[Q] Wi-Fi calling Sprint S5 - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My S3 died last week and was replaced by the S5. I am in a Spark area and so far am impressed. My issue is that I have been using the Airave to make and receive calls @ home and the office - figures, the 2 places where I spend most of my time there is literally no service. The Airave sorted that. UNTIL, the S5... 4G/Spark isn't compatible with the S5. Unless, I manually switch my phone to 3G. It's not that big of a deal, but it is one more thing to do. The Airave tech support told me that I needed to get the WiFi Calling app. It wasn't on my stock build when I purchased the phone. I did receive an update within a few days, but that didnt have the feature. Sprint told me that an update was coming that offered this feature but didn't know when. I really don't want to wait for months.
Can anyone post/send me the wi-fi calling apk that will work with this thing?? I really dont want to root and rom this handset.
Thanks in advance!

S3 -> S5 also with poor signal at home. I have Sprints Airvana for a year now. S5 works just fine right out of the box, did nothing. Without the Airvana I have to be upstairs, stand on a chair and hold the phone up in the air to get any signal at all.
You could try and go into settings/network connections/more networks/mobile networks and change to auto in network mode

Yes, That's what I have to do now. But, I have to remember to do it. I'm not so bright sometimes. Then I have to remember to turn it off when I leave so that I can take advantage of the Spark service in my area. It would be so much easier to remove the Airave and simply activate the wi-fi calling feature.

DO NOT LEAVE IT IN "AUTO".
You will be UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE AIRAVE unless your are in "CDMA ONLY".
Go to
settings/network connections/more networks/mobile networks
and change to CDMA .
( Do NOT select CDMA/LTE until you LEAVE the Airave vicinity)
If you are indeed connected to the Airave, you will hear a recording telling you that you are if you call *99.
You will have to re-enable the CDMA/LTE everytime you leave the vicinity of the Airave to get LTE service.
Sprint Tier II Tech informed be of the above, and I have verified it all by personally testing the above.
Now, here is the real question:
What are the EXACT DIFFERENCES between using the "Wi-Fi Calling Feature" with NO Airave - AND- using the Airave WITHOUT using W-Fi Calling.????

Widget turned off 4g/3g, can't turn it back from 1x

So I was playing around trying to delete widgets and one of them took out my 4g/3g connection. The icon is stuck in 1x, and I can't find any setting to change it back.
dail *#*#4636#*#* . This will take you to the network settings. select phone information. And then scroll down to set preferred network type.
I did that, set it to both LTE mode as well as CDMA+LTE/Evdo, but then even when rebooting to toggle it, it shows Network Type as CDMA - 1xRTT
I'm seeing other threads with people having issues with being stuck in 1x, so maybe its just not me, and I disconnected and just happened to not get it back
I am having this issue as well. Rooted last night. In the process of removing system apps removed something I shouldnt have. Went to flash my back up created by Rom Man only to find out it wasnt made, fail, so i flashed the custom rom by Chingy. Since flashing the rom I only have 1X service no matter what I set the phone to on the toggle.
its not just you bro ive been having 3g and 4g problems all morning. I am in queens NY...if they dont get this fix before the 14 days I am returning this phone and going back to t-mobile
I had thus problem. Just turn airplane mode on for a minute, then turn it off and you should get 3g again.

I'm not even rooted, and I began experiencing this issue this morning after having my phone off and plugged in last night.
EDIT: I tested the above fix, and it didn't work for me. Every time the phone tries to turn 3g on it will appear in the status bar for a split second and then everything turns off, even 1x. weird.
It's a network problem on verizon's end. I'm in Cincinnati and data is not working at all.
I am getting this too - according to tech support, there is a problem with the 4G network right now - however why it doesn't fall back to 3G I don't know (unless there is a problem with that too).
I too am in New York, so it might be localized to NYC - They even tried resetting something on my VZ profile.
I'm still on the call as we speak, but I get the feeling given the number of people reporting this, it is a VZ problem.

