Hardware repairs
Ok so here we go. Basically you should follow the video I have found on youtube. I did. There are few comments on my side though:
I changed the body using only Torx T5 and Philips 00x40 screwdrivers. They are like 2$ each (I think, I am not in USA)
when it says unscrew four T5 screws I recommend getting rid of philips 00x40 screw too, instead of doing it later
at about 2:00 it says lift SIM and card reader. In the movie it goes like *snap* and gone. Real life experience is that this is glued. You will have to steadily and slowly pull it, watching the glue slowly going off.
after you remove the back cover there will be a piece of tape underneath it. take it off and apply on new body. Otherwise backlit buttons migh flash through between body and battery cover.
speaking about tape... I though my sound control buttons were not working due to their tape being used. Also my power button was collapsed. AFTER REPLACING THE BODY WITH NEW BUTTONS, EVERYTHING WORKS FLAWLESSLY! The phone also has this nice soft feeling to it. I bought my saga used and I have it for a year so in many places the paint was just scratched off.
There will be also my movie ETA 09/06/2014
Requests and guides
Here I will take requests for guides/stuff regarding saga. Whatever U need just ask and I will try to develop.
REQUESTS:
MDDI panel kernel (Flinny said we need a person with MDDI panel and enough kernel knowledge to compile it for the new framebuffef)
GUIDES:
Optimization
Settings Optimilization
Minimum and Maximum CPU Frequency
These are the values between which your cpu will scale it's clockspeed. The lower is Min value the less battery your phone should consume when not bothered. Max value is the border of how high you will let you CPU go.
The higher it goes the more battery it eats. Many people say it improves the performance, some that it doesn't. Too high values can cause freezes so don't be surprised when that happens
HTC Desire S values:
Min 245-368
Max 1024-1401
Experimental 1516-1804 (usually causing issues)
U can also try using ART runtime. On my phone it makes everything run little better
Rest of Performance settings don't do any good IMHO. U are welcome to prove me wrong though. I will also make bareboning list but not feeling like it right now so maybe in the evening/tomorrow.

ART
Hi it's my first post here in the forum.
I have a Desire S and used a long time 4.04.
In the last 7 month i tried different cm10.1 and cm11 rom from devil kin.
i like'd the cm10.1 but after i switched to cm11 from 08022014 i was absolutely happy with the performance and the battery stats.
Awesome rom over all.Now i switched to the newest one and tried also the ART.
The Battery stats are ok with the newer roms but the one from 08022014 are the best for me.
A few apps don't work with art.Titanium Backup and others.
Then i restored my Backup with dalvik.
Have anyone the same problem with art

ART is still in development. That's why it's in the developers settings So yes some apps have trouble working on it. Can you please tell us what apps? BTW I was using twrp on art and it was running just fine. Are you on stock superuser or did you install supersu?

I use 4ext 1.0.0.6 RC1 with stock super user. The Titamium App produce a error after reboot during my tests. Not only when i open it.
I only test it for a short time.
ART works a little bit smoother but sometimes it lags.
I will stay on Dalvik. It works better for me at the moment. In which partition store the ART the cache files?

someone should finally make MDDI kernel

Frankly i have no idea. But if you wanna wipe them then standard recovery wipe does the trick so maybe in the same as dalvik

That's true. Sadly right now i don't have skills required to even try to compile one. I don't really think anyone would be able though if Flinny didn't make one so far

Theoretically it makes no difference. Practically I always barebone, switch to ART then install aps
BTW. about MDDI kernel. Flinny said we need a person with MDDI panel and enough kernel knowledge to compile it for the new framebuffer.

In the next days i will test it with ART again. With clean Installation.I hope it works for me.
I have my desire S in daily use and I cannot stay to long with errors in a rom.I'm on S-ON and must always flash boot.img
so i can do this only at homeBut i will try all new roms from devil kin.
Interesting thread. However, it is a known fact that AOSP ROMs have markedly worse battery life than Sense ROMs (e.g., on SVHD I can manage 2 days with moderate use, on a recent AOSP build I'd be happy to last 8 hours, even after dimming the brightness and such). Has this issue been resolved yet? (It might possibly be related to wifi, because I observe the same behavior if under Sense I tick the 'enable best performance' setting under wifi?)
First time i have the same problems.switch to fix destination in c'lock fixed the Problem.also check if Google now is off

I also believe that . That's the reason I'm sticking with Blackout Rom (I found out battery lasts more than SVHD - maybe I'm wrong),
Did anyone lately done an actual comparison with CM11 and Sense in terms of battery life? My last tests were almost a year ago so maybe things got better ...

