[Q] How to remove breath noise when equalizer is on ? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm not sure if I'm the only one with that issue but when I turn on equalizer, i got breath (IDK if that's the right word in english, it's "du souffle" in french, a "shhhhh" sound) at each blank in a song.
No problem at all when equalizer is off.
I tried several earphone, in-earphone and headphone but nothing change. I tried other music player instead of Google play music, same issue if equalizer is on.
I'm on stock and rooted, anyway to get that breath off with equalizer ?
Thanks.

Hiss?
Does the Same happen when eq is set flat?

Have you played around with the EQ settings? It might be specifically Bass Boost or Surround Sound which is causing it. For the record, there is no audible hiss when using EQ for me.

I think that it's hiss.
No hiss when EQ set at Flat, i'm not using Bass boost or surround.
It seems to be linked to 14kHz frequency. I got the same hiss with the n7 2013 when i play with the 14 kHz frequency.
No issue with my Cowon J3. Weird, so i won't use this frequency.
Thanks to all anyway.
Edit : Hiss even with EQ off at very low volume (so i will increase it because it tends to disappear at higher volume, EQ just accentuate the effect at low volume) on both N5 and N7. Bad thing from coming from a great MP3 player such as the J3 lol.
Thanks anyway

The Nexus 5 isn't the greatest audio player ever in terms of quality but there are things you can flash to make it louder. I believe there is even a ROM built by audiophiles.

Headphone amplifier app

Every couple months i pointlessly ask this question.
Is anyone aware of an app that can adjust the headphone amplifier levels?
I need the headphone amp to have REDUCED volume to eliminate static noise when listening to quiet music at night.
Voodoo sound does this perfectly, but only works on samsung phones.
Thanks in advance, even though lets face it it doesn't exist.

What exactly is causing this static noise??
DSP manager should be what you are looking for. Set the equalizer in the headphone settings to "custom" then reduce the levels across all the bands. If it is high pitched static you may just want to reduce the high frequencies
EDIT: Search the forums for "Dsp manager" to find the download link. Id post it but cant...

I appreciate your reponse but its not a solution. If you listen to quiet music at night like classical music, you will hear a static. Its a cheap headphone amp in the phone. Think about a guitar amp turned up too loud. You would hear the amp clearly when the guitar isn't playing. Some phones are worse than others in this regard. Turning the headphone amp down and the media volume UP reduces static noise and allows the media volume to be high.
Turning the eq down may help but at the cost of good sound quality. I have tried it.
And finally, here is the answer. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teamkang.fauxsound
I had the same problem to with white noise static coming in my low impedance in ear phones.
I edited these 2 files and lowered the gain to 48 for headset. I think by default its on 55.
They are in /system/etc
Files
TPA2051_CFG.csv
TPA2051_CFG_XC.csv
Edit and reboot. Make copies before edit just in case.

Pandora

The kick drum in some songs in Pandora sounds really ugly. It sounds like it would if your headphones were broken, but I am sure my headphones are fine. I am not an audio expert so I do not know the technical term (fart noise maybe?). It is really annoying and it ruins the songs, especially songs with loud kick drums (Deadmau5). Does anyone else have this problem? It happened on every ROM I've used.
Negative. What version of Pandora are you using? I have the "Red Unlimited" app installed on mine and I use Smart Android's Equalizer application.

Are you using Pandora One?
DeadMau5 on mine actually had the same broken sound you're describing. It's just a lot of bass that has to do with the quality of the file. After I upgraded to Pandora One, it went away because of the higher bitrate. Now it makes the same noise if I turn it up super loud. If you don't have Pandora one, just do the 1 day trial and go onto your phone and select High Quality under settings to see if that helps.

App for louder music sound! -Much Louder-..

I was searching all over the play store for a way to boost the music sound and nothing was working in fact it would make the sound worse and lower than it already was and this is another thing we can't change without root permissions but luckily I found PowerAmp and this app literally made the music almost 50% louder so if you like your music louder I suggest you give it a shot and it can easily be found on the play store! Make sure you learn to use the equalizer and pre amp features because it makes it extremely loud but if you go into the settings and turn on the gain levels you can make it so loud that it's going to hurt your ears so just a warning lol.. Google Play Store PowerAmp!
My issue is not so much the speaker but the ear piece for calls. It just seems very low. I have issues hearing everyone unless it is cranked.... and it is still not loud enough.
Does PowerAmp affect the ear speaker too?
Update: I am guessing not since this is a "music player"

No this is only when you're playing music or videos through the PowerAmp player. Have you tried adjusting the hearing settings in settings then accessibility and Hearing? See if that may help or you can go through Settings then Sounds and Vibration and tap Sound Quality And effects and go through the entire process.

