[Resolved] [Q] Android internal storage size - General Questions and Answers

I have a Sony Xperia Z Ultra device and officially it has 16GB of internal storage. But when I go to Settings-> Storage I see that total space is only 11.79 GB. Obviously the rest is reserved for the system.
So the question is: does the system really need so much? I'm using a very compact SlimKat ROM, so I doubt it does
Is there any way to repartition device somehow and make more storage available to the user and less for the system? Or there are reasons why it's impossible even when using custom ROM?
I know there are some tricks to make the device treat the external SD card as internal memory but that's not what I'm looking for now
P. S. I tried to google, but I couldn't find any relevant info

Thanks, but I think this question is not Sony-specific I mean that on every Android device some part of the storage is reserved for system use

Repartitioning a Sony device sounds like a question that should be asked in your device and ROM specific forum threads. I would need to use a tool made by Samsung to do that on my Samsung phone. You may need some Sony or development tool. Search on xda.

Yeah, I will ask in the Sony forums about the tool. I was just curious if it is theoretically possible, or may be there are some important reasons for not doing that )

I know it's possible on my Samsung Galaxy S4; however, I haven't done it because it comes with risk of hard-bricking the device if you don't do it correctly. I figure I won't cross that bridge unless it's ever truly necessary.
Good luck!

Lack of onboard development tools for Xperia L

Well guys as we all know nowadays there are several apps that can perform the basic tasks required for Android Development without breaking a sweat. But as you all may know ROM managers refuse to work as Sony Xperia L is not officially supported by Clockworkmod recovery(Actually TWRP also). Although it works through flashing a kernel with CWM or TWRP integrated solves the problem. But this type of recoveries have a major drawback it is that every time (if) a higher or newer version of Android is installed like new AOSP ROM there is incompatibility of the kernel with new Android Version or basically the Firmware.(obviously)
Ok so here's it I request Sony Xperia L developers to please try to make a independent recovery , which does not require any kernel flashing before.
And its my humble request ( fully understanding developer's hardwork ) but this needs too be done. Because for now we aren't getting official versions of them by any means.
I request every Sony Xperia L developer to do this for their own and new developer's convenience.
There's no pressure though , do this by own free will.
Anybody Ready??? please leave your thoughts on it down here

Well, you should read before post. They have tried already making CWM for locked bootloader and it wasn't working.
There was glitches. Don't get what is your problem. We have does things for XL, it doesn't mean we don't have them because you have to flash kernel in order to make them work.
I fully understand .... but

But then sometimes if kernel has to be loaded standalone, then a recovery is better option, I know it's secondary thing but you this contribution will make future development a bit user friendly for Xperia devices as we are fully dependent on Flashtool, and having a emergency secondary way is really useful sometimes.
And yup I just put on my idea if u agree. Please contribute.
Thank You .
This is impossible for any new Xperia device because they don't have recovery partition. You should research before posting anything. Reporting now.

Look at the list, no single Sony device is officially supported. This has nothing to do with the Xperia L.

Now I know that Sony Xperia Devices don't have recovery partition. So that's why no support from ROM Manager.
By the way I was being specific about Xperia L only because I wanted it for our Xperia L only . As it is in Sony Xperia L section.
anyways thanks for info.

(Help needed) A few questions before buy it...

Hello XDA
I'm going to buy a Xperia C Dual, but, here is a few questions...
1. Did Sony release the open source for Xperia C?
2. Is the CPU and GPU open source / Drivers released?
3. Can we have a stable CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android... ? (Read question 2)
4. If the answer for questions 1, 2 and 3 is yes, why this device still doesn't have any custom ROM?
5. Will the device receive any Android upgrade?
6. Does the screen resolution (540x960) support the Themer app (by MyColorScreen)?
Reply me please