It's definitely not just a localized problem. I'm all the way out in Utah (no 4g service here yet) and the 3g is completely jacked.
Yup confirmed with tech support, there's a nationwide outage with 4g data and they are working it with the highest priority, the tech said. Ah the costs of new technology. Always will have issues at start.
Same thing here, Pensacola, FL. Just went out on my drive to work today, now it's 1x across the board for me and the gf...she has an incredible and I have the tbolt...
Add me to the list. Been on the phone with tech support for 52 minutes and counting. I'm on hold right now and thought I would check xda. Stuck in 1x if I even have anything. I am about 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, PA. Phone is completely stock and worked perfect yesterday. Also, the tech said DO NOT dial *228 from the Thunderbolt. I didn't, but he said for future referece it will force the phone to use only 1x and 3g. Nice to know lol they didn't say that crap when I bought it. At least their tech support guys are super friendly.
Weird. Im in Akron Ohio and have full bars 4G. Just did speed test and getting 15Mbps down 20 up. Downloaded app off market just to be sure and downloaded without a hitch. This must not be affecting whole nation. (Yes my Wi-Fi is off lol)
Just got off the phone with VZ Tech support. He said there is not an acknowledge problem with the 3G network right now (unlike the 4G), but he's sure that soon there probably will be.
He could not use my phone as an example case (to raise the trouble ticket) because I was unwilling to perform the last step in the troubleshooting process (reflashing the phone) - but I'm sure there will be others willing to do that and this will become a known issue soon enough.
Worst part is, even my 1X support keeps going in and out - probably because the 1X network in NYC is overloaded, because all those users usually on 3G are all on 1X now, and killing it
Confirmed here, too...all 1x, must be a nationwide 3g issue
Same here south of Chicago. Guess I won't even bother calling about it. Thanks for the info.
This is definitely a widespread issue... I am in Miami and I can't even gey 3G here... I am only getting 1X.. The weird thing is, my friend has a Thunderbolt too and she seems to ne getting 3G fine.... If anyone receives any worse from Verizon, please post ASAP!!!
Yup im located in Manhattan New York having the same exact problem since 8:30am today No 4G or 3G i hope they get it fixed Soon Let's Go Verizon!

LTE not working?! Manual Programming codez (updated)11-7

I got my Nexus 5 yesterday and finally got it working. I live right next to a LTE tower and I can't seem to get LTE.
1. Checked PRL
2 Checked Sim
3 Checked Profile
4. Called sprint
5. Checked network settings.
When i put the phone in airplane mode, and back off. It jumps to LTE for 2 seconds then 3g
Anyone having these issues ???
*manual re-fresh*
*#*#72786#*#*
after that, phone will reboot and "re-fresh network"
Also, my phone wen't into global mode, which you will need to change that back to LTE mode.
- Still isn't fixed ...
will report back ..
Manual Programming Code
*#*#675#*#*
edit: MDN = phone number
MSID: split
UPDATE
doing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE only does indeed make LTE work both visually and functionally, with a loss of voice of course, but as soon as you go back to LTE/CDMA auto it'll require a reboot to take effect and LTE is once again not working.
(from sprint forums) - confirmed
I'm having these issues with Sprint as well. Thanks for your updates. I'll let you know if I learn anything.

You're Welcome,
Yes, this is very aggravating. My friends have LTE sprint phones and get LTE standing right next to me.
There is something wrong here! :/
On phone with sprint now, I hope they have an update.
Will report back.

Here is how I fixed it for myself on Sprint.
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Change Network Mode from Global to LTE.
It will still connect to Evdo, ehrpd and Lte and switches between them as needed.
Luckily I haven't got hit with 1x since trying this out. My area has maybe one or two spots where I'd get 1x instead of ehrpd.
Settings hold after a reboot. I was driving to work today with my phone playing my music and it seemlessly switched between 3g and lte on it's own.

