I've been running CM9 for a few weeks now, but have decided that I want to get S-Off and open the phone's capability up some more... Anyway, I'm on a MT4GS:
HBOOT 1.45.0013
Nov 21 2011 build
Tried flashing this https://www.cx.com/mycx/share/O2W61....00_11.16.3504.20_2_release_245247_signed.zip
from weekendsr2short's mirror page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878329) of Blue6ix's stuff...(i tried autoflashing from the bootload/fastboot screen)
anyway, it loads up like it is going to actaully flash, but nothing changes on the Bootloader screen. The phone is unlocked via HTC's tool and is rooted. Any help is greatly appreciated! Please lemme know if any more info is needed.

OK, that's what I was hoping to do. I noticed in the JB instructions that it said I must be a stock RUU not a custom ROM or something to that effect. I am on CWM 5.Something so a rom flash is NP. Any recommended ROMs? I.e One that worked for you? I tried the wire trick about 100 times over the course of an hour or so(on cm9.1), but then reread the bit shout the rom again.
Thanks for all the responses so far!
Any stock based ROM will do. I went with MikTouch myself and it worked like a charm! (on the 4th try so be patient....)

well, one down, one to go. I have my phone all dialed in...now its time to fix my wife's... Thanks again Gents! (& Ladies, as applicable!)
edit: well, hers is done now... I ended up using another SD card, the original one I tried was kinda old, but the newer one I normally use worked on the 2nd try... didnt lose any data either... her sd card on the other hand was toasted and needed to be reformated... anyway, both phones are now S-Off!!

yeah, Ive been running root since my MT3G way back when...couldnt stand how laggy that thing was with all the bloat... wasnt even that great with CM6 but still night and day better than stock (=hooked on rooting). then upgraded to the MT4g and now this thing... was fairly concerned about all the extra hoops but wouldve just chosen another platform had I borked it...glad I didnt, saved me some funds!
On a related note, what radios are you guys running? Are there any issues between the GB radios and ICS ones? Im assuming so, but with the custom ROMs/kernels anything should be able to be overcome I'm hoping... I know I def. had issues on CM7 -> CM9 on the reg. 4G when swapping radios...
I don't generally swap my radios around since there are only two that I'm aware of. But I DID find that the new one (when I replaced my phone) seemed to lock a signal a bit quicker but for me the original radio gets MUCH better phone reception. Depends on your phone I suppose.
(you'll be glad you went with this phone though. basically a Sensation with a keyboard)

cool, I just flashed the older one today... been having really crappy recption on campus lately (esp. since switching from the MT4G) better reception is what I'd rather have... ill give this one a week or so and see if I think its any better... I like the phone a lot already... i still use the soft keyboard from time to time as I forget the other one is there, but it comes in really handy on certain sites...
Hello guys, I've been lurking the forums for hours trying to find a thread with an issue close to mine, and this is the closest I got. I followed all the necessary steps on the first page, but the problem I'm having is when I try to flash the PG59IMG.zip file, it says "Loading... PG59IMG.zip", but then it says "Checking....PG59IMG.zip" and afterwards it says "Wrong zipped image!" Any ideas what it could mean? I just want to get it back to stock. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link. It said I need to relock the phone in order to flash the image, but when i type "fastboot oem lock" into command prompt, I get a message saying 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command, inoperable program or batch file." I'm guessing this means my fastboot wasn't set up correctly, but I don't know where to go from here. As always, thanks again for any help or advice.

Hey guys, I am at the end of my rope here, so maybe you can help me out.
I have been dealing with the Media service bug that drains battery super fast for the last few days on my wifes rooted SGS3, and I have been jumping between roms, deleting SD files, searching for corrupt apps/media all to no avail. Tonight, in an effort to fix this issue, I flashed the most recent CM10 nightly as I heard it had a fix for this issue. I have no idea if that is true, because when I got to the setup screen after flashing, I kept getting an error that said that setup crashed and could not run. I had to boot back in to recovery, flash again, only to find the same error.
I then attempted to flash clean rom, except now I see that her phone is always roaming where my Note2 right next to it is on 4G. I flashed an older CM10 nightly for her, and the same issue popped up where it is only roaming.
Did the failed CM10 flash screw something up? How can I get her off roaming and back on 3/4G? Thanks!
You most likely lost you imei/min or something, you can check in settings>about phone>status. Easy way to correct it is to flash a older stock ICS image and use the reprovision code. Flash this in odin then type this in the dialer *2767*3855# and that should fix ya back up. Flashing anything carries a risk of dropping your imei but it happens much more on AOSP roms.