Hi guys, in these days I'm trying many different roms to chose the best one. I've tried these: AndroidMe, codename android 1.3.3, CyanogenMod 9 v4.0.3 v2.1 and CyberGR-MOD with the respective stock-kernel but no one did satisfy my desires.
I just want these "mods"
- configurable Toggles in status bar (so that i can switch on and off 3g data just with 2 screen taps)
- Battery icon with % of battery left
- Configurable Lockscreen (I need at maximum 4 targets)
- TouchWake (the screen turns on with just a finger touch on it)
- Maximum frequence of cpu at 1,2 Ghz
Now comes the big problem! With all the roms I've tried some of this was not available. The best one was cyberGr-Mod, but I had a lot of battery drain.
Which combo Rom+ kernel do you suggest me to have the things I wrote before and also a great battery Life?
Thanks a lot
There are quite some points you want in your rom, I'm not sure if there is any that fits you needs.
But let's see:
- configurable Toggles in status bar (so that i can switch on and off 3g data just with 2 screen taps)

I know that feature only from CyanogenMod. That latest version (which you also tried) has them build in but not to a 100% complete. Almost every Rom needs some more development to get all the features implemented it should have, so maybe you need to wait a little.
- Battery icon with % of battery left

This option does not need to be implemented in a Rom, you can easily change the batter indicator yourself with just flashing the Icon you want. At least for CM9 there are some links in the Rom-Thread.
- Configurable Lockscreen (I need at maximum 4 targets)

I'm not sure if any Rom has that feature but it also sounds to me like this could be done by an additional program?

Most Roms and custom kernels have more overclocking, but that it no need at all. You could either use SetCPU to limit the cpu or for example a Rom like CM9, this has additional options to limit the cpu.

Why not taking cyberGR when you liked it most and try some other kernels till you find what you want. I would try either the GlaDOS kernel or the matr1x one and then trying different governors in the cpu settings.
aokp + air kernel
All that u want i have in my combo (ROM+Kernel). I use apex (bixie) v.1.0.0 + matr1x kernel v.16.5 (see a review of this combo on nexusshacks - really rocks, i get with normal usage almost 2 days of battery and there are really a lot of tweakable options).
The best combo i've tryied.
cheers.
If i helped u somehow, pls hit thanks button

forgot to mention, whatever rom u're using, try out NStools ans see if the tweakable options there avaliable are enough for u.

for touchwake and Configurable lockscreen they are embedded in many roms

I've just tried tooverclock to 1,1ghz, otherwise the phone was not stable

Sorry for the strange method to answer you but the multiquote-button didn't work
@ sean1984 : Which rom AOKP do you suggest me? is cyanogen the best AOKP or there is something better?
@ kalitza: I went suddenly to check the rom you suggested me on nexushacks, there are many positive comments but also some users which couldn't install the rom for some problems... above all, I will surely give it a try.
Now I'm testing Codename android 1.3.3 and everything except the statusbar toggles (limited to 4 and not customizable, that means no data toggle) seems to work well, i'll use it again a couple of days to have a better idea and then (after nandroid backup if everything in the rom is ok) I will try the one you suggested me.
About NSTools, where can I find the last release? does every rom have a specific release of NSTools or it is universal for every Rom?
in CNA 1.3.3 go to Settings - Interface and touch Notification widget text, it will open toggle menu where you can choose which ones you prefer

Don't worry, you'll become a regular crackflasher very soon Speaking about ROMs, my favorites are CNA and Nuhetri, pair them with speedy-7 or air kernel and you're good to go, just delete RAMDISK folder in speedy-7 zip if you're flashing it on CNA. It's great to see how ICS mods keep evolving, thanks again to devs and their hard work...

