[Q] android.process.media crashing after changing sdcard - HTC Sensation

I am trying to move from a 32 GB sdcard to a 64 GB card.
On my first effort I windows robocopy'd my files from the old sd card to the hdd and then from the hdd to the new card. When fired up the phone I instantly got a flood of android.process.media has unexpectedly stopped messages which I have never seen before. I was able to clear them out and have brief period where I was not interrupted by them. I was able to play new music off the card. It did appear that the gallery was potentially having difficulty with my old photos though. The messages keep coming though making the phone unusable.
I also tried just doing a fresh full format and putting the card in blank. Same problem.
I have used titanium backup to move some apps on to the sdcard. I assumed my robocopy on the first attempt would of preserved those.
I am using a 4.3.1 based rom.
I did try clearing the data of a couple of things like the play store and google services but they didn't seem to help. For the DRM process I tried freezing it, wiping the data, and thawing it but that didn't seem to help either.
Did I miss something? Any ideas?

Good idea, thought that was going to do the trick! Still getting the same message though. The recovery does complain about not being able to mount this one so I haven't been able to do the "fix permissions" in there (TWRP 2.6)
Maybe the card is incompatible? Seems weird that it partially works though.

Ooo getting less errors now it seems. The gallery still won't open though so maybe some in DCIM is still the culprit.

i am out of ideas mate

have you tried rebooting into safe mode? And is your phone even compatible with the 64 GB card? look for the phone supported sd cards in your phone's specs

Well, one difference between the cards is that the old 32GB is formatted FAT32 and the new 64GB card has been formatted to exfat.
I also noticed in the log:
E/AndroidRuntime( 7147): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to get provider com.android.providers.media.MediaProvider: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Can't obtain external volume ID for external volume.

This guy TWRP wiped the sdcard and than formated the card in Windows.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2743929
Is that any different than just formatting the card?

probably if you format the card from windows you will have success but i am not sure
if you do it format it to fat32 system

Well I updated to Albinoman's 4.4.2 rom and it seems to work fine!
Thanks for the for the ideas! :cyclops:

Formatting a 64GB card with any ROM will do the trick. Don't worry, it's compatible.
Happy to help.

[Q] Can't Anyone Help ???

I'll try this forum, over 200 views on my other posts and no suggestions. Is the problem that obscure ? The tablet, while not worthless, is getting there as I am unable to load any of the hacks and fixes to the SD card to install. Is there a work-around the SD card so I could reinstall the g-sensor fix ?
With all the great minds on this forum, surely someone will have some insight into my problem. To start with I am running the latest Vegan release (thanks Team) and have been since 1/1. The only thing I can think of that might have caused this problem was that I foolishly removed my SD card without dismounting it and popped in a blank one to see if it was working. Since then, I am unable to mount an SD card. If just says "Unmount in Progress". When I click on unmount, it will unmount it and give me the "Mount SD card" option, when I try to mount it, it will say "preparing SD card", then go back to "Unmount in Progress". When I try to mount a new card, it says "Card blank or unsupported file system". But all the other card I have used in my Gtab give me the same Unmount in Progress issues. I reinstalled Vegan. Apps that used to work, no longer work, they just open and close (No FC message)
Someone please help !!!

I'm not one of the g tablet great minds but I'll make a suggestion that always works for me.
1) Format your external SD card in a computer with Fat32. Preferably not a quick format.
2) Using Recovery wipe EVERYTHING, repartition/format the internal memory.
3) Reboot into Recovery
4) Connect to a computer, mount usb, copy your files over again.
5) Re-install the rom of your choice.
In my experience (at least on the HD2 with Android) crazy FC's and otherwise unexpected behavior from a freshly installed ROM means there are leftovers that were not removed from the previously installed rom.
IMHO the device should be completely empty of every bit of software before reinstalling.
Edit: On a side note, I have NOT been able to get an external SD card from recovery which is why I do everything through USB-Mount with the computer.
If you can mount via usb, you could put the ClockWorkMod (CWM) update.zip and recovery file and then reboot with Pwr/Vol+. That should install CWM.
Then you will be able to boot into CWM and repartition or whatever you need to do. Personally I would repatition, clean out the caches, wipe data, etc. and then start with a clean slate.
Hope I have not misunderstood what you need. Hope this helps.

