[q] tempered glass query - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just recieved this item: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111343716...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649.
This is the first time that i've used a glasS screen protector and i have noticed that there's no cut out for the front facing camera.
IS THIS OKAY? I contacted the seller and his reply was 'the glass is transparent so it doesn't need a cutout'?!
I'VE PUT A COUPLE OF PICS UP. Any advice is greatly appreciated

The glass is transparent. It doesn't need to be cut out.

What are you going to do if we say it will affect the crappy front camera a little? Are you going to return it?

it 'sok..
i'm using a spigen tempered glass on mine, it doesn't have a cut out for the cam, just the earpiece (prefer this, it makes the tempered glass MORESO transparent) .. & the front facing camera snaps as normal..

i got the MIME feather and it doesnt have a cutout for camera
it did have one for earpiece...
BUT problems started there... around that cutout little pieces chipped...
now around the glass, some chips have come off, cracks are now running around the phone...
for 3 months of regular use, and never being dropped in any way, i find it very poor quality
what i am getting to is.. if a good glass screen protector suffered this much damage, expect the no brand to also do it

No cutout for the camera on my glass protector either. No problems using the camera at all - you'll be fine.

I have the mime ghost, and the only cutoff whatsoever is the speaker. Zero issues.

Martin Fields Screen (+ Rear) Protector

Having used Martin Field Screen protectors in the past on all sorts of gear I jumped on them as soon as they became available for the N4. I now have both front and rear fitted and hears what I think.
As usual the material used is very good. Scratch resistant, smooth and doesn't seem to degrade the image at all.
Firstly, the rear protector. This comes with a cut-out for the flash but not the camera. I don't know whether this will really be a problem in practice as I haven't had time to take many photo's with it on yet.
Otherwise, the dimensional fit on the rear protector is great and you barely tell it is there.
Secondly, the front protector. As with other protectors I have tried (Terrapin), width wise this matches the active screen area so you can feel a slight ridge when you swipe on from the edge. Not really a problem in reality.
However the N4 screen, like the GNex before it has a slight roll off at the top and bottom which means that you cant really get edge to edge coverage with this sort of protector. What you have to live with is a slight unprotected border.
In this respect, the Martin Fields protector is a little too large top to bottom and when fitted doesn't sit flush with the screen for an approx 1mm along the top and bottom. You can't really see it face on but it will allow dust and fibres to work in if you keep it in your pocket.
I've emailed Martin Fields about it and they have requested some photo's so they can look into possible revising it. I've sent these to them now and I'll update when I get a further response.

As MF may do something about the fit yet. I don't want to post pics of the issue as it would be bad publicity for them. Let's see what the come back with first, I'm confident that they will sort it out.
A pic of the back of the phone wouldn't help either, you really can't tell it is there.
I LOVE Martin Fields! Glad that it finally came out for the N4, but I already jumped on the too good to pass up 50% deal for ZAGGs. Couldn't wait any longer to leave my device unprotected.
Please update whenever you hear back from them
and here's the link for anyone who wants to order: http://www.martinfields.com/US/MFOP-GoogleNexus4
I bought these as well, pretty pleased with them, it's true that height wise it doesn't quite reach to the bottom (1mm short), it's not noticeable if you have a case that covers it. Certainly it isn't as bad as Terrapin, those were like half a cm short. The back protector is pretty much perfect, the cutouts align perfectly, you also get a separate protector for the flash.
Should also mention this does not come with a proximity sensor cutout, however, it works absolutely fine. I asked them before buying it and they assured me it would work.
If you're in the UK you can get these from a few online shops for around ~£16 so pretty decent.
at this price.. it's basically tempered glass price. With that said, anyone experienced both and do a quick compare/contrast?
There aren't any tempered glass protectors out yet are there? Wouldn't say it's in the same price range as tempered glass, you have to remember you get front and back.
i was just talking about comparing in general with devices that already has these on before and tempered. Right now, there aren't any tempered glass available yet, pre-order only.. There will be more tempered glass and once it's widely available, it will be around $20 or cheaper.

