Firstly, I have to say that this issue might only relate to Chinese-Simplified users, so if you do not want to spend your time on this, you may just skip it.
The phenomenon description:
The device is Nexus 5 32 GB UNROOTED (never rooted).
>set language as Chinese Simplified, and the Google Search bar (the Google Now entry) will not work. Input the key words and I can only get a whirling circle.
> Change the system language to Chinese Traditional or English (US/UK, etc), search via the Google search bar again, and it instantly works.
> Change the language back to Chinese Simplified and the Google search bar will be workable in the next ~1 day. After about 24 hours, I have to change the system language to activate the Google search bar again. I have "solved" this kind of issues for many times, but you know that this is not a "solution". Anybody know the reason for this phenomenon?
Additional information:
* This issue should not be related to the network condition because the Google search bar work immediately after changing the language.
** This issue only happened on my Nexus 5 but never on the *nexus 4*. My nexus 4 is always in the Chinese Simplified language condition and the Google search bar works well.
*** Switching the system language will also affect the Google maps cache. After changing (and changing back), the Google maps app will say that the cached maps have expired (in fact it was just cached hours ago).
So, is this a bug only on nexus 5? Is there a way to completely solve the problem and make the search bar work just like it on the nexus 4?
Thank you guys.

I'm curious if google changed things recently. Downloaded the tts I had on my old android phone and I find that no matter what, Google maps/nav will only play in the default voice, even if it's not that good. I prefer to use Ivona.
Any feedback?

Check out this thread, it might not completely answer your question but it should point you in the right direction.

I have the problem that Google Maps doesn't use the selected TTS engine (SVOX Classic or Ivona) even if it has the same language as the global phone language specified in the system settings.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks
Hello ;0)
I noticed a strange behaviour on my Nexus 5 (or maybe Google changed something?):
On my Nexus 4 I had an option in the settings of Google Now to activate some apps that I could search "within" the Google Search. All I had to do was to activate them and then, on the bottom of the search results, I would swipe the small bar to the right till I got to the phone entry and it would show me search results from the specified apps and I could open the app from there and it would take me to the result within the app.
For example: A search for "Sarah Miche" would pop up as "Sarah Michelle Gellar" with an imdb and a wikipedia icon, I clicked that and the wikipedia/imdb app would start and open the page about Sarah Michelle Gellar.
I quite liked that and used it a lot...
On my Nexus 5 however the option is gone. The settings are still there. In Google Now under settings-phone search but it just enables me to search apps/Chrome Beta/Contacts/Play Movies. And "apps" will just allow me to search for apps I installed on my phone not to search "inside" those apps. (See screenshots)
So I thought "Meeehhhhh, f****. They removed a feature I really liked. Guess I have to live with that..."
Now for the strange part:
I installed google search and GEL on my tablet (running Android 4.3) an the option is still there (but it´s called "tablet-search" and "tablet")
AND IT´S WORKING... (See screenshots) Same freaking Google-Search build, same freaking GEL-build....
Am I doing something wrong ?!?!? Does my phone hate me ? What´s up with that ?
Any help would be appreciated ;0)
Thanks ...
P.s.: Sorry my phone and my tablet are in german but you should get the picture ;0)
Same here, I don't even have "Chrome Beta" in the list.
But therein probably lies the answer: Google changed the way how Apps can "apply" to be shown in this list and not even the latest stock Chrome version has this feature yet (but the newer Beta does).
Also it seems to be a problem for the new GEL only, the list still works properly on my N10 with Google Search 3.1.8.x.
I've read mention of a new API for this functionality and that devs need to apply it to their apps. Just weird that Google itself hasn't applied it to all their apps.

Think you can find more info on that? As a developer I'd like to know, as my app uses the global search feature and it stopped working recently.

Any news on this?
On a side note, I created a question on Stackoverflow with the same issue.
On my nexus 7 2012 I installed the 3.1 from the Nexus 5 a few weeks ago. After a reset of Google Search data the tablet search broke like on your Nexus 5...but I only noticed it when I upgraded to kitkat. I obviously thought it was kitkat the problem until today.
The problem is how Google Search 3.x handles the list. There must be a bug of some sort.
Here's why:
On my htc one s with cm10.2 (4.3) I reset the data of Search 3.1.8 to try something only to discover that the Phone Search list was almost empty like on my tablet!
I uninstalled it and the 2.6.7 version was restored from /system/app. The phone search list was full now, even after I updated to 3.1.8.
So, basically, if you open Google Search 2.x and then you update to 3.x the list will be there like it always did.
Who updated to kitkat without resetting the data won't have any problems (or whoever update to 3.1.8 on any phone\tablet without data reset)

