I understand root sorry I didn't make that clear. However I have three question. #1 Do I root before I get a recovery?#2 Do need a computer to root?

You only posed two..
1. No. You need to unlock the bootloader first, from there you can install a custom recovery.
2. Highly recommended. There are tools nowadays that simplifies the process, but nothing works as best as doing it manually. You'll get to learn more, understand how your phone works, and it's much easier overall for the people at this forum to help you if you encounter a problem, if you understand the terms we use and how things are done.

Did you unlock using adb?
Then you should be on your way to rooting. Remember to flash a custom recovery first, that's very important.

You can't unlock the bootloader using adb. It needs to be unlocked when the phone is in fastboot mode using a fastboot command.

If you have already unlocked the bootloader, then download a recovery, extract the recovery.img file and then flash it via fastboot. All these steps can be accessed by following the thread linked in my signature.

Where I am confused is when I download the recovery in this case twrp 2.7.1.1 and the superSU and put them in the android platform folder, do I then turn my phone off and fastboot mode and unzip the superSU in the platform folder?

I didn't tell him to unlock using adb did I? Merely pointing out to do it manually, he must have had to download adb to his computer, given that he's not even sure how he unlocked his bootloader.

Will you please read the thread named "[GUIDE] Nexus 5 - How to Unlock Bootloader, Install Custom Recovery and Root" which is linked in my signature. Read it thoroughly and then post questions. Please get your basics cleared first.
Put the twrp img file in platform tools folder and then open a cmd window from there to run fastboot commands. Yes, you need to go into fastboot mode to run fastboot commands.

Just for the sake of accuracy and to be pedantic, fastboot and adb are completely different. fastboot.exe and adb.exe do completely different things. All thats needed unlock the bootloader is fastboot.exe and USB drivers. This can all be done without downloading adb.exe

Turn your phone off, boot into bootloader, then fastboot the recovery image.
Once done, reboot into your new custom recovery, use adb to push the superSU zip to your phone (do not unzip it, leave it as it is), use your custom recovery to locate to the zip, then install it.

Anyone would interpret this as if your accepting that the bootloader is unlocked with adb. Which isn't correct. In any case, if that's not what you meant, my bad!

I am doing what you are telling me in your thread. when I open the command window and input the first code it say "the system cannot find the path specified" that the problem / what has been done fore this to say that?

You get that error because the twrp file which you're trying to flash isn't in the platform tools folder.
Here are some things you need to check:
1. Have you navigated correctly to the twrp file path in fastboot?
2. Is the twrp file named correctly? if it's recovery.img then the command would be fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3. Make sure you have file extensions seen in windows explorer so that you can confirm the file extension.

I have tried for the better part of a day to root my i9020A (Android 2.3.4, KD1, GRj22).
Has anyone successfully gained root?

Is your bootloader unlocked, if so then you have to flash clockwork recovery, by using fastboot mode through sdk android software, through your computure. You can get the recovery file and root file in general forum. In the general forum, there is a guide there as well and you can also go to youtube as well.
It's fairly simple - this applies to all of the versions of the Nexus S:
Boot into bootloader - fastboot oem unlock (this wipes)
Flash custom recovers
Mount /system
flash SU binary through recovery
On reboot the recovery will be overwritten with stock. To prevent this rename / delete /etc/install-recovery.sh

My bootloader is locked.
I cannot get my device to recognize the USB drivers.
I tried both Android SDK & Samsung USB Mobile drivers
I had to use the junefabrics driver. Shabby has a one click that does most of it and provides the adb driver

I was able to unlock my bootloader (used pdanet).
If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.

I just recently rooted my HTC One X and and now attempting to unlock the bootloader using HTC Dev. I've gotten my folder set up with all of the correct files (ADB and such) as well as gotten Android SDK installed. So far I've gotten into my command prompt and navigated to my file called "fastboot" that contains all of my adb files. I'm stuck at the fastboot unlock token stage. Whenever I enter that I get this error-
C:\fastboot>fastboot oem get_identifier_token
'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I've played around with it and tried different things, but still get this error. I am in bootloader/fastboot mode so that isn't the problem.