IMO, I think they need to be a bit shorter height wise so the edges adhere to the screen and don't sit proud. I don't think any dry application protectors would ever give complete edge to edge fit, they would always lift at the extremes due to the curvature.
I too have used Martin Fields screen protectors in the past & thought they were fantastic! I'm not that impressed with the fit of this one though.
I've fitted the Skinomi, which is a 'wet apply' one. It completely covers the screen, & was real easy to apply. So far it feels fine to use too.

Hi Chris,
Just got my Nexus 4... finally...
Bought a wet screen protector that I will probably not apply.
Used Martin Field's before and I now I wonder if you received any news from them and how is everything going after using it for 6-7 weeks.
Any problems with the camera being covered?
Looking forward to your feedback.

Camera Lens Protector

Just picked up the edge two days ago and I love it so far. Got the Skinomi screen protector on the way but does anybody feel the need to cover the camera lens on the back? I know putting on a protector would affect image quality a bit but having it sit on the lens all the time is nerve wrecking.
Also, any idea where to get one? I searched the forums and google but got nothing.
I once owned the HTC One m8, so I know about needing a cover, it was prone to scratches. I just use the extra one I had from it.
I do not know about yours but my AT&T came with a sticker like protection attached. I hate it though. Do not know how I shall remove it.
Hey guys,
Let me first start off with the post before me. Before using your phone you should remove all plastic film from the phone. This includes the front film that covers the phones screen and the plastic square film that covers the camera glass on the back of your phone. I used my fingernails and slowly removed the plastic film on the camera lens from the back of the phone. I noticed after removing the film from the camera on the back, the picture and video quality remains the same, this is due to a cut out in the middle of the square plastic film on the camera on the back of the phone. In conclusion, it doesn't affect quality of any sort on my opinion, but in my personal opinion it looks better without it. Personally, I didn't notice the film on the camera lens until after a week or two of usage. It got steamy and hot in the ktichen and i was taking pictures of food and I noticed air bubbles on the lens... The end.
Lets get back on topic, you can skip the top portion, but that might be too late. Alright if your looking for a camera lens protector for your Edge. I recommend Rasta Banana protector for the Note Edge.
I apologize, since. I'm a new user I cannot post links in my posts yet. You can find it by going to Google and typing "Rasta Banana Note Edge", and you will see it.
If your looking for only a camera lens screen protector only then this is not for you. The package includes a full screen protector for the front of the Edge and its dry apply that covers the whole screen including the Edge screen. Also in the package is the camera lens screen protector too.
I ordered mines today and it's $18 for the package and $3 shipping, and it takes about 7-20 days for delivery for us US buyers.
I'll let you guys know how the screen protector works and the camera lens protector works when it arrives.
Thanks for reading.

Glass screen protector affecting proximity sensor

Hi,
I ordered a nilkin glass protector and everything seemed good, but i started experiencing a problem with the proximity sensor. With the glass protector on it would always detect it as being covered, so when i started a call the screen would turn off and wouldn't turn on when i backed away from the ear and i had to press the home button and the end the call.
I entered in the test menu(#*0*#) and the results confirmed that the sensor always "thought" that it was covered. I ended up removing it but i would like to add the extra protection to the glass.
The glass protector is a full front(except a bit on the speaker) glass protector, similar to the one from zagg, but i don't see many people reporting this issue, with any brand( even reviews from the nilkin glass).
Could it be an issue with the screen protector itself or a problem with the sensor?
Is there a workaround for it?
Thanks!

Tried that test with a generic glass screen protector and the prox sensor worked OK.
I don't have a generic film screen protector to test =/ I had the one that came with the phone for a while and it worked fine but that one had a big cutout for the sensors and this one didn't. I'm thinking I got a defective one with the cutout not big enough because from pictures on the website it did had a bigger cutout for the sensors.
I contacted the seller and he is sending me a new one, let's see.
I just didn't think that having that thin glass in front of it would make that much difference, especially since it's transparent and I thought the proximity sensor measured light and that wouldn't make a difference
This is not a normal problem, but yes one that does exist. I haven't handled many personally, the reps in the front just swap them out. I do believe there was one instance where we put multiple ones on the same phone and it kept having issues. No issue without the glass, put the glass on, sensor didn't work.
I guess the actual sensor can't be covered, even if its a layer of thin transparent glass and needs those cutouts free. I only recently realized that(my previous s3 isn't that picky, it has a a thick glass protector on it now and the sensor still works well) but the seller sent me a new one and im hopping the one i got first just had some kind of production problem with the wrong cutouts because from the photos i have seen online from the product (its a nilkin amazing h+ btw) it shows the cutouts on that area and i really need a screen protector.