OK, so I was able to get signal back (shows 4/3G), however she is unable to actually text or call from her number. She can use google voice though, so I am guessing it is something specifically with her number. Maybe the IMEI thing you mentioned. Assuming she has her signal back, would dialing that set of numbers reactivate her, or would I still have to do the ODIN steps?
It there is data then that dialer code should fix the calling, but you need to be in ics to do it

Yeah, I am pretty sure she has data. She is not at home, and when she left a bit ago we thought all was well (since she had the 4G indicator whereas before it said roaming) but she just used GVoice to text me to say that she cannot call or text using her VZW credentials. When you say that she needs to be in ICS, would any ICS rom do? She is in the newest version of Cleanrom right now, so I will have to flash something else I think. As for using ODIN, that is kinda out of the question because we are on vacation and the internet here sucks. It would take 2 weeks to download the stock VZW image, but if that is the only option then I guess that is how i goes. Thank you in advance for all your help!

Im actually downloading a torrent of the stock image for regular desktop ODIN and it is moving fairly quickly. That being said, using a custom rom would be easier (wouldnt I not have to use ODIN at all, just flash it like a normal rom?). If that is the case, can I download your route 66 rom, boot into recovery, wipe, flash then use the dialer code?
EDIT: Whoops, I misunderstood your previous post. I think we are talking about the same thing. I am torrenting the route 66.tar file right now. You are suggesting that I use VZW 4G on her phone to dl the tar file then flash with mobile ODIN? I have never used mobile ODIN to my knowledge so I am not sure how to go about that.
EDIT 2: I just checked out mobile ODIN on the market, and that seems easy enough. So I just finish this .tar dl, put it on her SD, load the app and follow its directions to flash it. Once that is flashed, reboot and dial that code. Then Flash whatever rom I want (say, back to cleanrom). Is that about right?

That's pretty much it, with mobile Odin you'll just click open file. It will put the different parts (kernel, recovery, etc) in the correct section. Then you click flash, support easy and faster then normal Odin. Also if you make a backup before doing this you can just restore your backup after fixing the network problem.

You are awesome! I am sure you factored this in to your suggestion, but if I backup her current rom, then ODIN, then restore, it will not undo what I did with ODIN, correct? Again, I am pretty sure it wont, but I was also pretty sure I knew what I was doing when I flashed CM last night and look how that turned out. Thanks again!

Haha, this is why CM warns us not to flash the nightlies unless we know what we are doing, which you and I did not I guess.
Basically, to get your cell signal back you need to flash back to a different firmware version. You do this through a program called ODIN which is a desktop program for Windows or a paid app in Android. I am going the paid app route mostly because it is a bit easier, but the desktop version is free.
I have not tested the solution yet, but I have read on other posts that it works. If you do the app route, you select the firmware file with the app, run the process (it should be self-explanatory in the app), then once the new firmware is on, you dial a special verizon code to get your signal stuff fixed. Below are the files you need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762204 (this is the firmware file that you will flash using ODIN)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.mobileodin.pro&hl=en (this is the mobile ODIN app)
Dial *2767*3855# once you have the firmware on to in theory fix the signal issue
After that, you can reflash your rom, but do not flash the CM nightly again!

OK, so a bit of a hiccup. I ran ODIN with the .tar file you suggested, and after going through the expected flashing and what not, the screen went black with my LED notification light blinking blue. I pulled the battery after about 10 minutes of this, booted into recovery then rebooted and it did the same thing. Ideas?

Any idea what I should be doing or what I did wrong?

I did not reboot after the driver install, so I will do that. As for the MD5, what is that and how do I verify? You are talking about the firmware download, right?
This is my first post ever here so I'm sorry if I'm breaking some rule (read the forum rules so I don't think I am) or if it's in the wrong subforum (although this does seem like a help & troubleshooting topic to me).
A little backstory is probably necessary.
I rooted my s3 (latest OTA update) via CASUAL (thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825) and it seemed like it worked for the most part, although it didn't boot into twrp like it should have and instead booted into normal recovery. I just assumed that it was because something went wrong with the recovery installation so I just thought "ok whatever."
Root access was there, and I assumed the bootloader was unlocked since I read several places that when it's unlocked, the initial samsung boot logo appears for about a second as opposed to several seconds when it's locked. So I just assumed all i needed was to reinstall a custom recovery and I was golden.
Installed ROM Manager, flashed CWM through the app, and rebooted the phone, and as it was booting into recovery I was greeted with the infamous "NO CUSTOM SOFTWARE ALLOWED PLEASE ALERT PAPA VERIZON IMMEDIATELY" warning.
I was about to flash back to stock through odin (which i regretted since I've had bad experiences in the past using it) when I figured out I could get the device to boot normally by clicking cancel in the download mode confirmation window. I guess it kept trying to reboot to recovery after every unsuccessful boot, which made it seem like it was softbricked to me.
Phone is operating normally now, and it should after another reboot as long as it doesn't try to go into recovery again (though I'm kind of afraid to even do that).
Is there any way without Odin I can fix my recovery and/or bootloader? I'm not sure what the problem is here and I don't think this sort of thing is a common searchable issue. Google/XDA search didn't bring up anything that sounded like someone had 100% the same problem I do.
Also on a semi-related note, does EZ-Unlock still work with this latest OTA? And if my bootloader is potentially unlocked already, would unlocking it again through EZ-Unlock break something?

