This topic is pasted all over the net and it doesn't seem to be getting much attention, however I think it should be brought to a better light.
The idea is simple: Enable your Android Phone or Tablet to become a bluetooth reciever(to replace a headset or bluetooth speakers) and broadcast audio to the device and broadcast microphone from the device.
This could be used in several different applications:
1. Using an Android Tablet as a Car Stereo Interface
(Connect Phone to Tablet Via Bluetooth and use it as a hands free speakerphone, or aux out to your stereo)
2. Multiple Android Phones
(Have a business and personal phone? Answer all your calls from one.)
3. Phone or Tablet as Bluetooth Speaker/Mic
(Skype, PS3, Xbox 360, TV, Google Voice)
I would use several of these options on a daily basis, and would most definitely pay good money for an app like this.
So my questions are:
1. Is this possible?
2. If it is, how hard would it be?
3. If it isn't that hard, why hasn't someone done it yet!?
Bump if you want this too!
Just wanted to bump this because we need to put our heads together here and get this done. I need this capability for number 1 on your list of potential uses. I also would pay good money for an app that enabled this. Phones and tablet are rooted and ready to modify whatever is needed. Ii've bumped a couple other threads today as well.
I would also pay for this!
I have been looking for this for a while. I use an old LG Eve in my car and my Captivate's Wifi connection for GPS but I would love to have it work for calls and music too.
I would pay as well.
bumping this just to say that I'm going to research the rules and process for starting a bounty. obviously the smart people we need to work on this need motivation lol

Hi there,
just wanted to leave an incentive kind of post to say that I've also been looking for exactly the same thing.
My hunting on Google play just stopped after finding this post on XDA.
It's a kind of confirmation that there isn't a solution yet.
Since our rooted androids are more than capable of acting as a Bluetooth receiver, whether they may be based on new or older hardware, this seams like a very logical step in their lifecycle instead of getting forgotten in a drawer full of old and unused electronic waste.
Some doubts:
is a2dp required for this?
Is a2dp hardware related or simply a software feature?
Personally, I could live with a simple one way communication from a phone with mobile network (sender ) to the receiver. The used mic could still be the one on the sender side.
Wouldn't even need to have the receiver in a visible place as I would just connect a stereo cable from its headset output to an aux input on a hifi or a car stereo to hear music or acting as a hands-free system.
Hope this gets some real attention.
Cheers
In one year, nobody found a solution??
I can't beleive there is STILL no progress on this. Maybe I'll try asking a dev that has made similar apps the feasibility of this. There are so many practical uses for this that I cannot beleive no one has capitalized on it.
This would be a killer app if done right. Who here doesn't have an old phone laying around gathering dust? This could start off small; simply enabling the phone/tablet to be essentially a Bluetooth speaker, but then gain features and an interface using A2DP, which would evolve it into a killer way to make any car (with at least a tape deck) able to have full Bluetooth integration and control. I really hope someone can do this!
Bump
Bkb -> p -> PC (either wifi/blu/usb)
yeah so a spare bluetooth phone that connects between a keyboard and PC. Acting like a BT dongle. No way I'm spending 10 bucks for that. if an app...maybe a buck but would prefer free.
looking for this too. Wanting to turn this old phone into a bt audio receiver
Wow, endless searching and now this thread and still nothing :/ i need it for the first idea you listed, did you ever find something?
https://android.googlesource.com/pl.../java/android/bluetooth/BluetoothHeadset.java
Currently the Android Car Multimedia receives Bluetooth Stereo Audio from Phones (Andoird/Apple), how they do it?
Any news?
So many years and still nothing?
May be this is not the right way to do.
I know this is a crazy old subject but others have commented so I don't feel so bad.
I want to make my own android system for my car. I have everything I need for it (hardware/software-wise) except for this one thing.
A few years back there used to be an app called Tablet Talk, it's not exactly what we want but I'm still willing to settle for something like that. The way it works is phone->tablet->handsfree Bluetooth speaker. You could make and receive calls (including seeing the contact names/phone numbers on the tablet) from the tablet itself, then the audio/microphone goes to the handsfree device. Another added feature was when a call is happening the app stops all audio coming from the tablet until the call is done.
Like I said before, it's not perfect but at this point, I don't ever see it happening any other way. I found the app a few days ago, it doesn't exist on the app store anymore, unfortunately, I could get it to run. It just kept crashing.
If anyone knows of something then please let us know.
Years later, found just this thread: I want to do similar thing: Use a private phone (for my sake rooted with custom fw) as a hands-free bt device with an unrooted business phone (non-rooted and secure managed with company tool). I also don't want call forwarding or similar. Just do and answer calls, use phone book and call list via bluetooth like my car radio do for years.
Is there still no solution?

