[Q] Is AT&T`s HSPA speeds really this slow? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I`ve had my Nexus 5 for about a week now and its awesome other than the AT&T network. I did a speedtest on HSPA and only got 1.41 down and .41 up. That is DISGRACEFUL! My friends iPhone gets about 6 down in my house why am I getting 1.5? whats the deal? LTE is the same way only getting about 10 when he is getting 20.

its possible that att limits the data speed for go phone. i know tmobile limits the speed of some of the carriers that use its network, priority going to real tmo customers.
you can try this though, since you have root. using a root file explorer like root explorer, copy/paste these four lines into your build.prop in /system/build.prop/, save it, then reboot for it to take affect..

to be honest, im not familiar with cricket. im not paying that much more than you, $80, and i get completely unlimited high speed data(with great lte speeds here in nyc). but, if you dont use that much data, i guess it wouldnt be worth it. i use way too much data

should I try changing my apn settings?

Cricket throttles as well as it uses ATT's network. ATT gives priority to its postpaid subscribers.
go phone is not the same as postpaid ATT and you get throttled.

Straight talk Modem

I'm currently using the Infuse on straight talk with Zeus rom. With a Speedtest I'm getting over 5mgs down, 2mgs up and under 80ms ping . Will a new modem affect the speeds or just ping? And are those speeds normal for ATT on this device?
thanks

Ok thanks man, seems simple but would I have to be out of contract with AT&T to transfer my number and all? Also, is this just pay as you go or can you set up an automatic pay method? Could u explain that if possible? And I apologize for so many questions but im trying to lower the 100+ month phone bill (college student)

About the same. I heard that straight talk uses the same towers as AT&T, so that would explain it.

Worth the ETF
If you're currently paying $100 per month under contract, you'd make up for the cost of a $325 ETF in six months. Your contract probably isn't brand new, so the actual ETF would be less than that.
If you don't want to autopay, you can also buy 90 days worth of service from Walmart.com, which brings the price a bit below $45 per month, not including tax.
Here's a giant thread that lists the prepaid options out there: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
Keep in mind that that thread lists several options that use T-Mobile's network, which isn't an option on the Infuse unless you want to always be on Edge speeds. People on that thread seem to agree that Straight Talk is the best option currently available using AT&T's network.
A lot of people who go prepaid port their numbers to Google Voice and make and receive all calls through that service. That way, they can hop from one prepaid provider to another without having to go to the bother of porting their number. I considered trying that myself, but I found there was too much voice lag in making Google Voice calls. It was like talking to someone via satellite or something: everything came through a half second late. I'd be curious if anyone has had better results than I have with that.
A couple of things to be aware of: Straight Talk claims to provide unlimited data, but they'll shut you down if you use too much. Most people say to play it safe and not to go over 100 MB per day or 2GB per month. They generally give you a couple of warnings before they take action, but in the worst-case scenario, they could cancel your account and you'd lose your number.
Also, these companies are almost always limited to AT&T's network, with no roaming access at all. They tend to have terrible customer service because they cut costs wherever they can.
I'm sticking with AT&T while my phone is under warranty (I've been having some minor issues with it that I need to get addressed), but as soon as that's over, I'm switching to Straight Talk.
The number porting took about 20 min after doing the online set up.. As far as data I don't think I'm close to the 2gb cut off that people claim. I guess if you tether they will cut you off eventually. This is plenty fast for every day use email, pandora. I have not had any issues.. The only thing that I notice is that when I ever I send a MMS I have to add message with it or it dosen't get delivered. But it could just be this phone, my iphone on Straight talk would work fine with MMS. I love the $ 41 + tax I pay..

Sent from my Supercharged R3velation V2 Infuse!
I'm currently running StraightTalk with a Samsung Infuse. I have gotten as high as 7mb down 2mb up depending on the time of day and what tower I'm hitting. The one by my house is great and so is the one by my friend's house. This was one of my better ones from by my house.

Prepaid Plan?

I have a question, because a lot of people here seem to do it. How exactly do you go about getting an international version of a phone(GS3 or HTC One X) and using it with a prepaid plan? Do you just go out and buy cards or what? Also what prepaid plans are worth using and which aren't so hot?
it's a good question, I would like to know it too
There are a few good plans out there. Not sure about the phones you listed as I have the GT-N7000 but Straight Talk is probably on of the best prepaids that I have ran across. Unlimited everything for $45/mo (data is not truely unlimited though read others about it).
You can buy the sim card only from their website straighttalksim dot com and it states "Use any compatible or unlocked GSM phone – including smart phones".
May be worthing into for you.
+1 on the Straight Talk. I've used it on a Euro Pre3 as well as a German market Omnia7. The speeds are the same as AT&T and if you behave on the usage you won't have any problems. They frown on streaming so keep it at less than 50 megs per day (it's actually in violation of their T&C's). Same goes for tethering, I tether on a daily basis but I keep it limited to emails and attachments of less than 10 megs. For $45 a month, we can't really complain about the limitations. You could always go legit, but you will be seeing your proctologist on a regular basis.

I'll amend my statement for clarity. Based on the devices I've owned and used on Straight Talk, the speeds are the same as AT&T. This includes H+ on the Pre3 which is advertised as 4G. I've never tried on any LTE device so I can't, or won't, comment on it.

The Nexus also works on the t-mobile, $30, 100 minute, 5 gig data, unlim text plan. However, most "new" phones are coming without the 1700 band, hence won't get hspa+ on t-mobile (unless you buy it straight off them).
Check properly before doing anything.

Gonna be buying note 3 here in a few days and this is the one that I'm gonna get...

Was gonna get a note 2 but figures since I'm buying out right might as well get the best.

I bet the carriers had something to do with the pricing and Samsung with the international models doesn't want to under cut them. There is also regional pricing. Whatever they feel like is a good price considering the competition and people I guess.
We know that from the FCC papers that Tmobile version will work on AT&T LTE but what If those specific bands were locked or not turned on in their radio? We dont have a real world proof yet.
Gonna order mine in 2 days... will post when I get it from time I order to in my hand. I have the new LTE sim cards from STart as well so I can see what happens. I am not LTE yet but hopefully soon. Thanks for the input. ?

I have ATT LTE Straight Talk sim card. if you notice their policy changed. you only get 2.5GB of unlimitted data at LTE speeds then you are dropped down to 2G Edge speeds until the next billing cycle. If I were you I would try a few of the other carriers. (MVNOs) Be aware that over the past week quite a few of them have changed their policies to allow on y the first 2.5GB at LTE speeds. You can always go to Simple Mobile and pay $60 to get 5GB at LTE speeds. Target just opened up BrightSpot Mobile which has a decent plan for $60 5GB of LTE data. There are alot of MMVNOs to consider.

Mine has been awesome!
In Ohio with AT&T on the N9005.
They WILL throttle you after 2.5GB, but only during peak hours for your tower
I was able to use all data I wanted (HSPA+. no LTE since I have N9005 and not N900T or N900A) without being throttled at my house out in the boonies. As soon as I go into the city, data speed drops to 250kbps once I've used my 2.5GB. Speed is around 6mbps when I'm not throttled.
PS. My parents have ST on their Nexus 5's and they get 30-50 mbps when not throttled and 250kbps when throttled. If you have the N900T ot N900A, you could expect a similar speed on LTE.

[Q] AT&T Throttling My Data?

I have had my Nexus 5 since the beginning. I am on AT&T of course. I pulled the sim from my HTC One XL and put it into the 5. No problems. Up until this week I think. Speedtest will not go above 0.56Mbps. I am in Houston with plenty of LTE service. I check my At&T account and they have changed the logo above my phone number. It used to show Android HTC. So, I figure that Att has figured out that i am not using "their" phone. I call them up and they say that the IMEI's do not match. The tech guy was cool. He said he was trying to help me. That nothing was going to change. He did a few things but no dice. I wasnt sure if i was supposed to tell Att anything as they might ruin my chances at having good service with an unlocked phone. Anyway, i have restored my phone, changed APNs, and now I dont know what to do.
I don't know but just curious does your accrual signal say LTE?
I didn't tell att when I switched from an iPhone. LTE was still fine

I tried the Tellinfo app. What am I looking for? My signal strength is -106. It used to be around -85. I have tried the ATT PHONE APN and the ATT LTE PTA APN. Both are working the same. ATT is supposed to call back today. He said after resetting the phone, the last two efforts would be to send a new sim, and if that doesnt work, then its my phone. Now, I'm pretty sure it's not the phone. I also didnt have an option for Edge. THere was EvDo.

Well you do know if your on the Unlimited Data Plan on AT&T you get throttled down to about that speed after hitting 5GB .... .
Its probably data cap 5GB throttle city. It happened to me. I called ATT and they confirmed I was at 8GB for the month and had to wait till cycle flipped. After flip flying at "super fast" ATT speeds again.

You're lucky. I'm using my N5 on T-Mobile and I lost my grandfathered unlimited plan. I had no data (but emails and SMS worked ... strange). After a week of communications and testing tech support claimed that the N5 was not compatible with the grandfathered plan (it did show up in my account on the website as Unknown with unlimited data). After upgrading to a metered plan my service is excellent.

Can you confirm what plan and rom you're on? I'm on unlimited lte plan and I USED to be able to do this but since switching to the Nexus 5 they won't even let me connect via wap.cingular on the nexus 5 (even on 3g). I have no problem doing this on my nexus 4 or my i9100 gsII, but either the nexus 5 or att has been blocking me since

That's what T-Mobile does on its grandfathered plans after 4.5 GB and on its new metered plans after you exceed your plan limit. Great, huh?

No H+, LTE or MMS on AT&T

So I can't get LTE or hspa+ to work on my n5 using at&t. MMS doesn't work either.
Hspa works fine. 6mb down and 1mb up. Which is fine for me. But still strange. This is a new at&t Sim. So its not a simcard issue. I just recently got data on my account. Because before it was just a minutes only plan and I kinda cheated the system and got a unlocked phone, simply poped my Sim in and thats it.

What ROM are you on? You should be able to go to settings/more/cellular networks/access point names then choose either ATT LTE or ATT Phone. No editing required.

Tried att phone. I found some kind of APN just now, it finds hspa but its spoty at my house so can't check for sure if I get hspa+ or LTE. But i m using cataclysm ROM. Elemental x kernel.
One thing I noticed is the only APN that works is .Cingular. Anything .att doesn't work.
Just checked. My house is covered with 4g LTE

Your might have to call ATT and have them provision the phone. They'll just need the imei.

Alright. That won't effect the plan I have? Trying to keep costs low and don't want to be charged extra for using a smart phone, they don't know I have one although online it recognizes the nexus 5 model number and imei

Last thing to check would be to make sure you have Preferred Network Type set to LTE under Cellular network settings. Other than that you might have to live with HSPA. Trust me though ATT knows damn well it's a smartphone. They may consider your plan grandfathered they may not. If they don't expect a bill from them sometime in the future.

The plan I used to be on was discontinued. And then I bough an att HTC first. Went to the store and they gave me a new Sim to fit in it and warned me I may be charged for data in the future during data sweeps. Then I had many phones after that, no data. And now this plan I can have data :/ its the mobileshare plan. And oh they know its a smartphone. They knew I had an atrix HD so....that's kinda odd.
I'm just wondering if it costs extra to have LTE vs the 3G.

I'm on AT&T, and my APN is "ATT Phone". I get LTE no problem.

No, LTE doesn't cost more than 3G. It's all part of the same data plan.
