[Q] Recoloring elements of contacts - General Questions and Answers

Hey everyone,
First of all sorry if I posted in the wrong section, I'm very much new here, trying to find my way around the forums.
Now, for my question: I'm using an old but trusty Galaxy Ace with Nebulosity ROM, Nova Launcher and the Gummy Liberty Gold theme. Pretty much everything in my phone is colored yellow or black, except those pesky little blue triangles in the bottom right corner of the contacts icons. (See the attached picture and you'll know what I'm talking about.) It really keeps bugging me as everything else is pretty much unified color-wise. Now, the problem is that I don't really know where the system gets the resources for that particular item. I suspect I could switch the launcher's color theme, but it causes a crash on the current ROM I'm using and forces me to reinstall the launcher. Is there any way to recolor that particular element? How can I find and modify it without having to change the launcher's color theme (if it's even possible at all)? Something I have tried (bear in mind that I have very little programming background, I'm pretty much picking up everything as I go) was decompiling the Liberty Gold theme in hope of finding a little blue triangle somewhere along the assets so that I can recolor it, but alas, nothing like that - this is why I'm suspecting that that element might be part of the system itself instead of the theme.
These might all be stupid questions, as I said, I don't know half as much about these things as I should, but I would really appreciate if someone could elucidate me on the destination of that particular element (or just it's color source) so that I could recolor (either in photoshop or by replacing the color code) it and make the whole UI have the same color scheme. It's not too too big of a problem and I do not want to waste anyone's time, but if there's someone out there who happens to know the answer, please write, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you in advance!

[Q] Icon help?

Guys, I am working on my first theme, using HDWall for my Imagio running Sense 2.1 I was wondering if there is anyone willing to take the 128 and 64 icons for my slider and creating a transparent background. I don't have photo shop or anything like that. I got these from a website, and when I use photo editor to make transparent background, it doesn't work right. So I use paint to make the background a different color (these are black and white), but when I go to save, it makes the colors all shaded, so I spend hours on just one. There has got to be an easier way.
So I was wondering if anyone is willing to take these and do that for me? Attached is just one that I resized to the 128 and 64 required sizes, and they are all this way.
If anyone is willing to do that for me, I will pm you the remaining 18 (2 for each slider I use)
And if anyone is interested, once I get the sliders done, I will be more than willing to release the cab of Calvin and Hobbes to anyone who wants it, but only after I get it looking good enough for you graphic guys!
Thanks in advance!
Is this good enough? Some white borders remain though, I just used Gimp, select by color, cut and paste in a new image... This is as far as my graphic skills go
nailed it!
Tito12, that looks great! Do you mind doing a few more?
Maybe you could use the magic wand tool. And pixlr.com/editor is a good online image editor.
I will give those a try, thanks Firetiger!
Firetiger's advice is better for you to learn, but I'm ready to help
Thanks, but I tried firetigers advice, and I couldnt figure it out, so I am trying something.
I am using Microsoft Paint and PhotoEditor, and I may have figured it out. What I was doing was editing the jpg, which, when completed, would continue to fade the colors in and out. BUT when I converted it to png, I could then use another color to change the background in paint, then go back to photoeditor and tell the program to take that color and make transparent.
I just finished the last one (for me, I don't have icons for photos and music, since I rarely use those) and am going to build the cab and see what happens! If it doesn't look good, I will post all of them to your pm!
Thanks again guys, will see what happens!
Edit - Yea, it worked! I am not happy with the wallpaper I chose, but the icons look pretty good. I am going to see about doing some more improvements, but I will attach what I did, and for a first time with limited systems, I think they came out pretty good!

[MOD][PORT][THEME] Notification Menu Power Control Widgets for Sense - 3.70 - THEMES!