Nexus 6P Plastic Screen protector with proximity cut outs

Can somebody point out a plastic (wet application) screen protector that is confirmed to have a proximity sensor cutout?
I have looked at amazon and while some of the product photos do show the cut out but people are still complaining about it being absent on the actual product.
I bought a supershieldz TGSP and one it was missing the cutouts and two it didn't fit my phone due to dent on the screen. So I ordered IQ shield wet application SP since it showed cutouts in product photos but after when I received it, it was also missing the cutouts.
any help is appreciated.
Here Skinomi has confirmed it has proximity cut-outs and design has been updated as of lately so give it a go:

The Ringke screen protector I received with their fusion case came with the proximity sensor cutouts.
Seconding the Skinomi. I have it on my 6p and it's working great.
I have a plastic (dry application) screen protector with no proximity sensor cutout and I have no issues.
I thought the non glass screen protectors did not need the cutout
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Spigen Crystal Film is the best plastic one you will find and yes it has the proper cutouts. I always keep them as a backup in case i break my TGSP or decide to remove it because dirt gets under it. I've used the Spigen plastic ones for a while on my Nexus 6 because no TGSP would fit for the first 6months i had it.
I can confirm the Skinomi® TechSkin - Huawei Nexus 6P Screen Protector does have the cutout. I received a revised version in the mail right after my first one shipped. I am using the original one without the cutout and it works just fine. I think people that were *****ing are clueless or were using the glass protectors. I've had a Skinomi on my Nexus 5 for 2 years and the proximity sensors were covered on it and I never once had a problem.
I have a Mr Shields film without cut out. -Screen goes blank.

How did you get Mr Shield to send you replacements? While mine works, I don't like the big camera cutout. It looks like the revised version has a circular camera cutout.

X2 on this!
I don't even mess with TGSP's anymore simply because of the added cost and the Spigen Crystal Film is so good. Plus the Spigen Crystal Film comes three in a pack. If you mess one up you have spares on hand. I can't tell any difference between the Spigen Crystal Film and glass on the phone!
haven't used a screen protector in years. Does the lack of a cutout for the front facing camera on the Spigen screen protector affect the camera at all?
anyone know if a screen protector fitting only the touchscreen portion? im using a skin (slickwrap) and dont want to apply a protector over the skin... yet. much rather have just one layer instead of a double layer here and single layer there.

The screen is supposed to go black when you put the phone up to your face and come on when you remove the phone from your face. Are you saying that your screen goes black instantly when not even next to your face?

Yep. That's exactly the case. I get a brief moment to answer or make the calls but once connected, screen goes black.
Seems this has been an issue with the N6 also since Marshmallow was introduced.

Interesting. I noticed that Spigen also modified the Nexus 5 screen protector on the replacement I just received and it has a cutout for the proximity sensor now too. I wonder if there are slight differences in the sensitivity of them causing issues for some but not others? Your screen isn't scuffed up where the proximity sensors are is it?

Your guess is as good as mine.
My 1 week old N6P isn't scuffed up at all.
I have a Skinomi Non Proximity cutout protector - which I ordered on 11/02 but they have since redesigned a cutout newer version.
That said, it's still gnaws at me that the N6 guys have the same issue & this just started getting louder after M6.0 was released.
I do like the non-cutout protectors better & have never had this issue prior with any other phone.
But if it's hardware or software related - either way wish Google would issue a guidance.

IMAK Glass screen protector

I just received my IMAK glass screen protector. Purchased this on AliExpress. Here are some photos of it and how I installed it. I used the 3 stickers to make a hinge after it's positioned correctly. That way I just have to remove the backing and then stick it. I'll just seperate my review into pros and cons.
Pros:
-The screen protector fits nicely. I chose this one because it has the little speaker cut out on top.
-It feels good because it is glass.
-It protects the screen well because it is glass.
Cons:
-It is glass so it has some thickness to it.
-Holds fingerprints more than screen itself
-It has a little orange peel so it's not crystal clear. You can see in the picture of the reflection of the light that it looks a little muddy instead of mirror like.
Overall, it's good for the price, but not perfect. Personally I'm back and forth between glass and film screen protectors. I'll give this a try for a few weeks and then make a final decision.