What are you trying to say? Lol..
It should be noted that the lower the bitrate of the audio file being played, the lower you will be able to increase the pre-amp level before getting massive distortion. I bought PowerAmp long ago and have used it almost exclusively, and the pre-amp I generally set pretty high, but most of my audio is FLAC with some 320WMA mixed in and the rare 192 and lower for rare stuff I had to rip from Youtube or other less than ideal sources. With FLAC files you can boost the pre-amp quite high and lot lose any quality or introduce any distortion. Using my Sony MDR-XB500 headphones and FLAC files, and the PowerAmp pre-amp, the audio levels easily get to painful/damaging-to-your-ears levels without distortion, but "standard" bitrate music (192kbps-ish) starts to distort pretty low on the pre-amp.

Volumen on headphones too low

Hi!
1º Sorry my English. I try to explain but maybe i don't use the best words.
I don't know if is only my phone or not.
The volume on headphones is too low, I try with originals and others headphones (apple, beats, sony...) via bluetooth , USBC, USBC-Converter... and is horrible
I don't want to have a disco on my heads, :silly: but yes, I want to listen my music a few strong as a others phones.
Maybe is a limitation on Europe, because the quality of sound is so good, but the volumen... Meh
Thanks!!!
I read on theverge and mashable that there is suppose to be a DAC/AMP coming as an accesory. But so far I have only seen the freebuds.... My Galaxy S8 is certainly louder than P20....The Quality itself seems good though.
The only trick I know is too enable Dolby Atmos, then go to Music profile, and then "off" then you get a little more loudness and a graphical EQ that is flat. I think that should be a profile without DSP stuff going on. But most natural to me sounds with Dolby atmos disabled. But then it really struggles with volume.
Spotify has this option for example so you can set it up I think. Personally I dont need more volume. Usually using a bit more than the half of the bar.
It is a bit quieter than other phones I used but definitely not too quiet. Maybe you should go check your hearing ?
In ear headphones can be really damaging to hearing when listening on louder volumes.

Your concern is right, vol are very low even with 3rd party headphones , average volume I have to set is around 60-70% always
volume is low when there are too much noise in the background. maybe bcoz of the noise cancellation (or maybe you have ear problem). im using both apple earbuds and the huawei earphones, Pulsar+ player with in-app EQ manually adjusted + Dolby Atmos EQ adjusted to music. volume is too loud for me at 60%, my base %%% for me even in my ASUS Zenfone 5

I noticed this problem too with the original earphones and my Honor monster earphones connected with the headphone adapter. But, weirdly, the sound from my Huawei bluetooth earphones is louder!
low volume on P20 pro bluetooth
I had the same problem. I found the app Volume booster GOODEV. With that app, you will be able to boost the sound much.
Had the same issue! Realized its the cheap connector included swapped for this:
Belkertech Nylon Braided Type C to 3.5mm Audio Microphone Female
Good increase in volume. Hope that helps someone.
For Spotify what can help is to uncheck te option for same volume for all songs
fixed
My wife's mate 20 pro have similar low volume issue with her bluetooth headset and I did this to resolve the issue.
You are going to need to change the Bluethooth audio codec in the "developer options"
You'll need to search for how to get into the developer options on the internet because I can't link as a new user.
I believe you'll need your bluetooth headset connected before you can make any changes otherwise the option to change will be greyed out.
Basically I changed the Bluetooth Audio codec from ACC (which seems to be the default) to SBC. After this, the max volume dramatically improved.
For some reason, options like
Bluetooth Audio Sample Range, Bluetooth Audio Bits Per sample, Bluetooth Audio Channel Mode, Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec are greyed out even when the bluetooth headset is connected while I checked on another android phone that these are options you can actually play with.
I wanted to change these to see if it'll actually improve bluetooth audio. Either way, I'm happy that changing this works. Let me know if it help for you guys as well?
Settings -> Sounds -> Dolby atmos -> pick "music" -> adjust all levers in the equaliser at the bottom of the screen to +x dB. I maxed out all levers to +12 dB. And voila you've got more volume without changing any relation between different frequencies.

