Hey folks, here's a really nooby question for you. I apologise in advance, this is my first android phone, and I'm a little confused and paranoid about updating my ROM with a new version of android.
I want to get Paranoid Android on 4.4.3 on my phone, I'm currently using Slimkat on 4.4.2. How would I go about installing PA on 4.4.3 on my phone? Is it as simple as a quick flash of the PA ROM, or is it more difficult then that?
What I'm trying to ask is, how would I go about installing Paranoid Android that is built for KitKat 4.4.3 on my phone which is currently running SlimKat built for KitKat 4.4.2.

Would it work if I flashed the PA 4.4.2 version on my phone, then used the built in PA OTA thing to get the 4.4.3 update for me? I don't know. Just an idea

Backup your apps with app like Rom toolbox or titanium backup and wipe data. If you don't, there will most certainly be errors and crashes all over the rom.
And don't confuse data with internal storage. You can keep your storage, but it is also recommended to format it when switching roms.
So yeah...backup, throw on PC, flash. It's the most safe and fast way, otherwise you may be wasting time flashing again and again while cleaning of any mistakes.

Thinking about it now it sounds a little better. Use TiBu to backup my apps and make a backup of my internal storage on my computer to drag and drop back later. This wouldn't break root or re-lock bootloader will it?

Factoring reset/data reset from a custom recovery won't touch /sdcard. All your personal files will be fine.

Why do you want to lengthen the process?? Wipe, format system, flash PA, gapps. Done!

No, when done flashing the rom, if the rom comes rooted, I recommend installing SuperSU from the play store. It is a standart root app and pretty good one too. Otherwise, it won't affect neither your root or bootloader.

Boot into recovery > Wipe > Format system. The path should be something like this. It wipes EVERYTHING, including internal storage. So backup!

If you're using Philz, Go to mounts and storage and format system from there. It won't wipe your sdcard.

I am using the integrated swype thing in the AOSP keyboard, but guess it's the same
The PA zip will actually format /system before it install the new ROM over your system. I'm old school and still format system manually through recovery but if you don't know where that is in the recovery version I wouldn't sweat it. If you have problems after boot you may need to go in and figure out how to do it yourself but like I said most ROMs on the forum format /system before installing new system.

Yes it formats system but if there is anything in addon.d directory it will bring over some undesirables at times. Best to manually wipe system to keep it clean.

I'm thinking of selling my phone and want to make sure that it's been cleaned of all personal data. My phone is rooted and on CM 10.0
Do I just do the following:

Is it preferable to sell the phone with the stock ROM? If so how can I do that (assuming it's possible).

I would probably do a full wipe and flash the factory images thru fastboot and lock the bootloader. This will return it to brand new out of the box software.

The best way would be to flash the factory image, which will return everything stock and new. I have a guide here for it.

I've been formatting the SD through CWM.
What is the difference between formatting in CWM or a computer? CWM sees to wipe it clean, or am I missing something?

Formating through the computer will wipe and defragment it as well. It is a 'true" format than with CWM. CWM just wipes but not like through the computer.

I would format SD card through the computer than flash factory image from Google than root again by fastboot flash CWM and flash SU. This will ensure all is wiped and it will amaze the new user how fast it is. :thumbup:

I am using the latest version of TWRP, but I see two weird things:
1.- It's slow to install ROMS, takes much more time than in the N4, really slow.. like three times more time!
2.- The date is messed up (1970 :S).
What is your experience?

I don't have a n4 but I find twrp to run much faster on my n5 than on my s2 skyrocket.
Backup took a mighty long time...
Format of system partition or cache sometimes takes a while too, like15-20 min.

When I first installed twrp I tried to install a custom ROM but it was unsuccessful I had to restart Twrp for it to install successfully but no more problems after that?

Do u have the latest version 2.6.3.4? This issue has been fixed afaik. Wipes are very fast on my end.
Flashing some custom roms can take a while though.

My TWRP version is not the latest one, it's 2.6.3.2 (got it automatically downloaded with toolkit I think). Will upgrade then I get back home and see what happens.

realy slow ??
Flashing Cataclysm rom takes about a good 3-5 minutes. It just shows an animated loading bar, but doesn't seem to make any progress, then all of a sudden finishes. Scary, but still installs fine.
Just doesn't install as quickly as say a Note 2 flashing a rom.
It depends on the ROM you are flashing. Flashing is very fast with OmniROM for instance.

Full wipe from TWRP is quick, it's the wipe of /system when you install a ROM that is extremely slow.

What you're saying is that it's the ROM fault, is that it? Or this behaviour doesn't happen with CWM (flashing the same ROM obviously)?

Download TWRP manager from the play store, there's an option to install TWRP recovery under advanced I believe. If not under advance its under one of the options

Okay, I've looked everywhere but I haven't found any solutions. I was running PA and everything was fine. Flashed purity, booted, and phone was FC. Went back to twrp (latest version) to restore backup. It requested a password. I have never set one. I hit cancel, clicked restore, and my entire sdcard partition is gone. Tried cwm, same thing. Error mounting /data. I'd really appreciate some help here. I'm an experienced ROM flasher. Been doing it a while. Is there anything I can do to fix it, short of flashing factory image?

I just kept trying to format data and it finally worked. Weird. I'm adb side loading PA right now so hopefully that'll work.
Edit: just finished sideloading. It booted, but on the setup screen, I have a reoccurring "unfortunately, phone has stopped" message. Recovery still says unable to mount storage when trying to wipe anything.

Completely unnecessary.
The ROM has a backup script that saves your Google apps as well as the dialer if you flashed that. That conflicts with a fresh install.
All you need to do is, factory reset, wipe system so that the script has nothing to backup, them flash ROM and gapps. That's it.

Hi everyone!
Nexus battery's become pretty sloppy out of nowhere, I've tried all the techniques to get my battery back up, but nothing... I want to reset my nexus back to factory because I've put a load of rubbish on here that I really don't need that showed it down. What o want to know is what will happen if I factory reset? And how do I do it through TWRP? I wanna completely clean my phone back to scratch, except from my ROM, Kernel and TWRP... I know how to back up my app data so that's not a problem... Will it delete my internal storage because that's one thing I don't want to happen... Any help is appreciated thanks!

Only stock /recovery wipes /sdcard. Custom recovery leaves it alone. So just choose the wipe data / factory reset option in your recovery

No of course not! Wipe data / factory reset only wipes /data.
This is all pretty basic. Perhaps read the root sticky thread at the top of this forum for a greater understanding.

This is probably a stupid question, but if i wipe /system from TWRP it delete my SO? I mean, I will not able to use the phone until I install a new room?
Not sure about SOs or rooms but /system is where your ROM is so if you wipe it, you have no android to boot into.