We are not having the same issues then. In post #1. I've referenced checking the network settings. I've done this over and over.

I guess so because I was having that same initial problem you were where LTE would connect for a few seconds then when I tried to do anything with data it stalled out and went to 3g.

Mine does that too.
BUT, nothing in the settings has been able to fix this.
How long since you activated? Mine would not connect to lte at all until last night... about 30 hours after activation.
Now it connects fine. I tried everything including flashing the modems posted in dev, swapping sims, trying every different network config and nothing worked except lte only mode which then kills 3g and voice.

I too am having the exact same problem as the OP. I can change the setting from Global to LTE and the phone will connect to LTE for a few seconds before switching back to 3g.
I am coming from the Note 3 on Sprint that got great LTE here at home, about 16mb down and 4mb up but I am hoping this gets resolved quick.
I'm on T-Mobile and it favors sticking on HSPA+ instead of LTE. If LTE gets down to one bar, the phone decides it's time to switch back. Compare this behavior to my Nexus 4 and it would stick on LTE come hell or high water. I would stay on LTE while in the office and this phone refuses to even get on LTE in the office. I don't get it.
Some have suggested this is a "power saving" feature, but I call BS on this because my Nexus 4 wasn't even intended to have its LTE radio used and LTE really didn't impact my battery. It felt like it lasted the same as it did before I enabled LTE on it.
Possible Sprint Fix
Customer: Is the SIM device specific? I reused the one from my Note 3. I have seen other information that the SIM's for the Nexus 5 are device specific.
Mitchell C.: Yes, you can get a SIM for the Nexus from a nearest Sprint store. I can fix an appointment for you.
Customer: so they are device specific?
Mitchell C.: Yes, they are.
Mitchell C.: We've come across a lot of these issues today.
Customer: SO just to be clear, I need to ask for a SIM for the Nexus 5?
Mitchell C.: Absolutely.
Customer: ok
Customer: that should correct my connectivity problem?
Mitchell C.: Yes, every service will work fine after you get it.

Well, I got my sim card from a sprint store 2 days ago and I am still having issues. I have been emailing sprint care but no luck.
I hope they fix this soon! Maybe they gave me the wrong SIM? Idk
Doubtful Mitchell knows what he is talking about. People have used HTC One SIMS and GS4 sims and have LTE. But, today is the big day the Sprint phones go on sale. Will be interesting to see if any of those people have the issue.

Still stuck on 3G after activating around 72 hours ago.
To follow up on the Nexus 5's "special" SIM card. I'm also skeptical about this. I'm using a SIM from a GS4 (part #: SIMGLW206R) which is the same SIM mentioned in this post about activating the Nexus 5 on Sprint: http://qbking77.com/google-nexus-5/activate-nexus-5-sprint/.
However, I called a nearby Sprint store to ask if they had any SIM cards available. They said yes but when I mentioned the Nexus 5 the representative seemed to think there was some additional procedure for coupling the phone and the SIM. I don't know any more about this. Could be misinformation of course.

[Q] Can't receive calls while on LTE

I literally can't get any calls while connected to LTE. They all go to voicemail. I have been trying to figure this out for days. As soon as I turn off LTE I get calls on 3g with no problems. It also appears that when I'm on LTE if I make a call it had to drop to 3g before the call connects. Data works just fine. I have called sprint but they were less than helpful, updated prl and profile, and tried it in multiple different towns. Anyone have an idea of what to try next?

Whoops accidental thanks lol. If u check the other threads u will know that the way the new tri band phone's work, when on LTE all u get is data, on 3g u get voice and data, so while Ur connected to lte the only way to make or receive calls is for your phone to switch to 3g. This process should be automatic unless u manually changed something to force the phone one lte only.

