Speaker Quality - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed right off the bat that the speaker on the back of the S5 sounds distorted and has too much treble and bass. It doesn't sound so great when listening to Youtube videos or Music. The S3 had a much better sounding speaker and a bit louder.
I was hoping there would be an App in the phone like on previous phones to control Speaker and Headphone sound settings and equalizers. However I have not been able to find anything like that in the S5 like MusicFx for Speaker.
Any idea what can be done for this or an App that can be used to control the sound settings for the speaker?

For some reason, Spotify, whatever EQ that it uses, affects all of my audio. I don't have any complaints about the speaker itself. Imo, it's the best speaker I've had.

[Q] saturated speakers?

When I have the volume set to the max and I receive a call, my ringtone is setup to play a song (hip hop) and it sounds terrible. When the bass hits come, it sounds like there is cotton balls covering the speakers. Like when people play their music too loud in their cars with crappy stock speakers, it sounds terrible. If I lower the volume, it sounds better, but I can barely hear the ringtone....
anyone else experiencing this?

You're experiencing over-excursion. These speakers weren't designed to handle bass. You can use an audio editing program to kick down the guilty frequencies (probably in the 200-400 Hz range).
Alternatively, you could try better music
Speakers of G2x are indeed sub-par but then again its a phone NOT a sub woofer. Lol

Back in the day, when phones all had crappy speakers, I chose to replace mine. It was a hack of a mod, but worked. Suppose if ringtones are that important, you could do this. Just make sure you get your impedance within 10 or so percent.
so i did some more "testing" and it sounds much much better while playing the same ringtone from the music player. However, when it plays as a ringtone, someone calls, then it sounds like crap.
Is there a different driver that plays ringtones vs plays music?

[Q] [I9003]How to Improve Audio Quality ?

As everyone knows, the audio quality of I9003 is not up to the mark, and this has been discussed various times.
Its real bad when compared to that of I9000 or of any iphone (personally tried).
If anyone knows about any custom rom, with improved sound or any other rom, or any method to improve the sound quality, please discuss.
As crazy as it sounds I'm actually quite satisfied with the audio quality of our phone (despite my constant whining a few months ago). Although I do agree that the audio quality of most idevices is better.
Anyway I'm currently using cranium rom and miui player on XXKPH. I honestly cant tell if this has any impact on audio quality but recently I've been a happy camper
Others will suggest the use of the equalizer app from the market. Its honestly the best EQ available and you wont be using those EQs that come with the music player anymore. It's free too
I suggest the Playerpro app as well since I've found it to have a louder volume overall and the UI is pretty neat.
And although this might sound redundant but I'm curious as to what headset your'e using. It always helps to have a reliable pair of quality head/earphones
I have the headphones that comes with the i9003, they are quite good. With DSP Manager it has a good quality sound, but Im having a problem with it, the phones speakers keep doing a static sound and drink the battery.
Ill try the equalizer app...

Oh man I suggest you get the Koss Portapros. These are the best sounding and most comfortable headphones I've ever used (and I've used alot). Their sound quality is comparable to headsets which are 3x times more expensive. Plus it comes with a no questions asked LIFETIME warranty- just pay for shipping.
I've been using these for a year and it hasn't failed me. Here in the Philippines it gets pretty hot so comfort is a big issue for me when it comes to headsets. With these on I forget I'm even wearing them
Here is the link for more info: http://www.amazon.com/Koss-PortaPro...P4ZH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1320488226&sr=8-1
For on ear headphones Ive the senheizer hd202. They are just great. But for listening to music while walking on street I use the in-ear samsung headphones.
The HD202's sound great on well driven devices but unfortunately thanks to its high resistance it just doesnt sound good on most portable devices.
If you want slightly inexpensive mic+ earphones combo like the stock earphones that came with the phone go for skullcandy riot!
They are better than the stock earphones and are not going to break the bank!
Also I want to know on sennheiser hd202 3.5 mm hack do you have 2 concentric black/gray rings or 3 rings?

There are 2 concentric rings.
Have you tried using those portable headphone amps from fiio? The E5 or the E6? I have the old E5 and it does improve the sound from my I9003. The earphones I have used that to my feeling had an improvement were the Denon reference C751 and the Sennheiser IE8 with silver cable. I have also used it on an AKG K420 and Sennheiser PX100 and I did feel some improvement on sound.
Guys what would you prefer
Equalizer app or the Music fx app.

Headphone quality sucks

Coming from the HTC one s, I think the headphone quality really sucks on this phone. Bass is not deep enough and the sound is just very "flat".. What do you guys think?

You came from a phone that had an emphasis on sound quality to a dev friendly phone that's almost bare bones software wise. It should have been obvious.
You maybe had that BS Beats software on the HTC? It's just an equalizer pushing bass and treble... Sound is good to me. Streaming Google play music via Bluetooth in my car right now and it sounds great.
I do admit that the HTC one s had a great sound chip which I believe is confirmed in tests and I did use that phone for several months.

that would normally be a good thing for in-ear headphones. in-ear headphones are ussually extremely bass heavy unless they are very expensive hifi models. but most of us actually like the exhagerated bass, so $50 headsets don't bother us. i tend to like cheaper heasets and haven't gone for etymotics or anything yet because sometimes low-fi brings certain character to the mix, ever try playing a guitar through a PA system? or some reference monitors? ever wonder why people go through such lengths to re-create the past in music? it's not because the tech was better in 1930-1969. well in some ways it actually was compared to low end stuff today, but the flaws were as important to the music as the talent. i don't have my phone yet, so i can't say the headset is good, but because you prefer the htc headset doesn't mean it's better (nor does anything i said mean it's worse). so why not just use the htc headset instead of complaining on the internet? or buy a set you like? dennon has a bullet proof set of in-ear for $35 and they are very ballanced for a cheap set. but if you like extreme bass i liked the sound of my $80 xeers, they were the best for bass heavy blues/rock stuff like the black keys or the white stripes. these were not ballanced at all but in a way that was pleasing to the ear.
edit, just realized it's about the sound output of the phone.... not even sure the nexus comes with a headset since mine is still in shipping..... ya know the beats software can be added to any phone right? i mean i can't confirm it workes at all but people were doing this mod back when the one x and whatever it's predecessor was came out and everyone insisted that by adding some of the libs and an app that it sounded so much better...

