In the Goolge I/O 2014, they showed some android apps running on their chrombooks. Basically, they are a variant of linux distribution.
Will it be technically possible to have that stuff work in a modern linux distribution ? Has anyone found anything related to that lately? It would be handy if I have those commonly used android apps in my laptop!
Is this question in any way related to Xperia L?

Hello,
First off, apologies if I have posted this in the incorrect forum.
The company I work for is looking to update one of it's product lines and has been toying with the idea of using Android as a development platform. Up until now the philosophy has always been to develop simple, bespoke embedded software that provides only the functionality that is needed at the time. The device itself will be a medical device, and as such will have no telephony requirements (and associated things like contacts, calander and the large majority of the pre-installed Android apps).
I have read, and understand it is possible to re-compile Android from source and remove all of these non-required functionality. My question is really if that is worth doing? i.e. stripping out all un-needed applications that get build into a stock ROM. Or would it be a more efficient to use some form of OTS embedded Linux platform?
Something in Android 4.0 that does seem to be useful is the support for Bluetooth HDP.
Kind Regards,
Simon
Well there are other devices that aren't phones that use Android. Take the motoactv for example. It's a fitness watch that runs a stripped version of Android, but it's still Android and applications can still be programmed and installed to it.
I have searched lots on the subject of getting a full linux distro running on an android device most of which were really not really what I am looking for, almost everything I find on the subject seems to be some kind of hybrid solution where running linux side by side or on top of android but imo that just seems messy and may as well just be using andorid with it's apps than do that.
I ran into interesting information about modding chromebooks some of when were the similar side-by-side solution but others actually more what I was looking for, they enable legacy seabios while not enough to get windows installed seems to work fine to boot into linux and another guy had baked his own custom seabios replacing the chrome bios entirely.
my question, the atom tablets Im seeing pop up a few places are standard x86 right ? is it possible to either
1/run a modded sea bios similar to chromebook mods? then boot a stock ubuntu distro installation maybe from external storage?
2/or somehow have the existing/modded bootloader boot linux kernel/ubuntu install ?
can't help think if it were that simple maybe someone would have done it already but also thinking the hardware (drivers) are supported by android so they should be supported by linux right ? and if it is standard x86 can't be too much a stretch right ?
I don't own an atom tablet but was thinking it may be desirable (and add more use) if I could get a full linux distro installed and be a lot more affordable than full fledged windows based tablet.
anyway thanks
ps:that captcha is harcore
They are kinda standard. But they are not following PC architecture. They are so called Intel MID (Mobile Internet Device). On such devices you may find neither EFI nor ACPI. They have so called SFI which is a complete disaster. But Intel Merrifield is more or less supported by upstream kernel and Yocto (thanks to Intel Edison platform). You may try to gather information about those devices (official name of SoC is Intel Atom Z34xx).
I know that there are lots of threads asking if there is any way to install W8 on an Android device but i'd like to know if there is any way to install only the interface of W8 on an Android device ( in my case, tablet ). And no, i'm not looking for Launcher apps to modify my interface. I know that android devices uses ( most of them ) ARM CPUs and Windows 8/RT runs only on 32-bit/64-bit CPUs but there must be a way to install only the user interface of W8 and not doing anything else to the kernel etc.
If you know any software or any way to change my interface with the one's of W8 without installing a Launcher App. i'd be pleased to post it here
Hi everybody,
I've decided to upgrade my TF101 to KatKiss 4.4 mainly due to the fact that I intend to use Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word which are available for install from Google Play Store. Important thing is that they require Android in KitKat version (4.4) at least. My current installation seems to fulfill this requirement, however, in Google Play when I try to download & install these apps I obtain the message that my device is not compatible with this version.
Did anyone has similar problem?
Well, no one answered. Maybe I'll ask another way - did anyone succeeded in installing Microsoft Power Point from Google Play on TF101 with KatKiss 4.4?
Perhaps only I have such problem?

The MS-office apps require NEON compatible devices. They won't work with our Tegra2.

On Microsoft website I've found the following information regarding hardware requirements:
Office for Androidâ„¢ tablet can be installed on tablets running Android KitKat 4.4 with a minimum screen size of 7 inches and an ARM-based processor. Office Mobile for Android phones can be installed on phones running OS 4.0 or higher.
NEON extension is not mentioned. Tegra2 is an ARM based processor, isn't it sufficient for these apps?

Thats because non-neon devices are practically non-existent. Only a very very small amount of devices are out there that requires apps to be compiled explicitly with non-neon flags. That the tegra2 has no neon support is one of its major drawbacks.

So no hope that these apps will work on TF101?
Hi all! We have started back on our project, UserLAnd (userland.tech), which is an easy way for people to have Linux distros or Linux apps on your Android device. One of the things we are trying to work on is developing access to apps that currently aren't available on Android through our platform. For example, we have just launched a GIMP app (which is the actual GIMP!) and also desktop Firefox (here is a link to all of our apps in the play store - https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=8617260147938950881)
Anyway, I wanted to get some ideas from the community on what apps we should consider pursuing! Let me know and thanks in advance!
