[Q] General root question on the Samsung Galaxy Family - General Questions and Answers

Hi All,
This is my first post - have mercy
I am running a small Android lab need for testing some app.
I was able to root successfully Samsung S4 and S5 and everything is ok on the root and the device level.
I am only curios regarding the OTA which displays off course on both devices that since the device was modified it cannot be updated bla bla...
Having said that and digging through out some great forums and posts here, I tried couple of workarounds - no one seems to solve it.
Tried to Change system from dalvik to ARM and back to dalvik
Tried to commit factory reset
Tried several files via Odin, and other workaround posted here but nothing seems to do the trick.
Again, this is no big issue but I am just wondering whether there is a solid solution here?
Not surprising the device status is set to Custom.
So any help will be much Appreciated!
Thanks.

[Q] New SCH-i535/d2vzw - Undocumented hardware change prevents installing custom ROM?

Apologize if I am posting in the wrong spot, but I have pretty much defined insanity by trying the same over and over and expecting a different result. I have accepted that I can't get it to work, but I am hoping someone can shed some light... and yes I have scoured XDA and the entire net for a solution. Here is my situation:
Received a replacement d2vzw with 4.1.2 because I bricked mine trying to downgrade from 4.3 - in the early days of release before it was known this was a very bad idea.
I am able to root and install custom recovery just fine, but TWRP and CWM cannot see/mount internal or external storage. Philz can see the storage but any attempt to apply a custom ROM fails and increments the binary counter.
I have tried editing the ROM script file to remove the model check but it still fails.
It seems that others have had the mounting problems per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616, but these are for Sprint and do not work for d2vzw.
From what I can tell it appears Sammy and/or Vzw made an undocumented change in the newer S3's that added additional security to prevent flashing custom ROM's. My question is has anyone been able to solve this for the d2vzw?
Thanks in advance.
Solved
So thanks to the post by ohlin5 here, many hours of frustration have been solved.
Again, my issues were that I could not mount internal or SD storage after apparently successfully achieving root and unlocking via CASUAL. Neither TWRP or CwM would work. Philz would mount the storage, but anything other than stock ROM would not install and would increment the binary counter. Based on other posts I was under the impression that there had been a hardware change (this is a newer S3), that was causing this behavior. However, it occurred to me that the bootloader was not actually fully unlocked (even tho it appeared that way and recovery was able to be installed). Per the posting above, it was suggested to run EZ-Unlock and then install recovery and this WORKED! I am not sure what the issue is and why CASUAL is not working in some cases, but I can confirm the behavior and fix.
Hopefully ohlin5's post can save some others the time/hassle as it seems many have the same problem.

[Q] lost bluetooth (greyed button) after s4 sgh i337 auto root

Hi
I use a Bell Mobility SGH i337M samsung S4. I had a stock ROM. Then i rooted with:
CF-Auto-Root-jfltecan-jfltevl-sghi337m.tar.md5
All works pretty well but I totally lost bluetooth capability and my camera refuses to load.
I have SU with twrp. I cleared cache. I even rebooted and wiped partition cache. Still nothing. Bluetooth doesn't load or even offer up a list of anything. It freezes.
I reinstalled the auto root file and got another pass in odin. Still stuck.
Theres little help available for this situation and even less so for a canadian S4 and...to paint myself into an even further corner, I am using bell mobility in Quebec which seems to have another set of constraints. Very few use the exact same baseband version as us.
I am not sure i can get my hands on the stock rom anymore since most links have failed to give me anything besides an Avast warning of a pending infection.
Installing a few 3rd party cameras didn't help. The camera still won't load.......and the bluetooth problem is another big one. I read about needing to write new command lines but it wasn't well explained.
Any help out there would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Sprint Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport SM-G860P L5.0 Root/ROM/Recovery/Kernel