Today I'm trying CNA with kernel Matrix, good battery life but the phone seems a little bit laggy sometimes.. I will surely try the Speedy-7 that you suggested.
Yes It's a great thing that these roms keeps evolving, the only thing that I don't like very much is that there are so many different roms that is so difficult to chose the best one, imagine if there will be only 2-3 roms (for example 1 MIUI, 1 cyanogen, 1 AOSP) and all the developers focused toghether their efforts just in these 3 Roms, I think that now we would already have perfect kernel-roms completely free of problems, full of features, and with 2 days battery life
Yes, I agree with that. We have too many similar ROMs, but I see more and more teams forming, like CNA for example and the result is obvious. I am no dev, but it's kinda hard for a single person to maintain ROM on regular basis, refreshing it with new mods and stuff like that due to lack of time... So, hope to see more teams developing a single ROM

Me too. Battery life is very short using Pacman v18.0, at most 5 hours. The screen is the process that consumes more battery. Maybe it is only a my problem, but with Fallout v.5 I didn't have this problem (but others :laugh.
Well I find the battery life good on pure CM10.
If it wasnt for the graphics glitches when browsing, it'd be a really good ROM!
I have installed Pacman v18.0 about 3 days ago and am very impressed with the ROM. No problem with battery life but one major problem with the phone randomly going into Sim Lock mode. Could be after 5 minutes, could be after 5 hours and sometimes while just using it.
PACman, way to go.
I'm using Andromadus CM10.1 and battery is good...Overall is good except Bluetooth that doesn't work yet...

Mine has about an hours worth of battery...
For now I'm switching to my sense rom
On the latest build (build 10) of Andromadus 10.1 I found that the bluetooth was fixed!
Overall, at this time, I believe that the 3 andromadus ROMs are by far the best Jellybean effords!
Thank GOD I got here...
Could someone help me with rom that includes these features?
1. The official ics look (nexus ics)
2. That includes all apps like the sensed ics got. (fM radio, voice recorder, youtube etc)
3. My wifi doesnt turn on when i use any custom rom It just says "Turning on wifi" for the whole day.
4. The settings tab normal (not the tablet type like pacman got)

Thanks

some people prefer to UV their kernels. Some people don't prefer. Some kernels allow UV, some don't. see it all comes down to preference,of course UV also may cause performance to decrease. so it stills come down to preference.

Hmm, when ppl say try it yourself, it simply means that u would have to flash the rom to know what's best for u.
Everyone uses his/her phone differently, so basicly there is no ideal rom that pleases everyone.
Everyone will you give a different opinion in terms of battery/speed/etc. That's why it is a bit pointless in asking what's the "best rom" for the other person when the usage is different.
So no point having second doubt and just flash the phone, try every single rom, i have flash from sense to cm to ics and now back to gb.
Go ahead and experiment the roms for yourself. Today someone might give u a suggestion, the next day a another. that's why it is consider pointless in asking such question as 'which is the best can u recommend me' and much better to try it for yourself instead of being shortchange in case there is another better than that is being suggested.

Hello I am fairly new here, and as I dont have the right to post replies in Android Development section I will share my thoughts here.
I am not a pro with Android allthough I managed to add custom ROMs, root and so on on all my previous phones. So a bit advanced android user.
I wanted JB for my HTC Sensation and after reading a few threads here I decided to go with CarbonRom. Today I have to switch away.
PROS:
+ Jelly Bean
+ Nice tuning of CM and JB by Carbon Team - many small customizations that I enjoyed
CONS:
- Random signal drops
- App crashes
- Terrible batterry life (8 hours on standby with EDGE on, on 3G it would be even less)
- App restarts
- Maps glitch (but if I undesrtand it correctly, it is common on Jelly Bean?)
Might be that these problems are specific, and/or have a solution by tweaking, but I wanted a ROM that works with minimum effort. I think of CarbonRom as a great promise in the future, when it is tuned, but for now, it is not for my everyday use. Anyway I thank the author for the development and port and I will probably try it again, when it is a bit more tuned.
Except the Maps glitches (which are related to something on the kernel or something) I don't have any of these issues. Did you clean install the rom? Maybe try the sultan kernel with the rom.