Thank you so much! I got that done, unlocked the bootloader, and installed TWRP recovery. Now before I install CleanROM do I have to flash the boot.img using "fastboot flash boot boot.img" or am I good to just flash the whole .zip file through recovery?

A couple different threads now I'm 99.9 percent sure you isn't have to flash the boot img. U can post in the q and a section if you really must you'll get a straight answer there
First you do have adb files installed? If you do make sure you install the drivers. Just install HTC Sync and make sure that it's not running in the task bar. Then try again. I'm almost sure that the drivers are missing in this case.

Lol, thanks. If you read above you can see that I solved that. What I'm needing to know now is if I have to flash a boot.img before I flash a ROM, or if I can just download the .zip and flash it from recovery.

Sorry I'm just incredibly lazy and forget to read sometimes , well since you never took the 2.20 RUU/OTA you just have to run the zip unless the instructions for the rom specificly says to flash the boot.img.

I know everyone hates people who post without searching the forums first, but I did and I am still very lost on what all I need to do to root my device and get going flashing ROMs with the new 2.20 Root Method.
I have used this thread to get me started (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1684382&highlight=root+guide) and I have already downloaded Android SDK from google + Platform-tools + Google USB Driver but I don't want to get going on root because in the instructions from 2.20 Root it states:

After unlocking the bootloader, you can flash a custom recovery partition via fastboot, boot into recovery mode, and use a recovery ADB shell or install from an update.zip to install Superuser and su (I do not provide support for custom recoveries, but this is a straightforward process that other people can help with).

I second this request. I feel like there are loads of helpful threads but after searching for a long time I don't see anything that leads someone new to Android rooting from stock 2.2 to having something like CM10 on their device. All of the write-ups I've found assume more experience than I have. Is there a general guide somewhere that I'm missing? Maybe something that explains rooting, backing up, flashing, etc. from start to finish where we can replace "this is where you root your device" with the new rooting method? I'm assuming it's out there but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

You don't need to "generate" anything, not sure where you got that terminology from. Just install Goomanager from the Play Store and use that to install TWRP recovery.

In plain terms a superuser = a root user. But when discussed here, it usually references the app that manages what other apps have root access.
Superuser is required to perform root functions.

They are many simple tutorials for rooting but do not know why you guys having hard time. Ok here is
1) You got Android SDK from google + Platform-tools + Google USB Driver -
2) Only for windows - Download htc sync ( It will install necessary htc drivers) - Link
3) Just to check if htc drivers installed properly , open "C:\android-sdk\platform-tools" ( Or folder where adb and fastboot exists) then "Press shift + right click and select "Open command window here" ( open command prompt and cd "folder where adb and fastboot exists).
4) In command window type " adb devices" and see output - If you get output then htc drivers installed properly.
You can skip step 3 and step 4 - These steps are only for verification
5) Goto [ROOT] HTC One X AT&T 2.20 Firmware - X-Factor root exploit and follow the instructions there.
6) Once you successfully root your device using above exploit then goto - [How To] Flash Custom recovery and ROMS after 2.20 root complete the steps to flash custom recovery and if you want to flash ROMS
7) To unlock BOOT LOADER use this link - [INDEX] AT&T/ROGERS One X Resources Compilation Roll-Up , follow the instructions under " BOOTLOADER UNLOCK, SUPER CID, AND S-OFF"
You can also goto this link - [ROOT][2.20] One XL Bootloader unlock & Root guide By XsMagical - Very nice tutorial, if you find above links difficult to follow
Note* : During exploit or flashing recovery they talk about using fastboot commands, In order to execute them you need goto C:\android-sdk\platform-tools" ( Or folder where adb and fastboot exists) then "Press shift + right click and select "Open command window here" ( open command prompt and cd "folder where adb and fastboot exists) and then execute the commands ..

Maybe it should be made into a stickie in Q&A. I can surely handle step 1 but maybe that could be explained (or at least a link added to an appropriate thread).
If all this is out there somewhere already then I certainly didn't know where to find it. I appreciate your help.

