :
- For when notifications are set to show up only when updates are available (or maybe even in other cases), I think it would be nice if the notification could get dismissed as the users gets to the available updates page.
- Available themes are ok but now not one seems coherent with the app's icon anymore. Replacing them with a tweakable theme engine would be better suited to each user's taste.
Great to see APKUpdater revived! It was a long awaited news!
Are you planning to increase API target to Oreo at least? This is one of the few apps on my phone that still targets Nougat
FYI, APKGrabber is available on F-Droid via the IzzyOnDroid Repo.
The app is now live at https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/hemker/apkgrabber/ too.