Yes, I made a complete wipe. How long does your battery last when using mobile data? I do not remember having these issues with ICS 4.0.4 - which is why I am looking at Kangs port of CM. There are many random bugs as disappearing keyboard, random app restarts... I dont know if these are ROM related as this is first ROM i tried on Sensation - but I dont recall these bugs on headsets with custom roms before. I will look into changing the Kernel as I am not a big fan of installing and reinstalling again and again. Also I think there is some CarbonRom update.
I have always mobile data and wifi active, also gps. I usually take it from charging at 6 or 7 am and put it to charge at about 11 pm, with about 20% left, depends on how much I used it over the day, sometimes it has only 10%. Once it lasted for over 26 hours, but i didn't use it all the day.
I never experienced app restarts, only on rare occasions I experienced that the keyboard closes itself, but it didn't bothered me much.
In my opinion it's the most stable and smoothest 4.3 rom beside android1-7's cm 10.2 (never tested albinoman's, maybe his is good too, feel free to test them). All I changed is the kernel, because sultan kernel really increases the performance.
As far as I know rathore has an update ready but couldnt it upload to goo.im yet.
Thanks for your reply, I will try the kernel update first and than Albinomans CM if it does not help. Because the little tweakes are really nice in this ROM.
I can't say that I totally agree with you in your review.
No random signal drops for me.
App crashes at the same rate as with other ROM's for me.
I have exelent batterry life.
App restarts at the same rate as with other ROM's for me.

Well compared to stock rom battery sucks on every custom rom i ever tried. When I bought this phone I could use it 2 days without having to charge it.

Same here. I'd have thought battery would improve in custom Roms but what do I know.

I thought that too, but i got proved wrong.
I got similar thoughts according battery performance on custom roms. But nobody remarked that stock rom on nonXE version has lower CPU frequency, so that's why juice lasts longer. So we nonXE users should buy XE battery first.

I have an XE, nonetheless battery performance got worse, so its not the cpu.
Now my earpiece is going crazy. I am doing a NAND backup, and will switch to official ICS to see if these problems are rom related.
Reverted back to stock ROM
I am now on the last ICS stock ROM (rooted). It is just one day but so far:
Ear speaker piece was broken, now it works again (it made somtehing like robot modulated voice)
No call drops
No app crashes
Better battery life
I will update in the next few days, as I dont plan to stay on the stock rom - Jelly Bean is way better. Carbon Rom is very nice but bugged as hell and drains battery - at least from my experience.
Sum-up
All problems descibed here vanished with the install of rooted original ICS. I will try another ROM now, asi ICS with Sense is so damn ugly . Anyway I dont recommend Carbon ROM (the older versions) for everyday use.
installed newest
(date 27.1.2014 with GAPPS modular mini from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530073)
did full wipe (factory reset, system, cache) as in info
have some major problems with stability, looks like system degrades quickly after leaving screen off mode
After restart I can set up everything fine, can use network, launch apps, change system settings etc
but after first turning off and turning on lock screen starts to show first problems, dots (I'm using pattern unlock) sometimes start to activate on their own, not always but sometimes this happens, but I'm still able to logon...
after second 'screen off' and 'screen on' I'm having big problems trying to unlock screen - sometime dot's don't react to touches, sometimes they do not end connecting after taking away finger from screen...
after third off/on I'm unable to pass unlock screen - it becomes unresponsive, dots start to connect randomly, sometime even 'emergency calls' gets activated...
what can cause this? full phone restart appears to fix problems for short time, but after few off/on have problems agains...
this did not happen in builds from few months ago
tried to set higher min cpu frequency to 384MHz but that doesn't help
other things that I chaged are:
- cpu governor -> badass
- i/o -> noop
- active 'allow purging of assets'
anyone got ideas what could cause this? and how to fix
phone:
htc sensation xe, unlocked
hboot 1.29, radio 11.24a.3504.31_m
can provide other info if needed
It's easy to be fixed, install stock rom.

thank you, very helpful
What firmware are you on? Did you experience any of these problems on any other rom?
You say the dots connect themselves. As if the touchscreen is used? Sounds somehow like a broken digitizer.

