App I can use to automatically turn on/off stuff? - General Questions and Answers

Like let's say I connect to my home WiFi, I want to automatically sync on and lower the brightness to 1/4 of the way (just an example lol). Is there any app out there BESIDES TASKER that can do stuff like that? Tasker is really complicated IMO and I don't know how to use it. I'd prefer a much simpler app that I can use to do stuff like in the first sentence. Thanks to any suggestions!
PS- Just got a $25 Play Gift card, so it can be a paid app

Try an app called "Trigger".
Works for me

Said it before and I'll say it again.
You can use Llama for this.

I did and thought it was really complicated :/
Maybe I'll give it another shot. But always open to other suggestions. Just got a $25 Google Play gift card to, so rally open to anything.

Once you get to use it, it's pretty straight forward.
Tell me what you want to do, I'll guide you.

I want to create simple stuff such as.... Connect to my home Wifi shuts off mobile data and turns off my pattern unlock security. Connected to work Wifi puts my phone on mute and turns off pattern unlock security. Battery drops below 20% and power saving mode gets enabled automatically (Galaxy S5)... Etc. Just stuff like that.
Also on a side note... How is tasker on the RAM, resources and battery? Just curious.

You can use NFC Tools and NFC Tasks

Tasker is pretty light on battery and resources.
I'll create the steps for the tasks you've mentioned and post them here tomorrow.

actual battery management app that works

SuperPower (I got it on AppBrain) is an advanced power management app. It does cool stuff like allow you to schedule your phone to shut off data when the screen is off WHILE scheduling the data to come on for a couple minutes every hour to sync your email AND leave data on if your screen is off but you're downloading something. It didn't seem to play too nice with setcpu but has literally doubled my battery life without a noticeable change in performance. There's a thread on xda about it somewhere, but this is currently an unsupported beta so use at your own risk.

sounds like.
Ya, it's a similar concept to JuiceDefender. Less about task management and power profiles, though - isntead of setting up profiles you basically just enable levels of control over your phone for the app. And yes, 94tbird, I am aware that "of course it did it shut data off. any app that does that will extend batt life " but the impressive thing is that it didn't just turn data off, but it managed it so that I didn't notice it was off. If I wanted a phone with no data connection and great battery life, I'm sure I have an old nokia around here somewhere. The point was that it is a smart enough app to turn data off when I don't need it and on when I do, while still keeping my email box synced and all without me noticing a difference (besides the battery life). You could accomplish the same thing with the stock widget to turn your data connection on and off, but you would actually have to turn it on and off. This app does it for you, and seamlessly enough that you don't notice it working. But hey - do as you like. I don't have any connection to the developer(s) of this app, I just dl'd it and it worked really well, thought I would share.

[Q] Tasker or Juice Defender?

Does anyone have both of these and so able to comment on whether Juice Defender is necessary if Tasker is installed? IE Can Tasker do all that Juice Defender ultimate can? (Such as turn off wifi when the screen is off *IF* there is no traffic/downloading occurring?
Thanks.

If you're good enough about setting up your rules, there's very little that you can't setup Tasker to do. I'd have to check, but I'd imagine you can have it do something like that or close to it. If I have time later, I'll see if I can reproduce that functionality in my copy of Tasker
Thanks. I know that Tasker can put the device into flight mode when, say, the screen is off, but what I'm interested in is whether it can be made smart enough to only do so when no data is being downloaded.
cheers!
I have both and decided to use Juice Defender because I wasn't sure how to set that up within tasker. I bet it's possible though.
Yeah, that is why I'm asking. There are a few profiles on Task Wiki, but they all seem to involve 3g cell towers too, I'm after a wifi only one (perhaps they will work, I don't know).
It is quite easy just to turn on airplane when the screen is off, but we really need one that knows when data is being downloaded so only switches airplane on when nothing is happening - plus It'd be nice to be able to set it to enable wifi etc for a short period of time every so often to keep things updated.
I'm fairly sure all of this is possible (maybe not checking if anything is being downloaded?). Anyone who is a Tasker regular able to provide one that does this?
Incidentally, Ad1980 - Are you using JuiceDefender free, or one of the paid ones? If paid, do you find it makes a difference?
you really use such programs on a tablet? mine sits all night and only drops a couple (1-3%) overnight. Wifi and data flowing that whole time