Thanks a million m8! Works for me. Now I can't have volume much above 60% without being uncomfortably loud.
P.S. had to reboot my P30 Pro after changing the codec setting to SBC before the new setting was activated.
Most things depend on what headphones you are using the stock Huawei headphones are so-so... not really worth it either Apple.. When I plugged in my Sennheiser the sound was x2 louder, after that I also got Huawei AM61 sports bluetooth headphones which are great as well. Pay attention to OM as well it is not recommended to use more than 32 OM on a phone without an amplifier.

Go into Developers Mode, then switch on 'Bluetooth absolute volume', works a treat, I don't struggle to hear my music over the ambient noise of the gym now!

Hi bro! Does it also work with wired headphones? At first glance I don't think so. Is there no solution for those who use wired headphones?

I don't think so, no. My friend said he did something similar with the USB-C wired connection, I'll ask him tomorrow.

Zenfone 6 audio sounds different from everything else?

I'm posting this based on my testing on various sources that the ZF6 sounds with my 3.5mm earphones sound different than my laptop, desktop, and galaxy S7. Desktop, laptop and my S7 sound identical.
Any rock song seem to be overly muffled on the ZF6 on my 3.5mm earphones and I can't seem to fix it. I have tried testing with various settings in AudioWizard and also tried disablling it to no avail.
Not sure if it was like this in Android 9 and also in Android 10.
Anyone else notice this?
I don't have any problem with audio. Have you tried another media player? I use Poweramp.

Tried different media player, youtube, twitch. Everything sounds off on the ZF6 compared to my mentioned examples.
Can you elaborate more about what exactly makes it sound off? Weird frequency response, some kind of sound effect, distortions/cracks? I will try to compare my phone once more.

Sorry, English is not my first language.
As far as as describing the problem, there's no inherent "problem" with the sound per se, but most songs I listen to on a daily basis sounds very different and off in a really bad way. I've disabled AudioWizard, and also tweaked with the equalizer, bass, treble in AudioWizard and nothing.
I've kept my best in keeping everything same for testing. Like, listening to the same song, using the same earphones, and pretty much tried my best in keeping things in stock settings and same across my laptop, desktop, s7 and zf6 as best as I could.
I think there's some funky equalizer setting that is muffling certain "tones" in music and I can't access it or something. I have no idea.
Not rooted/locked bootloader if that makes any difference. No funky app or add-on that could possibly affect this.
Edit: try listening to this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3x8geNo31yg
the first 30 seconds sounds so obviously different to me. If this is not the case for you then something is wrong with my zf6 whether by some setting or defective
I can't hear any significant difference between my Zenfone 6 and a Acer Laptop without EQs. The music is quite old and not a high quality one but other than that everything plays fine.
Hi,
I do not own a Zenfone 6 but did own a Zenfone 5 last year and listened to a lot of music. I was coming from an HTC 10(the brand I went back to).
I did experience issues with the sound quality on the Zenfone 5 both on the external speaker and through headphones. The problem being an eq setting (which I had no power over) that lowers automatically the volume when low frequencies (any kind of percussions or beats) played fom either a music player or streaming app. The result was a "wavy" sound where volume fluctuated in a noticeable way, plunging down when low frequencies kicked in (I guess it's a way to stay under a certain maximum dB level?). The rest of the frequencies sounded muffled and blended together. Basically there wasn't a good sound separation even through the headphone jack.
No setting on AudioWizard could solve the issue and it was widely reported on the ZenTalk forums.
I remember a software update which claimed to solve the problem but simply ended rising the max volume through the jack, mantaining the sound distortion as it was. I found no solution whatsoever and switched brand.
I don't know if this problem changed on the 6 but what you describe sounds to me almost exactly what I experienced on the Zenfone 5.
It sounds like there was an output limiter of some kind which was altering the sound to avoid speaker distortion. I didn't notice this on my Zenfone 6. I've never had an Asus before though.
I had several problems with the audio from the 3.5 jack after updating to andoid 10, especially with the fm radio. I had to downgrade to android 9 to fix it.
