Hello, two days ago I rooted my Nexus 5 and unlocked the bootloader. Yesterday I wanted to install custom rom, I decided on Slimkat, and when it was installed, I didn't have root permissions. I've never seen a ROM without root. I've tried all the usual ways of rooting, but I can't root it.
Do any of you know how?
download supersu http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
boot into your custom recovery, then flash supersu. reboot after.
you have to flash the superuser binaries whenever you flash with many n5 roms.
you'll also need to enable root access in the Developer options.

I still can't figure out why they didn't just include SuperSU in the ROM zip file. Having to flash another zip to have root seems silly.

Because it's compiled with superuser in the settings menu like many other aosp roms. You only have to activate root by turning it on in settings

Hi, it was just me being stupid xD I'm used to ROMs for my LG Optimus 4X HD where root was always enabled by default. Thanks for all your help, and I'll make sure to read on the ROMs website the next time I encounter a problem.

this morning i have received the OTA, i ran it and it successfully updated to 4.4.2 however i no longer have root access.
so do i have to redo everything again (backup everything and reboot again) or is there any quick way to fix this?

Of course you lost root. That's normal. Just re-root. How did you root before?

hell guys, why be snobs?
ive been around here for many years, had many, many devices, probably a hundred roms, and I use the toolkit because I find it easier...and have had no major problems.
so
After rooting with the toolkit, SuperSU was not showing up as an app. Installing it via play store worked for me too... - it asked if I wanted to update binaries, I chose normal instead of via twrp, and after doing that and a reboot, all is good...

If you accepted an OTA you will have to re-root manually or with the tool kit you originally used.
You can't simply install SuperSU from the Play Store and regain root. Sure the app will install (anyone can do this) but the binaries will be absent (i.e. no root).
You can test this by opening SuperSU. When you open it, it will tell you if it's working correctly.

If there is no way. Then anyway to install cwm and root from just the phone?
I do my updates etc when I have down time and that's usually on lunch or when my laptop is not around so handling everything from the phone would be very nice.

You will lose root when flashing an OTA, but it is just one extra step to flash the SuperSU (takes less than a minute) to regain root. I keep the SuperSU file on my phone and just flash it from there.
I use TWRP, and haven't lost my custom recovery while flashing 4.4.1 or 4.4.2 yet.
(I stay stock rooted - you can't safely take OTA if you aren't on the stock ROM)

I let it restart before I flashed root. And been using cwm just preference and its gone after the 4.4.1 flash and now the 4.4.2
Except root and recovery I am completely stock.

I haven't used CWM, so can't say. But with TWRP, I flashed the update, and let the phone start up fully. Then, when I saw that root was gone, I shut down and booted back into TWRP, and flashed SuperSU. and then, booted back up. TWRP is still there.
(I'm rooted, stock ROM with custom recovery as well)
I use TWRP also. I flash the OTA, then Flash the SuperSU and then I reboot. Have yet to lose root
So not really a way of keeping cwm or root... But this is how I did it without needing a computer with me.
Flashed updated in cwm... Then flashed root... Then reboot... Used ROM manager to reinstall cwm.... Everything is good to go.

Or do like I do wait a couple of hours for one of the great devs we have here to give us a fully working updated stock rom with su and busybox built in.
All you can ask for from a rooted stock rom.
Download the system images and use flashify to flash all the files you need.

When ever I am about to exit Cwm I get this error*Root Access Possibly Lost Fix Root?. There are two options yes and no. I tried both but still I get d same error.
P. S- my root is fine all root apps work perfectly

Do you use SuperSU rather than Superuser? I think CWM recovery only look for Superuser, so if you have SuperSU installed it will think you aren't rooted.
Official CWM doesn't recognize the SuperSU binary. This is one of the reasons I don't recommend it, but rather PhilZ Touch CWM or TWRP.

New cwm? Or Download superuser from the store and uninstall SuperSU? Can you guys please provide more details as this is driving me nuts to have to click on yes or no to fix root every time I go into Recovery. Or Should I use Twrp?