Hello all, I am relatively new to the android rooting scene. I have looked into it before but always became discouraged by the amount of different informaton from different sources. I am a little bit familiar with flashing processes as I used to install CFW onto Sony PSP and PS3 devices. However there's a lot of new terms that I am soaking in and trying to figure out what it all means when it comes to phone rooting. I am currently using a Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport running Lollipop 5.0, with build number, "LRX21T.PVPU2BOH1" and Kernel "3.4.0-4445742 August 6, 2015". I've been looking around and every time I think I find a reliable source for rooting I see a disclaimer saying only works with certain build numbers, and mine doesn't seem to be any of the builds I have seen. A Google search of my build brings a total of 5 searches wit no information regarding it. Anyways I am looking to successfully root my device, install a working recovery mode, and if possible, install a ROM. I have searched through threads and scrounge up some information about the SM-G860P but not enough for me to go through with the process with 100% certainty of success. I also hope that this thread can be useful to other SM-G860P users and a one stop shop for all the files needed to safely root, backup, and restore files. Basically, I know it can be rooted using Odin and CFAR on Lollipop 5.0. But the steps after that I am unsure. Do I install TWRP, CRM, what ROMS can I install, what kernel do I need. Thanks in advance to any developers or members who can provide all the proper links to attain my goal.
I have a very similar build. I have successfully put on root, and CWM recovery, but, any attempts at custom roms have failed (assuming due to kernel), and I am unable to get tethering working, despite having root.
Followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/development/recovery-cwm-s5-sport-sm-g680p-t2907945 for recovery.
I rooted following something like: http://www.android.gs/root-sprint-galaxy-s5-on-android-5-0-lollipop-os/. The key was using the auto root, then flashing the update via CWM. Had to make sure CWM was installed, as flashing using stock recovery caused issues.
Tried to flash CM12 from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/development/rom-adulterated-cm12-5-0-2-t2987665
But ended up in a boot loop.
I'm also scared to put xposed framework on, since most saying need to use a custom rom or else phone will bootloop.
Using most of the methods to tether, (like adb settings global or sqlite), tether_dun_required keeps resetting back to 1 after turning on tethering, so, I still haven't found a solution to that. I'd love to hear from anyone who's got tethering working on SM-G860P with lollipop.

[Completed] Bootloop problem on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5100)

Hello!
I have the following problem and after countless searches over many forums I ended up finding no answer:
About 4-5 months ago my P5100 started to restart itself after 1 or 2 minutes of functioning properly (restarts even faster if i try to connect over Wi-Fi or install an app). I thought that if I leave it for a while everything will be ok, it wasn't the case so I started trying to fix it. Before I go on I mention that my P5100 was rooted , running CWM version 5.5 and CM10(10.1.3), i haven't messed with the rom, recovery, firmware etc. for more that one year and a half so it started all of a sudden. I tried everything starting from simply updating the CM version to ADB commands and finally flashing back to the stock firmware with Odin. The wipe data/factory reset didn't work neither in recovery nor commands, I even tried to delete everything via Internal Storage in my pc through USB. Every time it reverts itself to the point it was left before although everything seemed to work just fine no errors or so. It doesen't remember after reboot any setting I made or any app that i installed(if I manage to install one) it is like i didn't do anything at all to it. :crying:
Many thanks for taking your time to read my thread and maybe help me:laugh:

S5 root help

I bought the S5 when it first came out and subsequently used towelroot, as soon as it was available. It's been great for customization and extended functionality through the years. Now, however, i have slowly been experiencing more and more issues with this current setup...i.e. some functions have stopped working and many apps no longer work with the kitkat andoid version. Anyway, I am looking for a way to upgrade to marshmallow, or even lollipop, to be able to use apps...and hopefully some ui functionality returns with a reset during the process.
Warning: I have never used odin or flashed roms or anything to that level but i am willing to learn with some good direction.
Current setup:
SM-G900V, Android 4.4.2, Kernal 3.4.0, Build KOT49H.G900VVRU1ANCG, eMMC 15****
If it matters, I also use SuperSU, Xposed.
Not sure what other info would be helpful to assist me, but feel free to ask.
Also lately it can get stuck in a boot loop when rebooting. I'm afraid one day i will be unable to get it to boot up. additionally, it was hit or miss on reboots previously, but now i am unable to get the phone to recognize the SD card. Maybe i should unroot and hard reset, then reroot. Any suggestions regarding that approach? I vaguely remember something about having to undo all the changes made before unrooting.
Edit: All works fine currently, but hit or miss on reboots.
