Damn...my third Android device and a completely new dev community. Just wanted to drop by and say hi and I am looking forward to these next few months(we know new phones come out all the time) with you guys.
Welcome! Some of the best advice I can give is back up your IMEI before you start flashing roms, Synergy has a nice backup built into their rom install that's pretty nice.

What is this IMEI backup you speak of? Lol. I'm getting a galaxy s 3 today. Never owned a Samsung, android anyways. Always had HTC for rooting
Welcome! You will be extremely happy with the phone itself, and the amount of developer it is receiving now that the bootloader is unlocked.
As usual, make sure you back everything up before flashing ROMS and enjoy!
I do have one question, I have rooted my SG3, but left the bootloader unlocked. Should I worry about my IMEI getting corrupted?

It's when you back up the cell information I think. If it gets erased you won't be able to connect to anything at all.

I read its best to do it period. People flashing aosp have been losing it more commonly. Unless I'm reading old threads.

I still have to get used to this phone...this is going to sound weird...but using it makes me feel as if I'm in a foreign place

I am also getting my S3 either tomorrow or Friday. Just couldn't take the GNEX anymore.
Looking forward to the new community although the GNEX community has been one of the best I have seen so far with the least amount of trolls and fights.
People using great phone have to be great
Never mind it was a joke. And congrats on your SIII.

That's almost exactly what I did with mine yesterday....I say almost because I received mine about an hour later

I just received mine today and ws thinking to run it stock for a few days to make sure it runs good and this way I cannot blame anything on rooting it.
I remember with the SGS2 on Sprint, after we rooted it it caused a lot of radio issues. Samsung eventually fixed that.
Very hard to hold out though. I do want to run stock Rom rooted as I think it has a lot of cool features. I have been running Jelly Bean on my GNEX for a while now and the 2 things I really liked was Google Now and the new notifications.
I see running CM10 might cause IMEI issues but we can back that up in terminal emulator I see. Once we have that backed up is there anything else one needs to worry about or that is really the only issue that can make our device useless.......
I assume if we stay with TW roms there are no issues with the IMEI? If the IMEI gets messed up, will you know from your data just not working?
I hate getting a device after it has been out a little while! I like to to be there from the beginning and learn with everyone else. Now I feel like I have so much catching up to do!!!
I appreciate everyone's input and help and boy this phone eats my Nexus for lunch, dinner and breakfast!
Im not rooting quite yet...there arent any official ROMs for Jellybean yet...not only that, there are a few things I actually like in Touchwiz surprisingly enough, and yet a few things I dont. I had to replace the launcher(folder system is stupid). I also had to replace the keyboard with the stock Android 4.0 keyboard and the sounds on this phone really annoy me. Anyway, so I guess I am holding out for a good port(or maybe even VZW build) of Touchwiz with JellyBean.
Just a note to you guys with new S3s:
Back your IMEI up!
Seriously. Just do it.
Flashing ANYTHING, be it a TouchWiz ROM or a kernel (even a stock one!) have been reported as having at least one case of IMEI loss.
Just please do it.
From what I understand, with a proper IMEI backup and the right tools (and maybe an LTE SIM reprovisioning) you can restore a device with non-functional CDMA/LTE data/calling.
I've had my Verizon S3 with unlimited data since it was introduced. I rooted and unlocked it as soon as solutions were available. I have installed a couple of AOSP based ROMs, Clockwork & TWRP recoveries and a host of TouchWiz based ROMs. I am currently running Scott's CleanROM 8.2.
I am waiting for a "stock" version of 4.4 with an unlocked bootloader & root. I expected Scott, Old&Slow or BeansTown, etc. to have an unlocked, unknoxed version fairly soon, as they always have in the past. I think I read that Scott had moved on to another device. I donated to Scott several times and valued his efforts, as do the the efforts of the entire DEV community for making available what I have zero chance of creating.
I have been toying with the idea of just odining the 4.4.2 OTA and surrendering. I am always happy enough with the TW ROMS and don't expect any further upgrade love from Verizon. I think with root I can do what I *need* most which is the ability to disable the home key "wake" function so I'm not turning on the phone in my back pocket every time I sit down. I also like to debloat and a variety of other root privileged tasks.
Is the consensus that someone will come with a solution, or should I just take the OTA route?
To be honest, I would try one of the new AOSP ROMs. Signal, Bluetooth, and camera issues are pretty much whipped now, and I haven't experienced any SMS/MMS issues on the two I've tried. If you want stability, you could always run straight CM, too.
Main reason I'm recommending this is that I was in exact same situation a few days ago, considering flashing the OTA. But I realized that I may want to keep this phone a while longer yet, and since I doubt Verizon will take it beyond 4.4, the only way to do that would be flashing an AOSP ROM. I'm on a 4.4.4 ROM now that has been rock solid/stable.
No one knows the future. All we can currently.say is that it is being worked on.
Time will reveal whether the work will pay off.
The S3 isn't the top of the priority list for most developers, but it's being worked on.

