[Q] Sideloaded app... safe? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I've been a lurker on here, and post rarely, but I was wondering if I could get a bit of assistance. A friend of mine emailed me a Pandora app, said it was cool. Its a different design, version 1.7, labeled "Bad Seed Customs" on the front. Really slick interface, a bit slower than I'm used to, but its all dark so I'm good with it due to battery life savings.
It appears to have the same permissions as the market version of pandora.
How can I tell if its safe, and not like a keylogger or something? I installed it while on airplane mode and scanned it by Norton, it didnt flag it...but I'm still nervous. I like the app, just am paranoid. Apologies if this is a noob question!

Google it, Pandora bad seeds custom. Looks ok
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app

Be it dark, light or of any color, it doesn't have any effect on battery life since our Nexus has a LCD panel.
- Sent from an IceCold Hammerhead!

Most likely it's safe but this kind of reflection should really occur before you install.

Hmm... didn't know there were no battery savings. Thank you for that info, noted. I do like the design though, a lot more than stock pandora.
I did think of this prior to installing; was in airplane mode, installed the app, scanned it, uninstalled, left airplane mode... it couldn't have really stolen data, right?
I also did google it, I didn't really find much. I found an old XDA thread, which had a ton of replies, so I'd say it would be fine if I had gotten it from there but the download link had been removed from the thread... the rest of the stuff is just like no-name sources saying "hey here's some candy, get in the van, download this file bro" kinda thing. Turns out that this version is no adds / unlimited skips, according to the google results, I'm assuming the Bad Seed Customs folks hacked the app... worries me more lol.
Talked to my buddy a minute ago, turns out he got the app from a buddy of his, who got it on some website... probably the google search results. Uhg, dilemmas.

[Idea]Achievement App!

I just randomly remembered someone suggested this on Twitter a LONG time ago.
What if there was an app that gave achievements for things you do on your phone, kind of like the PS3 or Xbox360? lol
I'm thinking a message appears on screen like the new Superuser app (the one in the little default gray box that says "----- has been granted superuser permissions") with the "Achievements" name and stuff. What do you think?
2 problems with this:
First: What would we acheive? "Dalton sent 200 text messages in one day - 30G" boring.
Second: If it was something like that ^^ It couldn't be an app, it would have to mod pretty much everything, or have support for pretty much everything. And it would just be exhausting. "Dalton Installed a new ROM - 15G" I suppose it would be kind of cool, maybe, if there was a leaderboard thing, then we could go, I'm so awesome, my nexus score is higher than yours. But other than that, it's kind of silly. "Dalton bricked his phone - 0G"

Agreed. You get acheivements for...Having a life! Congratulations.
Haha, that was meant in a sarcastic and non demeaning manner.
But, he's got a point. It's simple, and it works. Granted, I only have
one friend that uses it, so no one will know if I get anything, but it's
still pretty good. But if you can come up with a list of decent ideas, then
maybe someone might make something. But, to me, sounds kind of foolish
I like it!
Like forsquare but for your geekiness!!

Just go on Feint

This just in, XDA brought down by wooters!

Anyone else seeing the increase in frequency of the over capacity message?
No, I'm not putting down wooters. I am a wooter. Just think it's funny.

Just wait until the other 6000 of us get ours. Mine's been vacationing in Irving, TX for 2 days now. I'm wondering if I can find a janitor or someone else there to charge it up for me while it sits.
Yeah, got the over capacity msg several times today. Then got the down for maintenence msg.
First Google and now this...and I won't even get my w00tab till sometime tomorrow
I just got mine, and it kind of looks like android 2.2 stock already..
its not so bad the way it came... its not so slow..
just got an OTA update alert for 1.1-3588
should I update or does it hamper my ability to hack the device ???
I currently have 1.1-3389
Nothing,

I flash vegan 5.11 about 30 seconds after I got mine lol

Everything I've read so far indicates that you should allow it to update first. You should do some more reading though just to be sure of what you're doing. I'm going to leave mine stock for a while until I'm comfortable with it.
LOL, we are the Woot Tab Clan!
Gettin' crazy up in this here e-crib! DoSing yer servers with our n00bitude!
In other news, does anyone know how to persistently keep the status bar and icons turned off system wide? I have it off in Launcher Pro, but other programs like the browsers don't respect it.
Woot, Woot!
This is a good thing. The G tablet went from a aftethought to maybe the most popular non ipad tablet in a matter of a week.
On a side note. my woot G tablet came with stock 2.2. Angry Birds and a few other apps . You could access the dashboard but it always started on stock 2.2 then I did the update and it went to the dashboard and angry birds ( and some of the other Apps ) was gone. Strange. Had to go to viewsonics website to put Angry Birds back on. ALmost like these were refurbs that were never updated. Mines working fine and I love it , just something I noticed.

I would recommend the 3588 OTA stock update first - it's a good solid baseline to have before modding.
I've seen the w00t servers brought down a number of times.

RE: over capacity
XDA recently migrated to new servers powerful enough to make Bill Gates drool. Unfortunately, with all the new power comes immense tweaking to the SQL databases, and until our server admin finds the sweet spot, these may happen on occasion.
Rest assured that every error generates a notification, and he acts as quick as possible.

It will be only for a short time, I think. Maybe a week or two, then everybody finished moding their tab and worked out all the kinks and then will hardly bother to come back.
Just my thoughts
Notice how the site's all snappy now?
It's because the Wooters are off trying to get a Bag of Crap (I've given up hope...)
Oh why hello gtabbers I got mine today! Well its for my wife for her beat but I carefully cracked it open I can't wait 20 days
Via TT
I think all the woot ones are older stock rather than being refurbs.
Woot is good about that sort of thing and will tell you up front if it is a refurbed device.