That is so false because when I'm on LTE at my local mall, I can send and receive texts just fine.... the OP must've messed with some sort of setting is my guess..?
I have not messed with any settings. This has been happening from day 1. It took me about an hour after I got home from the Sprint store to notice that all calls were going directly to voicemail when I'm on 4G. As soon as I turn off 4G I get all my calls with no problem. I have tried updating prl and profile as I said before, but I don't appreciate people assuming I changed some setting when I'm telling you I didn't change anything. When I'm on 4G there is a spark icon that is constantly showing and the signal bar is always showing 1 bar. I don't know if that's part of the problem or not. If anyone has a serious suggestion to help instead of just assuming I caused this please let me know. Thanks.

If I read correctly on the s4gru website then the reason ur having this issue is because the tower is missing the 3g upgrade that handles this handoff which is called Circuit Switched Fallback*or enhanced Circuit Switched Fallback. Here's a link to the s4gru page with this info if u wish to learn more about it.

False again. When at the mall I can make/receive calls as well. You CANNOT use data and be on a call at the same time though (like I could on my S4).

So what your saying is that everything that we know about tri band phones is false? The tri band phones only have 1 antenna so it is impossible to use voice when connected to lte period. When u make a call Sprint kicks you off lte in order to use voice and when the call ends Sprint reconnects you to lte.
eCSFB Gap Issue – What you Need to know:
Smart devices require eCSFB to “fall back” to 3G to accept a voice call if the user is connected to the LTE network.

I never said you can't get a call while on 4G. I said I can't receive a call while my phone is on 4G. Something about my phone or area of service causes my phone not to switch to 3g for incoming calls so the phone never rings

i've been having the same problem! I live on the outskirts of the spark network so i only get the regular lte at home. and i dont believe the towers have been upgraded here yet because i wont recieve calls or texts unless i call out on my phone which forces lte off for 3g etc. but if i drive 15 min. north where the "spark" network is deployed then i'll recieve my calls and texts appropriately because the towers are upgraded there.
so sadly i keep my phone on wifi and cdma mode while at home then whenever i go out i have to switch it to lte/cdma and restart the phone so i can utilize lte while im in a "spark" area.
its tedious and sometimes i forget to switch back when i get home.. its such a pain. Leave it to sprint to deploy phones before their network is even ready for them.

Well the places without the 3g upgrades is not that big so they probably just decided to jump on to tri band even though development wasn't complete. It's like saying they should of waited not not sold any LTE devices until they finished deploying LTE, which means they would of still had old devices being sold.

well i understand that but at least when they first started selling the lte devices; the devices would still received calls and texts. because even though the lte may not have been upgraded/deployed or whatever yet. the cell phones themselves were compatible with the old network as is. but with these spark devices, they are deploying phones that may or may not work (the main point of a phone is being able to send/receive calls or texts etc) depending on where you are because half of the towers aren't upgraded for csfb
"Circuit Switched Fallback is a great solution to the issue of Sprint Triband LTE smartphones. But the problem here is that the Sprint network is being upgraded in Network Vision, and not all Sprint parts of the Sprint network can currently support CSFB. And it affects all Sprint Triband LTE phones, not just the Nexus 5 and LG G2." quote from http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog%2...-technology/
and the problem here is the phone is supposed to be able to detect that the lte towers in my area dont have csfb and therefore switch back to cdma. But it doesnt, so it stays connected to lte and i never receive any calls or texts. but when i drive north to a spark network area the csfb works appropriately. So this leads me to believe its a network issue and not that my phone is a lemon.
idk maybe im just blowing hot air here but its frustrating that the most important part of my phone does not work properly for whatever reason in my hometown where i spend most of my time.

and the problem here is the phone is supposed to be able to detect that the lte towers in my area dont have csfb and therefore switch back to cdma.

I know it's the reason I got rid of LG g2 but the only thing to do right now is put the phone in cdma only and keep checking if they upgrade towers yet

Because I thought he said that you can't receive calls or make calls if you are on 4G LTE. Which you can, but once you dial out, or accept the call, you have no data.
Simple miscommunication!!

