Just got me new-to-me TF700 this afternoon. Trying to root it.
Unlocking was easy (all manufacturers should do it this way).
Now trying to root.
I've downloaded (and copied to /sdcard0) CWM touch for KK (recovery-kk-touch-6046.img)
Press [pwr] +[vol-down] gets me to what appears to be a fastboot screen. I have 3 options "RCK", "Android", and "Wipe data".
None of these lets me run recovery on the CWM image.
I'd just go into ADB and run from there, but the tablet came without the stock USB cable (the one that plugs in the keyboard port).
Is there another way to do this - of am I doing the wrong thing anyway?
Not a major deal if I need to order a cable and wait.
Thanks!
PS: tablet is on stock 4.2.1. There are a lot of instructions that say, basically, select 'USB' from the fastboot screen. That's not appearing.

Without that cable, how do you connect it to the charger?

There are also instructions updated for the current bootloader that tell you that fastboot is already active in the bootloader menu.

Micro HDMI.
You could try if the recently released towelroot works for you until you get your cable.
It came with an aftermarket charger; charger and cable are a single piece. I'm not sure the separate chargers are available at all now.
I saw those instructions - and it looked like I was in fastboot. What I mostly wanted to do was install the CWM image. I think there's a way to do that as recovery, as well, but the img has to get packaged in a zip file with instructions and then named whatever recovery is looking for. Not something I'm going to be able to whack together.
Yeah, realized it was micro HDMI just as soon as I started looking at "tf700 cable". Duh! Removed it from my OP, didn't realize someone had already looked at it and was looking to save someone (you?) some typing. Didn't work.
Time to get a cable.
Found one of the OEM chargers. $55 + shipping. Not planning to buy.

If Towelroot works (it probably will since it does work on the TF701) and you get root, you can use the dd command in terminal to flash the custom recovery. But better do some reading on that! One little typo and you could have yourself a brick.
You cannot flash a custom recovery using the stock recovery however - or did I misunderstand?
You can get by without a USB cable if you can get it rooted, but what if something goes wrong? What if you cannot enter recovery and only fastboot is available?
I would not flash custom software without a working ADB and fastboot connection! And for those you need the USB cable. Get it - you'll regret it if you don't.

Oh, I got one. Just was itchin' to get a new ROM. Hoping KK's a bit speedier (it had ought to be) - and it's desperately slow now.
Towelroot, indeed, worked fine. Mixed feelings on that one. It working means basically any app that gets installed can get root. But I'm happy I got root to play with in the couple of days it took Newegg to get a cable to me

Good choice getting the cable.
Install SuperSU from the Play Store. That will allow you to control which apps get root.

Did that immediately. Paid for pro ages ago
Now trying to get fastboot via USB.
power off (or reset)
power & [vol dn]
stock JB so it goes right into fastboot (3 selectable icons, no "USB" icon)
connect USB
on win pc cmd line go to adb/fastboot directory
"fastboot devices" gets me... nothing.
Not sure how to get CWM installed without fastboot (?)
Trying to figure out if I maybe have bad win drivers. adb works (e.g. "adb shell" works fine) - not when in fastboot mode, of course.
Any ideas? Pointers to the right drivers (win 64)?
Thanks!

Windows is infamous for driver problems.....
Connect the tab in fastboot and open device manager. Near the top you should have an entry for Android device, bootloader mode or something similar, and probably a yellow ! next to it.
Right click it and choose "update driver", let Windows search for it.
If you're lucky it'll install the driver by itself.