Please educate me!!! Who are wooters? Why have they brought xda-developers site to this unprecedented 'over-capacity?'
Definitely more laggy
The site's definitely more laggy over the last day or so....
To me, the sad part is that because ViewSonic has effectively taken a pass on gTab support, virtually the entire customer support load has landed on the XDA site and the generosity of its devs and user community.
If there were such a thing as corporate shame, ViewSonic should be feeling it.

My feedback about this phone

Hey guys, until yersterday i was a galaxy s owner, but i recived a desire s at the HTC conference at Milan (the presentation of HTC Sensation...i'm an italian blogger fo AndroidBlog.it).
I saw this phone also in Barcellona at MWC 2011, but i I was really surprised about it.
I found it very smooth, fast, responsive....something amazing...
with my SGS updated to 2.2.1 and with all the lagfixes activated in ext4 i can't reach a feeling of usability as on this phone!
really suprised!
It's a very good phone!
glad you think so
now i really want this phone
cant wait
Funny, my - admittedly brand new - SGS lagged less than the DS does. Also the DS has severe wifi issues, can't cope with MVNOs properly, is locked down like anything and forces a lot of crap (Locations, I'm looking at you!) down your throat. So, no, all's not right about the Desire S, and yes, it's still a nice phone.
I mean, I totally get that you're happy with your new (free) phone and kudos for disclosing how you got it, but still - couldn't you have at least tried to find something negative about it in the name of balance and/or journalistic integrity?
Sorry for the rant.

I'm not faulting you for raising your concerns with him, but come on, give him a break! He was merely writing to convey his appreciation of his new device, not publishing a review. There are plenty of in-depth reviews out there for that.

[Q] - Chandroid

Anyone having huge issues with this program, as soon as it pulls data it slows to a crawl and pops up with force close the moment it's caught up. This is the only program I have come across so far that runs like this. Anyone else having issues?
I just use the browser to lurk, no need to use chandroid which IMO does way worse than any full screen browser since you have a lot more real estate than a phone.
I like using it since I can't find anyway to download all the images from inside the posts, which chandroid will do for you. Unless you got a way to do it I don't know of?
Is this app dead? I cannot get it to work at all on any of my three Android devices.
It "loads" but nothing is displayed.

Yes it's dead, I believe they are still selling it but it's dead. They lost/let go the dev for it and I guess no one else there knows how to make it work. Which is a shame because it really was the best app for it.
You guys should try chant and YON.
YON has the save all images features but its been a lil bit since last update.

Antivirus/Malware & Traffic Monitoring

I am newly registered to the XDA but I have followed for some time now. I have rooted a LG Optimus M as well my AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket ( two separate devices...)
I recently switched to the :good::good::good::good:CM9 nightly builds:good::good::good:. Good so far in that realm minus a weird gallery issue.
My real question is what are people doing about antivirus/malware protection on a rooted phone? I have tried AVG and a couple of others, but the interface doesn't really show what it is doing. I also have a Macbook Pro and use Little Snitch for monitoring traffic going in and out. I can approve or deny traffic on a one time basis or forever. Is there also an app that would provide this type of functionality as traffic going out that I have not approved is generally my first clue that something might be going on.
This is my first post (N00bie) so I apologize if it is not formatted like some of you professional XDA members.
Thanks in advance.

I try not to install "****ty apps". I went on the play store and looked at the dr.web app the previous person suggested. I see a lot of negative feedback on that app... Works, doesn't work, won't uninstall, blah blah blah.... I think I will see what others post about this issue and make the best informed decision I possibly can...

some of those people are idiots on there haha but also they may have a phone thats incompatible with the app whereas the skyrocket is compatible.. Ive pretty much tried every anti virus and dr.web is hands down the best and has very little battery usage
EDIT: the people that have uninstall issues probably forgot that they gave the app device administrative access... which you have to turn off to uninstall

I agree, a lot of people are idiots on the play store. I am not saying it is a bad product, I am going to check out all responses to my posting and see what works best. I don't even mind paying for the app if it truly does what it says.
I was reading an article on my Flipbook (Google>>Don't get faked by Android antivirus apps<<) the other day that said a lot of the Android A/V apps miss a lot of malware. I know these apps can't catch every iteration but really??? 50%??? That is horrible...

This is the same report as the article I mentioned. Good, I am on the right track then...
I installed Dr.Web, but immediately presented with a purchase page. :crying:
I looked over the results of the test and settled on Lookout for now. It seems when I install any app, it will automatically scan that app for me... I like that approach. I may purchase it later... maybe...
I will let you know if I run into any problems with that one... I have to say if you don't have some sort of Antivirus, you may be asking for problems... Seems with rooting and modding that we are doing, you never REALLY know what someone has programmed into a mod or app. I still want something like Little Snitch that monitors all inbound/outbound traffic and lets me decide whether to allow/deny connections....
Would be a nice feature in my mind...

As long as you're not side loading apps and pay attention to the permissions that's all good.
You also have to not use open networks where they can poison and intercept your info. I stay off those and don't side load.

LBE privacy guard.
I've used it for a long while now. Clean, simple, and only presents me with a super user style allow/deny for permission requests. It let's you enable or disable internet connectivity for an app, but not specific requests to specific hosts like little snitch. Its great for other permissions too, locations, contact lists, etc.
