If you are s-off you can simply download the RUU and put it on your ext sdcard and then follow the instructions in the post. If you are not s-off just download a custom rom to your ext card and flash it in twrp.

There's a thread in the development by dotthat with the RUU for our phone. Just follow his directions exactly and you'll be back to out of the box fresh but still s-off.

Personally, I would just flash CleanROM. It's a super stable and slick cleaned up stock rom by an awesome dev.

After I restore it back to stock with RUU, will I have to redo root, s-off and twrp recovery? or will everything stay the same and I will just have to add Roms back on

You will keep root. I have an ruu mode TWRP posted there to for your convenience. Alternatively you could flash TWRP and go to advanced and select adb sideload. You can then adb side load a rom to your device

Bootloop issue

I am having issues after i flashed this Stock AT&T Deodexed JB 4.1.1 | Official AT&T 3.18.502.6 Update Rom..After htc logo at start up all i get is a blank screen and nothing else.S-off,unlocked bootloader & using TWRP here..
Need help as i am clueless right now :crying:
PS:Using At&t One x...Coming from a Nexus..Never thought that i'll get into this much trouble
Versions of TWRP after 2.3 have been known to be problematic. I'd try to install TWRP 2.3, or the official CWM.
So you mean to say that i should try 2.3 TWRP and try to flash the Rom again?
Can i run RUU after relocking the bootloader?
My PC can detect the phone in fastboot mode..

Precisely. What version of TWRP are you using currently? If its the latest (2.5.0.0), I'll bet this is the problem.
TWRP 2.3 seems to be the most stable version. I believe 2.3.1.1 is what you want. If you look through the TWRP thread, there are some folks that have posted links to this older version.

HTC security can be a pain. But they aren't the only manufacturer with security measures. Every Android device is different. Don't blame the device. Learn, adapt and conquer.
If you have s-off you should be able to flash RUUs to your heart's content, recovery has nothing to do with it. You can try the other twrp by flashing it in fastboot then try flashing the rom again, or try another rom after transferring it in recovery

I think OP is asking about RUU as an alternative, just to get the phone back up and running again; not as a way to install the stock rooted ROM he linked.
Ok guys thanks for the suggestions...
Yeah i was using TWRP 2.5.0.0...
I had no other choice but to go for RUU...But first i did relock the bootloader & then went for the RUU..
Whole process went smoothly & i got the phone booted up fine..Today i learnt a lesson..Never ever flash anything without doing a backup first..
Yeah i know..I had Desire HD once & i dont wanna think about how i rooted it lol.& today i got stuck in another Htc device..Well it was my mistake in the first place because i forgot to take a backup of stock Rom..
Anyways i wana ask something else now..i used fastboot oem lock command to relock the bootloader..Now how to unlock it again?
htcdev method?I already have the Unlock_code file..
Also now can i flash 4.1.1 RUU this time?Right now i am on 4.0.4..
Thanks guys once again..All of you really were of great help..
Okay i can unlock it again using this command 'fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin'

I don't recall the exact syntax. But you can reuse the unlock token, with the same fastboot command you unlocked with originally.

Hi,
is that you get the update notification?
For me (i did'nt have the notification), I did it: being in stock 4.2.1 ROM, s-off, recovery custom, and root, so I changed cid with the fastboot command: fastboot oem writecid HTC__032 (HTC__032 = East Europe, me I had a French HTC__203 cid). Then reflash version 4.1.2 of stock recovery, reboot the phone, check the update, and normally you could do it!
For finalize, back in the bootloader to restore your original cid and reflash a custom recovery if you want !
Good luck!
Well i got the update notification but i cant update to 4.2 because i dont know how to restore the stock recovery. if its any help im running 4.1.2 and im on cricket which is the PLCCL variant