I found this commit in AOSP, which might be related:
https : // android.googlesource.com/platform/packages/apps/QuickSearchBox/+/ecf356c15143ab0583c64682de16d94a57f7dd1c
The commit message tells us that this feature was removed due to performance reasons (which might or might not be true, given that it references an internal ticket id and I didn't find a public issue here about this).
Since this part of the quicksearchbox is included in the ROM and released with Android 4.4, it doesn't matter which version of Google-Search you have installed. As long as you have updated to Android Kitkat 4.4 or newer, you won't be able to search the contentproviders of installed apps.
Nevertheless, I found this nifty, but ugly and ad-driven little app, which mimics device-search:
https : // play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.startapp.quicksearchbox
You should decline the initial request and ignore its Android 2.x-ugliness, though.
It takes some getting used to, but it works.

Hello I have installed Archidroid 2.5 ROM, but I have a problem with the research on the phone.
When I enter in the settings of google and now I open the page "search on the phone" there is no app is completely empty.
So I can not look in the app Email.
I think this problem is related to the app Google now.
So there is no way to make it work on the Cyano rom based?
Possible solution
Try to uninstall Google Search and do a update from Google Play. Worked for me.
Hello,
i've got a very annoying problem in Chrome on my Nexus 4 (posting this here, as it should be the same for the Nexus 5). I've changed my phone language settings to Spanish a few months ago, but didn't like that Chrome was sending this information to every page, resulting in Spanish google results and so on. So i changed the system language back to English. However, Chrome is still apparently sending the information to display the Spanish version of every page i'm visiting. It's very annoying and it's been months since i've changed it back to English, and it's still doing this.
Any idea how i can fix this?
EDIT - short version: The browser itself is English, but it's requesting the Spanish version of websites - even though system language is set to English.
Does nobody have an idea how i can fix this?
Clear Chrome's data or factory reset the phone

Clear google chrome data/cache and reconnect your Google account with chrome.. If it's still Spanish then check whether the Google account you have connected has Spanish set in it's settings?!

Uninstall chrome and reinstall chrome beta, while your at it, click on settings and bandwidth you can save 33%through compression etc. I'm lucky to be on 3 UK but those who are not it's a good saving

Thanks, deleting the data actually worked!
I ran into a problem with the recent update to the Google Text-To-Speech app.
I was testing out and trying to decide between the new high quality US and UK English voices. Somehow my default language for speech got locked into UK English: I can no longer change it to anything else, even though my default device language is US English and I have downloaded both the low and high quality US English voices.
See my screenshots - despite me changing my chosen language to US English in the Google Text-to-speech Engine settings in the 1st screenshot, once I hit the back button (or exit via the home / recent apps buttons), my default language reverts to UK English as per the 2nd screenshot.
Is there any system file I can edit to change this absurd behaviour? I'm rooted and willing to get my hands dirty...
UPDATE:
I played around with settings and managed to resolve the problem.
Clearing data from / un- and re-installing the app / restoring data from another device didn't work - what did work was choosing another default device language (NOT the voice language under Text-to-speech output). This somehow released the "lock" on UK speech and allowed me to choose US instead. I then reverted the default device language to US English.
All is now good in the world :victory:
Trying going to Google Text-to-speech or Google TTS, whichever one it is, in the app settings and clear data.

That was one of the first things I tried, but it didn't help.
Anyway I managed to resolve the problem already. Gonna update the OP.

Hi,
I just flashed the nexus 5 official image for android 6.0; I have used adb and fastboot and I flashed everything but the userdata.img (as I did with all previous updates). Everything looks fine with the exception of google now on tap: if I long press the home "button" it only takes me to the regular google now page. The google app is version 5.3 (which is supposed to enable on tap), I tried both google now launcher and nova, but the result is always the same, standard google now page with no content relevant to the page/app I was in.
Is it expected ? do i have to enable it somehow ?
thanks
bye
Enrico
It only works with system language set to English. You then have to enable it under Settings - Google - Search and Now. You'll find a toggle there for Now On Tap, which isn't there with the system language set to anything other than English.
I posted about it on r/Nexus5 this morning, too.
Thanks, that worked.
Too bad on tap is not available for all other languages ...
bye
Enrico
Google Now On Tap doesn't work if you have it set on your Google Apps account. If you use/switch to your gmail account (and set it on english language) the feature does work. Hopefully this feature is made available to those of us on google apps account soon! The on tap feature is pretty neat.
The point is that the limitations on languages and accounts are not exactly advertised; either they are going to be fixed soon or google is hiding them behind the carpet ...
My system language is set to English (US), but the now on tap toggle goes back to off as soon as I press on Get Started.
mine does the same, I'm on US English but the now on tap toggle goes back to off as soon as I press on Get Started.