Factory Re-set
Don't know if this will help or not, somtimes you need to clear out the cashe.
Have you tried going into settings and clicking factory reset?
You will lose your user data, but this might be enough to fix the problem. I think you have parts of two installs overlapping each other.
Also, reformatting the SD card sounds like the next step to try if factory reset does not fix the problem.
Third you could NVflash back to stock and then start over. Then do factory reset after each install.
If you have to wipe everything I would suggest formatting your internal sdcard in clockwork to 2048 and 0

If you did a factory reset and nothing happened then the reset didn't work. I would install clockwork recovery from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=851657
Then boot into clockwork recovery and clear data/cache. You will have to redo the market fix and install your apps. If this doesn't stop the force closes then boot into clockwork recovery and repartition your sdcard to 2048 and 0
I'm having the same problem. I did nvflash and started fresh. Installed CWM making sure to wipe data/cache. I partioned the SD to 2048/0. I installed vegan 5.1 and its update. I think I did everything by the book, yet it still says Unmount in progress. This did not occur when I was running stock.
I tried the sd card from mt Evo as well. It does the same thing. It also does not recorgnize any USB flash installed as well.
I've run out of ideas. Can anyone help?
Thanks very much.

My VEGAn 5.1.1 says same thing but I never have a problem accessing files on it (/mnt/sdcard2). Are you sure you are not confused by the fact that the internal memory is divided into 2 GB "system" and 14 GB SD1?

Be patient, it took forever to mount a thumb drive for the first time and I too had thought something was wrong. Try again after a reboot and a couple of minutes.
Hope this helps
Thanks for trying to help. I pretty much gave up and installed TNT 5.0. I've had the thumb drive in there for 5 minutes but I'll keep it in to see if it shows up. In TNT, the SD card seems to be working/appearing fine.
I really liked Vegan, but I'll keep TNT for at least a few days to see how it does.
Thanks again!

Micro SD Write-Protection error !!

This is an unusual problem. I am using a 2GB Sandisk MicroSD card on my G3 running a slightly modified version of DDJP2. The problem i am facing is that i can neither delete the contents of my MicroSD Card nor format it. Here are the steps i took:
1) Tried deleting folders individually as well as batch-wise
2) Unmounted & Formatted SD Card from Phone
3) Connected to a PC running XP SP3 (Both in Kies & Mass Storage mode) and tried to delete / format
4) Tried both quick format as well as the total format
5) Flashed different firmwares, wiped cache/data, hard reset and then formatted
In all the above cases, when i re-checked the SD Card, i could all the original files available on the card. Surprisingly, all the folders e.g. the music/songs folder was working fine.
Deleting the folder(s) shows that the content is write-protected; therefore it is probably not letting me delete or format the contents. While searching for possible solutions i came across some (unique?) methods -
1) Flipping the "write' switch -- Not possible since i do not use an adapter and the MicroSD hasnt got one built-in
2) Taping a notch - Wasnt sure what that meant exactly
3) Try formatting the MicroSD in a Camera - Eh ?
Anyone could possibly enlighten me on how to remove the write-protection on my MicroSD w/o using any kind of external device and possibly by software manipulation only ?
I am too having this exact problem. it's a 8gb micro sdhc.
have you solved it or it was a malfunction on the card?
maybe you should try formating it in cwm?

the problem is that I don't have a samsung phone. only posted here because os a google search about my problem.
although I have an htc magic 32a but I don't know if I can do that here...
No, i couldnt solve the problem and replaced the card. Although my folders on the "defective" card work fine and i can even transfer them via bluetooth. I must admit i didnt try CWM wipe at that time although i did try advanced wiping softwares via PC. For flashing CWM or a CWM enabled kernel please visit your phone's sub-section on XDA. You must flash CWM on your phone, mot only to try the wipe but also to make a backup of your phone's image in case it gets corrupted and you need to restore it

Tried this on an Htc Magic with clockwork recovery installed. tried to format /sdcard but got error:
"error mounting /sdcard!
skipping format...
done"
tried also partitioning sd card but got error too.
and btw the previous filesystem is exfat so that is why it can't be mounted in android.
anyway also tried formatting in gparted and macintosh. both failed.

The camera suggestion (formatting after putting in a digital camera) did the trick for me, good idea! It gave me a new set of DCIM folders, but I can pop it into my PC now and just delete them. Seems ridiculous that my camera can do it but my PC can't.

[Q] Odd SD problem - Help

Problem when I reboot my phone the internal SD is not available only the external micro-SD. I remove the micro-SD and then I can see my internal SD. I am beginning to think my Infuse is on it's last leg. Good thing I can upgrade on 1st January.
I have tried Wipe Cache Partition and Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache. No help. This is the second time, thought I had it fixed by returning to stock then back to CM10 4.2 all was well then I saw a post about the new camera that I didn't have yet so I flashed it. Now I am back to SD problem.
If anyone has an idea what is causing this, other than me. I would greatly appreciate it.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix or advise on new phone to get?
Thank you!