That is really weird...
I was reading it and was going to suggest easy unlock v1.2,you will not break anything using that app.
If that still doesn't work, try to flash TWRP through goo manager and see if it somehow fixes your recovery issue.
It sounds to me that your Bootloader is unlocked though... But give it a shot.

It's just strange that you only get that message with recovery mode, it normally will not do that.
At the very worst, an odin back to stock is pretty easy. Just follow the same process, but use ez recovery instead of rom manager. It was made specifically for our phone, and never gives me any issues when installing recoveries.
I still think if you use ez unlock it'll probably fix the issue completely. Let me know if you figure it out. Good luck.

No, but it wouldn't hurt.
Use 1.2 of ez unlock, versions 1.3 and 1.4 will give an unknown message. There have also been lots of reports saying that version 1.4 did not unlock their bootloader.
These are the most recent recoveries, download and flash in the ez recovery app if you need to.

Reflashed CMW (I used the version provided by ez recovery, please let me know if that's a problem) just in case and it worked like a charm. Thanks!
Also I did use version 1.2. I actually had it sitting on my phone's home screen before I made this thread.
It still showed up as "Unknown". Maybe that indicated the problem?
Regardless, this problem seems to have been fixed. Now it's time to do some research on verizon s3 roms.
Also another semi-unrelated note, it seems I tripped a flash counter somewhere along the line.
Is Triangle Away one of those apps that is just "open and press a button"? I've been kind of wary of using it since it has that huge warning in app's description.

Glad to hear it's working! Strange issue but looks like you ironed it out.
Triangle away is the app you would use. You tripped it using the rooting method injecting your recovery through odin, it's a big warning because it messes with your boot partition. If it fails and borks your boot partition, then you'd have to jtag your phone to fix it.
I personally wouldn't use it unless I was turning in my phone for service or replacement. But the app has great reviews and not many reports of bricks.
Before flashing anything, use a newer recovery image. The one provided by ez recovery is from last year, the newer versions are better written to prevent possible errors that come up with jellybean.

Read through the op's and decide based on what you're looking for.
Mostly stock, very stable:
Clean rom, bonestock, darthstalker x1.
More modified stocks, more buggy but can run very well:
Hyperdrive, axis, goodness, moar
AOSP isn't my cup of tea, but they are fast and lag free.
Make sure you update your recovery image first, I edited my last post but think you missed it.

Use Kies to recover it... it works
Viper
help, please!!!!
I'm not really a newbie, but haven't really had an android in my hands for a while and EVERYTHING IS SO DIFFERENT!!!! I have a gs3 (sch-s968c) which is the galaxy s3 available from straight talk. I wanted to reserve power and take out all the bloatware, so I attempted to root it, using Odin. I tried it 7 times so far and it has not been successful. Now when I enter recovery mode I keep getting a screen that says:
odin mode
product name:sch-s968c
custom Binary download: yes (7 counts)
current binary: Custom
system status: official
qualcomm secureboot: enable
followed by: "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies & try again"
Here's the issues: I did not ensure that I had the correct drivers and didn't have kies set up (new to kies). I can not find drivers for this exact model, and the computer is not recognizing my phone when it's plugged in (no opportunity to explore phone files)
Right now I have the sd card out (it came from a sorry explanation for a droid from straight talk (lg optimus, I think). I CAN STILL, HOWEVER, GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
Quick Question
Where are you finding these firmwares? i flashed the wrong rom on it and i lost service...

I've lost service as well. I rooted using the Impactor method. Root was successful, I downloaded and successfully flashed the latest version of CWM Touch Recovery, then I flashed the newest version of BeanStalk ROM. The phone wouldn't get passed the "Select Language" section without bootlooping. So I pulled the battery, booted back into Recovery, wiped and re-installed my Nandroid backup. After I restored, my phone wouldn't receive service or data. Also, under About Device/Status, the network now says Unknown, Mobile network type says Unknown, Service state says Out of service, and my Phone number also says Unknown. How do I re-register my device back onto the Straight Talk network?? If I install CM 10.2 will that fix my issues? Or am I at the mercy of the Straight Talk Customer Service gurus? Is there anyway to manually program my device back onto the network?