Win 7 Pro / 64.
If you don't mind, I'm going to re-ask this in the general forum - if it's like other forums, when the question changes tack, often people who might know the exact answer never read it because the title was about the original question.
I put it here
BTW, Got CROMBi-KK on there without fastboot (so without a USB cable ) as follows
towelroot - got root
installed supersu, loaded binaries, uninstalled towelroot
goo.im - open bootloader - installed TWRP
installed CROMBi-KK by copying zip to sdcard0, then install from TWRP.
Even without booting / using a fast external SD card, it's perceptibly faster than the stock JB ROM. I did kind'a like the way the stock JB screen was laid out to make it easy to use while attached to a keyboard (controls at L & R bottom corners where you can easily poke 'em with a thumb.) Ah, well.
Ah yes - forgot about Goo. For quite a while it didn't support flashing TWRP anymore, but it's back.
There's also TWRP Manager (which I haven't tried yet) and Flashify which I really like.
It does make flashing a recovery easier, but.....
Call me old-fashioned, but all of those require Android to run. What if you're stuck in a bootloop and need to flash a recovery, clear partitions in fastboot etc? To get drivers working when the tablet is already compromised can be a challenge - to say the least.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see more and more users here who went your route, never got ADB and fastboot going and find themselves stuck when Android does not boot....
That said, I'm glad you can experience KK goodness now and I'll head over to your new thread - maybe I have another idea

My Motorola Xoom is stuck in an BootLoop
It is an European Xoom.
It had 3.1 (OTA).
I unlocked the bootloader, with succes.
Using this guide: http://imransarwar.com/index.php/how-to-unlock-and-re-lock-motorola-xoom-for-flashing/
Then I used this guide:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1078019
After catch-the-boot, I came in the ClockWorkMod Recovery, as expected.
But the clicking on 'Install zip from SD card' showed the contents of the internal storage, not the physical SD.
So I rebooted the device, and have put the Zip-file on the internal Storage.
I went into recovery-again, i selected the zip-file.
It says 'Done '.
I Click on Reboot Device Now.
*BOOT LOOP*
I can still use:
adb reboot
And when i have done 'adb reboot', i can also reach fastboot.
(there is still hope?)
My Assumptions:
As the recovery 'install zip from sd' uses the internal storage,
it has no use to try putting something on the physical sd-card.
Is there a way to get something (read: some fix zip-file) on the internal storage, using nothing but ADB and Fastboot?
like adb push, would that work? if that would work, what do i have to push?
Any help is appreciated !
EDIT:
Found possible solution.
I'll think I should try this:

It will get the device back to stock (I hope).
EDIT2:
Ok.. I tried the guide above.
My Device hangs on the Dual Core-screen.
Just found out that the File i have downloaded for the above guide is not the right version for my European Xoom (Wifi).
It was for 3G-Xoom-devices.
Downloading the right version now..
I Hope that i can come into Fastboot again, so i can flash the correct version.
EDIT3:
The device is still hanging on the Dual-Core-Screen,
it does not respond to anything, no buttons, no adb, no fastboot...
I guess i have to wait till the battery is empty, (this might take a while)
then turn it on while holding the volume down button to try to get into fastboot
If I cannot get into fastboot, my device is bricked I guess.

It's not bricked. It's really hard (but not impossible) to brick a Xoom. They are hardy beasts.
I do wish you hadn't tried the revert/relock thing. You just made it worse as you tried to flash a 3G image on a WiFi only device.
But don't worry, it is possible to come back from this.
Just so you know, your first mistake was using old guides (though filled with good info, but files are not necessarity right) and mixing the sources. There are much newer guides in the Development section (page 1) for non-US Xoom, and I think people have better result when they stick with one source (in this case xda Xoom forum).
Second mistake is that you used the wrong recovery image...you used the v4.0.0.4 from RomManager, which is not compatible with the external micro sd card. You need the v3.2.0.0 R4c (Tiamat version). That's still the best most current version for the Xoom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979
If you had not gotten impatient and tried to revert/relock, you could have just flashed the proper recovery image and you would be good to go.
Good luck!
You seem to know your way around adb and fastboot so I'm sure you will be able to recover. Find the proper stock images for your Euro WiFi Xoom and flash them, download and flash the correct recovery image and you can take it from there.
It works again !
I Fixed it it works again
( I Do not have Root, but i'm glad its not bricked)
My device was hanging on the Dual-core screen.
So I waited till the battery was empty.
I connected the charger and usb cable, powered it on while holding volume-down.
Guess what, I came into fastboot
I have downloaded the correct images from the motodev-website.
Just followed the instructions (on the motodev site) and was good to go.
All what was left was updating to 3.1. That also worked fine.
I will be more carefull next time I try to Root an Android device, and make sure the guide is not for a different device. I have learned from my mistake.