Also I noticed that the date time stamp on microSD says 31 Dec 69
The above is the same with it working or with it not so thats not the problem and it doesn't help to solve it.
I have found that as long as I don't have to restart my phone when it is working it will remain working. If I think I have a reason to reboot I must make sure I really want to do this.
As the work to get it straight involves remove micro-SD, wipe/format reinstall of ROM and GApps and then restore enough to edit build.prop for tweaking lockscreen powerdown install micro-SD then powerup to restore rest of the apps.
If anyone knows what might be causing this I would really appreciate it. Even if you could point me to the log file to look at that might give me a clue that would be very nice.

If it works with out microsd just don't use one. 14 gigs is plenty. Otherwise maybe format the microsd? Or try a full stock wipe and see if it all comes back.

cpio I believe means copy in and out.
Since phone works without micro-sd and fails with it try a new micro sd or a different rom.
As for the date you mentioned, it is not unusual to find files with dates that are years in the past. Upgrade? If you are staying with AT&T pick 3-5 phones from their website that based on specs and price meet you needs and spend some hands on time with each. No one can make a better decision as to your next phone than you. Well, maybe bigjoe could...

your post is the closest example to the SAME problem i am having so i will see if we are experiencing the same thing.
Im running Scott's 4.2.1 Unofficial CM10 - 12/02 build and ever since the 11/30 build, my internal ~14GB sdcard (called USB Storage when i look under system settings / storage) will not mount. the 2GB "internal" Storage and my 64GB External are always visible.
whats strange, is that when i reboot into recovery, i can still get all the data in this "sdcard" partition, it just will not mount when booted.
When i 1st boot from a new flash, its there, but after a reboot (and every reboot after that) it shows for a split-second, then disappears.
I come into this thread and seen it may have something to do with my External SD, i tried it removing the External SD, rebooted, and sure enough, it brought back my internal SD.
i shut down, re-inserted my External SD and powered up, and the USB Storage did NOT disappear but i cant leave well enough alone, so I rebooted 1 more time... POOF... USB Storage GONE....
How could the External SD have such an impact on the mounting of the Internal SD?
In Scott's thread he mentions that external (micro) sd should be removed before flashing the rom... don't know if that is the case, just sayin'.

I have flashed & reflashed with and without, no change. I have reformatted the External SD, no change.
I think i have isolated the issue to the physical presense if the External SD, but this is not an issue with the 11/4 build. I just go back to 4.1.2 till the next release
Downgrading back to 11/04 now
I am downgrading to see if that fixes it will let you know. Did it work for you?
Some one had a point. How is it not available? No media can be seen. Or is it non existent in root explorer. PR under system settings> storage.
If its the first it might be a .nomedia file in the root directory.

After downgrading back to 4.1.2 of CM10 my problem goes away. Another thing that I noticed is that the default APN's are now editable and I can delete them as well. While on 4.2 the only thing I could do was create a new one and set it to be the one in use. I guess part of the system is read only. Trying to save us from messing something up.

Well for me, not available means not mounted & unmounable, the sdcard directory can be seen, but it empty through root explorer.
the "other way in" through Storage/Sdcard0 shows the dame, nothing, REMOVE the external SD, the internal SD (called USB Storage in settings/storage) Mounts in reboot. .nomedia is not the issue as when the External SD is present, i can play media (from the External SD, but the camera and other apps that rely on the internal SD for storage, can not function.
When i reboot into recovery, i can see and access all the files (typically where the flashable files reside when i drag them over from my PC) both internal and external, and when i reboot, the MOMENT the unlock screen appears i dash over to settings/storage and the internal drive appears, but collapses in a less then a second. (as unmounted)

yes, returning to the 11/4 (4.1.2) ROM I do not experience this issue.
I tried scott.hart.bti 4.2.1 12/11
Went up to try 4.2.1 12/11 - No difference - The only thing I was able to do in this one was delete unused APN and edit save new one.
Wish I knew how to program and spot the differences in the code somewhere. I'd really like to stay on 4.2.1 but without my micro-SD it seems like a waste.
I have not had issues with 12/12, thought I'd share my process: wipe data/factory, wipe cache, wipe dalvik (advanced), format system (mounts and storage), install ROM, wipe dalvik, install Scott's gapps, reboot. I also don't auto restore apps. There are still compatibility issues with some apps and 4.2