Download the OTA.zip, you'll find it in download folder.
Copy it to your PC. Inside the OTA.zip you'll find a firmware.zip, unzip this on your PC.
Then open the firmware.zip and you will find a recovery.img inside. Unzip this recovery.img.
Now put the recovery.img into your fastboot folder (in your PC) and flash it with the cmd:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If all went well, flash back cwm recovery, make a backup and upload it for us

if you're cricket than do this
first thing you need to do is flash a working clockworkmod recovery
then download this rar file and extract it somewhere and place it in your CWM restore directory
https://db.tt/C59wTTqK
once it's restored
place this file on the root of your sdcard and reboot into your bootloader,
it will search and find it just follow the directions on your screen to apply it. then reboot into your OS and except all further updates

fastboot oem rebootRUU => ok

What should i do now?
Thanks for reading and help me pls!!!!
Ok, first mistake is that you thought you needed to be rooted to flash the Viper ROM, you don't. All you need is an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery, which you had. You were probably stuck in the bootloader because you forgot to flash the boot.img from the ROM zip with fastboot, you need to do this because you're s-on.
The next mistake you made was attempting to flash an OTA. I don't know what made you think that you could do that but it definitely wasn't found in this forum (or anywhere for that matter). An OTA is only a partial OS, it relies on the correct stock OS to already be installed on the device to build on top of to update the existing OS. It failed for obvious reasons.
Unlock your bootloader again, flash a custom recovery again, and flash the ROM again. Make sure you flash the boot.img this time and it should boot right up. I'd strongly recommend you read the Evita FAQ thread and the How-To Guide For Beginners thread in my signature. Diving into modifying your device without the proper level of knowledge is a really bad idea.

Did you perform a factory reset from the bootloader at some point? If so you've corrupted your sd card, you should never perform a factory reset from the bootloader. If this is the case you'll need to use TWRP to wipe your sd card, then you should be able to mount it to Windows and use Windows Explorer to format. Once this is done you can for a ROM across again.
Exactly which build of Viper did you try to flash? What's the exact filename? Did you check the md5 before flashing?

yes, i did it more than once, now it's fixed, but when i mount it to Windows using TWRP, nothing happen, so i can't format it. and the same things when i tried to sideload. But in fastboot mode, it usual.

Yes, you can flash a custom Rom without root. He already answered that. I strongly recommend reading up on your device before flashing anything else. I'd suggest starting with getting your phone s-off.

[Q] OTAs, root/s-off, and SD card

So I've had the m8 for a little over a month, and love sense to the point that I haven't really had a reason to root yet. I'm on android 4.4.2 software number 1.12.605.11, and have just been ignoring the OTA nag. First off, is s-off/root possible with what I'm on now? And if I take the OTA, will s-off be possible? Also, I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the microSD. Thanks!
You can use weak sauce to root, then firewater to soff, then uninstall weak sauce root, and install twrp, then flash SuperSU zip to root. Then just flash an up to date rom. Clean rom is real nice if you wanna stay stock, just lose the bloat. I love it. Then you can always fastboot flash to the newest firmware after all of that.

You can just use the 4.4.3 ruu and do the OTA, then your firmware is done all in 1 shot
can someone upload a 4.4.4 system dump? or point me to one if someone has already? thanks!
I have looked around and found all kinds of different answers so can someone here help me out a bit?
I got the phone when it first came out, have S-OFF, root, TWRP custom recovery but have version 4.4.2 still installed with everything being left pretty much stock. I would prefer to keep things pretty much stock so what would I need to do to update to 4.4.4? Do I need to get 4.4.3 first? Do I need to flash stock recovery first before doing anything? Anything with firmware or radios?

Reasonable enough, sorry if this is another dumb question but I havent been paying much attention to these boards since I rooted, I see that recent phones require Sunshine to root, is that because of the firewater method being patched via a software update (4.4.3?) or some other manufacturer change that I shouldnt be concerned with if the old root method already works for me?

Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159 and just flash the 4.4.3 with not boot img. YOu dont need to flash the recovery to accept ota's. YOu can just flash this and you will get the updated radios and h boot.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723159
Downloaded OTA and updated, they added file manager and flashlight back ~!

Reasonable enough, sorry if this is another dumb question but I havent been paying much attention to these boards since I rooted, I see that recent phones require Sunshine to root, is that because of the firewater method being patched via a software update (4.4.3?) or some other manufacturer change that I shouldnt be concerned with if the old root method already works for me?

nope, if your already SOFF, you will stay SOFF. might break your root, but all you need to do is reinstall supersu when you put twrp back on