I have a Kenwood car stereo with Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP capabilities, however when I use Google Play Music to stream music, nothing shows up on the display. The music plays fine, but no track info I've tried apps like Power Amp and Rocket but they don't seem to manage either.
My friend's iPhone manages to stream track information over as well, so I know there's nothing wrong with the stereo unit's capabilities of actually doing it.
Does anyone know what's going on?
Each system will interact differently with individual bluetooth devices. Sorry I can't be of more help then that, just wanted to point out that it's mostly random what will work or not.

Isn't that what standards like AVRCP are meant to resolve?

Hey hey hey. I've got a Kia Optima 2013, and I had this issue once. Granted, i'm using the stock radio with bluetooth capabilities, what worked for me is resetting the entire radio console. I don't know if you can do that, but resetting the radio might help.
I experience the same thing in my 2011 F150 with Sync.

I'll try resetting but I somehow doubt that will work since I got the head unit after my Nexus 5
I know in Android 4.2 and earlier track info was never displayed but I haven't had any issues since they added AVRCP 1.3 support in 4.3. I know the iPhone supports AVRCP 1.4 but that shouldn't be needed to display metadata.
Are you on the stock ROM? I know I have had bluetooth issues with my car on some custom ROMs while it works flawlessly on stock.
Edit: You could also see if there is a firmware update available for your head unit?

It's possible; Mine didn't start doing it automatically, this first happened about 4 months after i got my car [new] and my nexus. Could just be bluetooth issues, but I think resetting it may do the trick; of course, you'll have to delete the car in you nexus and re-pair again.
Mine does the same thing on Spotify when it starts playing automatically when i get in.
If I unlock the phone and open Spotify the track info works correctly for the rest of the drive.

I'm not rooted and have no custom ROM on my N5. It's as it is as it came out of the factory.
I have a custom ROM on my Nexus 7 (Cyanogen) and it fails to display track information, too, if that's of any information.
Checking firmware is the first thing I did. Everything was up to date out of the factory.
I'll have to try re-setting the whole thing. I just hate doing stuff like that 'cos I've set the EQ and speaker balance up just how I like it and will have to do it again! Ha. v____v
Tried resetting the head unit - no luck.
Are there any ROMs that implement AVRCP 1.4 that I could test?
I installed CM11 on my Nexus 7 and paired that up.
No luck through Google Music BUT through Poweramp it displays track information perfectly... The plot thickens.
Any updates?

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would check and see if any progress has been made? I just purchased a kenwood receiver and I am not getting any track info from Play Music, Pandora, or iHeart radio. I'm baffled as it is a *somewhat* modern phone and a new receiver, I am shocked and frustrated that something simple like ID tags are not displayed.

Unfortunately no. I've just come to live with it now. Even after the Lollipop update, I get absolutely no track info on all my music apps. iPhones still work fine. Super annoying!

Thank you for taking the time to respond, even though that is sad news. It seems that what phones work with which receivers is somewhat arbitrary, which boggles my mind. I've read plenty of threads elsewhere where the N5 did provide track info and it was other phones that didn't. But alas, that is not the case with our setups, apparently. I just saw that 5.1.1 OTAs were going out. Crossing my fingers for the unlikely chance that this is a fluke bug that will be fixed with the update....
Hi,
I have a Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS DVD Receiver installed in my car and it has the Pandora app on it. This allows it to display the artist name, song, gives the ability to thumbs up/down from the touch screen itself and is useful.
I was able to use this with my Nexus 5 but when my OPO is connected via bluetooth this isn't available.
Does anyone know what the difference between the N5 and OPO is in regards to being able to launch the pandora app on my headunit?
Looks like this feature is called Pandora Radio Ready.
Thank you.

Which ROM are you running? I have the AVH-X2700BS and running CM11S (XNPH44S) on my OPO, both bluetooth audio and Pandora control works decently well. I almost exclusively use Pandora over bluetooth audio and typically with about every 5 or 6th song change the song info will not change, but upon switching to the next song it will. If that makes sense. I've have no issues with Pandora control over bluetooth as well although i've had very little usage .
Now, the reason i ask which ROM you are using is because i recent upgraded to CM12 (YNG1TAS17L) in hopes that it would fix or mitigate the touch screen issues i've been having lately. After updating to that, when i stream Pandora over bluetooth i get no song info and the controls don't work at all. I did not try the Pandora control.
Question for you: Do you contacts sync properly with the HU? My contacts say they sync yet there's nothing under phonebook but recent calls does show the names and numbers properly.
I have a Z150BH. Just tried Pandora via bluetooth for the first time today. Pandora seems to work as designed, and controls work fine. It was just a short drive so will put more time into the eval and get back any meaningful changes of thoughts.
What I would like to do, however, is 'cast' my screen to the Pioneer unit. Thinking a wifi weather, then WIFI direct ought to work, with a Netear HD adapter.