According to S4GRU what you are saying is wrong. In order for your phone to ring it kicks you off LTE. Circuit Switched Fallback. When you are connected to LTE your phone receives 0 CDMA signals (this includes voice). When sprint is trying to send voice to your phone, if the CDMA cannot be routed to your phone, the LTE network is checked for your phone, if found the LTE network drops you so the CDMA signal can get to your phone.
Give it a try. Make sure you are connected to LTE and data is in use. Have someone call your phone. Watch your LTE indicator change to grayed out, and switch to CDMA before your phone starts ringing.

Finally someone researches this, even though I put the link to it you would be surprised how no-one will open it or not even bother to read it since its kinda on the long side.

No ISH, you still receive the call though, that's what I am trying to say..................
This whole thing is extremely depressing, just got this phone today and it's one of the first things I relized..sure I can put it on 3g and sit tight like that but come on the whole point in getting the newest flagship is how it's better than everything else, and sprint can't make it work right (yet). I noticed with my area that as long as the data is not actively loading a page or downloading it will switch to 3g and calls will come in but if it's load strait to voicemail..hope they get it all fixed the way it's supposed to be soon enough.

Unable to establish a wireless data connection

I have two Sprint Galaxy S8s that I purchased from Sam's Club. I have the same issue with both of them. Please respond if you are having this issue, or not and if you have found a fix. Apparently it is an issue on multiple Samsung devices with Sprint.
I continuously get a pop-up error that states:
Unable to establish a wireless data connection
LTE: ESM - 38 EMM - x
In the notification panel it shows:
RilNotifier
Mobile data connection error
I have spent hours on the phone with Sprint and they have not been able to permanently fix it. The last person talked to told me to take it to a store and they could fix it. Well, we all know how that goes....
There is 1 temporary fix. If I put in the Dialer code: ##72786# and let it do its thing, it will have no issues until the next time the phone is restarted.
I have update the PRL and profile numerous times. I have installed the latest system updates, factory reset. Nothing permanently fixes it thus far.

I was having/have this issue as well, but seems to only happen when I have been on Wifi Calling and loose Wifi connection.

It happens to me regardless of the Wi-Fi/Wi-Fi calling situation.

I have this issue and it only happens when I have location toggled on.
I've redone profile etc, but as soon as location is turned on it re-appears.
this happens to me occasionally as well. Not sure what is causing it. I normally toggle the "Mobile Data" on and off to get rid of it. It is at random times and not that often but it is annoying for sure
I noticed this today also. I toggled airplane mode but it keeps coming back...
I also have an S8 from Sam's with this same issue, as well as 2 G6's that i purchased from Sprint's web site that constantly drop data connection. Tried all kinds of settings changes, including changing bands, carrier aggregation, reset network, sim pull, etc and currently have a ticket open with the "network team". I have an S6 on the account also that has been upgraded to Android 7. It has no issues at all. Also, the issues seem to only happen in LTE only areas, I have been to an LTE-Plus area twice and the phone maintained a constant connection. That makes me think this is related to HPUE. BTW, the G6 will stay connected for 10 seconds on lte, then lose all data connection for 15 seconds, then repeat. I have watched and timed this behavior with a stop watch for close to 30 minutes, while moving and standing still.

Dial ##scrtn# I'm on my second s8 plus both have same issue
The only way I've found that keeps the error from happening for me is to turn off location. Since then I haven't seen the error pop up.

They thought it was a defected antenna which I figured it wasn't, I tried dialing ##omadm# and changing to sprint development mode which phone wouldn't activate only in production mode would it work, also seems to only be the phone I got thru mail without a set msl this one is 000000 my other galaxies have sprint set msl

I am not sure how to tell if an area has LTE Plus, but I live in SW Virginia and went 3 hours away for a couple days to Richmond and had no issues. So, it's definitely the network in certain areas.