Obviously this topic is a little more difficult for me to figure out on my own and your response even though you're trying to help me does not help. I don't know what it means to just stop using super user when I'm using supersu? Am I supposed to uninstall supersu and then install superuser? Are these the same apps? And if I do flash another recovery like team win, do I have to uninstall ClockworkMod first? I have tried to look online for an answer to this and this thread is the only one with this problem which is mind boggling the amount of Nexus 5 users compared to the five people here who are experiencing this problem. So if you can direct me to another link that has more information, that would be great otherwise I'm not quite sure how to fix this when you guys said you did it so easily.

It only happens when you're using CWM + SuperSU, because CWM doesn't look for SuperSU, only for Superuser.
Just flash TWRP, CWM is horrible anyways. Or you could just ignore it and just press no every time. Makes no difference.
And you don't "uninstall" CWM then install TWRP. You flash it over (overwrite) CWM.

If your using super su, good. To change to twrp, which I recommend, just flash a twrp zip file in your current recovery. Google recovery zip collection xda.

I just flashed twrp and it installed fine. Thank you.
Another question, yesterday when I had CWM on my phone, I did a NAND backup which I just deleted from Root Exlporer after installing TWRP, but do I need to also delete the Clockwork folders from Root Explorer as well now?

Yeah, you can't share backups between them as they do them differently.
Whenever superSu asks for permission to run a root app my screen becomes unresponsive. Timer runs out and i am not able to apply grant permission. Help. This didnt use to happen when i was earlier rooted with towelroot. Right now also i ised towelroot

Pardon the ignorance. Just found out that flashing a zip file and installing apps from play store are 2 different things.
Well my bootloader is locked and neither do i have a custom recovery installed. So flashing doesnt seem to be an option right now.. If i am not missing anything.
Are you running 5.0? If so how the heck did you root with towelroot? AFAIK you can not root 5.0 that way. Maybe that is a problem.

Tried reinstalling it. This is what came up. I am on android 4.4.4 btw
You need to flash the supersu zip using fastboot:
teamandroid. com/2014/06/19/root-nexus-5-android-444-ktu84p-kitkat/2/ (you're going to have to fix that link because I have under 10 posts so the forum won't let me post..)
Additionally you need to have an unlocked bootloader

You say you were rooted ...why did you re-root? It looks like you are no longer rooted. Did you do an update or anything?

I was rooted. I unrooted because i thought it was required to update to lollipop. But i dont have any intention to update to L for now.

To get root again either flash the latest CF Auto Root in fastboot or flash the latest superSU.zip in recovery or flash a pre-rooted custom rom in a custom recovery.
Hi I was going to use chainfires method but the best the web page it only sates 5.0 with the build number LRX210- which is different to 5.0.1?
Is there any way to root then?

of course there is a way to root 5.0.1.
use fastboot to either flash a custom recovery (TWRP is probably your best bet), or use fastboot to just boot into the custom recovery without flashing. Either way, once your in recovery, flash SuperSU (download here http://download.chainfire.eu/641/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.40.zip)
done and done.

You sir are very wrong, you cannot flash that zip in recovery because it no longer works with lollipop... (Sigh)
PS. I have a custom recovery and unlocked boot loader so your suggestion are invalid

actually, it does work. with 5.0.1, I'm rooted. Except when I flashed 5.0.1, SuperSU v2.40 hadn't yet been released, so I rooted with SuperSU v2.37, and then updated via the playstore when 2.40 came out. but it definitely works with Lollipop.
p.s. you need to have an unlocked bootloader to install a custom recovery (which is what I suggested doing). So in fact, my suggestion is completely valid and 100% relevant. In fact, I had assumed that you already had an unlocked bootloader when I posted.

Your point is again invalid and 100% incorrect- I have just tried and it has not given Me root. I have to manually re-root not flash the zip. See attachment

yes, and the way to "manually re-root" is to flash the ZIP in a custom recovery. You the app installed, but not the SU binary. So flash it in TWRP.

CF Auto Root and flashing the superSU2.40.zip in recovery both root android 5(0.1/0.2). Did it myself and confirming root access.
You can root with the same chainfires files for 5.0, and then you can update supersu and twrp

Crazy. Done it to me a few times. I even decided not to help him ever again some time ago, then took pity on him yesterday or the day before and the he did it AGAIN!
He's just a school kid, but you'd hope he would learn from his attitude, but apparently not.
What's worse, is he isn't even picking up the knowledge that people give him or reading the stickies. He's been Here pretty much a year in the n5 forum and cannot even be bothered to.understand the basics. Asks the most basic questions every time.