Which ROM are you running? As i stated in my post i had major issues with CM12 and very few with CM11. I'd love to be able to cast my screen too...without having to purchase an additional $$ adapter. I'd also like to be able to use any headset with controls that i want. I'd REALLY love to be able to use the touchscreen when the phone gets slightly warm as well! Some flagship killer. /rantover. :silly:

I'm running stock CM12S but it hasn't worked with 11 or 12. My contacts and the dialer sync perfectly and when I use the "bluetooth" function on my headunit I can stream and control the phone fine but what I'm trying to use is the app.
For instance in this screenshot:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/StaticFiles/PUSA/Images/Product Images/Car/AVH-X3500BHS_angle1.jpg
The bluetooth icon on the top right works fine, but the pandora icon second from the right on the top row does not even light up as an option for me to use (where it did when I connected my Nexus 5).
This is what I want to be able to use:

I think you have 3 options...
1) Wait for a possible fix in an upcoming update.
2) Find and flash the bluetooth stack from CM11 (not sure if this is possible or available)
3) Go back to CM11.
I'm not a robot! Thanks, captcha.

Is it a bluetooth stack thing that prevents some headunits from seeing certain phones over others? (Such as Nexus 5 vs OPO).
I'm not sure if that's a BT stack issue or incompatible protocol, etc. Maybe someone else with more knowledge can chime in on this one.
Interesting, looking at the phones on phonearena it looks like the N5 has v4.0 and A2DP whereas the OPO only has 4.0.
I wonder if A2DP is the culprit here.
Hi folks,
Whatever the device connected (hifi, PC, car speaker) in Bluetooth, whatever the application (GPS navigator, Poweramp etc.) It is impossible to listen to music (or voice of the navigator) without facing endless microcuts from My medaipad X2, stock rom.
It connects OK, it play OK for a while (30s or such) then it start to stutter. Impossible to listen to music this way. Playing with the internal speaker, or headphones is OK, so I suppose it is a Bluetooth issue, looking like a FIFO overflow, or lack of speed in the HF connexion.
Any solution ?
Its working fine with me, both in the car or with my Sony SBH2,without any stuttering.
if this problem is happening when the screen goes off, then try to switch to the Performance option in the Settings > Power saving, see if it helps.

No, the problem occurs mainly when the screen is on. What is strange is, sometimes, it works ok.
And sometimes, it don't suffer any action on the mdiapad. Problem of priority, I think. I will dig-it..

Oh, Lord !
So many decades to fight with M$ (till w98), and, now, everithing as bad with Android in the 21th century ?
I have send an all week to get 90% of the things working as expected on my mediapad ! (screen rotating, double SIm+SD card, etc...) and now, i whould risk to brick my device with complicated procedures with traps everywhere, just to can listen my music in my car ? And redo everithing from scrath ?
The only reason why so many people are rooring their devices etc... is they are not satified with the stock roms... It is a shame.

Don't worry, with the nice work of people like you, i will be able , in few month, to bypass most of the stupidities from manufacturers
By example, tried five minutes the FM radio this afternoon. VERY bad ! and the GUY, I don't believe-it. there is a "favorite" tab, and no way found to put a channel in it
I also had the same problem in the past.
In my case it was a crappy Chinese headset that was not working properly.
Now I use a Sony bt headset and I have no issues anymore.
You could try another bt headset. Preferably a brand name.

Definitively a mediapad issue. It works near ok when wifi is not active in the same time. And my other 2 speakers tested with my PC in UB works fluently.
I have noticed other strange things, but making the misbehaving apps "protected" solved everything. Try it. Some apps misbehave because they are shut down after screen is turned off

I would like. In this case, with the two apps i care about the sound, one (GPS Navigator ) prevent the device to turn off the screen, and the other (Power amp) is so well protected that it don't stop to play music even if you closethe app.
Hi All,
I'm having trouble with Bluetooth on my v10. I've looked through the forums but haven't seen any people with an issue quite like mine.
My car is a Hyundai and the radio was updated to the latest software about 6 months ago. The phone will pair fine and works perfectly for phone calls but I can't get it to play audio over bluetooth. In the bluetooth menu the "Media Option" check box is not visible at all. The particularly weird part is that while the audio still comes out of the phone the rest of the bluetooth features will work, I can change the song with the radio controls and the Artist/Title are displayed on the radio.
It works great with my soundbar, alarm clock, portable speaker, and my moms Dodge truck. That would lead me to believe it's the car however I never had any issues with my gs5 for a year and a half. I tried it with two different iphones and my roommates G4 and all of them worked perfectly.
My phone is an h900 on 5.1.1 rooted(had the same issue before root).
I'm at a loss here. Any ideas? Thanks.
I have a bug report w/ google on this. Please take a look and chime in to get them to fix this. https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=221322&thanks=221322&ts=1472583426
Im going to guess you have a 2011 to 2013 hyundai right? Probably with navi?
So google is blaming samsung of course so I have an email into them. Their chat was useless.
Your device is using Samsung's heavily customised version of Android which this website has no visibility of so cannot support. You need to speak to Samsung for user support and issues with their devices and their software. Thanks.