Excellent! So glad to hear it. You have skills so I'm sure you will be coool from now on.
just an update
This is an old thread so I'm putting this here for google searchers, like me.
I had the same problem but here's what extra I found/noticed
(1) To restart the xoom when it's in this state hit power button and volume up
(2) You can see that the tablet is still responsive if you hit volume down after 2 seconds as you'll get some options
(3) For me it wouldn't work if I used the motorola cable (yes, the real one) in the front pc usb ports. I had to use the usb 3 ports at the back of my pc. Yes, it's that picky! The difference was when I used fastboot to install the system image. It took 3 minutes then gave up, stuck the cable in the back of the pc instead and it took about 10 seconds and worked first go!
(4) The pc didn't recognise the xoom and adb didn't work, i.e. it said no device attached. However fastboot did recognise it
After point (4) I realised it wasn't bricked and could move forward
thanks to the other posters here for making me realise there was hope

Sounds like you're in official 4.2 bootloader, which apparently has no USB icon. When you hit RCK on official loader, if you don't have an official rom loaded somewhere, you'd end up with an android on its belly. Out of caution you should verify with an "elder", or elderly for that matter, if there's a way to ascertain, from where you are, what bootloader you presently have.
On my part, I'd say if you hold down volume - and power, and the tab gets into fastboot mode automatically, this indicates official bootloader 4.2. Then you can use ADB to push or flash TWRP recovery, I think. When in Windows with ADB drivers installed, check when you connect your tab to your PC to ensure it shows up as "fastboot device." And you need to flash the correct version (4.2.1). Read this thread first. Good luck.

Forgot to include the fact that the tab has not been unlocked or rooted.
The tab doesn't go into fastboot. My windows laptop recognizes it as a media mtp device and wants to synch with it every time I plug it in, but neither fastboot or adb see it.