I am also in SW VA, and after speaking to a few stores, one mentioned that it has something to do with the nTelos merger. I have to use 3G from Roanoke to Danville on a daily basis. even though it is fairly solid LTE coverage.
If you look at Sprint's coverage map, LTE Plus is a darker color. Richmond and Norfolk/Hampton Roads area are Plus.

I have assumed it was something to do with nTelos. I live in Roanoke and work in Christiansburg. The issue is in both places. Follow my instructions in my OP with the dialer code and your LTE will work fine, just have to do it anytime you restart your phone. No need to suffer on 3G.

I doubt it has anything to do with nTelos. I live in Michigan and I get the same issue with my s8 plus and whatever nTelos is, we don't have it.

nTelos was a regional carrier in VA, WV, NC, OH, MD. They were purchased by another local company, Shentel, that operates under Sprint. They are not an MVNO though, they sell Sprint branded phones and service. And all the stores changed to Sprint branding. It could be a different regional carrier from your area, This merger happened a over a year ago and that is when we started getting LTE service. I think the merged network is not capable of dealing with HPUE. That is the common denominator with the G6 and S8.
Galaxy S8 plus and S8 same error
So if I understand all these comments correctly, there is still no resolution to this? I live in Huntington Wv and yes we did have nTelos. I have 2 S8+ and 1 S8 all get this error. I have a ticket in for the network team but I'm not holding my breath.
I am also having this issue. I've done ##72786# that seemed to fix it, but it's back. I change to CDME/LTE from automatic, and it still happens. I was about to do a factory reset. It's my only complaint with this device, otherwise I love it. I am in southwest PA. It seems to happen during cell tower hand offs like if I'm out driving. I just toggled data and the error went away.
Edit: I'm on the S8 Plus but I don't think that makes a difference.

On my phone it starts doing it again after doing the dialer code only once I restart the phone. Is this your problem?

Poor S8+ data hangover...Bad 3G/4G signal/performance

I thought that S8+ has better antenna and modem than my iPhone 7+. But I made mistake. It is far worse than 7+. Even I have full bars on 3G it switches back to 2G and if on 4G it switches on 3G. WTF Samsung!?
I need to access service menu and set 3G/4G only but I have another thread about service menu which I cannot access....
Go to settings, connections, mobile networks, and tap network mode. Is 4G/3G/2G enabled? If not, enable it, and see if 4G connects

Which Variant do you have? I had a similar issue when I first bought the Verizon S8+ to use on Cricket/AT&T. I ended up having to return it and get the AT&T one. The first one I had would run on 4G or LTE with 4-5 bars and would constantly loose service, and every time I would try to make a call it would switch to 3G and tell me that international calling was not on my plan until 3 or more attempts later. Then it would finally make the call on 3G network. Since I've swapped I haven't had this problem. No I still don't get as good of signal as my iPhone 7 plus but it's comparable now.

International Sim-Unlocked 955F variant (EXYNOS). It is OK to switch from 4G to 3G if operator doesn't support VoLTE on its network. But that is not my problem. Full bar 3G, surfing web and it switches to 2G. NOT NORMAL. Same as on 4G to 3G. Full 4G bars.
If you have tried factory reset and all other trouble shooting, I'd just set up a RMA and get a new one. If you are in the US maybe the Snapdragon if you're willing to sacrifice root. Sounds really annoying to have a phone with LTE and be stuck using 2G. Just my 2 cents
Got the same issue...

Hi Friend, it so true...
I use S8 Plus and experience the same issue. If we only use S8, we will never realized this fail but if we use another device like Sony Experia or Mi5 (my experience), we will realized that S8 has worse signal receiver. I complained it to Samsung through Twitter, just say they will check on it and never get back to my last message.
Kind of mess for an expensive phone and high class brand.
Same with me

I'm having the same problem, with 3G makes a hang out signal, and I need to turn on the airplane mode and turn off to get signal and H+ or 4G, did you find a solution with this issue?