First of all, major thanks to JsChiSurf for his amazing work on this port!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877003
This is a separate thread for themes of this mod.
I've always wanted a clean, slick looking shade on the notifications pull down and thanks to JsChiSurf, it's pretty easy to theme it.
Here are two that I made today. I haven't gotten around to skinning the buttons yet though.
Try these, static images don't do them justice, it's neat seeing the way they move. For more details on flashing these, please refer for JsChiSurf's thread above. These already contain the updated 2.1.1 services jar.
After zipping, you can use this:

to restore your battery %. Thanks chogardjr!

since he originally ported this, it's best to refer back to his thread.
oh, i already included his latest 2.1.1 services jar, so there's no need to flash twice.

Using with Myn rom
I think the brushed metal version looks great and want to install, but would that change myn's black notification menu power control back to white or just add the metal screen drop down. I like the black notification menu power control over the white version.
Thanks

Is it just a matter of replacing the PNG's?
What PNG optimization do you recommend?
Also, how do you change the color of the fonts? I tried to look at the xml files but they open up as strange characters in any text editor I use (Notepad++, notepad, etc)
I also noticed that I lost my battery % after flash jschisurf's mod?
Thanks for your faith! The hardest part is knowing where all the PNG's are that need to be replaced!
Replacing png's is the noob way to do it. But is is the best place to start. You need to find apktool and learn how to use it. This will solve most of your problems with xml's. You also need a program called xml editor. This is my starters list. Here is a link you might learn a lot from.
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/index.html
As far as learning which png's, most are in the drawable-hdpi folder. Stay away from .9.png files untill your ready for them. Apktool will let you know when you make a mistake and where the mistake is to fix. Search youtube and do a lot of reading in this forum. It seems like a lot but after a while you will start to understand how the OS works and manages the files. Happy Themeing!

Go to the sticky where the rom wiki is and at the bottom of that page you will find kitchens. One is for changing battery icons. That one is the easy fix to getting the icons you want into the his mod. But if you must know more, there are 3 xml files in the drawable folder that needs to be replaced to work with more png files than his stock ones. All I can say is APKTOOL and 7ZIP is the bread and butter.
Thanks for the awesome tips and info!
I found the .png for the toggle switches (stat_power_background.9.png) and yea, it must be some kind of special PNG cuz I measured it out to be 80x75 but rendered incorrectly.
Sweet, looking forward to learning more about Android!
BTW, just finished looking over that Android page and is this the APKTool you're referring to?
Android Asset Packaging Tool
Thats one of them. Here is a post made by a guy who compiled them all together for anyone who wants them. Use just the tools and use that link I gave to learn about them. APKTOOL is something made by someone here on xda but I can't find his link.

I found the website: FWI use v1.3.1 as v1.3.2 has bugs
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...8j1-bcnOf1Rz8k9fA&sig2=4MkcxzG_ROaqAr4-tWwlGw
As stated, just changing the .png's is the starting way of theming. Just make sure you do a nandroid backup before you go around messing with anything.
When you get comfortable with that, the next step is to look into XML. XML is generally easy to learn but can be complicated at parts. I don't really know of a good starting guide to XML for android but I'll post one if I see it.
NinePatches (*.9.png) aren't as complicated as people think. Once you get the concept of it, they are actually pretty easy. I'm creating a guide for it when I have time. But the basic concept is:
The NinePatch tool ads a 1px border to an image.
The new border can be colored black (except the 4 corners).
The left and top borders defines the stretchable area.
The right and bottom borders defines where content is allowed.
Like I said, I'm making a guide to it which will explain it better and have pictures.

I tried the 9patch app and it's pretty easy to use (I have experience with Illustrator and Flash). However, when I replace the original 9path file w/the new one, it shows the 1 px border on my android. Also, it seems to scale it wrong. I attached an example of what I'm talking about. I measured the bkg of the power toggles to be 80x75, but on the Android, it shrinks the graphic and you can see the 1 pixel border?
Looking forward to that guide!

are you talking about the background of the icons or the entire power area?
the background of the icons look fine to me even zoomed in.
if your trying to make the entire power area be the caution image, then there is an xml edit involved in res/layout-hdpi-v4/status_bar_expanded.xml. ill give you the exact change you need if you cant figure it out.
just keep in mind that ninepatch will only stretch images, not repeat.