Return Verizon Galaxy S3 4.3 VRUCML1 to stock rom
My phone (Verizon Galaxy S3 with OTA 4.3 VRUCML1) has been rooted for a while and never had issues with it until yesterday. In the past I tried TWRP custom rom (it triggered the flash counter), but didn't go too far with it.
Since yesterday it's rebooting a few seconds after the startup screen (swipe to unlock the screen). I tried resetting it to the factory defaults, but it won't get passed the yellow triangle in DOWNLOAD MODE (the flash binary counter is 1 and displays custom rom). I can still open the phone in SAFE MODE, but would prefer to go back to the stock ROM.
Can I flash back a stock ROM, and in this case how to?
Thanks.
Costi
Scott sold his S3 so it won't be him, I'm not sure if beans even has his S3 anymore either.

With upcoming availability of 6.0 , has anyone tried it yet ?
I wouldn't mind trying it but with Knox and such , I figure why temp the hand of fate after my present run in with 5.1.
It looks like they can root 6.0 .
I don't know if it's available for our phones yet .
Have any of you people done the update yet and if you have , what do you think of it ?
I guess no one has played with it yet?
I believe its not available for our phones yet. As far as I've heard, as of a couple weeks ago, the beta is for Nexus devices only.
I have shamed myself !
I was reading online somewhere that it was out.
I guess that explains it.
I think I read where they already have root for it.
Oh well, this 5.1.1 dog is getting old with all the restarts.
It was good in the beginning though.
Too bad the damned thing fell flat on it's face.

It definitely sucks that Samsung has forgotten how special this phone is. That being said, I am contempt with 4.4.4. I don't think the Marshmellow update will be that good for the Edge but I could be wrong. I am hoping I am. Marshmellow with the Edge features integrated like it is in 4.4.4 with the same or better battery life is all I want
I can only see 6.0 being worse with all security crap built into this 5.1.1 over 4.4.4.
I've come to refer to this phone as the "restart retard".
5.1.1 was great when it first was installed on my phone and when it works right,it's fast.
The problem is:
How often does it work right?
I'm good.
Two weeks ago my edge was acting retarded. I sent it back and got a refurbished one (because I refuse to get the new note 5 iPhone clone). My new edge shipped with 5.1.1 installed. Surprisingly I have no issues at all. No restarts or headaches. Fingers crossed. If T-Mobile gives us a crappy marshmallow version - if Samsung even remembers they made the phone - I will have no issues going back to kit Kat because i miss the camera button not being on the edge any longer.

That was ultimately what made me go back to Kit Kat. I coulda dealt with my notifications popping up on screen every now and then but removing the shutter button from the Edge screen was too much. or someeone with moderate hands, the edge shutter made taking pics and selfies soo fricking easy
Do let us know if you are able to go down to 4.4.4. I would like to play around with some Note 5 Custom ROMs and be able to go back to 4.4.4 stock. Seems to be the best thing this phone ever got from Samsung.
Any word on how long your screen time is on 5.1.1? I only get about 5 hours on 4.4.4 stock. And yeah I also have a TMobile phone running on MetroPCS so basically TMobile

I am getting around four to four and a half hours of screen time at the moment. It does go down to about 4 on most occasions because I do a lot of YouTube. However I really don't care because I carry an extra battery - which I can't do with the note 5. With regards to going back to the KitKat version… below is a message that I got from one of the helpful subscribers on this board who help me out with this a while ago. Actually went back to KitKat about 7 months ago and I had it on my phone that I recently returned. I just have not put KitKat back on the new phone that I got last week I did not feel the need to do it at this point since I'm having no problems right now with the lollipop version that I have. If anything should happen in the next few months where I have to start all over again then I may do this process and go back to KitKat. It is very simple to do and I had no problems with the installation hopefully it works for you as well.

Type in model number SM-915T and download the most recent version of KitKat. The most recent version of KitKat for the Note Edge on T-Mobile was dated 12-2-2014. Before you are allowed to download files from sammobile, you will need to create a free user account.
When you click on the firmware version you want, there will be instructions that tell you how to install the firmware. When I downgraded, I was told to download ODIN v3.09. I checked sammobile today and it looks like they updated the instructions to include a newer version of ODIN. Sammobile doesn't have ODIN available for download on their website, but I'm sure you can easily find it using Google or asking on XDA.
Here are some tips that is not listed in the instructions on Sammobile. If you follow their instructions and your phone is taking more than 5 minutes to fully turn on (stuck on the T-Mobile logo/screen), you will need to wipe/factory reset your Note Edge. To do this, I pulled out my battery and started my phone in recovery mode (Hold volume up and the home button while turning on the phone). Wipe the cache/factory reset your device and your Note Edge should be up and running again. To make sure that I don't receive OTA updates from T-Mobile, I disabled the software update app.
Remember, when you go through this process, you will lose all pictures/docs/downloads/etc. on your phone. Backup what you need before downgrading.
Good luck with the downgrade. If all goes well, you will definitely enjoy everything that made the Note Edge unique.

