[Q] Low Available Storage Space with new Rom - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what is going on.
after loading a new ROM i have very limited internal storage space left.
Just loaded SOKP rom today and had 1.25gig of space left on a supposedly clean system. Yet if you go the storage tab and add up APPS, Pics -> MISC it only adds up less than 1gig. where is the other 10?
on the bar that color codes the storage space, it looks like 3/4 of it should be available!
i searched and tried these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1908711
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2443267
and nothing seems to free up any space.
i noticed this with other ROMS so it is not ROM specific.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

one thing i found was that spotify's cache took up over 500meg, so i uninstalled spotify then deleted the cached files.
now 2 questions
1) how did it carry over from my previous roms if i wiped and reformatted, etc?
2) how can i find out what other programs / files might be taking up valuable storage space?

new question: i doubt it's this, but just thought i'd throw it out - i use CWM would using TWRP do anything different? from what i've searched it's just personal prefererance.

Touch Diamond - Free Up Some Space?

Hi,
I flashed my HTC Touch Diamond yesterday with this ROM. Suffice to say Im pretty pleased with it, however my Diamond doesnt have a lot of storage space left (on the device, i.e. not the 4GB internal storage or RAM) and as a result I keep getting nasty messages telling me to free up some space etc...
I appreciate that its a beefy ROM with Sense 2.5 but I dont understand what is happening. When i flashed the phone I had about 8MB free. I put a 6MB ringtone into the ringtones folder before noticing how little space that left me with (2MB) and then deleted it. Now a couple of days later I notice that I have less than 1MB of space, yet I havent installed any apps to the device storage so what has been filling the space up? This morning I attempted to install Facebook and Google Maps to the storage card via Marketplace as these were already on the device storage but it doesnt seem to have freed up any space.
Does anyone know how I can free up some space please? None of the apps cooked into the ROM appear in the "Remove Programs" app.
Cheers.
Hi,
Things like e-mail import, text messages, temporary files just take a lot of space of the memory.
AthenaROM is not very good, I suggest you flash for example Gen Y D2X.
Hard-resetting is the only way to clean it up, most of the files are system files that will return after deletion.
Hi thanks for your reply.
I'll check out that other ROM; for the moment I've simply copied some non-Marketplace apps to the storage card and placed shortcuts into the /Windows/Start Menu folder on the device memory. Only thing is the icons dont show, anyone have any ideas please?
Thanks.

[Q] Rooting, Custom ROMs and Available Internal Storage

Hi there!
If I root my Nexus S, will it then be possible to see what's going on in the internal storage? My phone is acting rather strangely when it comes to the internal storage. When I delete an app's cache (from Settings/Apps) the indicated space does not get freed up. On the contrary, an equivalent amount of space gets subtracted from the indicated amount of free internal storage! On most occasions when I uninstall an app the space gets freed up. However, recently I had 300 MB available when I installed Chrome browser. That took up about 50 MB, so I had a remaining 250 MB available. I uninstalled it again and now I only have 200 MB free. I often get notifications that there is too little storage space available when updating rather small apps (typically less than 20 MB).
With a rooted phone, will I be able to see what's going on and easily locate and delete redundant files? (Back in the days I felt I had a lot better control and overview over my Pocket PC. With my Android I struggle to make sense of what's going on. Well, not that I´m going back...)
I'm not really asking for a quick solution to the problem because it seems from other discussions that this isn't possible. But I'd like to avoid running into the same problem again after a hard reset, rooting, or ROM change.
Cheers,
Larry

hey Larry,
first of all after you're rooted you can see all of your files and folders from...well..root directory
before doing so i'd try to move apps to SD or from SD depends where the low space is: http://i.stack.imgur.com/Aof9r.png
Hi eytan!
As I said, I'm short of internal storage. I've already moved just about everything possible out of the internal memory. Moving programs out of internal storage does result in more internal storage (as long as there's something left to move). However, this does not explain why my internal memory is disappearing. I ought to have a lot more available internal memory - at least 400 MB.
Yes, that's what rooting does. Maybe I should have elaborated a bit... Will it make sense without extensive knowledge of the Android system. It seems like instead of cache (and certain programs like chrome browser) being deleted they are somehow being copied within the internal storage. I was wondering if I would be able to locate this - find some folder that has grown 50 MB in case of the google chrome uninstallation. Or will all this data be stacked up in some sort of system file that isn't accessible.

well, you can always search your phone by folder size and locate the origin of this.
i guess your best chances are at DATA folder, just be careful and make sure you delete only things your'e sure that are already uninstalled and just have "leftovers"

[Q] Storage? Storage!

