[Q] Nandroid Backup Restoring Problems - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, first time poster, long time thread stalker. I pray to the Droid gods that you guys can help a poor lowly noob. I recently got a Nexus S which is my first android, woo-hoo! Figured I'd try an oldie but goodie before getting something new. I was running 4.1.2. and I was pretty content but I wanted the freedom to play around a bit. So a few weeks ago I rooted it (using CWM 6.0.4.3) without any problems. Yesterday I decided to be brave and flash a ROM, CM 10.2.1. Before I flashed anything I made a nandroid backup which seemed to go fine. I then decided to make sure the backup worked so I tried to restore it. The restore was unsuccessful, I got some error about not being able to mount /system. Cue panic attack! I tried to boot up the phone which of course didn't work. The Google logo was all like, you shall not pass! More panic! In my head I'm like, way to go you dunderhead, ya broke it! I took a couple hours to woosah and goosfraba in front of the tv and decided to go on with the plan to flash CM since I couldn't boot into my phone anyway. That went fine and I'm running it now. My orange level panic has been downgraded to yellow now that my phone is functional. But I would really like to be able to restore my nandroids at least for the sake of app data. I read something about CWM having problems with 4.2 even though I tried to restore before flashing. Also I've read multiple posts with many contradicting each other all over the interwebs about where nandroids should be, mine are in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. Does anyone have an ideas what the problem could be?
(Sweet baby jesus please don't make me have to do all those Candy Crush levels over again. I beg of thee! All other games I shall shamelessly cheat back to my last known place.)

[Q] ROM Manager Restore Stuck

I've tried searching for this throughout the forums and I guess it's to vague to find an exact answer. So here's my problem:
A while back I had backed my original JI6 ROM for my Samsung Vibrant. I've been playing with a good set of ROMs from Team Whiskey since then. Each one I've been able to restore to a backup made of the previous ROM. However, the backup I had made for my Original Stock ROM will never restore. It just stalls during the restore. I've let it sit for about eight hours overnight a few times, but no real progress there. I'm not sure what I can do really to get that backup restored to my phone.
I have two backups, one when I first installed ROM Manager to my phone and another I made when I wanted to try out a new ROM. Each do not work. I'm either assuming some where the same file was not backed up correctly or the backup is to big? It is about 1.5GB.
Please any help in this matter would help greatly as Samsung is finally ready to release a 2.2 Update and I'd like to try this from my original-ish stock ROM.
Thank you!
nothing? no ideas?
*bump*

[Q] Gingerbread will not install

i dont know what im doing wrong but last week i could install gingerbread with no issues other than the market. because of the market issue i use NVflash to go back to square 1 and start over. so i installed VEGAn 5.1.1 with no problems. after about a day i was reading up on other gingerbread roms so i went to try one and it would install but never finish booting. so i nandroid back to were i was and try the rom i had before with the market issues, that one didnt work either.
what am i missing?
ps i cant get logcat to read any farther than from recovery.
in recovery logcat says "/sbin/sh: logcat: not found"
[solved] got it ^.^
ok dont know what the [email protected]# i did but i got it working.
for any of you that care on how it started working its going to be a long post.
basically on my quest to fix this damn thing i decided to use nvflash which didnt work the first 5 times, so i used the original recovery image rather than the rooted one. that semi-bricked it so it would only boot into APX mode. so after an hour of searching XDA i just flashed the enhanced image (like in the guide on the dev forum) and holy crap it worked and installed VEGAn 7 without updating.
dont know how it fixed it but it did.
Mods can you please delete this thread