Thank you all for helping gather some resources for me that I know are up to date etc. - Thankfully I do know a few unix commands so that I can navigate the command prompt aspects...I'm sure these threads get annoying so thank you very much for getting a new-to-root user up and running. I'll try this all later this evening and throw an update to let you all know how it goes -- hopefully no "bricked my phone" thread in the future
Excellent I have successfully unlocked my bootloader and achieved perm-root! Now on to flashing roms and I have some questions:
1) I have read GuyIncognito's instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952076) on Flashing ROMs and how to go about doing that and i fully understand the process but I want to confirm (Yes I Have TWRP recovery installed and running) I only need to extract the boot.img out of the winRAR file of the ROM that I downloaded? (CM10 seems to be popular so I'm starting with that as my first ROM) There are so many other files in the package and I'm wondering why do you only need the boot.img file to be present with your adb and fastboot files from the google dev SDK -- the boot.img is only 5 MB and I can hardly believe that it constitutes the whole OS?
2) How do I go about installing gapps after I have flashed my ROM? I have downloaded Gapps so I have the file...do I place it in my SD Card and then enter recovery to install it? or Do have to use adb to flash it
Edit: I also have Superuser app on my stock ROM right now

Boot.img is technically just the kernel, it's the heart of the OS you are installing. Once extracted, rezip rom. Flash boot.img first using fastboot command prompt. Then flash the Rom itself that you rezipped through twrp
You can easily just flash gapps through twrp.

Thanks for the reply, the community on XDA kicks a$$, doing some additional reading just plz tell me if I understand this correctly...
1) Copy CM10 zip and Gapps zip into phone storage
2) Follow GuyIncognito's instructions on flashing boot.img
3) Boot into recovery AFTER Flashing boot.img
4) Select "Install" in TWRP
5) Install CM10 zip First
6) Install Gapps zip next
7) Reboot
8) profit?

2) How do I go about installing gapps after I have flashed my ROM? I have downloaded Gapps so I have the file...do I place it in my SD Card and then enter recovery to install it? or Do have to use adb to flash it
Edit: I also have Superuser app on my stock ROM right now

follow his instructions and you'll be fine
flash the boot.img in flashboot, reboot in recovery, flash your nameofrom.zip, flash your gapps pkg just like the rom (on your sd card), enjoy...

yes that;s correct you may wanna backup your sd card 1st as well and do a full wipe before flashing the rom.
Just in case your not familiar with fastboot, the command is fastboot flash boot boot.img

By Flash do you mean using TWRP recovery "install" feature and selecting the CM10.zip I have in my SD Card, and gapps? Just making sure I dont have to do it via command prompt cuz then I may have to do some additional reading

yes install. you dont need to do it from command prompt, additional reading is always good

Alright Looks like I successfully flashed CM10! I flashed gapps with it at the same time but I have run into a problem -- It keeps telling me that all these gapps processes have failed and I have no access to a keyboard! Do I have to reflash gapps?
Hmm ok I think I messed up here....
My phone was essentially non-functional with CM10 -- Nothing worked and it took me a while to navigate to enable USB Debugging on the given mod. One I enabled USB Debugging in CM10 I ran the following:
adb reboot recovery
Once I was in recovery, I Restored a backup of my device that I made BEFORE I obtained permanent root via the toolkit as it was recommended during this time to make a recovery.
Recovery worked successfully, now after reboot it hangs on the HTC screen and then goes black, then reboots again, and again, and again...
I haven't been able to use the volume down + power button to even get back into the bootloader.....hopefully I am not screwed here...Any suggestions?

