I came across a website which talks about the 4.4.3 dialer app. It mentions features that I don't have on my dialer. Specifically the ability to lookup local numbers.
For fun, I downloaded it onto my Nexus 7, and lo and behold it really works as described in the article. I find that if I type in the names of local businesses/restaurants etc and it really does find their number.
So if this is the same 4.4.3 dialler why don't I have this feature on the Moto G running 4.4.3?
Here is the link to the article that sparked my interest.

I have not dared to install the dialler app on my Moto G (yet). I wonder is this feature switched on and off depending on country etc? Or perhaps Motorola has disabled the lookup capability?

It works on my phone

The lookup features are present in the Google dialer, which looks exactly the same, but also has that feature. The stock Motorola rom doesn't have it, however, the gpe and custom roms with gapps installed have it.

I've read in the reviews that the nexus 5 is the first device that offers certain new google features, like sending the phone numbers of incoming calls to google so they can show you a google+ pic of the caller or the 'ok google' voice activation. i don't understand though if those are features contained in the general kitkat or just in the official nexus 5 rom? so if i would install an evervolv or cyanogenmod based on 4.4 on the nexus, would those features be gone or disabled or are they always there and active?
Part of kitkat i do believe
Phones run whatever the OS tells it to.. unless its hardware specfic...
that particular feature seems to be part of the new google dialer, so if you install a gapps package that contains the 4.4 dialer you'll end up with it, if you install e.g. the google core apps only you'll get the aosp dialer and this feature is not in there.
Moto X has an even better implementation of "Ok Google" with it's Touchless Controls and that was pre 4.4
Hello!
This is my first post and my very first Android phone of all time - so excuse me if I asked something that is so obvious. I am still learning!
I have a Moto G Google Play Edition and I am very happy about everything with it (It's my travel phone, my primary driver is an iPhone 5S and a BlackBerry Z10) I read a lot of article about this phone before I settled on my very first Android and I heard a lot of good things about using stock Android. There is just one catch, the stock Camera app sucks and does not take HDR pictures. Is there a way to load the Motorola Camera App on this phone without rooting? I googled a few methods on the internet and doesn't seem to work (Obviously it wouldn't install from the Google Play Store, I also tried downloading the apk but it doesn't install on my phone.)
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

if you want functions this has loads. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.almalence.opencam
It's nice but it's not the same interface
I am a purist...
Hi does any one have the nexus 5 phone dialler as an apk file. This allows for Google now search contacts and for places nearby.

This has been a question asked when the N5 came out. I don't think anyone has pulled the dialer apk from the N5. I was disappointed when I realized that feature wasn't present after the kit kat update. Perhaps it's an exclusive feature of the N5. I've been using "contakts" for my dialer and contact list and have been happy with it. I love the translucency provided by 4.4 and its GUI. Here's the play link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.raunaqsawhney.contakts
I'll throw you a bone, since searching is so hard.

By the way, this was literally the very first link that came up when I searched for it on Google. It was really buried at the top of the page.
Mr Orange 645,
Thank you but the mega link is not available and that app crashes. Also Googledialer is not on the play web site. Some have said to rename files but as I'm not rooted I cant.

Thanks for contakts app but really want the N5 dialler.
Just shows that the Moto X is not vanilla android as stated

Found this to enable root is required and permission changes http://m.pocketnow.com/2013/12/26/install-google-dialer
Since I've no root can only hope that 4.4.3 update will sort ( that's if we get it).

Nitro used the nexus 5 dialer on his earlier releases of Eclipse. I believe it requires more work than just a simple apk.
I used the file manager inside of safestrap to install the apk in /system/priv-app, then changed permissions with chmod 755. There is an app in the play store called QuickShortcutMaker that allows you to create a widget of any activity. This means that you don't have to use Nova launcher to launch the Google dialer.
You can see this thread. It may be help you..

One feature I really miss from my N5 is the google caller id where it will bring up a picture of the business you are calling. Is there any way I can get this on my unlocked/rooted stock rom so that it's the primary phone app?
Thanks!
There are many such apps in the play store, none of which even require rooting afaik.
Effectiveness depends on your location and the app's database but search "caller id" and you will find a couple. I live in the EU (coverage very flaky to outright wrong) so I can't give recommendations as none really worked for me.
Bump... Does anyone know how I can get google caller id like the one I had on my Nexus 5 running on my Oneplus One?
Would replacing all the dialer apks with the one from a nexus 5 work as long as I set the permissions correctly?
If any of you have read the recent headlines on XDA about how to enable RCS on the Google messages app, I recently did that as I'm on Cricket Wireless, (Unlocked Moto Z3 Play 64gb) which originally didn't support the chat features or RCS in the messages app, however after I followed the steps, it worked like a charm, however to my (pleasant) surprise, I looked in the Google dialer apps Settings today, and found the "Call Screening" option was now available... I thought it might be just a side effect of enabling RCS, so I had a few ppl call me, and to my surprise, Call Screening now FULLY works!
pretty cool
I don't see that option on mine ..
@bdizzle1686 please tell us how did you enable this feature ? Give us steps.

Actually, I didn't do any steps.. installed normal Google dialer from play store (beta version) , and it just works. Appeared in setting of phone app, chose voice, watched demo, and it works on every incoming call. Works on my new Moto G7 as well..
(Dropped and shattered the screen on my Z3 play for the THIRD TIME in 6 months)
The only thing that I've done that may have contributed to this working, is I've installed a few Google Pixel related apk's, (modded Pixel launcher, Pixel launcher Icons, all Pixel wallpaper ports, Pixel camera, Pixel Visual Core, Device Configuration - android.autoinstalls.config.google.nexus) etc.
As I stated before, this has now worked fully for me on both my Unlocked Moto Z³ Play, and my Unlocked Moto G7, both NOT rooted, NO magisk, NO unlocked bootloader, On cricket wireless as my carrier.. I'm thinking the Device Configuration apk (android.autoinstalls.config.google.nexus) is what may have helped in activating this on the Google Dialer BETA version..
Thanks.. ?
But this config APK didn't help in this pixel call screening...
Maybe it's somewhat restricted to US.

Yeah, that's definitely possible, as I live just about a half an hour drive north of Detroit, Michigan...
As you can see, like I originally said, I don't really think I did any specific steps to enable this, Google just started rolling the feature out to certain specific non-pixel devices...
Call screening just suddenly appeared and started working one day, on both my Z³ Play, and my G⁷...