ahh ok, i wasn't sure how the background of that area worked. so there's a background png and a background png for each widget?
i found this png: stat_power_background.9.png
which other one is for the background of the entire thing?
about the extra 1 pixel showing, you can see on the sides of the background a black vertical line. on 9patch png's, is the 1 px border that defines the 9patch actually supposed to show? i think there might be something wrong with my 9patch png's.
also, if you look at the screen cap again, there's horizontal white space above and below the toggle widget bkg graphics. is there a way to make them larger so they cover the white space? seems like android likes to shrink them to that size (in the screen cap) no matter how tall the image is.

Well theres a solid color using a ARGB hex (for the background of the power control area) and a png for each icon background by default. you can set it up so there is an image for each.
the stat_power_background.9.png controls each icon (as you may have guessed already)
i'm not sure why the power control area isnt a solid color.
when in the ninepatch editor, you are supposed to see the black extra pixel but when you load it on your phone, they should dissappear. i honestly dont see them in the ss you provided.
can you send me the framework-res.apk you are working on so i can see if everything is set up correctly?

Theming question about backgrounds

when scrolling through running processes, manage applications, as I scroll the background changes from white to the theme color (blue)
I cannot find anywhere in the theme where that background is ( in this case blue)
guessing it has to be in framework res or system
Help? Pleas, its all I need for my theme to be complete

its MIUI and the Kobalt theme, I have no clue what overscroll effect means. But I would have to say no, with the knowledge I have.
Go to running processes,(or manage applications) the screen is white , as your finger scrolls the screen, it turns (in my case blue)
sorry I know all this sounds stupid, but I have about 80 hours into learning all this theming , Damn I learned how to get rid of everything on the status bar THAT was tough just cannot figure out where this background screen is
and yes I'll get some shots I am sure it will help
THANKS cannot wait to get this theme up. you will be the first I tell LOL
Are you on MIUI's latest build...2.3...? I could've answered off my head if you were on CM...just checking what MIUI build to dig into. Will also help other members reading this as well.

Yes it is. Btw I was a huge fan of CM, but damn the arguing and *****ing.....nightly builds (which I learned to skip several and wait) broke more than it fixed IMO
Still have it and still go back and forth, somewhat, , BUT I am really enjoying MIUI's "clean " UI
anyhow
tinkered alot with this one issue, and as you know, make one change, put it all together, and hmmmmm not that, so after about 20 of that I came here.
BTW gonna need somebody to test this when I am ready EVO4g, hard to believe I rooted my evo late March and I am at this point. My PC hacking days (mid 90's) have helped LOL
AND so you know I am not a kid, 55 and retired (33 years firefighter) everyone asked
whatcha gonna do with all that time.....LOL found it, for now
I could try it on my EVO for you if need be...I am on the same boat myself but with CM theme chooser. Lemme know once its ready. I will try dig into MIUI to see what I can find.
Fact about MIUI: the MIUI developers in China are implementing a new UI over the course of several weeks and some things are still buggy/half finished. This has been taking place since MIUI changed to gingerbread and anyone who's been running MIUI for a while remembers running apps in "compatibility mode" to make text appear. Graphics glitches have gotten better and better with each GB build of the ROM.
I have a theory: Since the devs began implementing these UI changes, I have also seen the effect that you are talking about, though it has decreased in frequency with every new build. It should also be noted that the color (which you described as blue) changes with whatever theme I'm running. I believe it to be a "glitch" in the UI due to lack of compatibility with certain devices or apps. The benefits of MIUI far outweigh such small glitches for me and I continue to run the ROM but that's the closest I can come to explaining the effect.