Yeah, must be because of the Beats.
It's because of the Equalizer settings in the One. Install Viper4Android on this phone and set it up and you'll see the clarity and quality is just amazing. Beats products are highly Equalized especially the Laptops and Phones. They're also setup to go under completely flat line Equalizer when disable to make it sound bad without the beats audio. This in turn makes those people who know nothing about audio think beats audio is a god send when in fact it's just a regular equalizer that sounds awesome enabled and worse disabled. If Viper4Android (See forum thread here on xda) doesn't work yet then use an equalizer app from the market and play around with it. You'll enjoy your sound a lot more.
There's something wrong with Google Play Music. It sounds horrible I installed Rocket Player and it sounds superb. Just needs more volume. My S4 still sounds better by a small margin though.

Nexus doesn't come with headphones. Which is fine with me since I have never used set of headphones packaged with a phone. Software can make a very big difference in sound quality. I usually use PowerAmp. I'm sure that PowerAmp combined with the headphones listed in my sig will be just fine on the N5. Now if they would just ship the damn thing.

No he came from a phone with Beats Audio out of the box.
Complaining about the sound quality of the N5 compared to the One S is like claiming that Sennheiser studio headphones are **** compared to Monster Beats studio headphones.
The N5 has stellar sound quality. What it sounds like without any equalizer presets activated is what your music is SUPPOSED to sound like. Want it to sound like your One S? Choose the bass booster equalizer preset and there you go.

Qualcomm DACs while not quite as good as Wolfsons are still great. I haven't had a real chance to listen to audio on my N5, but the audio on my GS4 was excellent.

Install an equalizer and adjust to taste. Like many have said before it's because the HTC one has built in "Beats" Equalizer which changes audio settings and frequencies.

This isn't true at all. The sound engineers have no idea what kind of DAC you'll be using, or what kind of speakers/headphones you'll be using. All DAC's have different sound signatures. All headphones/speakers have different sound signatures. They mix it to sound the way they want it based on the equipment they have in the studio. Unless you're using the same equipment then you're never going to hear it the way it was SUPPOSED to sound. Some EQ will almost always be required to approximate the intended sound.
Beats audio does tend to over emphasize the bass. However to say a flat eq is the way it is supposed to sound is not accurate since every device is going to have a different flat sound, as are every different type of headphone. Decent headphones along with decent software and a decent DAC will give sound quality that will satisfy most. I have no reason to believe that the N5 will fall short.

No, they mix it the way they want it to sound on various equipment. Checking how it sounds on various devices is part of the mixing and mastering. So no EQ is needed, in fact it will ruin the sound most of the time.

music quality through headphones

Guys, how is the music quality through the headphone jack especially with apps like Poweramp? I have some very good quality headphones so that part is taken care of.

It's pretty good. Im not a musician or anything but for the normal person wanting to enjoy his music it does a pretty well job even compared to my older galaxy s6
One thing I don't really like, since I listen to classical music that is quiet and has pauses is that there is constantly a small amount of noise than can be heard only if the music you are listening to is not loud or when there are pauses. When you are listening to standard pop/rock/ or any other loud music, this noise cannot be heard. I have had this problem with older cheap CD/MP3 players... Apart from that, the overal sound quality is very good though. I am using Sennheiser in-ear earphones.

Sound only comes from bottom speaker with ringtones?

Why does the sound only come from the bottom speaker on incoming calls or when notifications arrive? Listening to music, watching videos or playing games and the sound comes from both speaker. Also getting the feeling that the sound is much worse when it comes to ringtones/notifications.

Same here, ringtones and notifications sounds not only worse but quiet even on full volume.
But seriously why? You have 2 speakers and only choose to activate one of them with ringtones/notifications... Or is it some bug that will be fixed with an update?
I know this thread is a couple months old, but this bugs me too! Any updates on figuring this out? I'd like to utilize my stereo speakers to the fullest.

This is standard across many dual speaker devices. Only the bottom speaker is used for notifications and in call loudspeaker mode. We'll need someone to find a way to edit the root files that control this or create a mod that can be flashed in recovery. Until then, only one speaker will be used.
Anyone found a way to edit the build.prop files yet?
My guess is that it isn't the build.prop file, but a mixer XML file that needs editing. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge on how to do anything like that though.

To be fair, and I'm not sure why, this phone isn't the only device to suffer from this. For comparison, my wife's iPad Pro w/ 4 speakers works fine with media and apps. However, when using Facetime, it only outputs from 2 speakers. I'm not sure if, including the Pixel 2, this is an app design, a hardware design, or comms protocol limitation or something. I wish all sound came from both speakers and that both speakers were designed to be equal...I believe the Pixel 2 speakers are designed so that the top speaker is more Treble-focused and the bottom has a little more bass.

Yes, this is standard across most device manufacturers. I'm not sure why though as I've successfully modded an old Sony Xperia to have dual speaker output for loudspeaker calls.