Perfect, I know what I have to do when my phone and Nillkin protector arrive.
Thanks for sharing.
That is a lot nicer than the Riffue Tempered Glass screen protector I bought on Amazon. This one is thin and has a good height but is several mm too narrow, it doesn't even cover the LCD display let alone the entire screen/glass.
the one i order covers like half of the screen lmao wtf
just ordered one like yours.
I had one similar too this, but the dust collected over front camera under the glass.
It has some glue on it, does this IMAK one used static?
Here is a link to the one i bought.
I tried many different ones but for me this is the best.
The coating is very good against fingerprints. It fits perfect on the screen.
The sides of the screen are a little bit curved down which is good for the dust.

I agree, this is the best screenprotector i have ever bought. It fits perfect and the coating feels the same as on the original screen :good::good:
Just wanted to echo everyone else about how great the Imak full coverage screen protector is. I went through four different screen protectors so far (unknown brand thin plastic one, MOFI tempered glass, another MOFI tempered glass, and finally the IMAK full coverage)
The thin plastic one came bundled with the phone and would scratch if you so much as raised your voice at it. Placed it on just as a temporary protector while waiting for the others to come from Aliexpress. It just barely covered the display and left about 1.5mm of space on the edges. The phone was accidentally smacked out of my hand once and landed on a sandy floor face down, which I later discovered upon removal of the screen protector had caused a small chip on the screen near the edge, so the protector might have absorbed some of the impact.
The first MOFI tempered glass I got was a "full coverage" one, but it arrived with notches cut out on the bottom where the proximity sensor and front camera are. The worst thing about this one was that it only had adhesive on the edges, so there was a really distracting and noticeable rainbow effect (newton rings) in the middle of the screen.
The second MOFI tempered glass was also full coverage, and this time it didn't have notches at the bottom, just a hole cutout where the proximity sensor is located. The adhesive type was the same as the previous one, edge only, resulting in the newton ring effect. It also mysteriously cracked for no reason.
The one I have on currently is the IMAK full coverage screen protector. Indisputably the best out of all of them, the protector fits exactly over the entire front glass, and instead of cutout holes at the bottom, the chin at the bottom is fully glass, blackened except for where the proximity sensor and front camera are. Full adhesive all throughout means there is no rainbow effect, and the LED notification light is even tinted slightly so that it blends in with the chin, and is invisible until it turns on! The only flaw about this screen protector (yes, there is one) is that the area underneath the front camera is too thin to apply adhesive, so as a result there's a tiny gap between the glass and phone that can let in dust after a while. The dust does not seem to affect the front camera, and I never take selfies anyway, but I have yet to figure out a good way to get the dust out of there.
I have never had a screen protector fit this perfectly, even for phones other than the Mi Mix 2. Most other screen protectors have cutouts for the proximity sensor/front camera/both, but this one blends in so well that it feels like it's not even there.
Does anyone know if this protector has a dot matrix on the screen (tiny dots that reflect)? I purchased a Misha 3D protector from Amazon which looks identical to this, and it's great except for the grid of dots across the screen.

When I tried it there were no dots, just very reflective and had a weird smudge pattern going on which ruined it.
The flossmall one posted elsewhere is so much better.
Lol those kind of screen protectors damn sucks, they are not full glue, so that make lot of reflections. The nillkin (regular tempered glass, full glue, no black borders), is perfect and cover all the display... So why buy this imak piece of ****?

After putting the screen protector on, I take a toothpick and put some glue from a Pritt-stick in the little gap underneath the camera. Not much, just enough to close the gap. When it has dried you can color it with a black whiteboard marker if you want. When you remove the screen protector you can easily rub it off. Works great for me :good:
Thanks!
Anyone tried these?

Looking to buy this phone, any new news on protectors, or is IMAK our best option?
Thanks