I believe your right, but my issue is......whether its the theme or the rom (your point) but hey its all fun , if you want I'll send you the theme also. I am digging this (70's) talk lol
see if I am right though, the MIUI stock rom is mostly orange, whereas the Kobalt is blue, BUT as you say ( follow me) change orange to blue and ???? I have changed several of Kobalts " backgrounds" (phone, toggles etc) to a plain blue. So maybe the stock MIUI rom is reading this light blue as a much darker blue. Make sense? What you posted does make sense to me.
Guess the only way to see all this is for me to send ya'll (southern) the theme
THANKS
Hmmm, upon re-reading the entire thread I feel as though I may have mis-interpreted your original question but yes, what you said makes perfect sense. Obviously some element of the themes is changing that background color but I'm not nearly advanced enough of a themer to begin to tell you where to look. If you were suggesting that you need someone else to run the "kobalt" theme to check for the same issue/see the color then I'm down to "dig" it, haha.

I agree what help, above and beyond, CM 3 pages of bashing I-phones HUH????
It comes from the cacheColorHint in the xml. a lot of apps have it that way but the background is the same color. do a search through the xml for cacheColorHint
Here it is
Well it is still not 100% done
so in a nutshell:
bootscreen is a re-do of cyanagen mod 7 (cannot find the original dev to give credit) took the text out and redid colors to blue
most everything else was hacked from kobalt blue
keyboard was from (i believe) honeybread theme
clock should not show up as I use a widget called make your own clock
a superb prog that puts it in text also allows battery % internal space used etc
mine is all blue to match the theme
revamped status bar as most of what was on it was redundant, use widgets on main screen ( again, make your own clock)
all I left was 3g data tx in green. Tried blue but I believe green catches ones eye quickly if no signal. bluetooth, and gps will show up in blue on status,( Side note, GPS was a ***** to do but IMO looks cool when it acquires the signal)
No wallpaper, IMO battery drain plus the blue on black looks good.
you will see I left some of Kobalts backscreens in , phone call and some others
toggle screen redone, also found a cool app that will show signal strength in dbm, no bars just text, IE. signal -98dbm, also can change to blue (this was a 4 hour project to find the one to fit the theme) it is called clarius signal. I use: one click widget, for brightness and volume. I use widget locker for my LS and have it all blue minimal text with Make your clock widget for time
Still left:
minor inconsistencies with colors ( backgrounds, static screens ETC) That is what started this thread LOL
SMS: could not find a way to alter Kobalts, gotta spend more time
Kobalts lock screen (easy to do just gotta get to it)
SO if any one wants to assist with getting more blue, jump right in, I only ask if you do, to zip it up and share. When it is all done we will share the credit
REMEMBER to change zip to mtz (for the noobs)
ENJOY ( I am at easily 100+ hours , trial and error as I go) Lots of PATIENCE
Damn just noticed 8 mb on zip upload....hmmmm gotta change game plan
This should work

Theme or ROM?

So I'm curious about looks vs. functionality
Each one of my little drawings here satisfy both.
First off, I apologize for being a retard and using cam scanner to make these images sideways (although they were right side up originally).
Seeing as I can't attach images directly from my phone onto this site, I had to email them to myself, download them and then re attach.
Also another retard thing, I made a home button (app) thing on both of them even though there is a physical one on the phone itself.
Have a look
Also clarify with me which is which (theme or ROM).
How hard is it to design/engineer this and actually have everything function properly?
Theme/ROM 1
Them/ROM
it looks like you want to pull the whole status bar to the bottom of your phone. i didnt think you could just move that stuff around. a Dev would would be able to give u a yes or no.
im leaning more towards a theme than a Rom. but you can only theme what the Rom has. and NO rom has that, that i know of. so its like a combination of both.
Those drawings appear to be a significant layout overhaul, a la Sense and Touchwiz
It would either be:
1) a full-blown ROM
2) A replacement for a number of system apps (but could be an add-on), at the very least the launcher and probably the lockscreen
More than just basic theming, that's for sure.
Well it certainly gives the phone a neater, "in my opinion more efficient" functionality.
The one with the radial app dial, that spins, (you guys probably could tell that already) can fit either 7 or 8 apps.
When you press the home button the phone app automatically aligns directly above the said home button (non physical assuming there are 7 apps not 8).
The apps that go on the radial thing-a-ma-jig are your primary apps.
However since that non-physical home button is not needed, then the phone would be in the center or perhaps you'd like the browser.
In any case whichever app you use most extensively (ie #1).
I certainly cannot do any of the ROM creating but I was hoping to spark interest with the ones who are able to do so with ease.
The one with the triangle side bars (next image) these have 1-3 icons on them, when you tap that icon the first time a box will come up over lapping everything else in the background (or with slight opacity) and that gives you more detail rather than just an icon.
I think it would be neat as hell if this was done.
So is it like, theme = aesthetics ; rom = function
In this case I'd like to do both.
Also the capability to assign any app in that 7-8 slot (radial) would also be nice.
Perhaps done through the command prompt.
This is a feature I picked up from a blackberry (ability to assign any icon to a specific design/theme).
Thanks for the interest, I'm going to try and fix the orientation.
Some of what you're looking to do (the home-dial concept) may be doable without any ROM development at all - after all, plenty of launchers are installable as apps and what you're describing there is a launcher concept.
Notification bar moving could be a lot harder though.
FYI I'm a kernel guy not an app developer, so I can't help you much other than say that I'm fairly certain one of the features you want to implement can be done as a launcher app for any ROM.
Alright alright, we're sifting through sonething here.
I have very little knowledge od 'kernel' 'launchable' 'rom' as far as developing them goes. Are there tutorials ? (search bar probably)
Thanks for your contributions
What about color (borders keys etc)
Nice drawings man