Do you know how many threads like yours have been opened recently? Is it that hard to search and why do you expect flawless rom?
When will people learn, it's unofficial, it's custom, it's a new android version tied to the old hardware with the old drivers, it will, probably never be perfect.

I must have missed all of these threads. There were some threads about cm11 but they had other issues.
This phone is 3 years old and you're using Badass. Since you want more performance, set your CPU governor to Ondemand and set I/O scheduler to BFQ or SIO.

ok, will try
atm had to move back to previous cm 10.1 based on 4.2.2 prepared few months ago, it appears to work much better but still have some stability issues. Doesn't look like problem with touch screen as most (now like 97%) it works flawlessly... yeah, not 100% so it could be hardware problem, just that didn't happen before
and yeah, I know these are unstable, beta like, etc roms - I like to test new features on my sens xe and one prepared by sultanxda is atm the best for me, keep up great work and thank you for time spent working on this rom.

Why not try my CM10.2 ROM? CM10.2 is far more stable than CM11, and, personally, CM10.2 feels smoother than CM11.
first of all - sorry for misinformation but I found cause of my problems with interface... looks like minimal amount of water must have got under the cover when I few days ago applied new screen protection, yesterday I got this idea of what could cause this sudden problems... few hours phone stayed on the room heater (not too hot ofc) and touch screen problems are gone! yeah, tbh I love this phone and was very angry thinking I'd have to replace it, now I don't have to
back to rom - atm back to your (sultan) rom based on CM 11 with update from 29.1.2014, it has some small problems but I like to test new features
problems I've found so far:
- less responsive and smooth
- launcher3 doesn't allow to create new home screens on the left, had to create new to the right then make some rearangments before I got things right
- some widget resize problems under launcher3
- other small problems all I can live with
but I like more available memory and better battery life, going to test ART soon
and it is good that messanging is back, hangouts is just... not for me
Why cant i find my phone contacts on SIM ??? Its say no contacts found? When i import some numbers from vCard from SD why cant i move them to SIM???

This is another story
Hey guys I just recently got a second hand Ns Im using as an Mp3 player for the gym I loaded ENHDROIX rom but its prettty laggy and stuttery. Loading Pandora is extremely sluggish and actually crashes a bit.
Im looking for a rom with some decent speed and just a few perks, volume rocker wake mainly.
Thanks

well I placed the issue of Pandora in there so perhaps someone who uses the phone the same way could input on what they use and that its comparable to what I am looking for.
I would just dump rom after rom until I find something but time for me is super precious these next couple months.
A chart is great but remember Im not using a lot of the features the charts will describe.
Im only using it for google voice (to see my calls in the gym), pandora, play store, and play music, then some web browsing of course.
I actually turned off all the phone and data features to hopefully conserve battery life.

I just read it. I can try the slim rom. Im going to try installing devil kernel later first and see if it helps.
Still just hoping someone who is utilizing the same features I am can drop in and give their input. Not saying any rom is bad or better just looking to save some time, Im on the road a lot the next few months and the gym is my only real down time. Last night it was quite frustrating dealing with pandora.

The rom version you are using is partly to blame, newer isn't always better, go back to a previous version and install Devil.. the same for Slim, I wouldn't suggest passing 3.0 as of right now and Illusion has a couple issues, but it has serious speed...

Euroskank KitKang is another good option, and Devil Kernel is a must for any of the CM based ROMs, in my opinion.

Try Illusion 3/16 ( I made a bootable version, as the original had a flaw in the updater script, link is on the page) and flash the boot.img from your AOSP rom.. I was getting 5500's in antutu on stock speeds and 6500's overclocked, smooth scrolling and better battery life as well...
Don't try Devil with this rom as it breaks the playstore..
fastest of them all
no need for custom kernel just boot up latest nightlie from Cyanfox and cyanfox gapps and it's the fastest 4.4 rom for nexus s there is ! !!:laugh:

I haven't tested Cyanfox since 2.02, it is a quick rom.. the site is down, gearing up for version 3, I wonder if our device will still be supported?.. C-rom is very fast with Devil kernel, (the initial release, the second release is slightly slower than the first) and has tested higher than any rom I've tried to date, even higher than when I tested Cyanfox.. If our device is supported in version 3, I hope the rotation bug is fixed..