[Q] jt's ICS v4 reboots to endless nonrecovery loop

getting to be far too familiar a scenario lately....
lately EVERY time i reboot my phone (running ics build 2, 3 and 4, stock kernel) it gets stuck on samsung logo.. somehow my phone will only boot into the frigging cm7 recovery which as im sure youre all aware is rather useless to fix any problems im having in ics and leaves me unable to flash, backup, or restore anything. it's quite frustrating and i have no idea how to fix it but by going back to bml, re-partitioning, then odin ei20 modem, cm7 fixed recovery, then flash back to ics but doin this every reboot it getting very tedious..
ive read about recovery loops, but the fix doesnt work for me as i cant mount the ICS /system partition in cm7 recovery...and ive been all over trying a zillion things to get it to work and havent pulled dmesg or logcat but if someone thinks it would be useful ..i wish i knew why EVERYTHING is great, then BANG, reboot and it's FML city.
i should add this phone is a replacement via insurance and that the entire time ive had it, i've been having this problem to varying degrees of intensity,.sometimes if i rebooted enough the ics boot animation would finally come up and freeze part way through, and in the first week with this phone is seemed fine. the first few times i rebooted and battery pulled until it started but this is the fourth time in two weeks ive found myself going back to repartition from odin and then back to ics.. the phone is only mine for a month,.
if nobody has any ideas ill be getting it replaced tomorrow in store. i have the no fee insurance replacement plan, but i would prefer not to have to use another as it's not under warranty and this would be my second replacement and this mes has to last me until the gnex hits uscc in hopefully april if it ever does because i'd rather switch to vzw than take any of usccs other offerings currently.. if they dont get the gnex it'll be time for me to move on...
anyway please advise.. thanks
You're asking this at the wrong forum dude. You wont get any support here. Everyone's moved to Rootzwiki

Yep but when fishing it helps to have multiple lines in the water...
Past experience
From what ive found out, once you have ICS flash on ur phone, ur not going to want to use the three finger salute. If you want to boot into recovery, only do it by rebooting into recovery through ics

NVM didnt see it in dev when i looked (please delete)

So I have been bouncing back and fourth between jellywiz and my stock nandroid (whatever the latest JW on the weekend and stock so I know I have no issues during work week)
Just getting ready to crash and I pick up my phone and clockwork is running and trying to flash something and keeps repeatedly failing... WTF?? Last I had touched it was about an hour ago and was playing amazons FAOTD from 2 days ago. Nothing else.. didnt hit anything, touch anything, just sitting there plugged in.
So I mash the no button on clockwork becasue its asking me if I want to try flashing again, and reset the phone. When it powers back on and fully boots up it tells me software update failed (much like an OTA message)
Everything else seems fine, but im just curious as to OTA or WTF becuase I have never had a phone that booted into clockwork by itself and attempt to flash something.
Yes, there is.....

[Q] restoring from backup works but system apps crash after

Greetings to All the wonderful hardworking people here!
Grab a coffee I'm going to try to be as thourogh as possible.
To start with I own and am writing this post on a SCH-I535 that is rooted, unlocked and running cm10.0.
Two weeks ago I flashed cm10 to my phone. The first time I flashed from ROM manager and it didn't take; went to rolling boot. So I restored my backup and the phone worked perfectly as it should. <-- key point there. So I waited a few days and decided to try again after doing more research and successfully flashed cm10 to my phone. I have been very happy with it as a daily driver for the last two weeks. MMS doesn't work but I can live without it. After initial flashing Skype worked flawlessly. As of yesterday 2-11-13 I can hear people but all they can hear from me is the sound of a wind tunnel. I have tried re installing Skype... re flashing the ROM to no avail. I have searched for a fix and have been unsuccessful.
So now I want to return to stock and wait till cm10.1 stable is out. I restored from my backup thinking it would be smooth like last time but I was wrong. 1st attempt android KB won't load. 2nd attempt the desktop app wouldn't load and third attempt it just kept failing on everything it seemed like. Finally I re flashed my cm backup I had and am rolling for now. What do I need to do to get my stock backup working?
If u need any additional info I'll be more than happy to get it for u.
Figured it out,,,
I solved it myself. when directly searching for a similar problem to mine i found nothing. I was watching some flashing videos and seen that some users would format /data /cache /system. I did this, restored my stock backup and everything is working fine now.