Hey thanks DevilDogAK
It's one thing to draw the idea by hand but to actually create it with code...
That's where the tires hit the road one might say.
I need to do some reading to get an idea of what I have to accomplish.
Thanks for the interest, as always it starts with a dream
I'll let you guys know whats up when I actually get to the point of dev
But team work goes a long way (hint hint hint)
sweet... great concept imo, & hey, cyanogen started with just a concept. wish i knew more to help you out, but we're with you in spirit nice drawings too lol

About the launcher comment, does having two mean more computing power needed to run the first and second launcher or can I just do one primary launcher?
If I can just move things around, what about putting some notification components under the wheel? Components such as the wifi toggle and the data image or perhaps the data and battery.
Anyone smart enough to do that probably isn't dicking around on XDA. You never know though.
Well... I'm here
Haha just kidding, I do wish somebody with some experience knowledge (ie developer of Serendipity etc... ) a man can dream... a man can dream.

[Q] Font colour location

Being new to android, I am slowly finding out how to customise the look and feel to suit me.
One thing I can't figure out is how to change the font colour in the attached photo, I'm not sure what this bit is called. But light blue is a terrible colour and I would like to change it to white or black if possible.
Can anyone tell me where this might be done? The OS is 4.2.2.
Hard
I am guessing by the huge amounts of replies, that changing the colour of this item is incredibly difficult and beyond the capabilities of most of the people on this forum.
anyone?
I must be in the wrong forum.
Well you could have saved some time and looked at it yourself. It is set in the system ui apk and defined in framework res. Depending on your device. See that's the thing it really depends on the rom and device. It is different for each. Not to mention there are plenty of tuts that would have told you the same thing.
thanks
Thanks, you couldn't point out one of these tuts could you? If I knew what the thing I want to change is called too, that would be helpful.
found it
It's called statusbar, and now I know it's name I can search for info on it.
Google returns a lot of results for 'thingy' or 'wotsit' but rarely the results you are looking for.
Conclusion
The thingy in the original post is called the status bar.
It is defined in /system/app/SystemUI.apk
Editing it requires a piece of software called apktool.
I now have white text instead of pale blue.
Thanks to zelendel for the clue.
All is now good.
As a slight aside, I found both a status_bar.xml and a gemini_status_bar.xml in SystemUI.apk and my phone appears to be using the gemini one. What practical use this is I don't know. The phone is a U51GT-C4B if anyone cares, it's as big as will fit in your jacket pocket without requiring the services of a tailor and makes using rdesktop so much easier.
It doesn't make your fingers any less fat, but it makes typing easier because the letters are further apart.
