you will need fastboot installed on your pc
put the phone into fastboot/flash mode
open a command prompt
type
fastboot flash recovery name of your recovery here
you didnt specify what phone you have, i know this method works on moto phones, other than that i cant say.
i know you dont want to use an app, but honestly, flashify should work on almost any phone and is the simplest way.
put recovery on phone, open flashify, flash new recovery, profit....

I think the answer is very simple:
When you type the command you must type in the full path to the recovery image file. It will depend on where you saved it, but for example when I flash it, I have to type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery c:\android-sdk\tools\recovery-clockworkmod-3.0.2.4-crespo.img
Just make sure you type all the folder names exactly as they are on your system, and type the full exact name of the recovery file you are flashing.
thanks i finally get it to work

Cannot boot the phone i9020 ICS

Hi guys, i tried to install that ROM
on my Nexus S i9020 with cwm.
Now when i try to turn on the phone i can only see the starting animation in loop, or, if i turn on my device in fastboot mode, i can't access the recovery mode, 'cause when i click it i can see the green droid for about 1 sec, but after that only a black screen XD
Before trying to install ICS i had Cyanogen mod 7, then i flashed the stock rom, and then i tried to install ICS
Does anyone know how can i go back to my previous ROM? thanks
Did you try flash this by installing the zip file or did you extract it to your sd card and use backup and restore?
Hmm, it says in the thread title that the nandroid backup is from I9023, not I9020.
If you can still access the fastboot mode then it's supposed to be easy. Just flash CWM recovery again and then use it to flash any custom ROM you want. Also wipe cache and dalvik-cache just in case.

you need to reflash your recovery(cwm or twrp) via fastboot then restore the nandroid backup that you made(you made a nandroid backup, right?) if no nandroid backup was made, flash a rom that you know will boot. you did realize that you restored a nandroid backup from a 9023 when you have a 9020? and it said tested on a 9023. anyways, you shouldnt restore other peoples nandroid backups, you should flash your roms. by restoring other peoples roms, you pickup other peoples issues as well.
Hi guys, I'm facing the same problem as the thread starter here. Using I9023. I still can load the fastboot mode but how do I reflash CWM in fastboot mode?
Sorry if this seems like a noob question. Thanks a lot!
thanks everyone, i solved it downloading the cwm img from the cwm's site, flashing it with fastboot and then restoring my backup
Hi Bryo92, may I know how you flash it using fastboot?

fastboot flash recovery your-recovery-file.img
Hi suksit, I have installed the SDK, and placed the CWM recovery file image in the same folder as the fastboot executable. i tried the below command line on terminal but it says no such command is found.
i didn't placed the CWM recovery file image in the same directory as the fastboot.exe; i placed it in my desktop and then i wrote in the command prompt
"cd C:\path\to\fastboot.exe\"
and then
" fastboot flash recovery C:\path\to\desktop\recovery.img "

You're in the wrong directory.
If you're using Windows 7, press Shift + Right click on the folder which contains fastboot.exe and CWM recovery image, select "Open command window here", then type the command.
Or you could do what Bryo92 suggested, use the command cd directory-that-contains-fastboot first, then type the command.

What command did you use to flash recovery?
Make sure than when you flash a recovery through Fastboot, you use the following:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
The recovery must be in the same folder as fastboot/ADB
Let me know if you need any more help!
not using manual method
i didnt used manual method for install ruu.i just used flashy tool mentioned in given thread see it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467356
but it just stock me euro ruu.but when i hboot n select recovery here still showing me clockwork mode.
so again i rooted my phone and installed clockwork mode and try to remove by
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img but it isnt work.(by terminal emulator)
i doing this because if once clockwork mode removed i can unroot and relock my bootloader and its same as before and i will have ota updates.
but nothing is work.
and see i found these three methods.please see them all and then tell which one is preffered i tried them all but cant remove clock work mode.
first one is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567628
and second is here:
http://androidforums.com/htc-wildfi...arvel-a510e-gsm-software-version-2-3-5-a.html
(in second method i dont use: Procedure 3: Flashing the ROM manually from a command prompt using fastboot)
and last one is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467844
it is fine.get ruu europe but still clockwork recovery mode.
so now tell me what should i do?
and there are no ruu asia_india.exe file so i have to use europe rom version coz its same as mine.
I'd go with the third method - it's the easiest, and you don't have to flash anything manually
done!!
hey thnx.i choose third but it wont work with my ruu.so i used your command with fastboot
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
and its done..thanks it restored my wfs with factory state and able to update via fota.

I'm glad it worked for you!
There is no substitute for 'manual' flashing in my eyes, it shows you every step and you can actually see whether it has worked or not Plus, it's a handy skill to have for when you change devices, or when there's no tools available
Enjoy!

[Q] Recovery mode does not work

Hey there!
I have the follwing problem:
I tried to install the Cyanogen mod on my htc explorer.
I followed the instructions posted here, but when it comes to the part where I have to go in the recovery mode.
And It seems, that I have not installed the Clockworkmod recovery correctly, so I cant get into it.
When I choose reset to factory settings in the bootloader mode, and when I try to start the phone,
there is only the "htc" symbol which stays there and the phone does not start.
Is there a possibility to save the phone or did I destroy it? =D
Thanks, and sorry for my bad explanations =D

I didnt get anything from the post. you have to be little bit specific.
i mean you
1. unlocked bootloader(fine)
2. installed twrp(also fine)
3. installed cm13(great)
4. you reverted back to stock rom??? How from twrp, flashfire or fastboot.?
and now how are you trying to install twrp? from fastboot?
Flash twrp image with fastboot, start TWRP, reboot recovery within TWRP, then twrp sticks... profit.

TWRP is not sticking...
1) Start the bootloader, flash TWRP in fastboot with the command: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img (Replace twrp.img with the name of the TWRP img file)
2) Press VOL DN to start Recovery and select it, TWRP should start... When prompted if you should allow changes to system, say YES or allow or whatever so that is allowed to mount system as read-write.
3) In the TWRP main menu, select Reboot, then Reboot - Recovery
4) The device will restart and TWRP will start again, if asked to allow changed changes to system again, allow it
5) Go to Mounts and make sure Mount System Read-Only is NOT ticked
6) Press Home, then Reboot and Reboot Recovery again
TWRP will start again and be set, it will not go away unless you flash something with a recovery.img in the file (custom ROMs do not normally contain this file).

At what point? What command are you using to perform the flash?
I'm sorry... I've just done this on numerous G3's and what you are describing doesn't just happen for no reason... either the initial flash was done incorrectly, the process to set it was not followed, or there is actually a defect in the device (which is unlikely if TWRP boots even once after bring flashed).

NEVER USE KINGROOT OR KINGOROOT on a Moto G3 with Marshmallow, it will soft brick... We have seen at least a half dozen specific examples by experienced users... Somehow you got lucky, but I would never recommend this method to a user.
Now, once rooted Flashify is a viable option.