This APP is asking for a SIM card to be inserted into a GSM phone. MY phone is the CDMA variant that doesn't use a SIM card. Is there any other way to get this phone registered onto the network? I guess I'm about to call Straight Talk to see what their tech support (if any) can figure out.
If it helps any, My Network says Unknown, Service State says Out of service, Mobile network state says Disconnected, My phone number says Unknown, the MIN says Unknown, PRL version is set to 1, IP address is Unavailable, and under device it says Modified.

at home, i have the packet for the BYOP plan, and in it is a QR code for both GSM and another for CDMA versions.. This is supposed to take you to download an app that will up your settings for you. Guess the linked one above is for GSM only. When i get home, I will scan that and give you the latest link.
Good luck with Straight talk "support"..

That would be greatly appreciated! The Straight Talk support line was of no help at all. Basically just told me to get a new phone. I find it hard to believe that it's impossible to get the settings back to where they need to be. I appreciate your help!

Sorry, bad news... that QR code points to the app i already sent you.. so i guess that's not going to help.
I found this though..
http://apn-settings.com/straight-talk-apn-settings-configuration/
Might be worth trying to set your settings to that to see what happens.
I know when i flashed CM10.2 and CM11 on mine, the data settings worked without me having to change anything.. so that maybe something worth trying.
No luck with anything. I believe my problem was flashing a native Verizon TW ROM, instead of just going the AOSP route. Maybe the kernel or the modem/radio conflicted with it somehow, kicking it completely off of the network. What is the PRL supposed to be? My PRL is set to "1". I'm thinking that could be the reason it can't see the network.
Is there any way to either manually program the phone onto the network, or either reflash the stock kernel or radio?

There isnt really a way to program the device manually...but might i make a suggestion? try resetting the phone. now that you have the nandroid restore done, try going ahead and doing a factory reset from the settings. Surprisingly it helped my issue.
I've ran into this problem myself. I tried restoring to a backup and installing different ROMs. The only thing that worked was to Odin back to stock ST and start fresh. I have the file if anyone needs it

What I just did (and keep in mind I have no idea if it will be of any help to you) is I reverted my recovery to the stock image, and forced a hard factory reset. Originally I was having issues with data connectivity and speeds, and so far (after doing all the above) it seems to have worked. My last resort, assuming the above was unsuccessful, was to go to a local Verizon Retailer and buy a new SIM (though I have two on hand at the moment, so that would be a last last LAST resort).
Alternatively, what ROM are you currently on? I know that when I flashed a GPE ROM and began fiddling with the phone's network settings, I lost all data connectivity. Perhaps try what @spy4ka suggested in a thread I opened a while back?
spy4ka said:
As I understand, you have the Google edition. I had the same problem. It is an easy fix:
1 go to phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#*
2 click on phone information
3 under preferred network type select LTE/GSM/CDMA auto
4 wait for signal bars to show up and you're done.
Hope it helped.

Finally, you could attempt to restore from someone else's Nandroid/backup, if all the above fails. Here is a thread with links to a Nandroid created by @krazie1, though you will have to ask his permission to gain access to them.

Hey, I could help you. There are 2 main reasons you don't get data: 1 it is a software problem( which is fixable) and 2 it is a hardware problem( which is not).
First you would change these in your phone: ROM, kernel and modem( I don't think they do modems now ). We will focus on ROM and kernels.
The very first thing that you should do in backup your data. Trust me it will help a lot ( I have some really nasty stories about how I flashed the wrong thing and I soft bricked my phone).
Next you should install a stock ROM. ACR is good and lightweight ( plus it flashes a kernel for you, so yay). You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716597
Now flash this thing.
If you still are not getting your data try flashing the stock kernel. You could find to here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712793
If none of these work, you have a hardware problem and return it.
Hope it helps.

I would first follow @spy4ka's recommendations, especially flashing the stock Sense 6 ROM's kernel. If that still doesn't help, I actually would suggest getting a new SIM card instead of a full factory reset... for now. Since you have access to 3G data, you have at least solved part of your data connection problem, and to me seems like it may just now be a faulty SIM (such as failing to activate/is now a complete dud). After all that, if you still have issues with data, I can coach you through reverting your recovery back to the stock image and performing a factory reset (you will lose all data on your internal memory, along with root, which is why this shouldn't be done unless all the above fails). If that still doesn't work, then your final option would be as @spy4ka suggested, returning you current device and getting a replacement. If you are still within Verizon's 14 day trial period, then this will be a free replacement. Otherwise, it will have to be through your phone's insurance, and will likely cost $99.