OK, I am having storage/space issues with my Blaze that are making the cameras inoperable (I keep getting a message stating there's a lack of memory or space on the SD card). I am running CM10 Stable on Android 4.1.2 with the CM kernel.
When I go into Settings and look at the Storage, here's what it says (I tried taking Screenshots but they didn't work):
Total Space= 1.12GB
814MB of Apps
252MB Available
Internal Storage= 1.4GB
208MB Apps
553MB Pics/Videos
4.78MB Downloads
SD Card= 3.69MB Total Space
1.99GB Available
Here's the thing: I have NO pics/videos, yet somehow 553 MB are being used for this. So what's the deal? Can someone give me the quickie/noob explanation? Or at least explain what's the best way to control your storage on the Blaze (and yes, I've used Search but haven't really found what I was looking for)? I would really appreciate it, this is a very annoying and frustrating issue.
Thanks!

i think you never cleaned up ur cache and over time lots of crap got accumulated hogging up all your space...also u need to look into your thumbnails as they tend to stay over time even if you move the actual photo...all you need to do is to backup your apps and their data n then boot in recovery mode and do a factory reset and then boot and go to any file manager and move whatever pics and vids you have on internal storage(by change if u have any) to external storage and delete the DCIM folder then...if even that doesnot let you do anything i think you are in need to format your system, cache, data and dalvik and flash the rom u use fresh and start over...you will be good as new then for sure even if it takes lil more time to set up things as u want again but thats better than being frustated and not able to do anything...hope that helps you
Check the ".thumbnails" directory under DCIM (or camera, I forget). My daughter's blaze seems to like accumulating 100+MB files I'm there.
Definitely check app cache too. The Cheeseburger Network app was pulling 500MB of cache on my S2.

I was traveling but I read your recommendations and deleted a ton of files under DCIM folder. That seems to have fixed the issue for now, thanks so much. But I do need to re-flash the ROM anyway due to another issue so that will help.
Thanks! :good:

Shrinking Internal Storage

Ive recently brought a moto g 2015 less than a week ago and have installed some apps, when i originally did this there was over 1.0gb of free internal space left. Over the week the space has shrunk to 500mb and is now notifiitying me that the internal storage is low (i cleared the cache out 3 hours ago and it was 540mb free now its 500mb so that 40mb in a couple of hours?!).
Ive cleared the cache, ive not installed any extra apps and there hasnt been any significant app upgrades that would use this space, also deleted all content from whatsapp etc and looked in the misc part of the storage and theres nothing using the space.
Has anyone else come across this or have any idea whats using the space up?
Cheers

Alot of apps/games use alot of data storage so that might be your issue and if your storing stuff from downloading like music and photos etc that will take up space as well
Hi thanks for the reply! I've got all my music and pictures stored on an sdcard and haven't downloaded any on this phone or taken any pictures. I'm just not sure what as suddenly used up all this storage that I can't now use in the space of a couple of hours without me doing anything on the phone or any apps updating
I had that to on a old phone, i think its your google play services.
my tip is to look in your apps and see what apps use to much space, than try to delete it
Probably other apps accumulating stored data, as was mentioned above. Chrome will grow over time, Google drive, Facebook etc.

You can move apps to the SD also. OP doesn't say they did that, but that can be done. Just go to settings, Apps, and then "ON SD CARD" tab. Any apps that can be moved will show there. Note that not 100% of the apps info can be moved, but most of it can. for example if you have an app that is 100MB, and move it, you will still have about 20MB on internal. Still better than the full 100MB.
Thanks for all the suggestions, ive tried them all and got a lot of free space back. Also found that google drive had 500mb of data which ive deleted!

Link2SD Help Please

Hi everyone. Sorry for starting a new post, but I looked and I wasn't sure where my question fit in. I'm using Link2SD on my kids' tablets and overall it works great. I got really fast (SanDisk extreme) micro SD cards for black Friday and the games run faster than with tablet memory. One thing I'm trying to figure out is why, even though I have both tablets set up mostly the same, one of the tablets has a lot less free space showing. I do have about 400-500 MB more of apps on the tablet showing less free space, BUT it is showing 4.0 GB free space vs. 5.8 GB free space on the other tablet. Why would this be (1.8 GB difference) if all else is the same?
Is it something to do with dalvik/cache? Speaking of it, is it safe to wipe the dalvik/cache through TWRP now that I have Link2SD set up with 30+ apps linked? Do I then just relink the dalvik files after rebooting? Or do things get messed up? I'm hesitant to do any of that because I have everything working well now, except the free space issue.
Or, if I multi-select and then choose to relink everything (apk, dex, internal data), could that help? Everything appears to already be linked correctly, so would relinking mess it up? Also, as a side note, I don't have any lib files linked as I have found that in the past it did mess things up for me. It would cause some apps to re-optimize at every boot, I think because the lib files wouldn't relink, even though I enabled it in the Link2SD settings. So now I stay away from that and all else is good, except this free space issue.
Any ideas on a solution? Is there something else taking up free space that's not listed in internal or system memory? Maybe downloaded Google play books? Or are they listed in the app data? Is the free space shown not correct, and it's actually more? I just can't figure it out. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!!!!
Here are the screenshots. You can see 5.76GB vs 4.07GB, but only 6.94GB vs 7.34GB for internal space difference. Why?