What happens when you follow the directions here by Tobdaryl (reverting back to official 104220 where 4.2 is encrypted)? Short of returning the MB, ain't much you can do hanging on to it, right? I've done this with my tab on official 4.2, and it went back to official 104220 without problems. Must warn you though, it took quite a few minutes and at times, looked as if it's frozen. Just leave it on till it says it's done. Patience counts.
New that would get attention. Is there anyone out there that is dedicated to helping for a lil cabbage? I have this tf101 transformer that i cant seem to get rooted. Why is it so gosh dern hard to root one? I have followed all methods and tryed diff methods. The emulator runs but root is still not acheived. I have not bricked it. Its running ics. Ive rooted phones and tablets since the evo 4g..... this garbage a$$ tablet is without a doubt one of the worst i have ever had the displeasure of owning. Nexus 7,,,samsung note 1,,,note 2,,,,,,note 10.1,,,,,htc first,,,,evo 4g,,,,blackberry tour....AND NONE HAVE EVER BEEN THIS HARD TO ROOT. I wont buy another asus anything.
So,if som1 could explain what im doing wrong thatwould be great...also 20 buck in the paypal acct.....if you can think of it. Ive done it. Next is taking it apart to see what makes it tick
First thing - Does your tablet get seen by your PC in either APX or ADB mode? And did you update the driver using the Naked Drivers?
Last time I rooted I used Wolf's Method 3. Here is what I did:
Plugged in my tablet to my PC via USB (win 7 PC).
After the device was detected, I went to Settings - Developer Options - Debugging (tick the box).
It should install new hardware and show 2 devices, an MTP and an ADB device.
Update the driver in the Device Manager on the windows machine to the Naked Drivers
Once that is updated, I downloaded ADB from the Android SDK. You really only need three files, available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998650
Unzip these files to a folder called c:\adb
Open a command prompt and type the following:
Code:
c:
cd c:\adb
adb devices
It should show a device connected. It may error out when restarting the daemon, but keep trying and see if it can find your tablet.
If you cannot get the ADB driver installed or updated, my guess is that you have a bad USB cable. Yes, it IS possible to have a bad cable for data transfer that STILL charges your tablet. I have even had that happen to me.
If you got this far, then here is what to do next:
Download your favorite recovery. I strongly recommend TWRP. The latest official release is here: http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/tf101/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.2.3-tf101.blob
Save this at c:\adb\TWRP.blob. You can use a different recovery method if you have the blob file (such as CWM) but TWRP is far superior unless you are looking to install Android Revolution HD.
Next, run the following commands (from Wolf's Exploit, Method 3)
Code:
adb push TWRP.blob /sdcard/
adb shell
mv /data/local/tmp /data/local/tmp.bak
ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /data/local/tmp
adb reboot
exit
It will reboot. Once you see the ASUS loading screen, you can continue:
Code:
adb shell
dd if=/sdcard/TWRP.blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
Wait until you see it succesfully transfer data.
Then:
Code:
adb reboot
exit
Once it reboots, you should see a progress bar at the ASUS screen. Once this completes you will have TWRP (or some other custom recovery installed)
Now you can install your favorite SuperUser app.
Download a zip flashable SuperUser
ChainsDD SuperUser: http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip
ClockWorkMod SuperUser: http://download.clockworkmod.com/superuser/superuser.zip
Chainfire SuperSU: http://download.chainfire.eu/333/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.34.zip
I like the CWM SuperUser at the moment, but all three will work.
Put these where you can see them from the recovery you flashed. If using TWRP, it needs to be in the /sdcard/ directory or on the microSD card.
Next, reboot to recovery. Hold VOL DOWN and POWER for 12-15 seconds until you see some white text in the upper left of the screen. Release both buttons and tap VOL UP to enter RCK (Recovery).
Once in recovery, tap Install and choose the SuperUser.zip file to install. Once installed, you are rooted.
Another time I rooted, I used EasyFlasher and here is the thread on my rooting guide for that if you are interested: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...nt/31927-frederucos-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
Once again, if you cannot get your tablet detected by ADB or APX, chances are it is a bad USB cable.

If you've 'tried everything', then it's likely Bad drivers or a bad USB cable, I'll assume you've tried my tool, the idcrisis tool, Easyflasher and wolf's method (Described by Fred) above.
If you'd like me to remote desktop you with Teamviewer to make sure your drivers are good I can do that, but if you've really tried everything then it's likely a bad cable.
ToD
To test the cable, simply transfer a file through USB with a known md5 signature, then verify it again after it's been transferred. You can use something like AFV to check the md5 once on the device. The bigger the file the better; the more chances it has to fail.

Hey guys, first time on here.
I've been trying to root my unlocked Asus tf700 running JB 4.2.1 for days and have been following all the xda guides with no luck.
I've tried to flash CMW on it through fastboot to no avail. Everything I see says, once you get into the bootloader or whatever, to press Vol Down until you get to the USB icon and then press volume up but there isn't any USB icon. Right when I get into the bootloader, after I hold Vol Down and Pwr, the first thing it reads on the top left corner of the screen is "Key driver missing." But I have downloaded the drivers from the asus website. Any suggestions about why this is happening? I also tried just using Motochopper (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763) but when it ran it said failure. I booted it up and I had SuperSU but I tried to open it and it said "no SU binary found! This is a problem!". Any suggestions on how to root this and flash a recovery on it would be greatly appreciated, because none of the other forums guides seem to work? help out a noob!

If your device is unlocked you don’t need MotoChopper for rooting, just flash TWRP Recovery and it will ask you if you want to root your device (in case it detect that root is missing).
For the "Key driver missing" error, just ignore it, Fastboot will work just fine as long as you are sure that the drivers are installed just fine.

