Help with flashing firmware. - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to samsung so I was wondering if you flash new modems and firmware through a custom recovery like twrp or if I would have to use odin? I really don't want to have to go through backing everything up, flashing through odin, and re flashing my rom and mods as well as all my data.

Modem won't flash with recovery yet. But kernels, roms and recoveries can. But using odin is quick and easy so no big deal in my opinion.
And there are versions that I posted which won't wipe the data. So you won't have to restore anything.

Question of steps to flash custom rom

So I'm about to flash a custom rom an I'm confused about flashing the roms an kernels. I'm already rooted and know to flash recovery via ez recovery. I plan on running Synergy. Is there anything else I should do prior to flashing roms, specifically synergy? I know these roms are built for the what was locked bootloader so do these roms just flash the stock kernel when you flash the rom? Thanks

Boot into recovery and Make a backup of your current setup. Then wipe data and cache and dalvik. Then flash the Rom. If it asks you to skip or disable recovery flash upon trying to reboot click yes.
Thanks. Yeah I got all that but more concerned if I need to flash a kernel with the rom. I also here about backing up the IMEM or something like that.

You don't need to flash a kernel with Synergy. Just flash the ROM (with proper backup and recovery of course)! You also don't need to worry about IMEI for now. There was a backup process with the efs partition, but people have just been rewriting it with QPST if they lose it. Have fun!

No prob! Just for a little more information, you CAN backup your efs partition and restore it still, but the issues have been with AOSP ROMS. It probably a good idea to do it, but considering you're talking about Synergy and there's a way to rewrite it, you probably don't NEED to. Also, as far as flashing kernels, the ROM threads usually say if they also come with a kernel or not, whether they need kexec or not (soon a thing of the past!), and what kernels they are compatible with. Generally speaking, a TW ROM needs a TW kernel (like the stock kernel), and an AOSP ROM needs an AOSP kernel.
The last option to backup your IMEI is:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/
I'd go ahead and do it and then you don't need to worry
All good information I've been exactly looking for lol. But yeah the whole kexec thing has really confused me.

4.3 Roms will not boot

I have flashed many 4.3 Roms and can not get any of them to boot. I have followed all install instructions but can't get past gs3 screen. Any ideas?

im having a similar problem to yours..i mean after i do a fresh install+gapps it works..but after i go back to recovery and install my other files it wont go past the gs3 logo no idea why.
Yep frustrating any other ROM is OK just 4.3 not working, sucks.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I've flashed every 4.3 and all booted. Try just flashing ROM first. Let sit a few minutes then flash gapps. I also use the eclipse ROM gapps for all. No issues.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I also have the same problem when I try to reboot on 4.3 Roms. First boot up is fine. But when I go into to recovery it won't boot back up unless I reflash the ROM from the start. If someone tries flashing ROM and gapps separately let us know if it fixes it.

Tried eclipse ROM and apps. No different. Initial boot works and ROM runs fine but reboot freezes up on gs3 screen. What is getting scrambled and is there a way to fix this.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I've never had this issue. What I've done/used to flash all 4.3 roms was use the super wipe tool found in the general section(the one that wipes data, system and caches only) and then run it once and flash Rom+ gapps as instructed. I use twrp as well. Also, perhaps it's a stock 4.3 kernel and maybe flash a kernel straight after you flash the rom and gapps. Rom> gapps>kernel . Hope it helps

[Mod][Utility] Wiping Tools - Simple and Fast

I used ez recovery from the play store and used cwm touch recovery and I no longer have the reboot issues. Even if you're using cwm, I would just download ez recovery and try it.

Use ez recovery to flash the ROM or install cwm and then flash through that?

I had a similar problem when I first tried 4.2 but I've found two ways that have always worked for me
Full wipe (I wipe everything 3 times, but I'm sure that's overkill)
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Reboot
If it gets stuck on any screen wipe the cache and dalvik cache
Reboot
The other method I've only used with Dirty Unicorns
Full wipe
Flash rom
Reboot
Once the rom reboots, reboot back into recovery
Flash gapps
Reboot
Wait 10 minutes
You can either reboot again or just use as is
But if nothing is working you can odin back to stock
Then use this tool to root, unlock the bootloader, and flash the custom recovery of your choice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825 (it even works on a mac)
(This is what I always use to root, unlock the bootloader, and flash recovery whenever I have to flash back to stock)
After I do that I always reboot and use Rom Manager to flash the latest recovery before flashing anything else.
These 2 roms have been 100% stable for me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484256 (4.3.1)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469789 (4.3 I've never tried the weeklies just the lastest stable build)
Hope it helps
It seems that most ROMs will boot up fine with the latest TWRP recovery. But there are a few that will only boot up with CWM. So download both recoveries and flash them using ez recovery when one of them isn't working.
So, I usually stick with TWRP 2.6 as my default. The great thing about ez is that it includes cwm in it. First off I'd make sure you're running the latest recovery available. Then if that doesn't work restore your backup, hopefully you made one, and flash cwm and try reflashing the ROM. Assuming you're wiping everything at least 3 times and flashing the correct ROM with the correct gapps, there's no reason why it shouldn't work. And another thing. It's never a good idea to restore data from any app, ever. Trust me, I know.

You do realize that the recoveries built into ez recovery are over a year old. I wouldn't flash those under any circumstances. Only use ez recovery to flash from the custom slot.

Thanks for correcting me on that one. My bad.

[q] please help

Hello everyone i currently flashed my sph-d710 or sprint gaxy s2 to a kit kat rom. now first i tried flashing back to other roms, nothing lower then jb and i cant. so i was thinking of flashing a rom and tried backing up through rom manager and it brought me into recovery with an error. My a.d.d. having ass deleted the villumanti by accident b4 the error and i wiped/reset everything including cache during the error, and couldnt flash anything (i tried 3 roms). IN THE END I REBOOTED ALL WAS THERE.I think i have an idea of what happened. I think it could be due to a modem issue e.g. downgrading from kit kat to jb. Should i flash a custom kernel thru mobile odin and get the recovery from there(IM RUNNING THE LATEST CWM I BELIEVE)or should i boot into recovery wipe all data cache reboot recovery and flash the modem, reboot into recovery again proceed as normal. Also what modem should i use. If ive been to vague or you need any more info let me know. P.s. I ASK THAT ANY MOD WOULD APPROPIATELY PLACE THIS THREAD IN THE RIGHT SECTION SHOULD IT BE IN THE WRONG THANK YOU

[Q] Flashable Stock Firmware

I'm looking for a flashable zip of 174.44.1. I'm on the latest stock, rooted firmware but my phone is really slow lately. I want to flash the stock firmware, rather than do a factory reset, so I can keep root.
I did a search, and found a thread with the OTA, but I'm hesitant of flashing it, as the file is only 10mb.
Can anyone point me in the direction of the file I am looking g for, if it exists?

You cannot flash the firmware using custom recovery.. Why because during the flashing process, all recoveries, system data, etc needs to be deleted.. That's y..

Thanks for replying. I didn't know I wasn't possible to flash stock firmware with a custom recovery.
This is my first Motorola device, all prior devices have been Samsung. For my last one (SGS 3), there were stock flashable zips I could use to return to stock, and some of the stock zips even let you keep root.
I wanted a flashable zip because I will be on the road for the weekend. I guess I will use the Moto G tool to return to stock once I get back home.

Most zips need to be flashed through custom recovery, but it can be done through adb sideload, and there are guides everywhere to show your that. Tars can be flashed through Mobile Odin, and like I said, some stuff can be flashed through adb sideload, and I'm not sure if it will trip Knox through adb or not. But yes, it can be done
