Hi
I am new to all this so please forgive me if i appear to be quite dumb
My son tried to put google edition on to my phone a samsung galaxy s4 and after his attempt the phone does not load up all i get now is kernalis not seandroidenforcing in red then under that in yellow it says set warranty bit:kernal
Any help would be appreciated

There you will get quick and proper help.
To help better, I need to know your exact device model name ... GT-I9500 or GT-I9505 ... or AT&T / Sprint / Verzion/ etc.
As there are different firmwares for the different variants.
Maybe your son accidentially flashed a wrong version to your phone.
E.g. here is the Google Play Edition ROM fo the Verzion S4: Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4 > Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4 Android Development > [ROM]【4.4.4】Google Play Edition 【KTU84P】,

No you wont loose anything if you root your device properly.
Use this method: Root 4.4.2 on GT-N7100 <All builds>