For the "Key driver missing" error, just ignore it, Fastboot will work just fine as long as you are sure that the drivers are installed just fine.

Thanks, but I'm still confused. I thought you needed GooManager to install TWRP, and GooManager won't work unless you have a rooted device.

Goo Manager is not mandatory, you can still flash the TWRP via fastboot. You can find more info on the TWRP website.
Sounds like a driver issue to me. If you can't fastboot cwm or use motochopper something is up.
Could also be your usb connection. Try another cable or port or another pc.

yeah ive tried two differ pcs already so I dont think its that. It definitely could be the drivers. Ive tried to install them from the asus site a bunch of times though so idk whats up.

If you have recently updated your firmware to xxxx.10, you will "not" be able to run motochopper (there is nothing wrong with your PC or cables), Ausus closed the Moto root opening with the latest firmware. However, you can still root following the TWRP instructions.....as indicated above.
just some more info
So i tried re installing the drivers one more time to my PC, and everything went okay, so I'm sure it can't be the drivers, although the error still comes up. And just to tell you guys, when moto chopper runs it says, "waiting for device, daemon not running, starting it now on port 5057, daemon started successfully." Don't know if that helps at all to what the problem is, but just some more info. Now I'll try flashing twrp and rooting that way.
Nothing works at all

So I went to the TWRP website to try and install twrp 2.6.0. The three options on how to do this were:
1. Via GooManager - which I can't do because my device isn't rooted.
2. Through fastboot (it says to click on the usb icon) - there isn't any usb icon.
3. The terminal method.
I just tried the terminal method, and that didn't work either because when I typed in what it said I was supposed to type in, it said "permission denied."
So yeah.

I vaguely remember running Motochopper & getting the same message.....it you are on .8 or earlier firmware (in 4.2.1), Motochopper should run.
I think I turned off my tablet, left it connected to PC & then ran motochopper & tablet self booted.....lots of ABD's out of date messages, but Moto worked it's way through them and rooted my device.
I have read of problems with Win 7 (my OS) & Motochopper, but none if used with XP.
Good luck, & Let us know how t goes

Recent bootloaders do not have a USB icon because they activate fastboot already while the boot menu is visible (read the tiny text in the top left corner).

I tried what you said. The tablet didn't self-boot when I ran Motochopper again. It just stayed powered off. I turned it on, and the exact same thing happened. except there was another error in motochopper this time. it said "FAILURE ALREADY EXISTS." any other suggestions?

Okay that's what I thought. So if I do that second method on twrp, I guess I should just skip when it says to press the USB icon because fast boot is already running??

Hi all
I've had my Tf700 for a long time now. I've had it unlocked and rooted and had CROMBi before trying OMNIRom and then finally moved to KatKiss7.1 last year. All was well until today when, having enabled screen rotation, the background went a strange looking pink colour and would flicker back and forth to black. Then the WiFi started to misbehave so I rebooted it. But instead of rebooting, it just went into a bootloop.
I used power + VolumeDown to access the recovery mode and tried to get to TWRP (2.8.7.4) via the RCK option but without any luck. At that stage, all it was doing was resuming the loop. I tried booting into Android but got the same result. I tried for TWRP a few times and it always failed.
My next move was the Wipe Data option. Turned out to be a bad one. I hadn't done anything with the device in so long that I forgot about the "don't use the Wipe Data" instruction and I didn't read up before doing anything else. The device rebooted itself and then appeared to be going into TWRP - I could see the logo coming up - but my hope was short-lived as the device then proceeded to go into a bootloop where it displays the TWRP splash screen, but then reboots.
About the only thing I seem to be able to do is access APX, but I didn't know about APX or NVFlash until today when I started trying to read everything to do with anything that might help.
I run Linux on my PCs and have installed ADB so that I can try to use fastboot or adb. Neither seem to work in that nothing shows up when issuing either "fastboot devices" or "adb devices". But on a more basic level, nothing shows up in lsusb. The mouse is listed, as is my card-reader, but the TF700 isn't. The thing is, I haven't connected the device to a PC in a long time and the last time, it was windows, so I can't say for sure that the PC is definitely seeing it or not.
And so to my questions:
1) Should the TF700 show up in Linux using the lsusb command when connected via the cable. (maybe I need a new cable? maybe I need Windows )
2) If I got a new cable, is it likely that I'd be able to push a recovery image back to the device to allow me to start to rebuild?
3) When APX is available, is it possible to transplant someone elses NVFlash backups, or whatever is just enough to get it running again so that I can re-install recovery and maybe reload an earlier TWRP backup?
(I've seen instructions for the TF201, but can't see anything for the TF700)
Any help would be really appreciated.
With thanks,
Scouser27
I don't like the sound of this. This "background went a strange looking pink colour and would flicker back and forth to black" business makes me suspect a hardware failure. Maybe something got fried on the board - don't know.