[FAQ][HELP THREAD][GUIDES LIST] Ask Any Question for Xperia L

Hello Everyone.
Good News for everyone. I have decided to maintain a help thread at Xperia L community in order to keep the threads for development/general section more clean and better organised. I have been noticing for a long time that whenever new users join, they still are not sure about the rules and thus mistakenly post in the wrong sections too often. If any senior member points it out to them, mostly it is either ignored or taken personally. Thus I have decided a combined help section would be very helpful to the community and the questions which are sometimes left unanswered and lost in question answer forums, that would not happen again for all of you.
I would be personally answering all your questions and shall refer you to someone in case I feel someone else would be able to answer the same question in a more detailed way. Other users can feel free to answer as well if you think you can tackle the situation well and make sure while answering any question, you provide enough information to the users as well. You can easily link the users to posts if you think a question has been already answered.
REASONS I AM MAKING THIS
Lots of repetitive questions.
Same things told again and again
Threads remain clean
A simple reference to every important thread that you should visit in case you have a problem
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO
Read the rules here XDA RULES BEFORE YOU POST
Idea of this thread is to help and to be helped. So ask any question you have in mind related to Xperia L, Android, or anything at all as long as it is related to Xperia L directly or indirectly.
Make sure you are precise with your information
Be Detailed
Do not repeat the same thing again and again
Use search button to find if your question has been asked before. Do not repeat your question if it is answered before.
WHAT INFORMATION YOU MUST PROVIDE
1.Your bootloader status
2. Rom name with complete baseband/date/version
3. Kernel name
4. Any Mods you are using
5.If you are using Custom Rom, your flashing style i.e dirty/clean or you wiped anything else in specific
6. If you used any guide, link to the guide
7. Root status
8. Your exact problem
9. Any method you tried that failed
10.Any other detail you think would be necessary
Make sure you provide as much details as possible. Things like my phone won't turn on please help would not be of any help to you or to the person answering. So please make sure you provide as much detail so we know exactly what is your problem and thus guide you in the right direction.
A sample would be something like this
Device: c2105
ROM name: CM 12 dated 10th May
ROM version and base: 3.99-RC2
Build number: CM_taoshan-userdebug 4.3 JLS36G
kernel version and its settings: 3.4.0-thunderzap.kernel.plus [email protected] #193
Rooted
Sabertooth Mod
I can not use my WIFI. Although i tried flashing Wifi modules but it does not work.
I flashed CM over 1.5.2A.0.17 Stock

Another important thing is MAKE SURE YOU THANK THE PERSON who helps you. This is to show your appreciation to someone who personally took his time to answer your question. He had been nice enough to do it for FREE and nothing else. A simple thank you to his post will go a long way. The questions would be answered more and the one who is answering would be happy to answer more questions. So it is a gain gain situation for all of you. Although everyone likes to have their own customisation in a ROM and what features they are looking for, it is very hard to pin point which would suit you best. For now , the best thing you can do is test few roms like Resurrection Remix, PACMAN etc and see what suits you best.
As far as your stablility issues are concern, the BSOD is major problem in 12.1. I suggest you go back to CM12 nightlies from official website.

[Completed] [HELP] How to Root ALCATEL FLASH 2

Hi,
First i would like to give thanks to all the information on this site, so i decided to create an account here to try and share too.
It just happened that I've bought a cool smartphone and tried to Root it, Luckily it went not successful haha my bad.
I've tried using almost all the One Click Rooting Apps (apk) available on here. So I Guess after what I've done with my powers I should ask for a SOS.
infos:
Released on September 2015
Android OS, v5.1, 16GB storage,
5.0", 720x1280 pixels
13MP, 1080p
2GB RAM ; MT6753
3000mAh Battery.
Is it because of the Lollipop v5.1 why I can't root it?? and if i use a computer base rooting will i hurt my Phone?
Thanks for those who will help.

I've used Kingroots latest Version so far, Until Kingroot updates its database I guess we have to wait.
Anyway I will keep on trying to gain something too and to Help Others that meets same problem as mine.

Want a LBL Lollipop root method for the Xperia C3? Keep reading.

Hi all!
I'm happy to say that, thanks to iovyroot, and with a lot of help from zxz0O0, we managed to create a new root tool for the Xperia M2, EagleRootTool, meaning we don't actually need to use Kingroot anymore to root LBL devices under latest Lollipop firmware :victory:
However, since this root binary is compatible with (probably) any kernel built before December 2015, I thought of making the tool compatible with some other devices, like your C3, since it's actually very similar to my device.
Unfortunately, since it requires some kernel-specific addresses, to make it compatible with other devices like the C3, I need them from every single variant.
I'm going to take for reference all models and firmware build numbers from XperiFirm.
WHAT YOU NEED:
- An already rooted device in 19.4.A.0.182 (it doesn't matter if it was rooted by Kingroot, or via UBL methods).
- A little of Android general knowledge: Usage of ADB (mainly).
- Patience.
DEVICES:
- D2533 ✓
- D2502
HOW TO DO IT?:
Just open an ADB prompt and run a shell in it. Then, run the following commands, replacing the *location with storage/sdcard1 if you want to use your SD Card, or with data/media/0 if you want to use the internal memory.
Code:
su
cat /proc/version > /[COLOR="Purple"]*[/COLOR][COLOR="red"]location[/COLOR]/version.txt
echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/kptr_restrict
cat /proc/kallsyms > /[COLOR="Purple"]*[/COLOR][COLOR="red"]location[/COLOR]/kallsyms.txt
(remember to hit enter after each line of the above :silly
Now upload those two files (version.txt & kallsyms.txt) wherever you want, or attach them in your comment, saying which model they're from, and I'll add the required offsets to support your device manually!

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a placeholder NOR Spam thread. I just want to help this device users to get them supported in a common Lollipop Xperia rooting toolkit, since this device won't get Marshmallow, and has a compatible kernel.