Mine drops about that much too, but I guess it all depends on how much data is being downloaded. Still, those 1-3% percent could be saved, and could add as much as 30% to the battery if, say, the tablet wasn't touched for 3 or so days.
It isn't all about battery saving though - Some people don't want/require mail to arrive at night, for example, so Tasker can be setup to automatically stop wifi during certain hours when the screen is off.
good point about the email and such. i use mine 3-4 hours a day probably so its gets charged every other day i would guess no matter what
I'm using Ultimate, though I've been using it for so long that I couldn't tell you the difference between it and the free version. The market description isn't all that helpful either. I'd go with the free version and if there are capabilities that are greyed out that you want to use then go ahead and upgrade.
I'm pretty sure that an appropriate Tasker profile would have to make use of Variables. Talks a little about it here.
http://tasker.dinglisch.net/userguide/en/variables.html
I'm going to assume you're looking into streaming music while the screen is off. Maybe create a task to start Pandora. Then you might be able to use the "Tasks Running" variable. So the wifi goes off when the screen is off unless unless %Pandora variable is on.
After using Juice Defender for a couple of weeks now on my HTC one X I have to I haven't really notice a whole of difference. What I have noticed that it cuts off wifi and mobile data when i am not using it but when i want to use it, it takes a while for it to reopen and connect and some times it doesnt even open so i have to manualy open wifi or mobile data connection. But i guess it better than having an constantly on connection which can eat your battery life is 1-2 hours.
It is not possible with tasker

Me too looking for the answer for this question.... so for no quite good answers.... Somebody have to develop a plugin for tasker to find out the data/wife downloading speed.. if it can be found, then we can definitely replace JD with tasker...
There is no plugin in the Play Store regarding this..
if any one find anything like this please share with this post..
Yes, JD is must have app, Tasker can't replace it until the availability of above said plug-in. JD makes it possible, switching off mobile data once the download is finished or a threshold is met...
Try Deep Sleep Battery Saver and LeanData.

Tried JD and others on my phone and tablet. I found that Deep Sleep Battery Saver and LeanData work the best for me.
Deep Sleep Battery Saver:

LeanData

Just check if its going correctly under deep sleep. Try cpu spy on play store. If not going on deep sleep, look inside battery stats which app is stealing juice (may be some apps are synchronizing too much and waking up cpu/wifi).
Juice defender dose not reconnect my data connection when screen unlock.

You and I both know there ia an app for that...

I just don't know what it is called...
I am looking for an app to turn data on/off at specified times. Something that allows for 3g/4g programing would be great, but anything is better than nothing. Thanks, hive mind!!
I think Tasker does what you want...it'll do pretty much anything! It's a paid app, but well worth it. You can have the phone modify settings, turn on/off settings, or launch apps based on triggers (time, location, etc.). It's a bit difficult to program at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze. I have it set to turn on wifi when I get close to my house (using aGPS only, to save battery life), and to turn the ringer on when charging (and back to vibrate when not). It's awesome.
Juice defender pro it has a option called night mode but you can set it when ever or just do what I do add a HTC widget to your home page from settings called mobile network and just open it when you want to use it. That saves even more power.

Thanks, MadMan. Exactly what I was looking for! I don't want to press buttons. I want to set it and forget it!
Does Tasker allow data on/off on Gingerbread?
Llama also works great for Froyo, but no more data on/off on Gingerbread.

powersaving app idea

I know there are already a lot of power saving apps out there, but i was looking for one that would do the following:
turn data and wifi off and only turn one of them (user selectable or depending on connection availability) every N minutes (lets say 15), leave it turn on for 2 minutes just enough to sync and receive messages, then tur it off again, and a way to disable (toggle) this functionality in a widget or toggle button, or if this functionality could be called by LLAMA, it would be great.
i think this would greatly save battery specially when you are at work and dont need the wifi turned on everytie, just enough time for short periods to sync data and get messages.
any ideas if theres an app like this?
well...

Extreme power saving mode

Hey, I was curious if anyone knew a way to make it so that extreme power saving mode would automatically kick in when I turned my screen off. Now I know this may not be helpful for some people but as this is my personal phone I really don't need emails to be pushed to me right away and what not.
I've searched throughout tasker to find a way to do this but I cannot find a way for the life of me.
Any ideas or suggesting a would be appreciated and helpful. Thanks!

You could just use Greenify and hibernate the GMail app.

Well it's not just the email app. I was just using that as an example. It's just when it's on extreme power saving mode my phone can last for days. And I often forget to turn it on when I'm done with my phone. I wish it was possible to use it with tasker. It be so easy just to turn screen off and it automatically kick in

There has got to be a way... I'll play with it and let u know
Edit
so i got it to work pretty simple too. and of course you can add any additional variables. such as only do during certain hours and so forth, or if you seriously want it in extreme power saving mode all the time that the screen is off, then its rather simple.
open tasker,
add profile for event, click display, and display off
click new task for this case name it EPSM or what every you'd like
click the + and select action category script, then Run Shell
under command enter this
Code:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.htc.htcpowermanager/com.htc.htcpowermanager.extremepowersaver.ExtremePowerSaverConfirmActivity
and check the box for "use Root"
back out ensure you now see a profile for Display Off and its on and the task is set to EPSM and we are all good.
now when every you screen is off the phone will enter extreme power saving mode.
turn screen back on and you will be in EPSM, and just click exit to get out,
**
a few notee / things to point out, is that you could also add a timer, so that if the display is off, for X amount of time then it triggers the script, or only run between the times of 11 pm - 8 am... the possibilties are endless.
Have fun with this.