Yes, it should, something like this:
Code:
...
Bus 003 Device 009: ID 0bda:57af Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 003 Device 016: ID 0b05:4d01 ASUSTek Computer, Inc. Transformer Prime TF201 (debug mode)
Windows is not going to help you. If it doesn't connect in Linux it definitely won't in Windows....

Not unless you get a connection in either fastboot or adb

No, nvflash files are device specific
If you cannot get it to boot into fastboot or get an adb connection - however briefly - it is a brick.
Install Hardinfo in Linux - it is very similar to Windows Device Manager - and open the USB page. Then reboot into TWRP. If you are lucky you may get a few seconds before TWRP loops where the PC has an adb connection and sees the tablet. If that works, follow this: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...my-transformer-tf700-boots-only-recovery.html
Still a tiny chance but better than nothing.
If bootit.ko kicks it into the bootloader and you get fastboot you can reflash the recovery, format data in fastboot and all that good stuff.
But my guess is: No dice
Try it anyway - good practice.
I still have a couple of TF700 lying around, one with a so so screen. If you want it, you can have it for the cost of shipping. You can either swap the screens or m-boards...
PM me if you want to go that route.
Good luck
Update
Thought I'd post something in case it's useful to anyone having similar trouble to what I described. This applies to my instance of TWRP booting in a loop and never exiting until the battery was flat.
Ensure your cable is working correctly.
If it's not, you won't see anything on your pc. (I use linux and nothing was showing up in lsusb or dmesg)
If this is the case, borrow a cable if you can or invest in one. I did - best 5 Euro ever.
Get the bootit.ko file that's mentioned in a few places such as here.
While you're getting that file, read the instructions there a few times and also have a look at the details over at this page (same one @berndblb links above)
Connect your tablet and boot it. As soon as you see the TWRP logo, it's time to try to run commands.
If you use linux, you can issue all commands at once like this:
Code:
sudo adb devices; sudo adb push bootit.ko / ; sudo adb shell insmod bootit.ko
Note the "/" after "push bootit.ko" - that's not a typo. If you leave it out, it won't work.
I don't know if sudo was strictly needed, but I wanted it to work and it didn't cause any trouble.
I haven't used Windows in a long time so I don't remember if you can do the same, but you could put the various adb commands into a batch file and run that. Don't forget to drop the sudo.
If it has worked, the tablet will reboot. You should now be able to get back to the bootloader.
Follow the fastboot erase instructions at this thread.
I found it useful to write the commands as
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 erase boot
The last version of TWRP that I was using was KANG TWRP
I downloaded that, extracted the blob file and flashed it:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery boot.blob
I used that because I wanted to install TimDuru's KatKiss 7, but you could presumably install whatever Recovery you wanted and proceed as normal.
And that's it. I flashed KatKiss7 and SU and all was well again:laugh:
Big thanks go to @berndblb for his help on this - If, like me, you didn't read his posts before, you really need to read them now. And maybe, just maybe, you'll be able to recover.
Thanks to all other contributors whose post's I've linked or whose work contributes to this solution - you've all just saved me having to buy a new tablet. Nice one!:victory:
