Blocking ads Securely - Android General

I would like to block ads on my phone using something like ad block plus or the hosts file but I'm having a hard time getting anything to work smoothly without rooting. I want to be able to use my phone for banking too so I'm hesitant to root. Is it possible to block ads without diminishing the security of my phone?
I played with using an ad blocker and firewall and connection monitor together but don't know enough about Android to feel confident I'm not vulnerable. It seems like the best security might be stock firmware.
Where's the android version of that mac program "little snitch"?
Please post your opinions and advice. Thanks!

There are a module for the xposed framework that are able to hide root to selected apps. And I'm sure there are apps to do the same thing if you don't want to use the xposed framework.

Think the easiest way to do it is to use a modded hosts file (it's located in /system/etc/hosts or /data/data/etc/hosts, if I'm not mistaken). In fact, if you replace that file with another - modified - one (that you can find in a lot of threads, here, on XDA), it will automatically block every Ad based on any domain marked in your new hosts file.
Made a quick research:
Mother of all HOSTS file - 'hosts' file for your SGS2 Baby - Updated on 15 Feb 2012
(MoaAB) Mother of All AD-BLOCKING (20 MAY 2014) BLOCKS Malware Spyware Bloatware
[MOD][GUIDE][Apr14] AdAway on Write Protected /system Partitions [RECOVERY]
Obviously, you can find much more!

Best adblocker for android is here, AdFree

So it's really limited out there on the android market and net to find a good adblocker app for android, well after using Adblock plus this didn't block all ads and caused my internet to go slow due to the app consuming data in the background. For years now I'm using Adfree , a small sized apk under 2mb, which customises ur host, doesn't consume internet, all u need is root. My nexus 5, nexus 7 and nexus 9 are all adfree, fast and safe from all those nasty popups and random tabs.
Here's the link, if u can donate to these guys, it will be appreciated. They've been running for years and update their hosts every week.

Another way of doing it is to transfer the hosts file from your adfree android to your pc in system/etc and run a dns server on the pc. Point your other computers and devices dns to
your dns server pc ip address and all ads are blocked.
Works for entire networks.

I tend to disagree. Tried Adhell since I got my phone on launch day, this week went back to DNS66. Hate to go the VPN route, but Adhell did nothing for me browsing Chrome and in some other apps. And before it's said I do not plan on using some other browser.
Here's what I use, but the premium version. https://disconnect.me/mobile/disc
I have tried Adhell but for me it doesn't block the ads on apps only on the browser. Does Adhell block ads on apps for u guys? Well u used adblock on my s7 edge it's the best for me to block ads on both browser and apps but it's no longer a free service haha.
I tried adhell but it blocked a couple of sites I wanted to use... (gumtree)
I just use adblocker for samsung by betafish. Although that doesn't do apps, just browser.
I used BlockThis on my S7 occasionally. Haven't tried anything on the S8+ yet though.
Adhell is ok but it doesnt block everything. All it needs is the ability to import your own hosts file and it would effectively give us adfree/adaway for rooted devices but no sign of such a feature yet despite quite a few requests from people, maybe if enough people request it then he will add this. It does have the ability to change dns servers now so you can try using an ad blocking dns server with it too. Disconnect pro works in the exact same way using the knox firewall, but seems to let just as many ads through but comes with an extortionate price and is supposedly geared more towards blocking trackers than ads, and you cant change the dns.
Other than that you have the vpn based ones like adguard (not free), dns666 (free). I just spotted one called netguard (free with ads and option to buy pro version) https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-netguard-root-firewall-t3233012 which sounds good and lets you use your own hosts file but again its a vpn blocker.
I use Blokada and so far it's the best for me

Yes it will, but you don't want to touch that thing with a barge pole. It isn't specifically made for ad blocking, its for tracking blocking. The price is a joke. You can't customise what its blocking at all. adhell is free, does the same thing, is specifically targeting blocking ads, and you can add/remove things from the list, which you cant do in disconnect pro. no contest. if only the dev of adhell would implement being able to import our own hosts files then we would have an adfree/adaway for rooted phones, but I dont know why he hasnt. most of the work to enable that is already done as it is obviously using some sort of hosts file anyway, just his own one instead of one we can customise ourselves.
my main issue is that nothing seems to block the ads that are in apps in your secure folder, regardless of whether it is a knox blocker or a vpn blocker, which i find ridiculous. trying to install the blocker into secure folder does not work and would double your battery drain even if it did work so that isnt an option.

DNS66. Just make sure your select all the sources. Works great
While it's not free I use adgaurd. They had a sale and I think it was under 15 bucks for a life time license. it's a VPN app and I haven't found anything else be able to compete with it's protection from ads. I love it. Probably had it about 6 months now. The free stuff tends to not work well at all. I've tried them all.

File Manager Bloatware Removal

Has anybody deleted some of the bloatware apps, more specifically the stock File Manager?
com.jrdcom.filemanager
/data/app/com.jrdcom.filemanager-2/base.apk
Wondering if anybody tried and had any ramifications from it.
This thing just all of a sudden activated itself and runs in memory, and there is no Disable for it. I could install an app to freeze it, but that defeats the purpose.

LOL...after 3 or 4 days the lovely File Manager App magically installed itself. Looks like a more indepth investigation is forthcoming.
Obviously there is another app that re-installs it.
Stinkin thing.
I switched over to the xperia rom on idol 3 And it got rid of a load of crap, Bunch of xposed is working.
I just dont care for the stock rom on this thing at all, Even debloated it runs like crap,
Ive had this device now over a week and cant find any sort of setup I like, I am used to lgs UI.
Even tried t get touchwiz ui and grace to run but nogo.
Did you remove the system update apps too by chance?

Haven't really had a chance to look deep into it yet. I've disabled auto updates, so pretty sure it's not getting it from the netz.
Funny thing, I tried running a 100mb system update and i failed to completely install. Havent thot about it much since then, But I suspect it was in that update somewhere, as I had never seen nor had an issue with it before.
Will strip down that update and see when I get a chance.
It comes pre installed as 'files' app, auto updates to "file manager" to then run this 'boost' branded adware. I call it adware because it does not adhere to the android force stop, disable peeking or any other android OS settings and automatically regenerates itself despite the OS not allowing auto updates.
Android should never allow provider apps to have a higher privelage that renders the OS setting useless, bundled apps should also not disable the uninstall and disable functionality of the OS.
I have spent weeks in settings to find out it is allowed to act like a virus and do what ever it wants being rewarded with ad revenue.
Thanks Google for allowing me to purchase hardware pre loaded with junk ads by default with no way of opting out, it's not only a privacy and security concern, it's a consumer complaint.

Yes , this lovely new addition to the file manager is actually the "Hawk Super Cleaner/ antivirus" seen here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apps.go.clean.boost.master&hl=en

I just installed TWRP and SuperSU on the stock Marshmallow following this guide:https://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/general/twrp-custom-recovery-idol3-6045-t3162608 and will be removing this cancer for good!
Cheers, I might have a look at rooting (pain seeing I bought 4 of these for myself and fam). I have reported the appin the playstore for being installed with root permissions bypassing the expected android user settings and will be following up with a complaint to the consumer watchdog.
I never bought hardware with the knowledge an innocent bloatware provider app would turn rouge with root permissions for ad revenue.
My phone will most likely be thrown at the wall so "File Manager" doesn't get another 1000 or so false positive downloads in the playstore from me.
Had 3 myself

I hear ya, I bought 3 of these.
I am very careful what I install on my device and read the manifest files on EVERYTHING so you can imagine how angry I was when my own phone manufacturer pushed unwanted adware/possible-probable spyware on to my device with no warnings or asking my permission.
Another odd thing is that after I uninstalled the Facebook app I had 2 apps appear (or were left over?) com.facebook.appmanager.apk and com.facebook.system.apk that were using up data and could not be removed until tonight after rooting.
Interesting article here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-v10/help/suspicious-apps-apps-section-facebook-t3415876
I have been studying computer and mobile security as a hobby for some time and have found that these "antivirus" and 'cleaner" apps on Android are the worst offenders of privacy of them all.
Scanning all your files, installed apps, contacts etc etc and sending all that data back to God knows where!
I have found that almost every single app that I have downloaded from the Play Store has some form of data mining and/or analytics.
Unfortunately, it's a catch 22 in Android..rooting your device breaks what little security is built into the system but it's the only way to remove pre-installed crapware.

Also, good luck trying to get anything done with Google or Alcatel.
I battled with Google for almost 8 months straight trying to stop an unscrupulous advertiser that was using FAKE virus warnings to trick users into installing an "antivirus" app on the Play store and just got sent around in circles.
Google is complicit!
I was finally successful in stopping the fraudulent activity after I contacted the Federal Trade Commission.

Data mining is a given these days which is why I have Pi-hole for my home dns and ubuntu for my home box, gotta do what you can. As for this phone I wouldn't do much on it unless I re flash it which is why I am angry with it.
As for Android taking the normal software stance of do nothing unless legally required, this time is interesting to me because they are effectively allowing the bypassing of the playstore agree feature to Install an app, being side loaded from Alcatel like this one would think breaks the playstore terms so knowledge should be enough for action in this case from the android or playstore devs. Doubt it but.
Also apon sale did not mention android as being adapted software that over rides expected android and playstore behaviour but did advertise android and use their logo so most likely a trademark vialation also.
The problem is Alcatel are adapting android and side loading apps to bypass security and privacy user settings to double dip on the customer for income despite the final result, android and the playstore can bury their heads in the sand all they want but they have been made aware of the risks.
Went over it again for peace of mind (sorry) but I wish you the best in your education as we need more people shinning the light on privacy simply because we are in the rise of the machines, not long before people worldwide ask what happened to all the jobs and when did the need for conventional ID actually dissapear.

Very well said!
The supervisor I spoke to at Alcatel tried to say that I/we agreed to the terms by using their devices which allowed them to push this on to our phones but I disagreed with him.
At one point I even thought of ditching my phone and getting an iPhone or an Android device that is compatible with the Replicant OS https://www.replicant.us/
I have a few Raspberry PI's laying around but never used one as an access point. (I'm assuming that's what your doing?)
I just sent a very nasty email to the developer "[email protected]" and referenced this thread.
Keep us updated if you get anywhere and I will be fighting this from my end and posting any updates as well.
Will do, I don't plan on not continuing with this one because my hardware and android do not operate as advertised.
The day I can rely on Linux for a phone OS is the day android gets ditched but will definatly check out your link also.
Pi-hole is basically a collection of hosts files that block ads and known bad domains on the DNS level, point the home router to it and bam the whole household gets an adblocker by default. Runs smooth but added a few commands to auto upgrade the lists with a Cron job.

I'll have to check that out.
I altered the hosts file on both my laptop and my other rooted phone to block ads and apps I used to have.
This is a small sample of IP's I blocked in the hosts file after running NETSTAT scans, there are a TON more that I added from MVP hosts (it is against MVP's EULA to post their blocked IP's)

Cheers
Guys, I found someone with a solution, just see this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73642381&postcount=4

That is not much of a solution unfortunately. The REAL solution is to install TWRP recovery on the adware/spyware infested Alcatel phone and flash to a different operating system. There is an (unofficial) ROM of Lineage 14 Nougat that is pretty decent that can be found on the XDA site.

It solved my problems
It's easy to solve the problem. Just go to applications. Select file manager uninstall upgrades, it will revert it back to factory version, no more spam !
I was getting really annoyed by the app that stealthily installed itself and called itself File Manager for my Alcatel POP 4. It constantly wanted to clean, boost, virus-protect, be a flashlight and camera app with it’s own toolbar and playing an ad whenever you asked any of those actions to be performed. The beauty of it was that it could not be disabled or uninstalled. I was desperately looking for a way to get rid of it without drastic measures, like a full factory reset or rooting my device. I found a suggestion on the net to install AppMgrIII from the Play Store. I did it as I was determined to try anything at that point. It offered me to replace the app with a “factory version”. I accepted that and sure enough, a normal-looking File Manager with no ads or toolbars appeared, all the rockets, boosts, virus-protection, cleaning brushes gone! I hope it won’t reinstall itself magically. In a perfect world I would prefer to have no file manager on my machine at all and a choice of installing one that I prefer but at least the nightmare of this intrusive monster seems to be over. I hope it stays that way.
Update: reverting back to factory version stopped the spam but it all came back with the next update. Now I reverted it back again and stopped automatic updates on Google Play for all apps. I will pick apps to be updated manually.

Best way to block ads in Android 10, does root drains Your battery?

Hi!
It's been a while since I was Anroid OG but I remember that in the past when I was using Xperia X I had an adblock which was blocking whole ads (I've got this phone to this day and it's still blocks most of ads even without changing anything since years). I didn't see a single ad at that time, but that was couple of years ago and many things changed. As I figured out from my research there are many different ways to block ads right now like VPN/host/DNS.
I would like to know what is the best way to block most ads without big impact on battery life right now (I've read somewhere that some methods have bigger or smaller battery drain but it's definitly there). I'm a user of OnePlus 7T (no root, but I can root it if it would help).
Also I see that when You have root You need to hide it from some apps because banking apps might not work for e.g.. Hence my question do root makes your battery life worse since You need to hide it, etc.?
Regards, Dan.
If a device's Android is rooted then in background runs the service named "daemonsu" what as any other running process drains the battery.
Honestly this is a first, and I saw a lot of questions about root.
No, root doesn't affect battery in any way. But in contrary it is used to save battery life.
Here are some ways you can block ads with:
No root:
You can get VPN, simple with bonus security although not efficient imo
Configure DNS, you'll need specific list to do that and a lot of time
Modify apps to remove ads, modifying apps can lead to breaking them and you have to uninstall the original app. But it works perfectly
With root:
Patch apps ODEX file to remove ads, since you can't uninstall system apps
Edit hosts file, simple, efficient and works generally
Block google services ads activity by modifying/patching it, works on google ads only
Installing adblock module with through magisk/xposed, this one works best imo and saves time and effort
As for what works best, I myself use hosts file, modified google services and most apps I use are patched. And I didn't see any ads since I got the device. And as you can see, root works better and more efficient.
Though modified google services might be an overkill.
@XDHx86 I see You are pro . So basiclly for noob like me rooting and installing adblock module through Magisk + Adaway adblock (rooted version which works via host files) would be more than enough?
Could You please provide some links to guides/reading about installing adblock module through Magisk or editing host file?
Also could You please share some tips how can noob like me increase battery life through having root?
Thanks for sharing Your knowledge @jwoegerbauer @XDHx86

For the magisk module you just open magisk manager and install the module from there.
For the hosts file:
Install ublock extension on Chrome/Mozilla.
Open the multipurpose section in ublock settings and preview "MPVS HOSTS" and "Dan Pollock’s hosts file"
Copy what you see in a file and save it.
Send the file to your android and save it in "/system/etc" and the name is "hosts" without extension.
Alternatively you can try using adb to push the hosts file:
Command: adb push /system/etc/hosts D:\Files\hosts.txt
Note: Replace D:\files\hosts.txt with your file location. On some devices this may work without root.
For battery life I just use greenify app with root. There are definitely better options out there but I don't really care.

To block hosts without root, the only way is using a proxy, or custom dns, even a vpn.
How to block ads on Android, with root and without root
Ads can be annoying in a lot of cases. If you're grown frustrated by ads on the Internet, here's how you can block ads on Android.
www.xda-developers.com
Redmi 9a is my dayly also, I opted for using ArrowOS it has 4 issues:
No wifi hotspot (nor VOLTE whatever that means it was in the known issues of the build)
Even with Gapps, using google drive back ups for whatsapp is not posible, IDK maybe im dumb, i had to use a local backup transfer.
Google maps location is buggy, it works kinda, but sometimes even on good wifi it tells you it doesnt know your location (I use google maps a lot, this is actually my biggest issue so far).
The touchscreen issue that came with stock rom when I bought it is still there, not really arrowOS fault but it wouldve been nice if it was fixed.
but the pros are endless, the phone is literally at least 10 times faster, and this is comparing a couple weeks into use arrowOS to a just hard reseted OFW.

I update my answer because i found a great way to get rid of ads without root :
I use since a couple of days an application that create a local proxy, an applicative firewall, a local dns.
It can force all applications to use it via a local vpn setup.

You can find it on f-droid repos to keep it updated.
You can configure a large set of ad blocker lists, privacy lists, children protection, etc
Adblock Plus seems to be a good alternative, but i didnt tried it, it use the same "vpn trick" : https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.adblockplus.android/
The best custom rom i found for this device is Nusantara Project and the best custom recovery is Orange Fox Recovery (OFRP)