I presume… CrApple?
Yeah, I really hated doing that, but the consistency of performance and firmware updates just can't be beat. Apple Pay is a pleasure to use. The fingerprint scanner is ultra fast. Very good battery life. Yada yada yada... the list goes on. I do miss the Edge's screen color and resolution. I also miss the wonderful alarm clock of the Edge. Perhaps when Marshmallow comes out for it, the new firmware, I hope, will fix all the issues that this past update broke.
What cpu does the note edge have?

I did not take a look at your comment until today. I was able to go back yo kit kay with the 5.0.1 version of lollipop. Today I tried to dod the same procedure as before and odin gave me a fail notice. I thought it was a debugging issue bit I cut it on and it still did not take. Sis you know why and if so is there a way around it? I should not have opened my big mouth about how smooth things were going. Now after the new update to 5.1.1 I get unsent texts and YouTube can't find a stream half the time. Ou want kit Kat back. FML.
Things are getting interesting.
It seems over at Yellow Bullet forums there's a gentleman who has been forced an upgrade to Marshmallow from Lollipop and it's killing his battery
He says he had auto updates turned off and it was still forced on him.
I understand he's a Verizon customer as well.

This doesn't sound good.
Any Verizon users on here experience the same thing?
Any experiences to tell?

I'm getting about 2 hours average screen on time on 5.1.1. HORRIBLE. Im on Sprint
Used to get 4 hours on 5.0.1
I have a PIN on my phone. I have been using Tasker to unlock my phone when my bluetooth headset is connected, and it's worked well enough. I was wondering if there is a way to accomplish the same thing with my watch.
I am aware of SmartLock in Lollipop, but due to many issues with Lollipop on the Note 4, I am still running KitKat. I am able to accomplish the same thing with Tasker and my bluetooth headset because when it is on, it is connected. When I check my list of bluetooth devices on the phone, it just shows the watch as paired, not connected.
I'm guessing that it won't be possible without Lollipop, but thought that I'd ask anyway.
Thanks
I have a N910C rocking a Note 5 ported rom. Lollipop works like a charm there and Smart Lock is super useful. If you don't want to root your phone it's okay, since almost all of the models have already available the official update to Lollipop 5.1.1, which works worlds better than 5.0 and it still manages to be slightly better than 4.4.4 (at least that's what I think).
If you still don't want to update your phone, then I'm sorry, but I don't know any third app that has that functionality (don't fret though, I'm sure there must be at least one out there ).

I am coming from a US Verizon Note 4, and it's a special case.
It cannot be rooted, because Verizon won't allow it. No exploit has ever been found. I would love to be able to root it, but it's not possible. When 5.01 came out, it caused major problems with the Note 4, with major battery drain and apps crashing all over the place. A lot of us were able to ODIN back to 4.4.4. 5.1.1 came out for my phone this week, but I'm understandably nervous about going to it. I'm waiting for more reports to come in regarding whether the battery and crashing issues have been fixed.
I just did some reading and I found that I need to enable it in security settings on the phone. Now everything is back to normal.

Just go to 5.1.1. It's better than kitkat and lollipop 5.0
For example i was browsing reddit earlier and it was almost in the 60s. The room temperature is 24º so this is way too high.
My phone has always done this though, i think it may have come defective but it's 2 years old now and still works so it's not that bad.
I was just wondering if i could do something like undervolt or maybe turn off a core that may be causing the problems? Or maybe there's an accessory i could buy to work as a sort of better heatsink?
Looking for any help and suggestions, thank you.
Maybe rooting the device and removing the bloatware (Joy Launcher, File manager, other TCL apps you do not use ...) would help. Since I did this, my idol3 runs much better.

I'm using Resurrection remix from here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/development/rom-idol-3-5-5-t3616675/page8#post73661235
It already overheated before i installed it though
I just spoke to my brother. He's been using the 6045I for about a year with no problems on a stock MM ROM. He tells me it gets really warm after playing a simple game like solitaire or browsing for 15 minutes. This started about a week ago so I am going to request an RMA.
I have a brand new in the box Idol 3 (6045i) that I am setting up for him. When I booted the phone, it was running stock LP. I updated it to stock MM via OTA, installed about 7 Play Store updates, and it's still really cool to the touch.
I'm not sure which model you have but it may be common to the 5.5" Idol 3?

Ok but i was looking for answers other than "i guess you're ****ed m8".
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to the problem. I'll be sending my bother's phone in for warranty service.
Update: since the was not sold in the usa, Alcatel will not warranty the phone as the phone was sold by a Canadian carrier with a 1 year warranty. I also noticed that the power button doesn't always work so I'm going to scrap the phone. Not worth it to fix it.
