no, you do not need root. but you do need to unlock your bootloader to flash cwm recovery via fastboot. then you can relock your bootloader if you want
How do I Do all that?

there are many threads here that explain how to unlock the bootloader and flash the recovery, heres one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
just follow the steps to unlock the bootloader and flash the recovery.
rooting doesn't even give u the ability to install CWM Recovery. Unlocking the boot loader is what u need. I think u will need to install JDK and SDK. Then u will be able to use ADB to use commands to unlock boot loader. That sounds complicated but its not that bad. Just look in General section where all the guides r and start reading
What could happen if I didn't unlock my bootloader and I install a CM10 non-kexec?

You would be in a boot loop. This is because CM10 requires a custom kernel, and if you didn't have kexec you'd have no kernel to use to boot it up.

its that fixable? because I already unlock my bootloader with EZ-unlock app but I'm not sure 100% if I unlock it
Thanks

Even with the bootloader unlocked, you can still use kexec if you want. As far as checking if the bootloader is unlocked, when you reboot the phone there should no longer be a pad lock of any kind.
I was thinking to flash a cm10 no-kexec with twrp2.2 recovery it's a good idea?

Okay, so I recently noticed that there was an icon that said "Custom" and it was an unlocked lock on my start up. And, when I try to do an OTA update, it fails. I even flashed the stock recovery. And, when I try to install custom ROM's, it says something like "Error 7, installation aborted."
Did you unlock your bootloader yet?

Well i'm almost 100% sure that all roms now require an unlocked bootloader, so by unlocking it and flashing a custom recovery you should be able to flash roms and it'll make the custom icon go away as well.

If your already rooted just download EZ Unlock from the market and it'll do it with the press of a button I advise flashing a custom recovery first though.

Okay, I flashed CWM Touch and then did the unlock. Will this allow me to do the OTA update?

U should flash the OTA from 1 of the "OTA threads" here. It's safer & u won't lose root.

Okay, thanks. Or would it be smarter to just install CM10 from ROM Manager?

that would be safe general rule now, do all your backing up, flashing, etc, by manually booting into recovery first, that's the only sure fire way to make sure it gets flashed on okay. I don't even keep rom manager on my phone anymore and i used to use it religiously on previous phones.

Don't you need TriangleAway to get rid of the lock icon?

Unlocking the boot loader should kill it.
I'm going crazy trying to install and boot a custom rom. I rooted , unlocked and installed cwm. I used ez unlock and recovery. I can install a rom but it boots to an unauthorized device screen. I then have to go through the soft brick procedure. What am I doing wrong?

More than likely your boot loader is still locked.
Which version of EZ Unlock did you use? You should unlock using version 1.2 from the Rootzwiki thread.

Thanks everyone. I will give it a shot.
I'm currently rooted and have a locked boot loader. I used goo to install twrp however, it doesn't boot to recovery. From the off state or from the phone. When entering the boot to mode it doesn't boot to recovery, it goes to system. So, my question is, is the unlocked bootloader needed?

Yes, you need an unlocked bootloader to flash TWRP.