Accidentally clicked 'FACTORY RESET' in HBOOT

I accidentally hit the FACTORY RESET option in HBOOT, and it seems the phone just rebooted into TWRP without doing anything. However it seems my SDcard is now empty and unformatted. Earlier I had two "Internal SDcard" options in TWRP\Mount but now I just have one, and if I try to click on Mount USB storage, the removable disk appears as an unformatted disk on my PC. Is there any to fix this? Is the SD gone for good or can I recover the data?
Run a Ruu and your phone should be fine again (dont forget to relock your bootloader)
I think your data you wiped is hopelessy gone..
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
I made a nandroid luckily, but I just realised that the problem is due to the sdcard not actually being able to mount. It says
E:unable to mount '/sdcard'
I'm using TWRP 2.5, maybe I will try with 2.3.1.0.
EDIT: Okay that didn't help. If I run a RUU won't it erase my SD card? I don't want to lose what's on there, is there any way to fix it and be able to mount it again?

before going through the trouble of an RUU, if you can see the unformatted disk from your computer just try formatting it there into a FAT32 partition like you would any other drive. This has worked for folks successfully. But as for data recovery....
Dang that sucks... was there some sort of confirmation before starting the wipe? I've always been paranoid that I might fat finger it randomly and it just wipes without some kind of second check
Reflash the recovery img from fastboot then boot into recovery, you should be able to mount sd
Zero help to anyone, but I did exactly the same thing myself and had to mount the SD card in recovery and format.
It hurts!!
Well it's official. All my data is forever gone. And no there was no notification, I hit "FACTORY RESET", and it just paused for a second then rebooted into TWRP with my SD instantly destroyed. I tried every possible trick in the book. The problem for me wasn't just getting it to mount and work again, I could have done that in 20 seconds. The problem was to try and get it back WITH all my data, which I failed.
In the end, I made a RAW disk image backup of the sd card partition which for some bizarre reason ended up with a file that was 6 MB in size instead of 10 GB... I knew my data had somehow got nuked. I decided to just reformat it (Quick Format) as FAT32 on the PC, then I ran a host of data recovery programs, even those that were specialised in finding stuff from formatted drives. None of them could even find ONE file. But after format I was able to use it as normal.
I have really no clue how the entire drive was nuked within a fraction of a second, even all the data on it, but it is what it is.
On the bright side, for some reason my phone seems MUCH faster now, especially when installing apps, and the battery seems to last noticeably longer too.

I decided to just reformat it (Quick Format) as FAT32 on the PC, then I ran a host of data recovery programs, even those that were specialised in finding stuff from formatted drives. None of them could even find ONE file. But after format I was able to use it as normal.

It's hard to do recover because normal format recovery might not work but you can try the old ver of Easy Recovery Pro 6.x(I don't know why but the lastest ver seems removed RAW recovery) and use the RAW recovery, it usually could find some stuffs. You can also try out Diskgenius.

ZIP/RAR files transferred to ZUK Z2 turn out corrupted(CRC error)

Basically if I download a zip/rar file via wifi or transfer it from my PC via cable it almost always turns out that my zuk z2 has corrupted it (CRC checksum error). I have flashed and done factory reset. Tried it on vendor rom (2.0.093st) and now on official 2.0.133st with the same issue. I did not have this issue 2 weeks ago. The phone is barely a month. I also noticed freezing and blinking led light issue around the same time, not sure if it's related.

Transferred files getting corrupted are often times a result of the storage medium itself (your Internal/External SD card) being corrupted. And not necessarily a buggy ROM. Try formatting your device's storage and see if that solves your issue.

I flashed it and then did a factory reset but still had the same issue. It's the internal SD card of the phone, no option for external. I have never heard of internal SD card of a phone being corrupted before, lately I have been having some hang ups involving the phone going black with the led flashing repeatedly. Do you think they could be related

A factory reset doesn't normally erase the internal SD. Only the internal storage. Because then all your files (including your media) would've gotten erased every time you did a factory reset.
If the led is blinking repeatedly regardless of the ROM, then it might be a hardware defect. And similarly, even though corrupt internal SD cards are rare, it is possible. OEMS cut corners sometimes in order to keep costs down. Especially when they try to put "top notch" specs in an "unbelievably cheap" phone.

Go to settings->storage and the option should be in there somewhere.
Ensure you backup/transfer all your files to your PC first though.
And you can use this app (if it doesn't continuously crash on your device :silly: ) to check whether or not there's actually a problem with the internal SD before doing the full format.

Unfortunately my phone does not have format and the app you suggested keeps crashing, is there a chkdsk version for android?

That's weird. Are you sure?
Mind taking a screenshot of your storage screen and posting it?

Over the weekend I decided to install twrp and root it. I wiped the whole storage, data, cache etc and installed a cutom rom. Same issue still persists when I copy rar/zip files.

Since android doesn't cone with a zip viewer, what third party app(s) have you been using?

App called rar made by rarlabs creators of winrar. I also copy the rar/zip files back to my pc and test on winrar as well to confirm it is corrupt and it usually is.