Yes that would make sense, but the problem is A) How do I access that backup's .img file? B) How can I enter bootloader again? It won't let me using Power+Vol Down, no matter how long I hold it for --- unless I need to hold it longer?
You have to hold it till the buttons flash and goes black... Hold for about 2-3 more seconds and release the power button, but keep the volume down held until you get to a white hboot screen. (it'll have three skating droids)

Ok got it, did a factory reset then re-flashed CM10 boot.img...Flashed CM10 BY ITSELF this time, without doing gapps at the same time, rebooted into recovery after CM10 rolled up, then flashed gapps alone, everything is working smoothly! Now, time to restore my apps

Some back story. My N5 was stock/rooted, with stock recovery. I had installed the beta Xposed framework, using this post as a guide. Following the install, during the reboot, my phone never restarted. Since then it has not been able to turn on.
Things I have tried:
I have done method 1 & 2 of this guide
I am able to lock and unlock the bootloader, it is currently locked.
I have tried the command fastboot -w
I am unable to perform a factory reset, it hangs at /data
If there is any ideas as to what I should do next, please don't hesitate to let me know.
If I am able to get the Tamper Flag reset, then my plan is to look into the RMA option.
Also, I have been following this thread for info.

So earlier when i did this, the phone would freeze. Now it went through with it, and is now showing the animated android images, with a moving bar at the bottom. It has been there for about 4 minutes now.

it sounds like your phone is not dead however. please follow the return to stock thread in the general forum and you should be ok.

I have followed it already. The images on the first post are my result.
It is showing as unlocked at the booloader and on fastboot oem device-info.
follow the 2nd post, not the 2nd method in this thread and tell us the results.

Same thing as before. All of the erase commands get processed, but when it gets the the system.img it fails to write it.
I think you've done her in. Can you get into recovery? You might be able to push the tamper zip and then run it in recovery.

I am able to access recovery. This is exactly what I am trying to do at the moment, but now I cannot adb sideload the zip. For some reason the N5 is not being recognized by windows.

Use Galaxy Nexus drivers, and make sure you have updated the SDK for the latest adb.

No, I have had success getting the Nexus 5 working on ADB with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus drivers. Don't ask me why, but it works for me.

So an update, I am able to sideload the zip in recovery, however, during the install, it fails.

So this is just a shot in the dark, but the fastboot command screenshot you posted, you had the command "fastboot flash bootloader."
I haven't read the articles you're using, but is there a reason you're flashing a bootloader after unlocking it? Wouldn't that just lock the bootloader again?
I'd start fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery, and then adb sideload the .zip you are using once you're in recovery.

I am just following the guide for How to return to stock. But to answer your question, no it does not re-lock the bootloader.
Here is some additional information. When I perform a factory reset in recovery it freezes while formatting /data. And when flashing the stock images, I am able to flash everything successfully except for the system.img

Have you tried just dirty flashing stock / rooted thru recovery?
edit: or restoring a backup?

I run rooted unlocked Nexus 5 with CM11. I wanted to update the ROM but it failed - I read a bit and found out that it is due to old bootloader version. I would like to update it but I'm not a friend with ADB and stuff.... It would be great to use the most easiest way. I got OTA update notification but have no idea what it does - will it unroot the phone? will I lose CM11 ROM? Just trying to figure out what backups and steps shall I do to update my ROM. How shall I continue from here?

Attempting to take the OTA will fail.
Download the factory image and extract bootloader-hammerhead-hhz11k.img
Boot your device into bootloader:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-hammerhead-hhz11k.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
You have a custom recovery installed, right? Flash the bootloader zip via recovery. However, you need to get familiar with adb/fastboot as you're gonna need them if you ever find yourself in a tight situation to fix your device.
Open the "must read" thread linked in my signature and find the thread which has all the info about adb and fastboot.

Thank you! I get it about ADB, I had to solve one my problem in the past via ADB. Anyway, I just need to find the 4.4.4 bootloader in ZIP (or probalby .img will work too?) and flash it? That's it? Does it wipe my phone or something?
You just need to flash the IMG via fastboot, no wiping required!

Alright. One more thing. Is it possible to convert the IMG file I have into zip to be able to flash it in TWRP?
EDIT: I found that Nexus Toolbox for my 5 has the option to flash the bootloader image so I will try this variant.

You don't need to. Just boot into fastboot, connect to PC, fastboot flash bootloader name_of_file.img, reboot, done
it's easy you must become familiar with fastboot and add the second you aren't it will come back to haunt you
